Medieval peoples believed that when the decaying flesh of oxen or slaughtered calves are left outside, it would give birth to creatures called "Bees".
Bees are the smallest of the birds. Pictured here, sitting on a man's finger. Bees live in community, choosing the most noble among them to be their king, who oversees all matters of honey-making and warfare. Their laws are based on custom, and so the king does not enforce them. Rather, a Bee caught breaking the law will sting itself to death to regain its honour.
Each Bee has its own duty. Some will watch for rain, others will valiantly protect the hive from potentially threatening animals who make loud noises. Their craftsmen are known for making honey from dew drops, and wax from flowers. This Bee appears to be some sort of scout for the colony, with a trumpet to warn the hive of danger, and a smoke gun, which it uses to keep humans in check.
