Do you actually have ideas you have a strong urge to put down in story form, or are you just wanting to write because you feel like it's the thing to do here? It really makes a difference in motivation.

Remember you're not working under any deadline or being forced or even expected to publish something by any particular date. If you want to contribute, your time might be better spent reading and reviewing some of the other games already here, or even some regular book to talk about on the forum until you're feeling particularly inspired.

I genuinely want to write, not because it's the norm around here. I have a idea on how I want the timeline to go, but I'm struggling with creativity when it comes to HOW to get to the next point in my story.

So I was just wondering what the experts here do to get unstuck so that I can apply that knowledge not just to the present but also the future if I ever get stuck again. ,_,

If you are stuck on one part of the story, work on a different part. Focusing on a different scene or different part of the work may free up your focus to find a way to work through your problematic area.

I'll see if that helps. Thank you.

Just write a bunch of random shit that comes to mind until you get an idea, then edit accordingly. The best way to overcome writers block is to just keep writing. Or drugs, specifically hallucinogenics.

I'll have to try that when I turn 21. lol

Where the hell do you live where hardcore drugs are legal? Although if you’re near south carolina salvia extracts are legal there at 18. For now.

I go create pictures of the story I'm trying to write, then I find a song that fits the story, and then I stare at the image and listen to the song on repeat. That way the story is writing itself in my subconscious. I do this for days, sometimes weeks at a time, writing a few paragraphs in between, and then eventually it kind of clicks for a while and I projectile vomit words onto the page until I hit the new roadblock in the story. Rinse and repeat.

Dang. Well first, salute to you, second, I might try that as well! Since I love music and tend to image a battle scene in my head when a good song comes on.

So.... similar to what Fluxion said? Will do! And thank you, I appreciate all the advice I can get.

I personally take a break from trying to come up with ideas for a bit, then come back to it with fresh eyes. Sometimes I also read a book that is similar to what I'm writing, or watch videos about the genre. And, as many others here have said, listening to music helps.

And spending extra time in the shower for just talking in a stream-of-consciousness way tends to lead to occasional strokes of brilliance for me. Not trying to do anything in particular, just talking about whatever comes to mind.

Admittedly, I also have my Idea-In-The-Shower moments, specifically for making up random songs that I never actually end up writing.

Thank you very much!

I usually make a flow chart of events that I want to see happen. Also helps with paths if you're trying to do a story-game. That way you can see/ fit together the events. The way I work through writing is that you have to get through the slog of the boring parts to get to the parts you want to write. For me, I hate writing action sequences. I hate writing combat - but I do enjoy writing dialogue. So I know I'm going to struggle with getting through action bits, but my reward for slogging through is writing my favorite part. Its a give-and-take relationship.

As for short stories, I usually set some guidelines for them. I usually cap my short stories around 2k words. Then I word vomit all over Word. Once I have it all on paper, I go through and cut out all the nonsense that doesn't contribute to the story I'm telling. Edit and boom you get a focused, cleanly written short story.

The best advice I can give for writer's block is taking a break from the main piece your writing. Maybe write a shorter story set in that world, but not necessarily apart of that main story. It helps with world building and can give your audience an opporunity to see into the world you're building and get hype about it.

You definitely seem to know what you are doing! (Well, everyone does, but still)

Honestly, I like the idea of plotting out the story. I actually saw someone mention in a forum about something called Obsidian and I've been trying to use that for story plotting. (Might need to Google a tutorial..)

I also find action scenes difficult. I prefer writing scenes with a lot of beauty in it, with descriptive words like "the soft morning sunlight glistening on the snow made the world around her seem to glow like gold" or "drops of rain dripped from the emerald green leaves of the old elm tree, sparkling like fragile jewels". Stuff like that. Describing someone fighting is...tough. Especially since I have no idea what some moves are or how to describe them.

Thank you for your advice!

Obsidian could be pretty useful for collecting setting details and notes and mind mapping routes from what I've seen of it, I used it for a tabletop campaign.

But looking at your profile (and your name), can I ask what your previous accounts were? Maybe going back to an older project and trying to rework it would help.

I had one account, but forgot my password, so I had to make a new account, which was rosesareblue. ,_,

If you don't mind my asking, why do you ask?
