For tips:  Use the least chance to get hit as much as possible.  There is only a limited amount of enemies, so recovering your health is a privilege.

Buy the lantern as soon as possible.  The majority of the game needs the lantern to get past locations that are MANDATORY to beat.  The grappling hook is a necessity for unlocking almost every optional part of the game without risk.

Sell unnecessary equipment at all times.  That extra gold can be saved up for life-saving gear and powerful weapons.

Instead of spreading out your skill points evenly, specialize in a primary and secondary skill.  Most of the skills you don't have can be easily be substituted by an item.

Congratulations Swiftstryker on having the High Score (172980) - Now if only we could get the comments to show them again :P

Dungeon Stompage Released!

tips: melee is better than ranged. Spot is the most important skill. Most of the enemies are undead, so the mace is really good. Also if you have good enough climb then you don't need a grappling hook. Also GET THE LANTERN Last, but not least, sell what you don't need.

Dungeon Stompage Released!

I'd add that you do need the Grapple Hook for the Crypt section of the dungeon (it cannot be accessed without it). As for the rest, you can get by without it, but there are some hidden uses for the Grappling Hook that you might find useful if you've discovered them.

Some folks have already asked about a second Dungeon Stompage adventure. I'm going to need to finish up some of my other projects first before jumping into something like that.

But I did have an idea about how I could logically expand the current game just a little -

What if I included (with his bones) a Treasure Map to the dragon Serpent Fang’s old Lair? That way, once you finished up with the Dwarven Stronghold, you could go try to find the old dragon’s lair using the map – which would of course be filled with a couple of nasty new denizens (and probably an old relative or two)!

Thoughts?

Darn it - I found another handful of bugs, so I'm going to take the game down temporarily and fix it. Most of the bugs are really minor, but one does effect the story -

It was causing you to not be able to enter the Specter's Lair after defeating him with the soul reaving greatsword...

Read the OP for the chest code.

To keep the book, you just have to not give it to him. If you have made a deal with the succubus, then just use the traveling map when she shows up to take it.

OK, I'm going to run another Bug-Fix. Once again, I apologize for anyone that loses a Saved Game, but there shouldn't be too many more of these and it really will make the game more enjoyable =)

Dungeon Stompage Released!

All right! I fixed the bugs, added urnam0's solution, and re-published. It's amazing how many little things there are to keep track of in a game like this!

I also added a better Explanation/Clues to the Infamous Puzzle Lock of Doom (and noticed that no one was getting the original clues in the first place, due to an error in the code that checked your character’s Brains Stat.)

I also added a few lines to account for trying some other Items on the chest, but the most helpful will still be the potion of you know what =)

Dungeon Stompage Expansion Pack!

Dungeon Stompage Expansion Pack!

I’ve received a lot of feedback wanting Dungeon Stompage to be longer, so I’ve outlined a Dungeon Stompage Expansion Pack that I will add to the current game in a month or two (after I wrap up my Zombie Game).

The Expansion is contained in a Treasure Map; that you find in the Evil Sanctum of the Dwarf Lord Thormingul. It shows the original location of the Dragon Serpent Fang’s lair.

Once you Officially finish the original game (via the Village or your Home), you will unlock the Treasure Map, which if ‘Used’ will open the Expansion Pack.

If Raven lived in your Ending, then you will have the Option to continue playing with your Experienced Raven Character – or – start new as the half demon love child of the Succubus (see below).

If Raven Died (or you decide you’d rather), then you get to play as “Tempest”, the half demon love child of the Succubus and Raven (if Raven was male) or Kragen (if Raven was female; or completely avoided the Succubus in the first place).

Raven will be a God-Like ‘power gamer’ by this point, and Tempest will be an inexperienced yet formidable half demon spell-caster (having been schooled by his/her mother the succubus, courtesy of the Oblitterum Nomeno).

Basically, fifteen years later, Raven or Tempest discovers/rediscovers the forgotten Treasure Map and decides to go see if the Dragon’s original hoard is still there.

What follows will be a Wilderness Adventure with a Dungeon Crawl (or two) and a boatload of nastier Monsters and Trapage to defeat. (And no search for Dragon’s treasure would be complete without a fearsome Dragon to fight!)

Dungeon Stompage Released!

I found another minor bug, where in one particular case, if you snipe at the ghouls from above, your ranged weapons do not take you to the page where it describes your sniping. Rather it takes you to the default (out of combat) weapon pages, while simultaneously damaging the ghouls as if you really were sniping them.

Because of this, you can kill the ghouls dead by sniping, then leave and come back to be attacked by them again (even though they are dead) – but then you can click on 'Finishing Move' to wrap them up for good.

I’m going to fix this, but not until I’m ready to add the Expansion Pack.

Dungeon Stompage Released!

I’ve had a few Comments about the Ranged weapons not being as effective as the Melee weapons.

I’ve looked at this and don’t really see where this is True (if you are focusing on the Target Skill correctly).

