I've hit a rut with my consumption of music. Once upon a time I used to avidly collect records and keep up with albums the moment they were released, but now I just shuffle through the same playlists and ignore Spotify's frustratingly boring recommendations. So rather than let a soulless corporate algorithm try and find new shit for me, I wanted to turn to the great people of Cystia. What are your favorite albums? Can be in the moment, can be an all-time favorite for you. I'm not picky about genre whatsoever (and yes I actually mean that and won't sputter some "b-but not country and rap!" bs) so whatever you're into, I'd like to hear it. Hell I might even use this thread to review these albums as I go along.

Insomniac by Green Day

This is a nostalgic one :) My parents were big Green Day enjoyers back in the day so some Insomniac tracks slipped into the daily mix as I was growing up. Brain Stew is still my favorite Green Day song!

DSotM is a classic. I like American Idiot as well but I don't think I've actually listened to a full Billy Joel album before, huh. Might be one of my next listens. Channel Orange is my favorite Frank Ocean album though. Pyramids is peak Frank (and now will forever make me think of Shadow of a God-King whenever I listen to it, thanks Fluxion). You got taste big dawg.

Thanks mouse!

I know it's kind of a weird blend between classic rock, r and b, and alt/punk but I came across each of these albums during different periods of my life, and they all really spoke to me lol.

Glad you like DSotM, American Idiot, and Channel Orange, check out Billy Joel as well! Just the way you are, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, and Vienna are quite good, and they're really nice easy listening music. Christopher Cross and Chicago are also good for that Billy Joel soft/mellow rock style that I really enjoy listening to when I'm trying to relax.

Lady Lamb's Ripely Pine. Scratches my brain in a way I can't explain. Sort of Folk/Rock combo if you're into that. It's not for everyone.

Sombr's I Barely Know Her is a bit reliant on tropes in music, but good for brainless catchy breakup songs.

ABBA's Gold. No explanation needed, it's ABBA.

Yeah, I like a lot of music, so really there's a lot of diversity in my enjoyment of music and I often try out new artists. Lady Lamb is a favorite, though. Been to four of her concerts, they're always fun.

I listened to Ripely Pine by your recommendation today. Hair to the Ferris Wheel instantly got my attention! I think it's still my favorite off the album. I really enjoyed how Lady Lamb could mesh soft folksy vibes with much harsher, almost noise rock at times, instrumentals. This was an album I'll need to revisit in the future, thanks!

If I were to list off all the albums I like, we'd be here forever, lol. I'll give some artists I like listening to instead.

  • Karu does good epic orchestral remixes
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic is always fun to listen to.
  • Joe Hisaishi for any orchestral/instrumental. He does a lot of music for Studio Ghibli as well.
  • Pentatonix has done a lot of a cappella pop remixes. It's mainly Christmas music, last I checked.
  • Peter Hollens also does a cappella, but in a wide variety.
  • Nickel Creek does bluegrass. They also have an album named Nickel Creek that has a lot of good songs.

Nier Automata soundtrack.

I took a gander while I was tidying up my place (looking for some background noise) and it was neat! I never played Nier Automata and know next to nothing about it so it was a blind listen. What I found really fun was how diverse the instrumentals were. I didn't get to listen to all of it since there were some forty-something tracks but I did enjoy what I heard of it.

I really like BÖC "Fire of Unknown Origin" and "Secret Treaties," "Versus" by Emarosa, "Disintegration" by The Cure, "Return of Saturn" by No Doubt, "Humbug" by the Arctic Monkeys, "Social Cues" and "Unpeeled" by Cage the Elephant, and all of Pierce the Veil's discography.
Also the music Prokofiev wrote for Romeo and Juliet.

Love, love, love all of these albums. I will say I prefer In Rainbows over Kid A but otherwise I think your list is fire, and you have great taste. (although I'm impartial towards Mac Miller) Nice Vault Boy chicken jockey btw.

I actually haven't listened to In Rainbows in full, I loved what I heard so whenever I do finish the album it might beat out Kid A. And thank you, Suranna drew it.

