I kind of feel like it's cheating, but I want the extra point for rating my own game 

Do you think your story is worth the rating of 8? Then rate it 8. Don't you feel it's worth the rating of 8, then my opinion is that you're not finished with it yet. When I write a story, I write it exactly like I want a story to be, the characters I create are, in my opinion, exactly how characters are supposed to be created, otherwise I would create them differently, wouldn't I?

Also, it would only be cheating if it was a some sort of contest. Unless there actually is a contest going on, the ratings of storygames on this site are not meant for people to compete. It is solely for people to know the quality of a storygame.

If you rate a good story poorly or a bad story greatly, then that would be more like "cheating" than giving your own story a higher rating.

I don't rate my own games because I feel that I have a biased opinion and that it should be left for the readers to decide how good it is.

Yeah, it's ok to rate your own games anyway you like :)

Though I would never rate my stories an 8, unless its a DIAMOND

Then the question is: if you don't consider your story to be a diamond, why do you publish it? Why don't you continue polishing it until you actually do consider it to be a diamond?

We like rubies instead, you know the stuff that grows in tall grass? They are easier to make or find.

... Wow, this discussion's gotten all serious. I kind of thought it'd be a laid back discussion with people saying they didn't rate their own games or guiltily admitting that they do... Guess we take things really seriously here, huh? 

To stick to the analogy, I could polish a rock I found in the ground for months on end, trying to get a diamond like the one EndMaster found, yet after all that polishing my rock would still be an emerald underneath.

In other words, some people aren't capable of writing 8-rated storygames and realise that. I do see your point - only publish your work when it's the best you can do - but for some people their best is only a 6.

Plus some people are just really, really modest ^_^

Where I come from it would be considered extremely arrogant to rate anything you've made yourself higher than "above average". Even when talking about stuff made by others "fine" is usually as high as we go.

So I tend to feel a bit weird about giving a story an 8, no matter how much I like it

^this is how i feel when i rate stories.

I rate on the curve. If I think a game is the best in a category or on the site, then I give it an 8.

For my part I love making games, I don't force myself to extend my original cocept just to make it better. My mind is less bound with the limit of perfection.

Your rating on your own game doesn't factor into it's displayed rating. In other words, you can rate your game whatever you want, it won't affect its rating.

I give my stories an 8 just because I know I wouldn't be able to give it a fair rating. That and I know it doesn't count anyway.

Yeah, I have noticed that your own rating counts about as much as an anonymous rating from the www.
