I discovered this site a few weeks ago while preparing to launch a new "choose your own adventure" podcast. The community here seems pretty active, which stood out to me.
Eventually my two co-hosts and I want to start reading from some actual books but it seems like this site has enough stories to keep us busy for quite a while. We've only played through 2 so far but we'll be doing a new one every week.
If you're interested you can give us a listen here: http://www.8cn.tv/podcastnetwork/go-your-own-way
Obviously some stories are rated better than others but since we're new here, are there any in particular you guys would recommend? We're open to suggestions!
I've read some of the stories, and I think a lot of them have sexual innuendo. Usually not major, but a lot of them. :p .
For example, Eternal is a good story, but it has a bit of sexual content.
Eternal, Necromancer and Death Song!
Although those might be a little long for a podcast, I'd have to suggest those.
Wait, wait... you're going going to do podcasts of... what? Story reviews? Reading the entire games aloud? Commentary while playing? Walk-throughs? What are we talking about, exactly?
It appears they are just reading the stories, aloud with some commentery.
I know how it appears, but he never stated it outright, so I'm trying to confirm that that's actually how it is. >_>' Hence why I asked him.
Edit: Ah, so they already posted podcasts of stories.
The three IF contest winning (and placing) stories on here might be good choices: A Game of Life and Death , Through Time, The Price of Freedom: Innocence Lost ... also, if you don't mind sexual content, there's always the dark and exceptional Mommy, can I go out and kill tonight? ... but if sexual stuff is an issue, the first three have none.
A Game of Life and Death has mild-to-moderate-to-excessive gore and The Price of Freedom has some potential character death, but otherwise they're fairly clean. I think The Price of Freedom will translate best to podcast form? Not sure.
Snow might be an interesting Love & Dating game to play and isn't really long. Love SICK might be a good choice if any of you are into incestuous murder.
I would also highly suggest CoGs Choice of Romance, Choice of Zombies, Choice of Vampires and for some laughs, Choice of the Dragon.
The Sons of the Cherry was pretty good along with Apex Patrol. Mobile Armored Marine, Zebulon, Zombie Exodus and Marine Raider
The Sons of the Cherry sucked!
Really? I remember it being pretty decent. Wasn't anything special for sure, but it wasn't bad :p
Choice of Romance was pretty good, in my opinion. Choice of zombies was fun. Choice of vampires ... actually sorta bored me by comparison, which was quite a surprise, I don't even remember why. Choice of the Dragon amused me quite a bit. Reckless Space Pirates was pretty good. Choice of Kung-fu was good. Choice of the Star Captain is pretty funny if you don't mind a really bitchy AI who insults you and threatens your existence at every turn. Choice of Broadsides was fun, too, if a bit short.
Choice of the Deathless, though ... that one I loved. It was the first one I really got into and it's just ... a really intriguing concept to me. You're sort of a combination lawyer, bounty-hunter, diplomat to the demon world, diplomat to the gods, and wizard rolled into one who can potentially (in theory, though not necessarily in game) preform necromancy on themselves, steal the souls of others, and become a god over laws of reality in alternate dimensions.
Not to mention, you begin the game in the middle of a fight for your life and your very existence actually shatters, so the entire game is you piecing together who you once were and how the fight ends.
Since I know that I can take forever while playing some of the epics here, I suggest all that's already been listed. I also suggest The Proposal, Haunted, and Dangerous Memories. I suggest these under the assumption that you might want some shorter games that could be covered in one sitting. If you are interested in covering one of the quiz-style games on the site, Dressing The Part is also fun to check out and educational.
You can probably ignore the following categories:
Fan Fiction (unless you like a particular series that has a story there)
The Mystery category doesn't have anything too big, at the very least nothing that you could really discuss beyond going "Yeah it was good/bad".
Price of Freedom is like, the only story in Everything Else worth discussing.
Most of the featured stories in Fantasy/Modern Adventure/Horror/Love and Dating/Sci-Fi Adventure can be discussed. Some are vastly better than others though. You should also keep in mind Homo Perfectus is a massive series, not just the one feature storygame.
Anything by Endmaster is worth discussing (for one reason or another...). TMSPaul is another author I'd read some stories from.
Listening to the podcast right now! Seems pretty good so far. Well, as for suggestions try Ground Zero, Necromancer, or Death Song.
Sounds like an interesting idea for a podcast, I'm curious how many people will listen to it. As for recommended stories, I'd advise you to consider the featured ones and other highly rated ones. Stories with a rating of 6 and higher are generally of a decent quality I'd say.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I wasn't expecting this many responses but this is really helpful. We're recording our next one tomorrow night so we'll be picking one from this list (with others to follow).
That's pretty cool! The site has a good deal of great games, but a large range of bad ones. Typically ones that are rated 6+ are good.
Just as a note, pornography/erotica is strictly not allowed as far as I know. A few, well written games tip-toe the line though.
I'd reccomend Dungeon Stompage!, which is a fun, and very interactive fantasy game. I don't think it's too verbose, though it takes a little while due to the scripted combat.
not to sound self-promoting or anything, but if you read something really fucked up like http://chooseyourstory.com/story/love-sick or http://chooseyourstory.com/story/dispiteous you would be able to give really good reactions that would (I think) make the podcast more enjoyable and relatable.
I sort of figured they were avoiding the longer stories or the ones with excessive adult content on here.
Didn't think they pick this one:
Haha, we debated doing that story but figured it would be entertaining. And it was! We probably won't come across one like that again for a while.
If anyone's interested, the link in the original post is broken since our host site restructured. You can find any of our episodes here: http://overmental.com/content/tag/go-your-own-way
Well of course I found this amusing.
Never thought that you guys would read The Hunt For Cake as one of your stories... Too damn scared to listen because I was shite back then (still am, but...) and I know that you all thought it was horrible.
Also, the show's name reminds me of a Fleetwood Mac song (which is seriously called 'Go Your Own Way').
Heh, I remeber those. The second was better than the first.
It was amusing. You should listen.
Not surprised they had to split this one up.
Ground Zero 1st part
Ground Zero 2nd part
Ground Zero 3rd part
Oh my god they did Clover Seven? XD
Ooh, there's a podcast! I didn't know of this. This'll be interesting.
They did another podcast, this time of Repression.
Haven't listened to it yet. Wonder if they got the group hug ending?
Forgot how dark that shit was.
I don't think we did...love your stories, by the way!
Yeah, you guys didn’t get that one in the podcast, but you still went through a good variety of endings along with having some funny banter to go along with it.
Now I'm going to search for this, "Group Hug" ending.