I listen to a bunch of different musical genres so these are gonna be a bit varied, but I'll only include ones that have at least 5 songs I think are cool:

  • "As Daylight Dies" by Killswitch Engage ("The End of Heartache" was a pretty okay album too but I like this one more)
  • "Nightmare" by Avenged Sevenfold (this was the last one with their former drummer The Rev before he died and it goes pretty hard)
  • "Blue Album" by Weezer (I just think it's neat)
  • "Sublime" by Sublime (Not every song in this one is great, but like half the album is extremely solid)
  • "dying lately" and "Life in General" by Jake Hill (he usually does a lot of rap/metal, but I prefer these albums where he does softer pop/punk songs)
  • The entire Yakuza 0 Original Soundtrack
  • "Hybrid Theory", "Meteora" and "Minutes to Midnight" by Linkin Park (I enjoy Linkin Park. but not the new stuff they're doing now without Chester since he died.)
  • "V" and "Songs About Jane" by Maroon 5 (alternatively, the "Maroon Go" soundtrack posted by Siivagunner on youtube is pretty peak)
  • The entire Payday 2 original soundtrack
  • "College Dropout", "Late Registration" and "Graduation" by Kanye West (I miss the old Kanye)
  • "Man on the Moon 2" by Kid Cudi (Man on the Moon 1 was also okay)

I realize that I've listed quite a lot already so I'll just stop here but these are what came to mind.

I thought the Blue Album by Weezer was pretty neat when I listened to it the first time, and Only in Dreams was my favorite song for like a solid year and is still high up there for me. I would definitly reccomend giving that album a listen. It's not my favorite, but it's pretty cool, like Tim said.

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

My favorite on the Blue Album is probably Undone, it used to be Say it Ain't So until I saw a video where someone isolated Matt Sharp's funny backing vocals and can no longer unhear it and take the song as seriously.

I am also a fan of the Green Album but not as much. The Teal Album with the cover songs was also pretty good renditions but I felt adding a cover album to the list instead of the original bands was a bit iffy.

I do enjoy that Weezer releases an album called "Weezer" with a different colored cover every few years.

I also think the Blue Album is neat. More of a Pinkerton fella myself tbh. But still a banger regardless.

I don't really enjoy Pinkerton all that much, not really a fan of the sound. But I can understand it.

Some recommendations I've enjoyed listening to over the years and you've probably haven't consumed through sheer osmosis.

So the classic laid back dad music
Nothing like the sun, Sting
Brand new day, Sting
But seriously, Phil Collins
Avalon, Roxy Music
Wallflower, Diana Krall
Fade Into Light, Boz Scaggs
Standards, Seal
Soul, Seal
Unplugged, Eric Clapton

The Motown Classic
Too many to name and you've probably heard most of them if you're American so let's just spam artists and hope you forgot about a few:
Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Aretha Franklin, Temptations, Bobby Womack, Otis Redding, Isley Brothers, James Brown, Anita Baker, Al Green, and probably some more I can't think of off the top of my head.

Rap
Yeah too many too name. You've probably heard everything from for example 2pac and Ye I imagine, so let's go with some others.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvXR6D-Ti08&list=RDNvXR6D-Ti08&start_radio=1
That specific fan mixtape with MF Doom and Sade
Layers, Royce Da 5'9
Murda Music, Mobb Deep
Liquid Swords, GZA
Evol, Future and Rodeo, Travis Scott for some more recent stuff
Europa, Taco Hemmingway and Eredivisie, Snelle for foreign stuff

The Franks
Frank Ocean, Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Frank van Etten, and I guess Frank Bennett, Frank Black can tag along.

Synths
History of Man, Illangelo (produced weeknd's trilogy as well so around that vibe)
Aleph, Gesaffelstein
4:23, Mike Dean

Old Dance music
Uhh, yeah let's just name a few and click on their top listened track to get the classics. This ain't really the album genre.
DJ Jean, Underdog Project, Guru Josh Project, Alex Gaudino, Fedde Le Grand, Zombie Nation, Faithless, Fisher, Gigi D'augostino, Tiesto

Hardbass
Top Shelf Hardbass, uamee
HardKvas, DJ Blyatman
Old School Collection, XS Project
The Album, Hard Bass School

The modern smooth jams
Channel Orange, Frank Ocean
Honeymoon, Lana Del Rey
Kiss Land, Weeknd

When the smooth jams don't work:
Kind of Blue, Miles Davis, but my single all-time favorite track would probably be the generique in Ascenseur pour l'échafaud. Insane how he improvised the entire thing.
Deuces Wild, BB King
After Paradise, Snowy White

Figure that's about enough without drowning out the thread completely

Kiss Land is so underrated.

