A place to sit back, hang out, and make monkey noises about anything you'd like.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

For some reason, I decided to do a 5 and a half day vegan challenge. Yeah.

In this post, I'll be writing down what I ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner and my thoughts. But being a hardcore meat-lover and dairy-lover, I would probably be moaning throughout the next 5 and a half days.

The reason why I decided to cut 7 days into 5.5 days is because, I've got a birthday dinner coming up on the 6th and it includes a lot of ribs. Being the meat lover I am, I decided to cut it right before the dinner.

The challenge will start at midnight UTC +8, 31st of July, because I live in that time zone (Duh), and it will end at 18:00PM UTC +8, 6th of August.

So, I'll see you guys in the morning (6PM for those who live on the west coast).

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Get ready: a motivational fact heading your way with all the speed of the internet RIGHT NOW fresh from The Vegan Society. Is this a reputable source? Who knows! What we do know is that 5.5 days without those sweet, sweet ribs is an effort that'll need all these facts to help it along.

When you awaken as a vegan, you'll be about 33% less likely to prematurely die, less susceptible to nasties such as diabetes, heart disease and even prostate cancer! (https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/health)

But that's not all. If it weren't 2016 (which it is, sure, but just hang with it, okay?) and was in fact 2050 and everyone adopted the vegan lifestyle then 8.1 million premature deaths would be prevented. This fact brought to you by Oxford University's specialist food branches (something to do with carcinogens? Just go with it).

So, to conclude, if you feel brighter and healthier this morning, then it's probably because you're less likely to die.

Wishing you all the best on your 5.5 day journey!

Thanks for the motivational post you did there!

Didn't know meat + dairy products + any other animal stuff did such bad things?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Well, to be fair, just about everything gives you cancer, and a lot of fatty/caloric things in a diet can cause heart attacks and diabetes whether they're vegetable or animal. It all depends on your personal tastes and what you need to be healthy. Some people find it easier to focus on healthy things when they restrict their diets to certain stuff. It is very easy to go overboard on meat and milk, because they're full of caloric proteins and fats.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Meat and dairy farming is also really unsustainable. So many forests are being cut down for cow farms.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

So you can only eat mushrooms, vegetables and fruits right? Good luck, I'm looking forward to the results.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

He can eat anything whose production does not involve/use animals in any way. McDonalds chicken nuggets, for example.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Okay... although McDonalds chicken nuggets seem like and odd example.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

The taste might've been loosely inspired by chickens, but the paste is 100% organic fungal slime.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

That's a lie! They occasionally mix in horse hooves or fish feces!

I see what you did there. I like what you did there.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I realize now. I feel stupid.

I thought mushrooms were a plantimal...  Is that legal?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

It's half-plant, and plants don't have feelings. That's why you can never truly love the green starter pokemons.

What about Vin Diesel's Guardians of the Galaxy character? Damn that loveable little twiglet.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

There is no afterlife in store for that soulless vegetable! Veganism is morally superior!

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Hmm.  A pokemon diet.  I can see the weight loss benefits, but it might wreak havoc on general health.

And I'll add that to my never ending list of animes to watch.

Thanks!

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Mhm, the entire season is available for viewing as of right now. Definitely one of my favs of the 2016 season of anime spring line-ups.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Okay, lemme stop with these kind of posts. Lol it's one of the many ending songs from Relife, which is about a twenty-seven year old neet (basically unemployed) whose chosen to take part of experiment that makes him younger and sends him back to high school to try and change his life around. Ugh, it's way better than I make it sound but try it! I hear the anime doesn't really do the manga much justice but it's still pretty gewd.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I'll give it a shot!

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Hmmm... I really don't know what's the point of this, or why anyone should care.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

That's nice Steve.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

What? He's decided, for no reason, to do something that a lot of people do permanently for less than a weak. How useless.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

It's a Challenge. It's a thing that people on the internet arbitrarily do because there's some pride in saying you "Beat" the challenge, and then you have to challenge someone else. In the case of the Vegan Challenge, you become a Vegan for this amount of days, and if you survive without becoming a Vegan, you win. This is considered entertainment in some of the more inane parts of youtube.

Doesn't compare to the days Honor4Ever bet $50 he could go without sleep for a week.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I  understand the concept. I just don't see why anyone should care. It's like me doing the "CRAZY TEA CHALLENGE!" where everyday I make a cup of tea and describe the making and drinking of in extraordinary detail. I could do that. But it's useless and no one should care.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Arguably, all fiction that isn't a blatant allegory or hypothetical example. It entertains some people, and that's the use of it. That's the practical use of it. It doesn't make statements, it doesn't  Star Wars is useless, and nobody should care, but god dammit, there's a whole convention for Star Wars people. You could do the "CRAZY TEA CHALLENGE!" and the gimmick would get you about 100 views on youtube at least, because that's fun for some people.

