Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

It has to been setting.

After reading a crapload of various recent comments (Most of them positive for a change!) I'm still noticing one that keeps popping up.

"There was a lot of swearing."

I'm still struggling to believe I put too much swearing in most of my stories since I never get this comment at all over at IS. I can only guess that maybe it's a younger audience and perhaps more "moral" audience over here (It wouldn't be that difficult to be more moral though).

However if I look through comments on a story like Love SICK or Alpha Wolf which REALLY have a lot of swearing, I don't get that comment. It's mostly for Eternal or Necromancer, even Ground Zero doesn't get it too often.

Perhaps swearing in a fantasy setting makes it seem less "fantasyesque for some?

Anyway, I wasn't mad about it, just trying to figure out the pattern.

Next installment of Eternal: Twice as much swearing! Lol.

Shit, misspelled the original title.

It does seem like a weird thing to comment on, given the Maturity Level Setting of 7 of those stories.

*Hello??? What'd you expect? Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes?!?*

Personally, I thought the language went hand-in-hand with the subject material - some of which I found quite detestable (but very well written).

Swearing belongs in fantasy adventure, perhaps moreso since it's likely that the average person is less culturally rich back then. Fuck those ratty-ass commentors.

QFT. I honestly have no idea why people are complaining about swearing when it clearly has the highest rating (and warning). Not to mention the tag of war, which would quite likely have swearing of some kind.

When I read it, I didn't even notice the swearing. So it surprised me so many people ending up complaining. I'm also guessing it's because Endmaster's work are usually the ones that most people end up reading, so unfortunately more trolls pop up and try to find something to complain about.

Oh people can complain all they want about the language, I wasn't going to change up my writing style. I put a maturity rating of a 7 on them for a reason, but at this point I'm pretty sure nobody pays attention to those. (Or any other warnings I might put up for that matter)

Like I said I was just trying figure out the pattern for the complaint, and it's basically what I guessed and what everyone here sort of confirmed.

Getting odd comments is sort of regular past time for me anyway. This one didn't happen on this site, but years ago I once had one guy claim that the Ebay story I did was the absolute funniest thing ever and praised it whenever he could, but then he said he hated Trash and thought it was nothing but sex jokes. Even wrote a screaming comment at me about it.

Confused the hell out of me considering most of the humor that is found in Ebay consists of "sex jokes" and Trash (for what it is) has a bit more of a plot and storyline than the Ebay story.

I think that most of the "swearhaters" are trying to point out that modern swearing is alot different from a fantasy/medieval time. I don't think "oh my f*cking shitty god" was a common way of swearing back then. Or it might be because it is to attachted to our time.

Maybe you could make up some swear words for each race in your story, though i don't know what to do about the humans.

Yeah, I could do that, but ultimately I'm just too damn lazy to invent a whole new language (I'm not Tolkien, ha ha) for any fantasy setting I do, mainly because I like to just get on with telling the story.

Plus its sort of amusing to me to have characters in a fantasy setting to speak as if they came out of a Tarantino film instead of using the traditional ye ole medieval english since everyone always does that. If I ever did that, it would undoubtedly read something like "Forsooth! I have spied yon fucktards at yon gates!"

The only swear word I actively try to avoid for fantasy settings is "Goddamn" mainly because well, there's no monotheism in my fantasy settings and everyone tends to believe in multiple gods (Whether they actually worship them is another matter) so that swear wouldn't make much sense at all and "Godsdamnit" just sounds silly.

Wow, this really is an interesting topic. You really could get a list of intersting 'period' cursing going ha ha

I be there's something about it on the internet...

well, in Harry Potter there are some meda up swears like "Merlin's underpants" and such, though those are more funny than anything. If you could find a way to make yours seem more serious you could invent suff like that for a fantasy story.

Endmaster has made yet another quote for his internet profile...

Actually, for some reason, it doesn't seem anachronistic at all to me in EndMaster's stories, even though it does in, for example, Lord of the Rings or Inheritance Cycle fanfiction.

I haven't read the whole thread, so someone might have made this suggestion before.

The only things I can think of as to why they'd be mad at eternal and not love SICK are:
1.) The types of audience you would get from Eternal and the audience you would get from Love SICK are different. Both stories have reputations, so people know Love SICK is full of vulgarity and "questionable" actions, so people might not go there, however Eternal's reputation is simply that of the best story on the site (I thinkt it is anyway.) Also, Eternal is on the Stories for New Readers section I think, so that would add to the different audiences. To sum it up, the audience you would get for Eternal would generally be more "moral" or "innocent", so they would be offended easier, while the main group of people who would go through the reputation of Love SICK and read it are Ok with it.
Or
2.) The situations are different. For example, with a setting like LoveSICK you wouldn't be surprised at all with cursing, so you might not even notice it. However, in a fantasy story like Eternal, you might not expect it. However, you pretty much start that story off with a little boy getting stomped on and electrocuted (unless I got it confused with a different story) so it doesn't even give off a goody-goody vibe and that theory isn't as credible in my opinion.

Yep you got it right. Mistress shoots a lightning bolt at one kid and then stomps on your chest. She also tells everyone that they'll find love in murder and be instruments of terror and genocide!

She'll be a fun character to write more about when I finally get around to working on the True Eternal path.

(And yes to anyone wondering, I AM working on Eternal as I type this)

So can we eventually kill the Mistress in one of the other storyline's? Cause I've been wanting to do that for a while now. :D

I haven't written any comments on that, but I have noticed that sometimes in your stories the swearing seems out of place, or out of character.

Where? I've never had an issue with vulgarity in any of Endmaster's works.

I dont mine the cursing in the stories, it actually fits quite well most of the time.

Honestly, I've come to expect vulgarity from Endmaster. Seems to be a common theme linking stories. The grittiness from the swearing adds a sense of realism that you just don't expect to find online nowadays.

A song of ice and fire has a lot of swearing, but it's a fantasy and noone eems to mind it.

Then again, people who are offended by swearing probably have plenty of other things to be offended by in that series...

I wouldn't say that much swearing. And really? Another Eternal? OMGOMGGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG. (I just ate raw sugar.)