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

Yeah as much as I am happy for the guy with his pop success from everything after Beauty Behind the Madness, Trilogy and Kiss Land are his only two albums with any real staying power for me. It's 10 years later and they're still as good as the first time I've heard them.

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

I fuckin love Trilogy, I had that shit on loop for like six months straight. I personally really enjoyed After Hours too but it is definitely more poppy than his older stuff so I can understand how that might turn off some fans.

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

Oh yeah, the latter stuff isn't bad at all. Hell, there's some bangers on every album that are fire every time they come on the radio. But as an album they don't got that authentic something that let them stay fresh for years and years. Pretty much dropped After Hours and Until Dawn within a month or two of listening and didn't bother with his newer stuff

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

Yeah Dawn FM was kind of a step down from After Hours, didn't listen to it nearly as much. Haven't heard like any of his newer songs from the last year or two, I just haven't felt like it I guess.

Kind of Blue is a favorite of mine in terms of jazz, idc how casual that sounds. Seriously one of the most relaxing vinyls of mine to put on when I'm doing chores and relaxing. Love a good Lana Del Rey record. Norman Fucking Rockwell is my favorite of hers but I'll never get tired of her other stuff. Nice mix of rap genres you got too. I haven't gotten into the foreign stuff though, worth taking a look. I had a manager who was heavily into the hardbass scene. You'd hear the thumping from way outside his office haha. It'd be fun to explore your list and see what y'all had in common tunes-wise. Overall really cool list you got. Giving me lots of listening homework haha

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

Oh I meant to reply to this but kinda didn't. Guess it's better this way since you've probably had the time to try a few albums out and the thread gets another bump to the top!

Yeah I've found jazz enjoyers to be among the most gatekeepy pretentious types of people. (Oh yeah, if you haven't heard this obscure artist only vaguely and regionally known in the 60's on the original vinyl player he pissed on, you aren't a true fan!) In any case, never feel bad about enjoying anything Miles Davis because that guy's the goat for a reason. Same with Chet Baker and John Coltrane, really.

Also lol. Norman Fucking Rockwell is my go to album to sleep on the plane. I fly like twice a year to Poland and the trip lasts exactly as long as the album itself. So at this point I've been pavlov'd to enter deep sleep at Mariner's and wake up at happiness is a butterfly.

Also what's your big ol' list of recommendations?

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

My favorite band to recommend is Ghost. Love their style and symphonic type beats.

If you want something really out there - check out Pete and Bas. They're a couple of old ass English Drill rappers. Its  a funny concept but their bars are tight, yo.

Mousecore's Thread of Musical Merriment

English drill is something I never explored actually. I'll have to investigate. Ghost is a fun one! I have a buddy who's an insane fan of theirs so I've heard much about them.

So this was meant to be a reply to Enter but I also meant to make my own list of recs anyway so fuck it I'm replying here. I figured it was lame to beg other people for recommendations but not also give my own. What I've been listening to this week: Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath - I was a major metalhead when I was younger, and even if I don't have as strong an affinity for the genre now, I'll always respect Ozzy's Sabbath stuff. Outside its fire ass self-titled intro, this album is seriously kind of funky and has a diverse sound to it. Exuma, the Obeah Man by Exuma - I was reminded of this album this week and decided to give it another listen. I can't say I have Bahamian folk music in my daily rotation but Exuma made quite a banger here. Live. Love. A$AP by A$AP Rocky - I love a nice, head-empty rap record. This is a fun one for working out or driving around with some friends. Four-Calendar Cafe by Cocteau Twins - One of my favorite albums by one of my favorite artists. I have a major soft spot for dreampop so this was an instant love for me when I first heard it, if you're into that kind of stuff then give this one a try. Songs for the Deaf and ...Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age - I didn't listen to both of these in full this week or anything, but songs from both leaked into my daily mix and I fucked with them heavy. Good accompaniment for working out and driving. I should get into QotSA more, was a bigger fan a few years ago than now. And finally I'm going to second Liminal's recommendation of Lady Lamb because I listened to Ripely Pine and had a lot of fun with it.