If you're going to criticize something meant for entertainment just because it doesn't entertain you specifically, that's fine. This isn't my cup of crazy tea either, but to stay true to my statement, the only things I'd be able to read for entertainment are things that have practical uses and real-world reasons for people to care. If you need to get ahold of some volumes of The Abstracts or maybe just some engineering handbooks, I know a guy.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Yes, and as I said, I don't understand why anyone could care about this attempt at entertainment. What's your point?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Really just wanted to hash in the fact that I don't understand why people should care about The Last of Us.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

If you're really going to take the stance that "everything is subjective", all your criticisms of any storygame on this site are irrelevant.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I was taking the stance that the rules are subjective, because in some areas, they really are. There are certain things some mods will ban, delete, penalize, discourage, that others either don't bother with or to some degree disagree with. When rules boil down to something clear-cut and easy to define, like "No Warrior Cats", then they're easy to objectively enforce. When the execution of a rule hinges on what the definition of trolling and spamming are, then things change depending on what the person with the mod powers thinks trolling and spamming are.

My point is, saying no one should care because you don't like challenges is like saying no one should watch TV shows because the format doesn't appeal to you. People do care, so this is for them. If there isn't an audience for that here, then it'll be deleted, probably, like Ford's Fording.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I think the first half of this is in the wrong thread, no?

I never said no one should care. I said I don't understand why anyone should care. By your logic, you should be fine if this site is turned entirely to shitty WC stories because some people like that. I don't like this. I expressed disbelief that anyone could like it and confusion in the same regard. Your argument is so broad it can be said in reply to any opinion ever. Yes, things are subjective. I'm going to express an opinion none the less.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

That's the thread where I was supposedly taking the "Everything is subjective" stance in, so I was assuming that's what you were dragging in?

No, it's not fine, because we don't like shitty WC stories.. This place is not, and has not historically been, the audience for shitty WC stories. The reason subjective opinions matter is because the audience is essentially what sustains a person who works in entertainment. Shitty things only appeal to niche markets of stupid people. Your opinion was expressed in a way that was worded poorly, then. You can express disbelief, I do it all the time, I did it now, but there's a difference between saying, "I don't think this is entertaining" and "I don't think this is entertainment, period", which seemed to be implied when you made a Crazy Tea Challenge to represent your stance on all challenges, and then said no one should bother with it.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

No, i wasnt dragging the other thread in at all .

So if at any point this site had had more people who enjoyed the shitty WC stories, this site would become the audience for shitty WC stories and it'd be cool?

I maintain that no one should bother with this. Sure, that's my subjective opinion, but it's going to quickly become a hassled if i have to point that out at the end of ever sentence. Bringing up the fact that this is all subjective is irrelevant.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

No, because that happened, and all the people native to the site knew those people were idiots. We're an audience for good storygames, that's the purpose of the site, and that's been the purpose since the beginning. Shitty WC games should be made elsewhere.

Well, in my subjective opinion, that's stupid.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

See, saying "that's stupid, Steve" would've been far better than down to a level of subjectivity, because then we can just discuss the merits of this.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

But if we don't discuss it the frivolous way first, Sentinel's post count won't be as high.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

You've passed 1000. At this point, the sky's the limit.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I'm competing for first with a man who has more than 12000. The shiny trophy only means something when you've achieved something unusually great, and there's no spot in the history book that they'll never write for 2nd place.

Sorry, double post.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

What the hell!? You're not allowed to apologize. You're Steve for crying out loud, now start acting like it!

What kind of shit happened to you while I was conciously avoiding forgot about this site that made you so soft?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I was apologizing to myself, for having to take the time to erase my double post.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Still. Can't believe you would do such an act, even to yourself.

I deserve only the finest and rarest luxuries, like fine wine or an apology from Steve.

Day 1, Breakfast:

Food:
Corn flakes with unsweetened almond milk.

Thoughts:
Almond milk was pretty much tasteless and was almost like putting cornflakes into water. Still hungry.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Well that was fun, wasn't it? I can really see this challenge catching on.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Not sure what you mean by 'fun'. I'm already missing dairy stuff.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Really? 'Cause it seemed like you were having a blast. No wonder people become vegan.

Day 1, Lunch:

Food:
Wheat noodles with various stir fry veg (Carrots, cucumber and mushrooms) with Sriracha sauce.

Thoughts:
This... is actually pretty good. It tastes like a regular stir fry and it filled me up!

WH-WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I enjoy that M-word as much as many others, but I love stir fried vegetables. I have it at least once a week. It's a fun way to experiment with different seasonings and sauces, plus browned off a bit it's good.

I'm not a vegan, but you can make the food taste pretty much as good as anything else depending on the meal. I have a brother who follows a mostly vegan diet. A lot of it comes from how you flavor and cook the food, rather than just the ingredients you use.

If you're interested and I have time today or tomorrow, I could probably PM you a few food suggestions for your challenge.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Thoughts:
Much better than the unsweetened one yesterday.

I think it is awesome that you are doing this! I love the Raw/Vegan breakfast of Flax seeds blent with water or cashew milk, stevia and coffee then topped with coconut cream and blueberries, and a yummy but filling meal substitute is carrot and apple juice,(actually juicing carrots and apples in a juicer) stick to the challenge then reap the awesome benefits. :-)

Day 3, dinner:

Food:
Some sort of vegan Turkish wrap/sandwich

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Hey! I'm curious about how you're making all of this tbh. So, what is it? Are you using a recipe book or looking these things up online?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

The Turkish food was from a restraunt. Everything else was made with what was in the fridge. Since most things that I would eat would be veg, I just did a huge stir fry and put some noodles and rice in there.

