Hey guys, I just want to make it clear that the featured games are not set in stone and if you think that other games are better, you should reply in this thread. Keep in mind though, that there can be a maximum of 6 featured stories per category!
If you'd like to nominate a storygame for featuring, you must also nominate the story it should replace, providing that there are already 6 featured stories in the category.
Also of note, I'm of the opinion that you guys are rating stories way too highly. You shouldn't be giving more than a couple 8s and a handful of 7s! By rating so many stories so highly, you're making it so that high ratings don't reflect incredible quality.
So far, the following stories have been nominated:
Dungeon Stompage over Innkeeper - Declined because while I would feel comfortable featuring Dungeon Stompage in a weaker category, I feel that fantasy is our strongest category and Dungeon Stompage's plot isn't strong enough to warrant a spot. That being said, Dungeon Stompage is an excellent game and demonstrates incredible advanced editor usage. In the end, both Dungeon Stompage and Innkeeper bring a fresh perspective to the genre, but Innkeeper is the superior work of fiction.
Dungeon Stompage over Magus: Betrayel - Accepted. I am loathe to lose Magus as a featured storygame as I believe that it's the longest featured story on the site now, but the time has come. Magus is linear, unfinished and basic, and while it may be the site's best written storygame, its shortcomings mean that it's no longer featurable in the site's strongest category.
A Dog's Life over N/A (there is room for it) - Declined because A Dog's Life doesn't meet the minimum standards for a featured story game, in my eyes. The writing could use some polish and I didn't feel that the author used the POV of a dog in a useful or novel fashion. I also thought that the plot was not particularly unique or interesting and there was little character development. I also felt that using the same device that Sethaniel uses in Snow is becoming a little tired and needs to be used more judiciously or to greater effect.
Avery M: Dead Man's Journal over Creature II - Accepted. Excellent storygame.
The Ocean's Daughter over Desperate Heart - Declined. I don't feel that The Ocean's Daughter meets the minimum site standards for featuring. The story is somewhat juvenile, and Fergie's dialogue leaves a lot to be desired. That being said, this is a good story that Fergie can be proud to have written, especially considering her age.
Project Origin: Unraveling (Part 1) - Declined. This story is not a choose-your-own-adventure, per se, as it's entirely linear and also, actually quite short. Sabley could have put a lot more into this.
Terra Proxima: The Lines are Drawn over Mechanized Assault Unit - Declined. Both of these storygames are very good and while Terra Proxima is a more ambitious project, MAU is more well written.
MyVacation in Modern Adventure (Space Available) - Accepted. No brainer, what an excellently complex sandbox style game.
Through Time over Orpheus - Accepted. Through Time is a superior storygame and Orpheus is too linear.
A Game of Life and Death over DZD 3 - Accepted. Die Zombie Die! is a fabulous series by an old friend but the time has come for new-wave horror. DZD feels too outdated to remain featured.
The Price of Freedom: Innocent Lost over N/A - Accepted. I haven't ready this story through to the end but the writing is of a high enough quality to warrant its featuring. Briar does a very great job of reeling the reader into the plot and the characters seem believable enough. The storygame isn't perfect but it is featurable in Everything Else.
Tower of Riddles over Dangerous Memories - Declined. Tower of Riddles is by no means a bad storygame, and it's more literally a puzzle than Dangerous Memories is. The core value of Mystery & Puzzle isn't to create intricate quizzes, it's to create storygames with plots that feature a mystery at the core of their plot, or puzzles as plot devices. Tower of Riddles is basically a tough multiple choice quiz. There's no plot, no character development and it's not really a story. I'm not going to make an outright blanket statement saying that games without plots can't be featured, but in Mystery & Puzzle, I'm looking to feature stories that integrate mystery/puzzle as a core piece of their plot and concept. I also feel that the CYOA medium does not suit itself to riddles very well, as the majority of riddles in Tower of Riddles were very, very easy, simply due to the fact that they were forced to be multiple choice.
Yippie for Avery M! ^_^
On the note of rating games too highly, I've got to say that I now reserve the 1 rating for troll games. Which is good news for non troll writers, since they automatically go up a point on the basis of them not writing games that're 2 pages long, or kitty porn
I've been very slowly compiling my story ratings so you can get an idea of how I'm personally rating.
As I add more stories, you'll see how few get ratings of 6 or higher.
You seem to be at the same amount you were at like, last year when you first started that haha.
I've added like 4 since. It's a SLOW work in progress haha.
To be honest though, I personally wouldn't use the same rating system as you. I'm happy to rate any game an 8 if I think it's good enough to be published and sold as a book or a game. Looking at the list I'm thinking, if all of Endmaster's most popular works are a 7, then does an 8 even exist?
Sure, OMS and 2 of the Homo Perfectus stories have consistently been 8s.
I also tend to accumulate A LOT of 1s.
