Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

Cuss cuss cuss cuss. I'm angry. I'm HANGRY. You probably heard about that immensely interesting game coming out whenever, Detroit: Become Human about those android folks shoved into super trying situations, and a bunch of mega loser pussy jerks are trying to censor it. Here's why.

  Cuss. Cuss this.

Watching this made want to barf (surprisingly, I've got some iron in my nerves). A deep, dark feeling of dread washed over me. Not just because it's disturbing and scary and ack, but because I went through stuff like that when I was that little girl's age. Cuss. I'm pretty much an adult now, but that stuff still follows me around. I'm curious, so I'm gonna play this game, torture myself a little. These issues are important to me.

So here's what the mega loser pussy jerks say: "Abusers will get offff to this" and "Domestic abuse is not a gaaaame". No, it's not. Just because this content is in a game doesn't mean it is a game. It's not like it's Hatred or anything. Games aren't just for kids. Games aren't games at all anymore this is more like interactive actually so they don't have to be for specifically anyone or do just one thing. Like any other piece of art, video games should be able to tackle rough topics without this kind of buzz.

I agree and it's not like the game is portraying the abuse in a positive light. The trailer seems to be about how the main character will respond to it and the abuser is clearly the "villain" of the scenario. This is probably coming from people that think video games are still Super Mario and Tetris, both still exist and both are still good games, but games have become more and more involved in dramatic storytelling but some people aren't aware of how video games have evolved.

There are always going to be people getting the vapors and their panties twisted up about what subjects should and shouldn't be explored in fiction. What the 'forbidden' subjects are changes, but the puritanical attitudes stay the same.

Games have had to fight this just as much as other mediums, it just may seem like they get targeted more because they've sprung up in our lifetimes and evolved so fast. (Although I'm pretty sure only games have had to put up with the added BS of certain people trying to deny them a status as art altogether...)

It used to be violence and sex having all the moms and politicians up in arms, now their kids embrace that stuff while trying to forbid anything that triggers the Tumblr generation, in just as blind and reactionary a manner.

And here, since you seem to be having trouble with your keyboard: Fuck those people. Fuck them sideways with a broadsword.

If the rest of the video game has the same tone towards domestic abuse and violence, then I'd be in full support of this video game. It seems to have a pretty accurate depiction, and I believe trying to hide real problems are acts of cowards.
The video game also seems to be well made and interesting which is not something I say about many.

Really feel bad for Austrailia since they have a nation wide version of censoring video games. Would rather kms than game there.

There's always a crowd that whines about stuff like that. Can be anything really. Drugs. Sex. Cigarettes. Violence. Rape. Guns. Blood. Male protagonist.

Developers and publishers are going to put out material that sells. Bottom line. Tipper Gore's crusade was a failure, and Dee Snyder was a boss testifying in front of Congress. The closest censorship got to a victory was when they censored Eminem back on the Mather's LP. And then when he brought it back up on Rap God, the whole line got put in near verbatim . . . take seven kids from Columbine, stand 'em all in a line, add an AK-47, a revolver, a nine . . .

The only difference today is people whine about some new crap mixed with the old, but for the most part, censorship only means anything to politicians and non-entertainment corporations that a small group of criers try to force into PC mode.

Ah, the idea that video games are this special thing that requires an extra level of censorship has always been about. I can point to endless soaps where abuse happens all the time, but no one gives a flying fuck. It's just a double standard that exists in old fuckers' minds.

Oh yeah I heard about this.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this controversy as usual causes more people buy the game now since this one is probably going to be similar to Heavy Rain, meaning it’s a lot of hype and good ideas but is going to be meh with actual follow through. Who knows though.

French video game developers seem to be the only ones that bother using Detroit as a setting in their games. I imagine that has something to do with it once being an old settlement filled with a bunch of fur trading Frenchies. They really love portraying that place into a technological wonderland filled with androids/cyborgs for some reason.

I actually quite liked Heavy Rain.

Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

I imagine part of the problem with Heavy Rain for me were the protagonists.

The FBI guy felt really out of place since at its core it’s a noir thriller that is more or less taking place in what looks to be a modern setting, but Norman feels like he should be in some cyberpunk setting instead with his Deus Ex futuristic glasses and also he’s just bland in general. The glasses and his drug addiction are the only interesting things about him and he’s only on the drugs because of the stupid cyber glasses.