Don't. I tried eaten it raw and making kale chips. Tasted like shit. XD

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Kale chips can't be THAT bad. Kale salad sounds like something I should try. I don't quite like my smoothies veg, but I could mix it up with other stuff.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Kale just seems to be a food that will survive forever due to it's taste. I know vegan and vegetarian people that are healthy, but never eat kale.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Well, WizzyCat, If you learn to make them right they can taste better than Doritos. I made them at a big health camp once and everyone was saying how delicious they were and couldn't get enough.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Please tell me how then. My family spent so much time trying to make them...

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

How to make Kale chips:

Things you will need:

A blender

A dehydrator or oven

Cooking appliances bowls, spoons etc…

A good attitude so you don’t stuff it up like last time……just kiddin!! But really, don’t have a bad attitude or the food will turn out bad.

Put In blender(preferably a powerful blender like Vita mix) Sundried tomatoes (a third of the jar including the oil), A cup of yeast flakes,, Cayenne (whatever quantity is good for you), Salt, and a little bit of garlic, just a hint, like a smooch of garlic.

Then take as much kale as you want remove stems, wash, and mix in sauce

With hands, then lay on dehydrator sheets, sprinkle more yeast flakes on top and dry at 48 degrees overnight or if you only have an oven bake at 200 degrees until crunchy.

Its been a long time since I made this recipe but I think I remembered everything.

Curious, so I want to ask how it's going so far since I've never tried to go vegan (but I did try and be a vegetarian for a week until my parents got sick making separate meals for me and made lamb ribs sad)

Do you need to constantly replenish yourself with snacks? If you don't do you get really tired? Is anything else happening to your body (go to sleep easier and faster, etc)?

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Yeah. Being a vegan means eating a TON of carbs. Carbohydrates burn really quickly. If you want to have a dedicated vegan diet, you'll have to snack a lot... like bring a fruit everywhere you go.

Never really got tired on this diet... but you'll have to snack a lot to prevent yourself getting hungry.

Weight loss is something that is happening. People around me have noticed that I've become slimmer ( My mum said that if I were any slimmer... I wouldn't exist). I haven't really done any exercise or physical training this week so I would factor weight loss in there.

Sleeping? No... not really. I wake up and go to bed at the same and my sleep cycle hasn't really changed.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

I did the vegan thing for awhile in high school. It's not a very sustainable diet, you're either starving all the time or you're filling yourself with heavy carbs, and that causes its own problems.

Proteins and fats and B12 is a necessary part of the human diet. Even if you have ethical reasons for refusing meat, there's nothing wrong with eggs and dairy if bought from the right sources.

And if it's just a matter of health, there's nothing unhealthy about meat in balanced quantities. The horrifically bad thing about a hamburger isn't the hamburger meat, but the white flour bun with all the natural nutrients taken out, man-made ones the body can barely process substituted back in, preservatives and the 30g of empty carbs.

For weight loss and general health, a diet that just sticks to a variety of normal, natural foods is far more viable and beneficial in the long term than any extreme thing like veganism or the zero carb diets.

Day 6, Lunch:

Food:

Kimchi soup with instant noodles.

Thoughts:

A pretty boring meal. Soup was spicy in the end and had to drink a ton of water.

I AM SO READY FOR MEAT!

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Day 6, Dinner:

Food:

Sticky ribs, onion rings, roast chicken, spicy chicken wings, pork sausages, a mountain of fries and COKE! Followed by an ice cream cake!

Thoughts:

So much meat!!! I ate and ate until I couldn't even get up. Meat was cooked SO well. Was very happy after that. But after typing out what I had eaten, I can't help but feel sad for the animals I ate. Doing this challenge had made me realise  how much I depend on animal products. Living without the help of animals is certainly possible, but for me... it's almost unbearable. I am truly grateful for the sacrifice the animals made and the hard work of the farmers and such.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

It's both interesting and awful that you feel sad for the animals and actually acknowledge the suffering they go through rather than being in shameful ignorance, have spent almost a weak eating vegan food and seeing that it's not that bad, before deciding that fuck the animals' suffering because you're happier that way. I'm also pretty sure the animals would be very pleased that you're grateful that they're being tortured and killed for you.

There's a lot of suicidal people, and human meat is substantially sweeter than normal meats.

5 1/2 Day Vegan Challenge

Well, then we'd need to breed a human that doesn't give us prions and the shaky-fingers, which creates another animal we have to farm with pwecious fee-fees, and not only are not all of them are going to kill themselves when we're hungry, but they're going to be wiped out by cannibalistic serial killers who don't want to get the Lecter disease, so they'll have to be raised and protected in alternate environments, which means racial segregation, which is bad.

So not only are we brought back to square one, but now you're a cannibal and a racist. I'll take my normal McMurder Cow Sandwich, thank you very much.

Depending on where you live, it may be pretty unlikely that farmers have anything to do with the meat and dairy industry just fyi.