Sure, if you max your Melee Skill and ignore the Target Skill, then your Ranged Attacks are going to suck. (Ranged Weapon Damage is also derived from the Target Skill). Also keep in mind that BODY boosts Melee, while BRAINS boosts Target (And BODY also boosts the Bow)…

However, on a side-by-side comparison with the correct Skill at 10 (Superior) –

Weapon vs. Living Undead Plate (-8)
Sling 1d6 + Target 11 to 16 DMG (+5) 16 to 21 DMG 3 to 8 DMG
Crossbow 1d10 + Target 11 to 20 DMG 11 to 20 DMG 11 to 20 DMG
Bow 1d8+2 + Target + BODY (3) 16 to 23 DMG 16 to 23 DMG 8 to 15 DMG

Weapon vs. Living Undead Plate (-8)
Spear 1d8 + Melee 11 to 18 DMG 11 to 18 DMG 11 to 18 DMG
Flail 1d8+4 + (Melee*Melee/9) 16 to 23 DMG (+5) 21 to 28 DMG 8 to 15 DMG
Battle Axe 1d8+6 (Melee*Melee/9) 18 to 25 DMG 18 to 25 DMG 10 to 17 DMG

Clearly, the Crossbow is best vs. Armored opponents, the Flail vs. Undead, and the Battle Axe is best Overall (but only by 2 points vs. the bow and an average BODY score).

When you take the Spirit Thorn Long Bow vs. the Soul Reaving Greatsword –

Weapon vs. Living Undead Plate (-8)
Spirit Thorn 1d8+7 + Target + BODY (3) 21 to 28 DMG 42 to 56 DMG 13 to 20 DMG
Soul Reaver 1d8+6 (Melee*Melee/9) 36 to 50 DMG 18 to 25 DMG 28 to 42 DMG

Here, the Spirit Thorn is much better suited for Undead, while the Soul Reaver is best against the Living.

I said it felt weak based on my combat experience with it. The very first fight I got killed, mutiple times, regardless of how I did it when I used the sling. I only didn't get killed after chuging a potion, which I didn't need to do the first time when I went with melee (and I had a higher target skill than melee).

Second fight went the same way, and I only was able to beat the tentacle porn boss by chuging a couple of potions. Whereas as melee I just demolished that boss.

Third fight, again went the same way. Only way I was able to beat the ghouls was by using pikachu.

Luckily, after I killed the lackey I was basically unstoppable, but up until that point any battle felt really in my enemies favour. Maybe adding another early ranged weapon (for like 150 or something) as an alternative to the sling would help. We basically go from the starter weapon to our end-game weapon with no real inbetween.

Dungeon Stompage Released!

"tentacle porn boss" – LOL *snort!

You make a very good point about the Ranged Specialist and a very limited selection of weapons. I think I’ll make it a point to expand the options a bit for the Expansion Pack.

Let’s see… how’s something like this (in order of increasing potency)?

Sling (Default)
Throwing Knives
Throwing Axes
Javelins (1/2 armor piercing)
Assassin’s Handbow (a hand-crossbow with poison bolts)
Repeating Crossbow (no armor piercing, but multishot?)
Crossbow
Bow
Greatbow (bow with armor piercing)?

On the Melee side of things, I’m tempted to add:

Spiked Chain
Gentlemen’s Foil

Dungeon Stompage Released!

I like throwing knives, Javelins, repeating crossbow and the greatbow additions.

Throwing axes seem more like an inbetween for melee and ranged. Assassin's Handbow sounds good in theory, but due to you having really low health compared to the enemies in the game it's probably in everyone's best interest to just to kill the things as fast as possible.

I think Greatbow should just be a high damage bow, and crossbow should be the armour piercing. Maybe give greatbow a chance to stun the enemy?

Melee additions seem good to me.

Dungeon Stompage Released!

Good feedback.

For the Assassin's Handbow, I was thinking it would do a low enough amount of standard damage that you'd be tempted not to use it, but then give it a 1 in 6 chance every hit of totally messing up the enemy with like 150 DMG or something like that...

Dungeon Stompage Released!

So, basically it has a chance to critical hit?

I think you'd either need to make the chance something higher like 1/20, or reduce the amount of damage for it to be fairer.

Dungeon Stompage Released!

Melee weapon?

How about the Bastard Sword?  It has decent damage regardless of your melee skill, about on par with the long bow.

Another good one is the flail.  Consider it an upgrade to the mace.

Dungeon Stompage Released!

Judging by how complex it is, it's pretty clear that there are more than 1570 lines of script. I'm pretty sure berka mentioned that there was a thousand line script somewhere (pretty much almost repeated code, but whatever).

Sounds like a nifty idea! The challenge will be learning to script. And it's not something you can skip, if you want Stats and Dice Rolling Combat in your game.

Not to try to put you off it, but it is also a lot of work scripting something complex, like what is behind the scenes in Dungeon Stopage.

Each swing of your sword runs a script over 300 lines long...

Of course, even with the additional answers now plugged in, this puzzle continues to be the bane of the game, so I also included a cheat note in the game (pops up when you search or x-ray the chest for traps) - and there is the button in the opening post of this thread, that has always held the first working solution (but which no one ever bothers to check for some reason).

Cheers!

I found a wierd bug. I don't recall seeing it last time I played, but perhaps I just forgot. Anyway, if you're using a shortsword, then you can use the double attack every round after the first one. It does twice as much damage, and the enemies never hit you. So far, I tested it with the zombies and fat man. I haven't tested the other swords yet, but the mace doesn't seem to do that. Maybe it's some bug withthe shortsword of speed? It sure makes my life easier, so you don't have to fix it. :)
Edit: The same trick doesn't seem to work with the entrails. Pity.

This sounds very promising for a role-playing dungeon crawl type game. Probably goes a lot faster than a tabletop D&D game you'd have with your friends where the hours drag on because everybody has to stop and role dice and manually add and subtract numbers. So is this like a happy medium between Joe Deaver's Lonewolf gamebooks and the old text-based Zork computer games?

I'm not sure if you're aware, but this game was actually released ~5 years ago :D
