I think Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is a cultural masterpiece.

They're planning a whole "dark universe" with those now. There's a Bambi and Tinkerbell movie planned as well.

Also Popeye is getting a horror movie. I know Steamboat Willie (Mickey Mouse) got one.

Seems like the horror genre takes advantage of public domain stuff the most.

Naturally I'm all for this.

I like the idea that some pretty iconic characters that have been languishing in stagnation could get some new life and new ideas truth this. But not surprised the first things done were horror. Horror is generally the low budget indie darling, and the plots don't need much to give that thrill of discovering edgy fanfic of beloved cultural icons for the first time as a tween.

I know this feeling exactly because I still remember discovering this based epic in the 90s about Barney the purple dinosaur convincing worshipful kids nation wide to kill their parents and then becoming the king of their new society. Kids who came to pay homage to him on their 14th birthday were decapitated to ensure they never lost their child like loyalty, except for the girls he had put in a breeding program to make monstrous hybrids to police his palace. Sadly, few of us may survive to see THAT made into a movie.
