Links vs Page Names

This is either because I'm just really lame (and can't figure it out) or because I'm really lame (and I'm trying to do something that you can't actually do). Either way...

Is there a way to make it so that whatever name/number you assign to your links, the pages they link to can have different titles? That's a horrible sentence. I mean, I'd like to have a numerical system for my links so I can better keep track of them, but I obviously don't want my pages to be titled "1.1, 1.2, 2.1, etc."

Can somebody help me out with that?

Sort of confused by the question, but... The Page Title and the Link Title cannot be different. As opposed to the text you actually write in for the link itself.

What you can do however, is create your game, using whatever page title system you like, then go back before publishing it and change all the titles to something less numeric...

For example: in process a page might be: 2.5 Call to Arms. But before publish you just delete the 2.5...

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks! :) May whatever powers that be bless you for dealing with me.

The link and the page title can be different, but either way the player can see them. There's no way to mark either without the player seeing that I'm aware of.

Of course, you could be clever and make the links titled "1.1, 1.2, etc", and then use page scripting to change what they're called when a player actually plays the story.

That's actually an excellent point that I'm ashamed to say didn't even occur to me.

And unfortunately, I don't have that kind of cleverness up my sleeves right now, but for "simplicity's" sake, I'll probably end up doing the "change before publishing" bit mentioned above. But thanks for offering the help! :) I appreciate that.

Wouldn't be overly difficult. Just:

Enable Scripting.

Use the page script on each page to change the names of the links for that page.

$LINKTEXT1 = "This is the first link"

$LINKTEXT2 = "This is the second link"

$LINKTEXT3 = "This is the third link"

Etc,Etc. Not difficult, just will take a bit of time to go through and do.

Oh.

Thanks! :)

Just curious what this is supposed to accomplish ???

Isn't that scripting, just creating the text for the Link itself (which you can just type right in)?

The page Titles will still be the same, right?

Just a little confused...

When she is using the editor, she will see the names of the links she wants to see (like 1.3, 1.4, etc), to help her keep organized.

Obviously, this means nothing to the player. Her using the scripting means that, while playing, the player will see something different than she does while editing, because the scripts will override the names she gave the links.

So while editing the links will have one name, and while playing the links will have a different one, which is (if I'm not mistaken) what she was asking for.

Ah, I get it now. You could label the links in the game something like "This Link goes to p. 102" But they would be different in the game itself, like "head North".

Exactly.

Of course that still doesn't allow you to change the actual Page Titles though, which seems to make it a whole lot of work for little gain...

Yeah, there's no way to change the page title via scripting it seems(probably means the system relies on it being pre-set or something).

Her call if she uses it or not. Downside to changing the page titles when she publishes though is if she ever goes back to edit it she'll probably be completely lost.

Ok you guys have just been so immensely helpful :) Thank you. This is actually working out much better than I'd thought so, really, thanks so much!
