Say, for instance, a banner saying 'Online' flying across Gertman14 or whatever would alert you he was online easier than looking down at the 'Who's Online' thing. IIt would be simple and easy to implement, right?

I disagree, I'd like this feature. Especially when playing a forum game, it would be really cool to get a rough idea of how many of the players are online simply by scrolling through the active thread.
Especially if it's something like MVM where you have to scroll all the way down ?to the bottom.
Well if that's the issue, you can just use the scroll bar and drag it all the way down and highlight wherever you just were to keep your spot.

That sounds cool. Instead of having the word online on top of their avatar, I think the word "online" or "offline" under their name would look much better.

I'd also like to see some sort of activity bar / admin/moderator tag displayed as well.
