Why are the variables so restrictive? Only 10 characters, only A-Z and 0-9, all CAPS, no spaces or special characters...

WHY?! What's the point of variables having to follow such strict rules, when either a creator wants there to be a space so he can quickly click on the variable when setting actions, or when a player wants to be able to understand what ITEMPIKDUP is supposed to mean.

Less-restrictive variables would allow creators easier categorization, readers to have "cleaner"-looking variables, and give everyone a break from these ridiculous rules.

While this does sound nice,  I suspect that the restrictions are for technical reasons.

They are. The way the engine is designed, it can only support that. HOWEVER, i do believe the max 10 char limit is somethng alex set, not a limitation of the editor itself.

Display to the reader? I use variable names as labels so I know what the variable is. When displaying information to the reader, don't use the 'display variable' but add a line of script so that you display your own text, followed by the value.

Ie, make a variable NMKLS, but on the page, have text saying "Number of Kills: " then display the value of the variable. Instead of using 'display variable' which would just say "NMKLS = 5" on the bottom of the page.

Yeah, but your method is really only efficient for variables that deal with small numbers. Variables with larger values can get cumbersome if you have to write out, say, 100 different pages that say "Left Arm Health: 100" to "Left Arm Health: 1" etc.

Um, couldn't you just say "Left Arm Health=%%LAH%%"  or, you know what I mean, the right way to scripty that.

is correct, where LAH is the variable name defined in the editor.

Well, I'm not an expert with script. In fact, I think I might request some help with scripting in the future. Obviously there'd be a reward. How does 200 caps sound?
