The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Find your perfect writing match then duel to the death in an off-brand, Valentine’s themed THUNDERDOME! Oh, my manager just informed me we cannot call it Thunderdome. – That’s obscene, Thunderdome has been defunct since Mizal left-not-left. Okay, fine. – Uhm, how about The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Two longing contestants are searching for their ideal co-author. The contestants will ask our mysterious eligible authors a series of questions, learning more about each author and discovering who matches them best. Once the happy couples are revealed and paired, they will work together to write a short storygame based on a romantic prompt, going one-v-one THUNDERDOME battle royale-style. The stories (and by extent, the writers’ synergy) will face public scrutiny and voting. The winning story and writing pair will win an all-expense paid trip to Paradise Island (a lovely island resort in the middle of the SHAME Pit) and a happy couple photo, plus enough pointless points to pay for brunch.

If you want to find your perfect author-other, sign up in a reply to this post. Two people will be selected to be contestants while six others will be placed in the eligible author pool. Sign-ups will go to Friday, February 13th and the show will begin Saturday, February 14th.

EDIT: The winning couple will receive one $20.00 comm each. Also, I am not looking for some mega-huge storygames.

Pfft, co authors NEVER WORK. Even your powers cannot save them, you can draw all the pictures you want, THEY WILL STILL FAIL.

(And the Thunderdome is coming back soon, shhh. The relaunch just turned out to be a little cursed.)

Alright. I'll sweeten the pot and offer each of the winning authors a $20.00 commission.

Hey, just wait a few months (or years (or decades (or longer (yes I'm nesting parentheses (no you can't stop me (>:))))))), and me, Avo, and Liminal will have produced the best co-authored storygame ever! (Also what might be the only half-decent one, but that's irrelevant.)

I did really want to publish another solo work first before looking at coauthoring something, but then I saw this SLANDER!

Coauthoring has great potential! Yes, there are new challenges too, but they can be overcome!

So, to stand in support of coauthoring, I'm happy to be in the author pool (if I get selected -- which at time of writing looks likely).

Due to timezones, I'd ask to be excluded from the contestant selection. Not answering questions could be funny, but not asking them would be bad for the thread.

I do wonder what the romantic prompt will be. Personally, I view romance as one of the harder genres to write (or to write well at any rate). Looking forward to seeing how this TV Show will go!

I'd like to participate in this!

(Just ignore the fact that I have 2 or 3 unfinished storygames, one of which is co-authored...)

Also, this seems a tad confusing. If we're going to work together to write a storygame, how are we also going to face off against each other? And I'd suggest lengthening the sign-up window just a tad; maybe to the weekend, or something close to that.

Each couple writes a story together. Then those two stories face off.

I don't PERSONALLY feel that it would be fair to stick somebody with a partner who doesn't have a completed game, but this is MHD's contest...

MHD is gonna keep trying to adapt TV shows to a CYS format until she has a smashing success, so all of you better do your best because there's only so many plans in the chamber before we get CYS Maury.

Personally I'm looking forward to Do You Want to Play A Storygame, which takes place after enough of these events flop that she just snaps and starts putting authors in elaborate death traps.

Going to be awfully awkward if you get paired with a 15 year old boy.

Lol, I don't think he'll get paired with me.

That would be funny though

I should have said "and/or banned" 🤭

Everyone, you will get a DM in the next day or so telling you your role!

Everyone should have gotten their role and who you are pining for! So without further ado, welcome our lovely contestants @UnscapeableDeath and @MiltonManThing !

Our first contestant likes long walks on the beach while staring at his phone! Please, UD, ask Eligible Author One your first question!

Our second contestant likes cute cuddly crocodiles and writing for the Gazette! Please, Milton, ask Eligible Author Four your first question!

Everyone, send me one fun fact about yourself too!

Oh I think we've already got the cutest couple possible right here.

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Just want to point out that we're opponents, not partners. I do agree that it's hilarious though (I laughed for a solid minute after seeing who I was up against), especially considering Milton's earlier statement.

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Alright then, time to actually do this; My first question is: What is your preferred storygame structure?

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Contestant Number One is quite a major nerd writer! Contestant Number One claims to have six-hundred folders filled with over four-thousand files of writings!

Contestant Number One says:

I like Branch and Bottleneck. It allows me to put in more choices without it ballooning the scope. Fun to have delayed consequences as well (and so much potential for secrets).

It also lends itself well to having a core opening shared by all (or most) paths, which means that the initial establishing exposition doesn't need to be kept consistent across multiple paths (because it is always introduced at the start -- makes my editing easier).

But it's definitely mostly about it being easier for me to keep the scope in check. I've had too many ambitious projects end up unfinished. Although, now I'm making myself think that I should attempt using the Gauntlet structure more, since the scope is even tighter there.

Author Number Four,

I enjoy writing character dialogue the most when writing a storygame. What do you enjoy writing the most while making a storygame?

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Love is in the air today! Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Let's see what Author Four has to say. . .

I think we're meant to be. My absolute favorite part of writing stories is showing character emotions or actions. Words are cute and all, but nothing gives me butterflies like stealing glances or fleeting touches! And you can't forget when the protagonist shields their loved one by sacrificing themself. Oh, I'm blushing just thinking about it!

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Things are really heating up! Wait. I think I just left the oven on.

Contestants, have anything to say thus far?

Contestant One, please ask Author Two your next question!

Contestant Two, please ask Author Five your next question!

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

I'll ask a totally original question this time:

What do you enjoy writing the most while making a storygame?

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

I could barely keep Author Two from flying through the curtains! Woah there!

Author Two replies: Hmm, well, the things I enjoy writing and the things I excel at are quite different. For example, I could give you a dialogue that I felt over the moon writing, but comes out horribly. Something like, "Hi Bob," "Hi Jeff," and it felt like writing Shakespeare. Something about monkeys and a typewriter. Meanwhile, I could describe settings to the point where you feel as if you're there without throwing a ton of buzzwords through the door. And that I hate.

But hey, while you've seen a lot of anger from me, I think we'd make a good duo for writing!

The Story Game: So you want a co-author?

Author Number Five,

What is your opinion about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...if you were to write about it?
