Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

A few things for anyone to discuss/vote on:

1) As you may have noticed, Madglee unpublished "Mommy."  He says it's "removed for good, been in the top stories too long."

Recommendations for a new featured story in the Modern category?  I'd prefer something that's never been featured before, rather than re-installing a previous candidate. Also, I'm willing to keep the spot open if nothing meets our exacting standards. XD

2) Suggestions to add more story tags?

Awww....But I was really looking forward to reading Mommy. I was just about to start playing it when I realized it was unpublished. Can it be republished but not featured? I mean, I don't see any reason for it not to be published; it's a great game from what Ive heard.

No! He should've just un-featured it or something!...
I guess I'd vote for Tyler Danaan's story to replace it, though.

The 3 that I suppose are potential candidates for the Modern Adventure space are Back to the 90s, The Insanity Complex and Answer the Call.

I'm sort of neutral on all of them though.

1) Mommy should be published back. It was a good story, and even if it is not featured it should still be published. Bring it back Madglee! But if I had some suggestions for the Modern Featured (not in any order)

  • Repression- An EndMaster classic, though I'm about tired of seeing this guy get feautured so much.
  • The Insanity Complex- It was pretty interesting.
  • Answer The Call- It was all right.

2) Story Tags:

  • Paranormal
  • Abnormal
  • Gore
  • Zombie *could fall under Paranormal*
  • Inspired By A True Story

Isn't Zombie already a tag?  True Story definitely is.  Unless you're saying those two should go?

No, I didn't notice them when I checked last.

Where are you checking?   I'm on the Storygame Properties page of an unpublished story, and I'm literally looking right at them in my dropdown list of tags: Based off a True Story, and then Zombie all the way at the bottom.

I'm not sure if anyone feels strongly about the story, but I'll cast a vote for The Insanity Complex if others are in favor of it.

I liked it better than Answer the Call and I discovered a broken ongoing loop for that 90s story.

Madglee should've keep his Mommy game even though it's not featured. It was one of my favorite!

I'll make a counter-terrorism storygame later. Seriously, more than 10 years since this site was born and no storygames with amazing details on firearms and stuff like that?

I have to agree with everyone who said that Mommy needs to be put back up. I don't mind the idea of replacing it / unfeaturing it, it was generous of Madglee to step down for the sake of a new game, but Mommy is still a very good game and we -need- those good old games as a means of inspiring new writers. xD I'll say it again: I joined this site because of Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight? If anyone here likes my work, well, there ya go.

I'm happy to look through the other entries to the category, but with the flood of poorly made games that's been parading through the site, I think good examples are even more important now than they were when I first came here.

I'll consider the tags thing and I'll look for a featuring candidate.

Edit: Giving myself a brief refresher, I'd personally like to see that slot stay open. All the 7/8s in the category (a whopping two of them...) are featured. There are only seven 6/8s in the entire category. There are 171 games.

Contrast this to Fantasy which has 28 less games over all and you get seven 7/8s and seventeen 6/8s. What I'm trying to say is that maybe this open slot will inspire people to try harder with this particular category. I do like some of the 6/8s from modern and I think they're good games, but I'm a bit reluctant to call them feature worthy.

Also, has dystopia been suggested as a tag yet?

I think that's been a tag. I remember finding it a little more than a week or so after the March refreshal of that dystopia contest.

Yeah, Mommy needs to be put back up.  Not only is it a good game, but it's a major draw to the website.

Ok I'm curious as to what makes a story-game feature-worthy?

If it is because a lot of people like it then WC stories that a lot of fans like (and lot of other people consider the literature equivalent of manure) would be featured. Is it because they get rated 7/8? All nine of the Homo Perfectus series got 7/8's but only one is featured. The only story on the site to get an 8/8 perfect rating isn't even featured which seems strange. Is a game featured because admins and mods like it? I've had two stories featured which is nice but I think they're good, not great, stories (perhaps the genres they are in are relatively light in terms of decent competition, which always gets me wondering if I should try to write a halfway decent school-themed story to get another featured).

Personally I think featuring stories with a 7/8 rating or above might be a good way to handle things but that would unfortunately mean some genres have no stories and some would have about ten. Maybe a yearly vote by each member on which (if any) stories should be featured in each genre with a story getting featured if it gets enough votes might be a cool idea? I'd love to see Mommy come back on the site, even if it's not featured. It was one of the most popular stories on the site. I'm not familiar with all the modern story-games but I haven't found one I think is good enough to replace it yet. Did madglee say he was writing a sequel to Mommy?

Answering questions in no particular order:

Feature-worthy is purely and solely determined by the people with the ability to feature storygames.  ^_^  Always has been.  Featured isn't necessarily a declaration of "the best/most popular stories," it's the stories that the admins want to put on display.   That's why Top Rated is a category:  "Readers say these stories are the best."

One of the reasons HP8 maintains its 8/8 is that it's hard to finish. 12,000 people played it- 250 finished/left ratings.  99.5% of those are 8s.  I think there's one 1. Comparatively, Necromancer has 6000 ratings, 4000 of which are 8s, but 400 of which are 1s.

