Questions from a Newbie

12 years ago

Hello all! This is the first internet site I have joined in quite a while! It seems like a pretty good community to be a part of! I do have a question about creating a work. I've played through a couple of stories as a guest, and I noticed that at the end there was a point value. I particularly mean Dead Men Walking. Now, do I have to personally assign each page/choice a point value, or is there a system on the story editing page that can help me do this? Thanks in advance for an answer! I do indeed feel welcomed!

Well Welcome!

There's no automatic way to make links worth points. Each link has the ability to add points to the player, but you have to set it all yourself (each link would only take a matter of seconds to set).

Hi and welcome!

If you have Scripting Enabled, you can set the Global Page Script to add Points every time you go to a new page. It's not as specific as assigning points for each link, but it will give you a Score based on how many pages you played through during the game. It's a little rough though, because it will also give points for going back to a previous page, so it could potentially be abused by a player to rack up more points than they actually earned through play...

How exactly do I set these links to have values? Thanks!

You have to upgrade to the advanced editor first (it's nicer to deal with anyway). Then, beside each link there will be a plus and minus sign stacked on each other in the form of a button. Pressing that will bring up a menu that allows you to add points.

Awesome dude! Thanks! I was trying to avoid the advanced editor, since I saw that warning about not using it on your first story. Will it change what I already have drastically, or can I use the options available at will?

You can use them at will, nothing is forced on you. The way pages and links are displayed to you is the only thing you can't change, but it's better than the basic editor, so it's a good change.

In fact I think we need to remove the warning altogether, since it probably scares most people away from it for no good reason.

Your story itself won't be changed at all either.

Nah, you're good brother, that's my name. I have beard, so, I can certainly appreciate a fellow facial hair man.

Alrighty, I ran into a bit of trouble. I have separate chapters set up, and I want to link a page to a new page in one of the new chapters. How on Earth do I do this? Everytime a make a new page in one of these new chapters to link to, it doesn't show up in the  list of pages I can choose to link to. Also, I have tried making a new link on the actual page and I cant link that to the new chapter. Is there a guide on working with chapters specifically?

You can't without scripting. You shouldn't be splitting things into chapters unless they're separate branches in the storyline that don't connect. If you want to connect something in one chapter to another, then it shouldn't be in another chapter to begin with. Unless there's multiple ways into the chapter and this is one of them.

In which case you'd use scripting

Yet another reason to use the advanced editor with all the scripting enabled. When you do, the pages will show a page number with the title. You just tell a link from a page in one chapter to go to a a page in another chapter by giving it the number of the page in question. It looks like this, in the Link Script :=

$DEST := @P200

The above script code, tells the link to go to Page 200, regardless of what the link itself says. It could be a Previous Page Link or a Link to the page the link is on even. But instead of going there, you will be forcing it to jump to page 200 - even if in another chapter.

What would be even more useful however, would be the following code:

$SHAVE := %AMANS_MUSTACHE

Unfortunately, that code (much like Aman's Mustache), is still way too full of bugs to be of much use   ;)

My mustache is godly, and has only advantages. The bugs are for cleaning purposes only! (Like Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo's creatures in his nose.)

If you see a commented indented underneath another, that's site's way of telling you it's a response :). For messages that are posted in reply but are shown far down (like this one), you can put your cursor on the middle of the avatar - or the box where the avatar would be- scroll up untill you reach the edge of an avatar, and that's the one that it was replying to. Eventually you'll get a trained eye for it, but that helps untill then :)
