School of Mana (Progress Thread)

This is the progress thread for my entry for Kiel and Seth's School based contest. I will update this with progress I make with the story. It will be titled - School of Mana. As you may guess from the title, it is about your stay in a school which teaches the art of magic. However, instead of going with a simple linear approach with the story, I have decided to make it open ended. Means that you will have the freedom to freely explore the school and its surroundings and do things at your own pace. The game will be set in a fantasy world and will have a primary main quest apart from the side quests and misc things to do. I will continue with the next post...

(It's so hard typing on mobile) Expected Things about the Story
  • Character Creation:- I will use a simple skill selection method to work out the character creation. It will allow for a total of 336 different character combinations.
  • Explorable World:- The whole school plus some of the surroundings.
  • Things to do:- Apart from a major main story that will advance the story forward, the game will have many side quests. There will also be mini games like gambling and duels. You will alse be able to perform misc. activities such as brewing potions, reading books or talking to other students.
  • Continued in next post...

Honestly, I have no idea if I will be able to complete it at all, let alone by the given deadline. We'll see how it goes. I am aiming for somewhere around 200 pages. So let's begin! :-) Current Progress:- 0 (conceptual phase) /200 pages

I have brainstormed a bit and come up with a basic structure for the playable area and plot details. Also, I am considering limiting the character creation to only stats and variables.

Sigh... I have realised that I will never be able to cimolete this ever. It has sprawled to infinity. I will probably start another story on a smaller scale... *sad face* @Kiel_Farren Pls delete this thread :)

Try to make it more fast-paced and plot-focused. That should make it faster (and easier) to finish.

I agree with Raven. It's all very well making a storygame open ended with lots of bells and whistles plus lots to explore, but maybe not the best idea when you've got a contest deadline. It's probably for the best to focus on something short and simple but still works well as a story.

If I'm not mistaken, Kiel entered A Game of Life and Death into a contest, but with less pages than it currently has. He added a lot of the branches after the contest finished. What I'm saying is that you could do a simplified version of the storygame for the contest, then expand on it after judging has taken place.

I'm not the kind of person to give advice on deadlines, period, because I've made it abundantly clear that I take forever on my stories... but I do hope people will put in as much effort as time will allow because we are specifically looking for feature-worthy games for a category that needs them.

And... sorry, but you're mistaken. The full version of GOLAD is what was entered in the contest. I published the much smaller, initial version before I ever knew about Spring Thing.

Haha, yes, I got through the first two posts before I realized there was absolutely no way even a fraction of that was going to be happening before the deadline, unless maybe you're a robot or something.