I've heard madglee did in fact write a sequel. Once in a forum he expressed surprise that no one had yet found it.  His profile is important.  There's a reason he keeps the same point total.

I've also asked madglee if he'd consider republishing mommy.  He's been inactive since he took it down, and I wasn't comfortable cracking his account to see if it was still there.

At the time Sindri was writing HP, the admins of the day decreed that going forward only one game out of a series would be featured. (There was also a Star Wars series in fanfic that was featured.)  The idea being that one series shouldn't dominate the feature category.  (recursively, that's also why it's HP7 instead of HP8- admin thought that one was too hard, would discourage new visitors.)

I featured your stories because yes, those categories were very light, and also because especially edutainment hadn't had anything feature-worthy in a long time.  It's kind of sad that hardly anything quality is being made lately.

School is waiting for Kiel to finish his Magic Academy game ;)

Ahh ... =| is that, uh... particular rule still in effect, that only one game out of a series can be featured? <_<; Even if it's vastly different from it predecessor to the point that it's basically an entirely new game and fits into a new category? xD

I did find his profile suspect, along with the consistent points maintenance, but ... I have to admit, I have no idea what it means. *sigh* I love puzzles, but I'm afraid my mind is far better geared towards making them than solving them.

Appreciate the shout-out. =D ... But I sadly suspect it'll be waiting quite a while. As excited as I am about the project, my sense of focus is pretty much shot due to RL problems and The Other World has demanded my attention more than any other project anyway. Still, I'll try to make it worth the wait.

Ah thanks for clearing that up, I was wondering :) Overall I think the featured games are a good selection of the best the site has to offer but I might specifically target the weaker genreswith my stories  after my current batch of projects are published to see if I can get another featured :P Hopefully Mommy will come back and that explains the HP series but I often think that perhaps Sindri doesn't get the recognition he deserves as he dominates nearly a quarter of the top rated story-game list, more than any other author including EndMaster. I'm trying to branch out of my favorite Edutainment catagory into other genres, I'm publishing a Puzzle/Mystery in the next few days and am still working on Fantasy and Modern stories. The Fantasy story I think is pretty good but it's pretty vast (I'm adapting it from a 196-page novel I wrote years ago) and won't be ready for months yet.

Okay, who thinks Achilles might be worthy of replacing Mechanised Assault Unit?  tsmpaul has 3 of the feature slots in sci-fi, surely he can afford to give one away? XD

Achilles is more of a game while Mechanised Assault Unit is more story oriented.  I agree that it is feature worthy, but I still prefer MAU.

Vote For Stuff!

No, not really.  JJJ's Paraplaniac is the only one with a "game" feel in the list, and I wouldn't want it to be downgraded at all.  So I guess it wouldn't hurt for MAU to be moved down a slot.  Anyone who enjoys any of the other of tsmpaul's works will surely search for more from the author.

Actually after re-reading TSMPaul's stories, I'd take down Ulysses since it's technically a demo for a larger body of work.

Ulysses, Achilles, why the hell are we giving all these stories Greek names? Can't we name one Valkyrie or something?

(Yes, I'm fully aware Ulysses is actually the Latin version of the name)

Vote For Stuff!

I thought Ulysses was just an alternate (but still Greek in origin) name for Odysseus.

Vote For Stuff!

This is the part where I confess that even though I love sci-fi, Ground Zero's the only featured one I've actually read here. I do think Achilles deserves a spot (even though I kind of wish the author would go and give it a little extra polish first because I'm obsessive about minor issues like that) but I couldn't suggest which story ought to be kicked to give it one.

Though I see the three games by tsmpaul have been there for seven years, so yes, maybe it is time to kind of gently scoot one out of the way and let some new blood in.

1) Tell him to republish it. Even if he wants to have it unfeatured, there's no reason to flat out remove such a great storygame.

1b) No recommendations. Nothing else is good enough to be featured right now tbh. Maybe Answer the Call if you really must have another one featured.

2) No new ideas for tags

Mighty cool of you madglee!

I mentioned way back, that we should have some sort of rotating Featured Story system, where stories that get Featured stay Featured for a length of time (maybe a year?) then drop back to unfeatured where they can possibly pick 'Featured' Back up again next round.

Maybe have a silver star for 'Previously Featured' and gold for the current 'Featured'.

It would be one way to sort of mix things up a bit every now and then, while still acknowledging the best stories of the site.

(And I still think we should have a Dumpster Category for all the poo games haha!) ^v^

Vote For Stuff!

I don't think we get good games often enough to support that tbh. Not to mention if a game really is worthy of being featured, it should be put up ASAP and not have to wait until the next round featuring games.

Vote For Stuff!

Could work with both - simply swap game around when they come up And rotate a stale batch every now and then.

Vote For Stuff!

The point of featured games is to show the best of the bunch though, not the freshest.

I do like the idea of having the silver (or maybe bronze) stars beside the previously featured games in the list, but I don't think rotating games in and out would be worthwhile.