The female reporter was okay, no real complaints about her. Though Madison was obviously fan service most of the time.

Ethan was just annoying. I get that he was a broken man and emotional about his sons, but something about him was just unlikable.

About the only one I liked was the one who turned out to be the killer. Which when the reveal was made, it all made perfect sense that I ended up liking Scott’s character the most.

I watched my wife play the game since she was the one that was interested in it, but by the time it got to the end, she was glad he shot himself in the head and saying "Just go ahead and do it already." Lol.

(Scott got away with it since the other characters died in that play through as well)

I liked Until Dawn better as an example of these type of games. Granted I didn’t really care about any of the characters in that game, but I suppose the horror theme helped with that. Plus the total party kill I got on my playthrough felt like a win.

Oh yeah I love Quantic Dream games.

I also liked that storyline and game mechanics.

To hell with those mega loser pussy jerks. If you don't like the content, don't play the game. Never really understood censorship.

Who gives a fuck? Who gives a single, flying fuck? What the fuck does "Abusers will get off to this"? People that like that shit don't get off on being portrayed, they get off on experiencing things. An abuser doesn't want to look at other fat, broken, stubbly assholes beating their children, an abuser is the guy who beats people over the head with a sledgehammer in a game and then laughs at the ragdolls even though they don't fall in any particularly unique way, and then spends a few minutes laughing to himself crouching over the body. An abuser doesn't play things that call them out, and if they do, they don't associate with it, they're blind to it.

Even then, do people think they're playing with abuse? Games have been full of family abuse and mistreatment since Crusader Kings. Is your son gay or impotent? What a serious problem! Nothing that can't be solved by arranging a marriage and fucking his wife-to-be. Fable? Oh yeah let me just be an incredibly violent and threatening person who's never home, obligates you into providing me with services and buffs, and when I'm bored or upset and our "relationship" hits the rocks, actually murdering wifey will inconvenience me less than getting a divorce. Skyrim's much the same, except you can also force your family and friends to hurl themselves at dinosaurs until they die, shout them off cliffs if they say one line too often... It goes on. Nobody really gave a shit when that was a thing, it was just the butt of video game logic jokes and memes, when in real life, that'd sure be considered an awful fucking thing to do, wouldn't it?

Now one game wants to shine a light and relate to some of these very difficult problems, and bring the disturbing troubles felt by a few to those who weren't ever given the experience to empathize. But all these oversensitive fucks can do is squeak fearfully and try to neuter it because UGH VISHNU FORBID ANYTHING HAPPENS THAT DOESN'T FIT INTO MY COMFY FUNBOX. (And that's a metaphorical statement, not a vagina.)

In Fallout 2, you could make your wife/husband blow dudes in the porn studio for 3 coins, kill them, then go tell their father their son/daughter is dead and give him a heart attack.

The only thing I have to say about video game ratings is that everything should be labeled according to what is in it and then sellers have to responsibly NOT let them into the hands of children.  But that's the same as it is for movies and other materials.  As long as people know what they're getting into, video games are a good way to explore difficult topics without having to actually endanger yourself.  Some of them can even help you understand others.  Some of them are just macabre.  And if people don't like a style of video game; they don't have to play it.  So long as children are being protected, adults can make their own decisions.

Why not just have parents vet what their kids buy? No idea at what point we decided that the state needs to get involved, but it's dumb. Kids aren't going to explode if they see something inappropriate, and parents should make sure they don't.

Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

Because some parents are dumb?  I mean, we don't sell cigarettes or alcohol to children.  I don't see why we should sell high rated games to children.  Also, I am speaking as a parent.  And while children aren't going to explode, they can suffer psychological damage if they see the wrong things too early.  There's just a lot of parents out there that don't know enough about video games to realize how serious some of them are, so they don't bother looking at the boxes before getting games for their kids.

Parents need to know their children well enough to determine what they can handle.  But even a cautious parent can't be with their kid all the time.  I figure it's a secondary safety measure to have it from both the parents and the seller's vantage.

Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

If it matters that much, look through your kid's bag when he gets home. Or keep the TV in a common area where he can't play some bad shit without you seeing. Why does the government need to swoop in and stop the big, bad retailers with their dangerous mean words at all? Surely there are better uses of tax dollars than doing parents' job for them.

Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

Actually, keeping children safe is probably better than some of the other things governments use their money for.  Children are the future after all.  And, as I said, once children get to a certain age, you can't really control what they see/hear.

Have you ever heard the phrase, "It takes a village to raise a child?"  In a small way, we're all responsible for how we act around children.

Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

First, I'm now sure if this is a game that will have huge amounts of appealed with younger kids anyway. Secondly, most major retailers don't sell mature games or rated R movies to children (and the kids need money from somewhere) or otherwise the games are bought online and require a credit card.

So I'm not sure there's much need for an argument here and at any rate it becomes a bit of a moot point when kids are handed phones and tablets and thus allowed instant and unfettered access to hardcore porn and the most extreme fetish material, not to mention videos of real-life people being shot, beheaded, set on fire...
if parents are going to be lazy, indifferent or inattentive,...or overly protective to the point their kids never learn how to think or talk about challenging things or handle reality...a video game dealing with mature scenarios doesn't even register on the list of harmful influences a kid may come in contact with with no preparation whatsoever.

Five points to make, the first two I believe have already been covered:

1. Pretty clear sign that the people complaining still have the stigma of video games being an inferior medium of storytelling.

2. There are games that have the potential for far worse things - where you potentially play the abuser, no less. Those that are complaining may have complained about those, or about games in general being capable of that. In that case, good on them - they are at least persistent in their morals. If not, then... Well.. It shows a lack of truly caring on their part, and simply wanting to seem "in the right" to those around them, without actually having to put in the effort.

3. David Cage and the rest of Quantic Dream knew this would happen. Well, perhaps David Cage didn't see it, since he's a bit... off-his-rocker, to say the least. But no doubt there were some people at Quantic Dream saw who this scene of abuse being in the trailer to be shown to millions of people, and said "yes. This will get people talking." And talk people did. And sales are more likely to go up rather than down as a result of this, although it is fairly far away from the actual release date.

4: You have to admit it is a bit insensitive to put this situation in the light of "check out our intricate map of decisions! Wowzas!" Not enough to pull the game from shelves or anything ridiculous like that, but... In a trailer? A bit distasteful, although they probably already knew it would stir controversy. That's likely why they did it.

5. Calling them "mega loser pussy jerks" wouldn't really help to convince them, if they were reading what you have to say. Just be careful about that moving forward, if you have any intent of changing people's minds. We already more-or-less agree with you on this forum, but preaching to the choir doesn't really change things. Then again, you're probably just intending to vent, which is understandable.

Nah, I was just in the fiery moment! If I was gonna talk to anyone opposing about it, I probably wouldn't break out with things like "mega loser pussy jerks". I think I can present a decent, mega-loserless argument when the time calls for it.

Looking at #2, I suddenly thought about Bully. I usually despise games of that sort but I really enjoyed Bully because I got to kiss every boy in school, and Gary was pretty cool, if you didn't think about how he was constantly screwing you over.

Video Game Censoring: "Abusers Will Get Off To It"

2. I guarantee you none of those people were complaining about all the gang rape, child enticement, rapey necrophilic serial-killer necromancy, child abuse, and onward in Skyrim. And maybe half of them even cared about Bully or GTA.

4. See, that can be interpreted differently, though. You could also say that it was intended to be "Well, look at all these different endings you could have. Maybe there's more ways to deal with an abusive father than shooting him like in the trailer"... And honestly I wouldn't put it past the devs to add intend for a meaning like that in such a goofy way.

The Fable games had a lot of this stuff too, a lot of it done by the player and it wasn't treated seriously at all. I absolutely did have my character kill several of his wives for giggles and I imagine that was upsetting for their children.

The first Fable with the extra content wasn’t a bad game.

I always thought it was an odd concept to have a school that actively trained “heroes” that could pretty much do the exact opposite of heroic stuff. The place was basically cranking out the same sort of people that would fuck up the world as well as save it.

Obviously the hero school had some sort of racket going on.