From angry people saying "The opening paragraph was very disconcerting considering that I am a lesbian."
(And the last paragraph. And the middle paragraphs.)
I think I once commented on an EndMaster Game (when I first started on the Site) something along the lines of 'While I find this story completely detestable, it certainly is very well written' ^v^
Meh, i'd easily consider Eternal, Death Song and Necromancer to be much more enjoyable (different tastes, I suppose).
So I'm the only one 'round here who thinks his "real world' stories are better? Well, not as "stories", but as settings I actually find the incest parts hilarious
Uhh... Yep, I'd say you're probably the biggest incest fan on the site
Incest is disgusting but Endmaster potrays it in a... "cool" way (can't believe I just said that).
I'd argue that my "real world" stories tend to have more choice options so I suppose they're "better" in that regard. They aren't as story driven though.
To be fair, JJJ didn't let you rate on his story unless you got a full ending, meaning everyone who played and lost didn't get a chance to rate it.
I'm almost positive it'd be a 7 just like most other stories had he not done it that way (inversely, I'm sure most of your games would be 8s if you only let people rate on good endings).
Lol. Yeah, that's a point. Wonder if the 1s on Tower of Riddles are all from angry people who couldn't figure out how to kill the wizard.
..........ummmmmm *looks around nervously*.
That would be a damn shame, considering that is, to this day, my favorite puzzle on the whole entire site.
D'awhh, thanks Kiel ^_^
If Eternal is not an eight in your mind I'm willing to supply, and pay for, a psychiatrist. Haha
Makes me wonder what else you're willing to supply.
Cool. @Endmaster loves psychiatrists.
Zeh edit button is strong vith zis one.
Unfortunately, Jmgskills unpublished all of his games. One of them shoulda been featured for fan-fiction though.
He did? He had one Star Wars story that I believe was consistently an 8 as well, or hovered between 8 and 7 a lot.
Kind of surprised one of them didn't get featured. I suggested it once, but I never read them so I guess I don't know how good they were or not.
Yeah, something about not wanting people to feel bad and think there'll be more sequels. It's a pity though, since his 8th one was rated 8/8 and used to hang around the 'top-rated' category a lot.
I definitely think that Star Wars, A New Galaxy needs to go, haha. I wrote that when I was 14ish and it shouldn't be a featured story. We just need to find the right replacement. Actually, I'm going to start by unfeaturing it.
What about Simplesabley's project origin? That was pretty good-
Edit: Then again, it's part of a series. So nevermind...
Being part of a series doesn't disqualify it... there's a featured Homo Perfectus. However, it's completely linear. That disqualifies it.
That and I don't think it ever got finished.
What about "The Make Believe Sand-Box?" That was pretty decent.
Which category is that in?
Love and Dating. Haven't read it yet though, so can't comment.
Please read the OP, EarthCollision. I state exactly how you should recommend a story for featuring.
Okay, thanks JJJ.
Considering that we don't have enough school based to fill the features list, it's ok to have both featured.
Hmm, 3J? Can you check out this storygame?
Just wondering what you'd rate it as.
Uh... Please? XD
I'll get to it. I won't get to it faster if you ask more times though.
Terra Proxima: The Lines are drawn OVER Mechanised assault unit.
I feel that Terra Proxima: The lines are drawn was certainly excellent, not a single grammar mistake to pick up and very interesting.
I feel mechanised assault unit was alright, but it was a bit linear and grammar errors were found.
I actually proofread parts of Terra Proxima for Rommel back in the day, we played a weekly dungeons and dragons game where he was a gnome and we talked quite a bit about it.
I like Terra Proxima a lot, but I don't think it's nearly as well written as MAU.
Unpublished storygames cannot be featured.
I'll do that. I'm more likely to remember if you make a post when it's back up for good.
It's back up.
MyVacation has been featured.
Cool, congrats AppDude.
So... Question! You know how you get a point for recommending a story game for featuring? ... If you recommend your own story game and it gets featured, do you still get the point for recommending it?
The point is only given if the game is featured... if you recommend your own game, just be happy with the 100 points.
Awhh, no fair
Does anyone think Alpha Wolf is a little old for its time? The most recent comment was a year ago, with the rest being in 2008.
I'm so confused. First of all, what does 'old for its time' even mean? Second of all, it's not featured, so I'm not sure why you brought it up in that fashion?
Yeah I don't get it either.
And the most recent comment was 3/26/2014!
Shit, never mind then.
I recommend Through Time by Killa_Robot to be featured in the Love and Dating category! Thinking it should replace Desperate Heart.
*Feels very smug for bagsying the recommending point before anyone else.* ^_^
I second this :P
I third this just because Tanpon seconded it
Replying so you can't edit out this artistic, flowery nickname of ingenuity. Jk, i'ts a good game too.
