How long are average stories?

I'm asking so I don't go overboard, which people tell me I tend to do . . . 

How long is the average story? like, the readtime?

Go Overboard.  Why be average?  Chances are it wont be longer than Eternal which is about 650k words. 

The time to read will vary by the individual.

Edit: Just make sure the story is interesting.  Otherwise, the length wont really matter.

They're usually about an average length. Sometimes they end up a little shorter or longer.

Depends on your country. The average varies based on demographics of that population.

If you're worried about going overboard because you're worried people won't read it, I wouldn't let that stop you. If you're worried about going overboard because you're scared you won't finish if you aim too high, maybe try 20k or so. Still enough to tell a good story, but not impossibly large. Or just do what you want. Worst outcome is you give up, which you can always try again.

You don't need to NOT go overboard. There are all sorts of lengths here from "I finished this in seconds/minutes" to "OH MY GOD IT TOOK FOREVER!!!" (From "try not to blink" to "even light has to take a break at the rest stop" actually.)

So yeah... Do whatever.
