The Creator and his World

Every player on this site wants to see something out of their stories, some want adventure, some want successful love stories that warm out insides with a fuzzy feeling.

But nobody is perfect and even the best story won't be to someone's liking, someone out there won't like it, even if someone else is saying "It's the perfect story!"

So instead of trying to give someone what they like and giving another person something that they don't, why not allow them to create their own world via a game, hmm?

First of all, this will be a very long story as I will put a immense amount of work into this trying to catch every perspective of everyone possible, so bear with me of you're shaking with excitement about this already.

Secondly, even if I work on this a year, or more, there will have been something I missed, something that I couldn't include of one reason or another.

And third... well, I suppose there won't be a third reason for this, oh wait there is. There will be updates to this game, constant updates and updates so that I eventually hope to include everything.

So... what does everyone think about this game idea? Is it a good idea, is it a bad idea? I will appreciate any sort of criticism going on here... thanks for bothering to read this and I apologize if there's anything wrong with this post, I posted this on my phone, so there might be a mistake here and there...

That's quite an ambitious project. From what I learned about ambitious projects, though, is that it is very hard to work on them on your own. Perhaps you should team up with a couple of people to help you out with at least the planning because carrying everything on your own shoulders is a good way to completely drain you of the creative process. Once planning is done, then actually building the world will be much easier.

I was thinking of asking other users, but the sheer magnitude of the project ?might scare them off. Of course, I still plan to ask those users about this to see what they'll say.

This is something I'd expect a gaming company to think of. I think it's far too much of an ambitious project to work on honestly.

I won't work alone on it(hopefully), plus, I know it will take a lot to complete this, plus, it's good to be ambitious from time to time.

100% chance of failure.

Thanks for your opinion Malk, but I prefer to think that I have a chance at making this, even if it will take me a LOT of time.

Thinking that is stupid. This is as impossible as Ryder wanting to create an SCP-themed chatbot.

Malky, you need to be ambitious sometimes, break out of your comfort zone and try to make something that nobody has ever even attempted to make. I know it has a very high chance of failure, but I will still try to make this.

Do you have any concrete ideas on how you'd go about scripting this? Depending on the level of customisation it could be feasible.

I have a few ideas, though since I am quite bad at scripting, I was thinking of asking someone to make the scripting parts the storygame while I worked on everything that is story related.

I do think it would benefit you to look at the articles on scripting and the advanced editor to get at least a basic idea of what it's capable of. Hypothetically you can do some pretty complex things with ChoiceScript and the advanced editor, but because of its simplicity it means it would be difficult and extremely time-consuming to pull off. Anybody doing your scripting would have to have tons of drive.

Have you found anybody good at scripting who would have this level of motivation, or if not, have any idea how to go about recruiting someone? Also bear in mind that even if they're initially motivated, part-way through creation if they lose their drive to help you; have an argument with you; or stop coming online, you'll be screwed.

Again, it depends on how much you want the player to be able to customise their game, but unless you're looking at a few basic story templates with only a few major plot points you can change (and not very much detail), you're going to need either:

  1. get a very, very motivated scripter who'll stick around till the end (seems like a pain at best and impossible at worst)
  2. learn to script yourself

Another issue I see is that if you plan to update your storygame periodically (which will delete everyon's saves), it almost seems like a game-breaker when you consider that your game will be heavily geared towards people creating stories and presumably saving them. I think it's annoying enough in most storygames, but especially here where people are creating something unique, and even more so if it's going to be complex.

Not trying to put you off making this storygame, but I do see a lot of ways it could go wrong. Hope you consider these issues and what other people have said before you take this project on.

I can see what you mean... I'll have to learn scripting for myself, because I highly doubt that anyone will stick to the end with me at the complexity I have planned for this story.

In theory it's a wonderful idea. In practice it will be hard to stick with because you need to maintain this initial level of enthusiasm for a long time until you've finished this project. Other ideas try to steal your attention. Life intervenes and gets in the way of your writing. Things on the Internet draw your attention from your project until they drain it altogether. I'm not saying it's impossible, most of the best authors on this site spend an insanely long time crafting masterpieces but it's very difficult which is why there are not more.

If you're confident in yourself go for it but it'll probably get harder with time unless something about this idea really connects with you :)

Unlike most of the story ideas, this one sticks with me because I know how much work and creativity a story requires and instead of creating my own universe that some people will not like, why not give everyone the chance of creating their own universe?

?Compared to most of my stories, I actually have the drive to complete it!
