Player Comments on Adventures With Raven
Instantly liked the concept of the story. I love all kinds of mythology surrounding Gods, and while I’m familiar with a lot of Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology, Inuit mythology is something I know nothing about, so I was very excited to learn some. The fact that it involves a trickster God was definitely a bonus. Those are the best kind!
Definitely wasn't disappointed. This story certainly makes me want to learn more about Inuit mythology. The game was almost dream like in it's execution, a bit like Alice in Wonderland where nothing really makes sense, nor is it supposed to make any sense.
Pretty happy with the story in general but the main problem I noticed is quite a lot of links to earlier parts of the story that really shouldn’t be there. For instance, in the middle of the game you have an opportunity to ask certain birds where the Fog Man is. After you’ve asked them, you go in search of the Fog Man, and yet several times after this, you once again get the opportunity to ask the birds where the Fog Man is. Accidentally missing links out is an easy mistake to make, but how the author managed to accidentally include links that shouldn’t have been there, I have no clue.
That aside, I'd say it was a very enjoyable read. ^_^

This is a fun one. The writing makes for easy reading, not to mention that Native American Myth is incredibly rich, diverse, and underappreciated. I hadn't come across this one before today.
The difficulty in this genre is that to be true to the myth the author often has to sacrifice player freedom. As is true of most stories from this era of CYS, early MAG specifically, there is only one ending, and essentially only one way to get to it. We as readers are presented only with the illusion of choice, which would be more disappointing if this weren't a short enjoyable edutainment story, and a well edited one at that.
I can see where the author took most if not all dialogue directly from the myth. It might have been nice if it had been, "interpreted" rather than translated word for word.
It might have also been nice if we had gotten to see more of Raven's adventures, or even if the writer had flexed some creative muscles and come up with alternate endings.
I expect this character lacks recorded instances of complex interactions with other figures. He never appears to be in any danger, and nothing is at stake, except for maybe loosing his stick, which on my first playthrough went totally unused, as its only function, besides providing an excuse for end game links, was in the optional side story.
That's probably the most disappointing thing about the story. The richness of the myth and character is not fully realized by any stretch.

I liked it, it was certainly an original premise told in an original voice, though the difficulty of turning a myth into a story-game is apparent by the circles readers will often turn in, though I suppose they are necessary unless you feel like creating alternative myths to explain natural phenomena? I am sure it would be very enjoyable to see you write a similar treatment of figures like the Norse trickster god Loki (he who made The Mask for Jim Carey)or even the Greek Gods who certainly did various interesting things in their free time.

Since you were turning a real myth into a storygame, there were bound to be limitations. However, I think you did a decent job incorporating different paths for a mostly linear story. I feel like there should have been a bit more in-depth lore drops about the other parts of the myth outside of just Raven (like the Woman From the Whale).
For example, her story is brushed past very quickly and not told very well. The Raven wants to marry her in the actual story, is broken up about the death of the whale, and comes to the realization that all things have souls after her rips the woman from the whale and accidentally kills it. Now I know this isn't the exact story but if you're willing to play a bit more fast and loose, maybe consider branching a bit more and opening up to your own interpretations and/or continuing the tale in a unique way?
All in all, though, decent story and kept me entertained!

Ha. I spent part of my summer vacation hiking in Alaska, where there was a resting stop somewhere on a mountain where they sold videos about Raven, the Trickster God and other things related to the Inuits of Alaska..
It got pretty weird since the video showed a Native American in tribal costume consisting of a large black beak and feathers attached to the sleeves pretty much twerking while the narrator discussed Raven's story. So that was odd.
Anyway, it was a cool read, especially with context. Good information on Raven and a fitting story for it. Good job.

Lovely story. I'd love to know if your Raven is based off of any true legends, though, because it definitely reminded me of something very similar I read years ago, but can't remember now. In it there was also a Raven who one day took pity on Men and brought them fire.

I really liked how you wrote in the language of a folk tale. It felt like I was reading a Native American folk tale instead of playing a storygame online. I thought it was really well done.

Entertaining, but seems to lack a real plot. More just little scraps of stories, but fun. It is written in a style very reminiscent of folklore, which I certainly like, but it still seems quite disconnected.

I'm not too familiar with Native American mythology, but this was a fun, engaging story. Well written; some typos but no big deal. Very different from most of the games on this site. The story does a good job of allowing you to play the role of the trickster, a mischievous and fun-loving but sometimes arbitrarily cruel character, especially if he gets bored (sorry, Whale).
