Well going by that standard, that’s almost everything I’ve written. I’d say there’s been more than a few comments praising a story like Eternal for the plot and writing but not liking it because it has so many death endings. Make the wrong choice and you usually die and to some that makes the story feel linear.
Which I can see that point of view, but I disagree with it.
Or rather I don’t see it being any more linear than when you get 500 minor choices, but they all ultimately lead to the same ending with maybe a few cosmetic changes. If anything it always feels like the choices matter less since the endings are so similar that it was like the choices didn’t matter all that much.
I generally like to make the paths to the final endings vastly different from each other so the choices that don't lead to death (or even a premature "good" ending) matter a lot more.
A death ending is pretty final, but at least you know that the choice mattered, you just chose WRONG.
