Welcome to CYS's First Annual Poetry Slam!

In this contest, we'll put your poetry skills to the limit and take you outside your comfort zones for some poetry fun!

So how does it work?

Similar to the Writing Exercises, the Poetry Slam is updated daily. Everyday, contestants will all receive a type of poem (say, limerick) and a subject (say, Nantucket). The way you use the boundaries of your poem type to describe your subject will determine the rating I give you out of 10!

Also similar to Writing Exercises, there will be BONUSES for each day, which range from relatively easy or really hard and will add to your score depending on their difficulty (if you complete them, of course!). You can also receive point bonuses for completing a good poem with a very hard poem type to work with in CYS (such as, say, Concrete).

At the end of the week, I will add up your point totals and announce the winner of the 1st Annual Poetry Slam! (Note: I will only give you a total if you compete at least 5 out of the 7 days.)

(This isn't supposed to be super competitive- it's a friendly thing for any aspiring poets or those who are just looking for something to do.)

Our "Week" goes from Thursday to Wednesday (to be different!), starting today. That being said, here's your first challenge:

~THURSDAY, WEEK 1~

Write three HAIKUS, each connected to one another (like they're all part of the same poem), about FROGS.

2-POINT BONUS: Use the word "misadventure" somewhere in the poem.

are tadpoles afraid

of what's happening to them

beneath the surface

inexorably

becoming something other

irretrievably

will you be frightened

when at last you understand

you were incomplete

A small, serene pool
Sung to by a croaking choir
Awakens once more

Beneath the surface,
Young froglets test their new legs
Ready to emerge

A new beginning
A new world not yet explored
After the first leap

Green amphibian,
Whose legs taste good when deep-fried,
Kinda like chicken

Green and red splatter,
comical misadventure,
when crossing a road

Stupid ectotherm,
Tiny pre-frontal cortex,
Really not that smart

Edit: Dang it, I didn't see that they were supposed to be connected. I'll fix this later.

:p

But royal's is way off on the syllabary. Unless that's not in your definition of haiku.  (to be clear, none of these are actual haiku.  We'd need a clear juxtaposition of ideas, and preferably a seasonal reference. Not just that 5-7-5 oversimplification.)

That's why I made his score 5/10. I accidentally typed a 7 at first :\ You're definitely right though.

That, and frogs aren't reptiles. I think he should lose another 2 points for his poor knowledge of animal taxonomy.

Kidding about the last part, of course.

In this reptilian
misadventure the frog eats lots
and soon gets obese

when this happened
Mister Toad became worried
about his good friend Frog

he called a hotline
he brought the fat correctional people
once more the frog was skinny

FRIDAY

Make a poem in diamante (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamante_poem) about fire and water.

3-point bonus: Don't use the letter "o" at all in the entire poem. To make it clear for scoring, write "going for bonus" above the poem to clarify if you're going for the bonus.

I can't believe that's a real poem form.  It looks like something a middle school English teacher would make up.

Are we supposed to use the single word form, or the form with phrases?

Poetry Slam

Whichever you like.

And I know it's a weird poem form- that was intentional :) I'll be bombarding you with the weirdest of the weird as far as forms go, to see if you guys can make a decent poem out of it!

-"earth"

-"fire"

(I guess I'm in a bit of an elemental groove. :) )

Elements are good for a lot of things
Understood by fools and kings
Earth, fire, wind, water
The basic tools of anything slaughter
Elements are good for a lot of things

There once was son of a daughter,

Who earth, fire, wind and water

Sought to control,

But blew a great hole

In the king's most-beloved otter.

YESTERDAY'S POINTS

SkyTenshi- 6/10

jamescoker- 7.5/10

SUNDAY - THE TVTROPES CHALLENGE (DAY 1)

Every Sunday will be the TvTropes Challenge, where I press the "random trope" button five times and you have to choose two of the tropes to use in any kind of poem you want. Crazy and weird, right? Yep! It's weird as hell. You'll also get a three point bonus if you manage to use all the tropes.

Today's tropes (please click on the link since not all the trope names directly describe themselves):

Do a Barrel Roll (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DoABarrelRoll)

Hates Baths (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HatesBaths)

Feather Fingers (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FeatherFingers)

Punished with Ugly (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PunishedWithUgly)

Carry a Big Stick (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CarryABigStick)

These aren't exactly poem material, I know- it's intentional. You'll be scored on how creatively and well you use these tropes in a poem.

Anyone?

Poetry Slam

Sorry, I'm just not feelin' it today. I'm exhausted from work and my creative side is pretty dead atm.

Poetry Slam

I'm not feeling it either. Feeling pretty drained from school. Just had an all-nighter to finish up an assignment. Don't think I'll be doing the rest of the poetry week. I'm one of those people who takes an entire fortnight or so to recover from an all-nighter. Sorry bout that carat :/

Poetry Slam

My finals are next week, and I'm finishing up the last of my classwork. I still count myself as part of the challenge, but I may not be able to post everyday.

Poetry Slam

Discouraged at my previous score :(

Poetry Slam

It was all right- I only took points off because it didn't follow the haiku rules (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables). Otherwise, it was a cool poem.

Poetry Slam

That's fine, guys. I'll extend this one to tomorrow or possibly the day after as well, if anyone's interested. If not, there's a lot of stuff going on- I understand. I might reboot this later if that's the case. smiley