It's getting featured. But Desperate Heart or Orpheus? Orpheus' complete linearity is a big turn-off, is Desperate Heart that linear too?
There are, I think, only 3 possible endings, but multiple ways to get there.
How long is Orpheus? DH is pretty short.
If DH has 3 separate endings, then I think I'll leave it featured and unfeature Orpheus. I'd like at least 1 more opinion.
The annoying thing about Orpheus is that most pages are 'continue' ones without choice (desperate heart had more choices, though they usually had little effect). It was a good story though.
Can't really remember Orpheus well. Would have to look at it again to decide.
Woot! Two for two now :D
Recommending Kiel_Farren's GoLaD for featuring (and replacing either Geek or 331 Oakmount drive). The game is fantastic, and while it's full of puzzles, it fits the horror section to a T.
He published it in mystery/puzzle though.
He did? Shit. XD
... *cough* I could change it back, it's just that people were encouraging me to put it in mystery / puzzle. I wasn't sure if I should, to be honest, since its origin is horror and it is part of a horror series now--but people told me that, with the puzzles elements, it has a better home in that genre instead.
Maybe I should change it back and give it a puzzle tag like I planned to in the first place. xD
*facepalm* Bah, I'm taking a poll in writing workshop, that should help me decide.
Even as a puzzle/mystery, it should be featured (replace The Object). I just thought it was horror. XD
xD No, truth is, you're right, it was written as a horror story with puzzle elements. I guess I wasn't sure whether or not it was, I dunno, "horror"-y enough (not a word? Well, it is now,) in proportion to the rest of the genres in it. Anyway, there is no a horror tag and considering the world itself, submitting it as horror genre + puzzle tag just makes more sense.
If I get an overwhelming amount of hate comments, I could worry about it more. But I heavily doubt anyone--let alone a lot of people--will care that much. So, yeah. It was planned out as a horror and it should stay there, regardless.
(Sorry if I've made your job more confusing, 3J.)
I'd say it probably makes his job easier since Mystery/Puzzle is a very strong category right now. That said Horror does have some gems in there and I'd have to read all of them before I could give an opinion on which (if any) I think it should replace. (Still, based on the quality of the game, I'm sure we can find a place for it ^_^)
I'd say they're both decently strong categories, but I've probably read less mystery / puzzle than you have and more horror.
*quietly twiddles thumbs while waiting for an answer from 3J*
(Thank you for the vote of confidence, Briar.)
*been twiddling said thumbs for a reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally long time* xD
Meh, give it another two years
0.o Two years? Damn, my game isn't THAT long. xD And, wait, it only took Killa's story about a day...!
Incidentally, my other featured storygame was featured in about the same amount of time ^_^
I'll join the recommending party late and recommend that The Price of Freedom: Innocence Lost, by Briar_Rose, be featured in the Everything Else category.
Everything else has an empty spot anyway, and I think Briar's storygame is good enough to be featured.
It should also be unfeatured in the event Briar doesn't publish the next segment within a year.
I'll look at this today.
Late on saying so, but I definitely second Briar's story being featured.
Hey, is Magus: The Betrayal not a linear story? (Wondering; I've played it and it seems that no matter what path you follow you end up at the same conclusion).
It most certainly is very linear regarding endings, I believe. Though you can fail utterly and still live and return, and I think a couple of other combinations.
Just putting that out there then (I've highly supported it being unfeatured for a while now, haha).
Magus has been featured ever since I joined this site. For a really really long time, it's continued to be one of the best-written stories. However, it is totally linear. (I'm pretty sure there are elements that can't successfully complete the story.) It's also the first part of a never-completed storyline.
Tower of riddles, replacing TSMpaul's Dangerous Memories in puzzle. ToR is simply better at the purpose of the category.
Aaand seconded. Honestly, ToR is my favorite puzzle game here.
Yup it's one of the most fun on the site. TOR for feature *waves banner*
I have been saying that Tower of Riddles should be Featured from day one!
And the salt in the wound is... If it does get featured, Aman gets the point for recommending it. (Tehehehe)
Agreed. Dangerous Memories isn't as 'mystery' enough as ToR. And also, it kind of ended quickly...
Well 1/2 being featured certainly isn't bad.
That's actually a really good point though. Multiple choice does make the riddles really easy. Weird, I can't remember anybody else pointing that out.
You take constructive criticism in a manner that everyone should be striving to match.
I'd like to recommend Daydream Syndrome for featuring in Fan Fiction. There is a spot available, and it has maintained a rating of 7 for almost a year now.
I think this should be in the Recommendations thread. I'm not even sure 3J replied to this one since he started the recommendation system.
No, this is the correct place. To quote from the points thread:
"Recommending a storygame for featuring
Okay, sorry. I never noticed that he provided a link to here.
Homo Perfectus 8 over Paraplaniac?
