i think it would be interesting to be able to allow players to write in their own names in to a text-box while playing to define the name of their character.

Then whenever the name of the character would show up in the text, the author could just place something similar to  %%name%% or Label_name 

and the name that was previously defined would appear.

Already possible, but extremely difficult to do.

Look in the advance editor section. It's very difficult so I don't think you will be able to do that.

I was trying to discourage him from doing that because then he might find it too difficult and boring and stop making the game.

Isn't that Sindriv's script though....

It sure has been a while, but do I believe I provided Sindriv with the Script from my Dungeon Stompage Riddle Answer Pages when he was writing his game, which he used to formulate the name thing in his game.

The Script I posted, was my own from Dungeon Stompage, where I used it to allow people to type their answer in - but it is the same technique for recording a name.

And then I think that Lion guy, (Zikara) was who I got the information from originally...

Fun fact: Zikara was actually a girl.

She probably still is, but you can never be sure....

Homo Perfectus 8 has it as a feature, and the size of the script SindriV made for it blew me away.

Any reason the text variable was never made to begin with?

Great, but can a simpler way be made? It'd be really cool, and it's fitting for a CYS site to have that kind of feature because most of the works here are self insertive. I'd really love to have that kind of feature for Devil's Chess, my future sequel to my currently almost complete first story...

Plus, it gives you the option to name your teammates in RPG stories, or to put some background in... I think it's a brilliant idea and could be used in a lot of different ways. I'm not trying to be lazy, but all the stories that would benefit from it would be much harder to make (properly) otherwise... or they might just not get made. =/ I'm gonna make Devil's Chess regardless, but it would be easier that way and I think everyone would appreciate that feature if it's possible.

As a desired feature - yeah, having alphnumeric Variables would be AWESOME!!!

(It has been suggested a number of times before, but it does bear renewed concideration!)

Maybe if he used a python for the script, we might have it easily.
