A place to sit back, hang out, and make monkey noises about anything you'd like.

(That's "Ask Me Anything" for the non-Redittors.)

So, yeah, I'm Bipolar I, with four and a half psychiatric hospitalizations, ranging from three to ten days. I was last in an inpatient psych unit (the kind where you're locked in with twenty-odd other crazy folk) less than a month ago. And since I want a reason to remember to check CYS while waiting on some PM convos, I figured I'd solicit questions.

In general, I'm doing well... working full-time, doing as much aikido as I can, and actually dating someone. There IS life after insanity. I'm also working on a storygame again, buuuut it's in ChoiceScript, sorry not sorry. XD

would you rather fight 1 horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses?

what color is your toothbrush?

toilet paper: facing out or facing in?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

One horse-sized duck. It would be closer to a fair fight. Seriously, tiny horses would be completely useless opponents. I'd feel terrible about myself if I fought them, I'd just end up stomping them all to death.

...white and blue? *checks* Kind of a dark teal blue, but yeah.

Out. Like a civilized human being.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

What!? 100 duck-sized horses is a fucking 200 pound swarm of angry, charging animals with sharp feet and scalp-removers for mouths. 1 horse sized duck doesn't really have any means of harming you. It can bite, but it doesn't turn around very easily. It could flap, but the directions there are limited and it wouldn't hit very hard. It could kick or stomp, but if you've managed to get under either of these animals, you've already lost.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

I am not intimidated by a charging duck-sized horse. The hooves aren't sharp, they're only dangerous on full-sized horse because of the weight and strength behind them. The teeth at proportionately smaller than a duck beak and not designed to open wide. They could probably break skin... so don't expose any skin. They can't climb. Kick, stomp, repeat.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Humans can, by and large, only kick especially hard in one direction. And things always get sharper when they're smaller, because they apply force to an increasingly thin area. You may be able to kick some, but you'll never be able to kick them all. They could easily surround and tackle a person, then pin them diwn and turn their soft parts into a sloppy joe quagmire with incessant mass biting and stamping, where a duck has basically one murder MO, and it's bright orange, easy to hold shut, and easy to avoid.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

"Tackle"? Horses can't tackle. And they're not goats, either, they're not going to headbutt me.

I was a 4H kid, I know from horses. Big horses? Scary. Tiny horses? Not scary.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Horses can jump and bite your legs, and they'll crash into things if they're desperate and a bunch of other horses are running behind them. Because they have less weight to push up, and their teeth are sharper by virtue of being smaller. A jumping/climbing Horseswarm is an easy way to lose a hamstring, if not an achille's heel, assuming you don't wear Timbs or that protect your achilles. Or you could duck down to cover your legs, but that leaves your neck and sides in range, which will be ripped up, because they would probably get through most conventional clothes. This is well over a horse's mass of tiny horses.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

I wear jeans. No way are those tiny teeth getting through. Also, horses definitely can't climb. Climb speed: 0.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Nope! I haven't even burned down a decrepit old shack.

You dating sumbody? You was suppose to be wifey. Lol Nah but really I'm happy for you keep progressing. Glad you still here

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Owls make terrible wives anyway. Killing small mammals & regurgitating their remains instead of making you a sandwich, that sort of thing.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Why owls?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

As I recall, someone has like a survey or something, & included "what's your spirit animal." I used a "before coffee, after coffee" owl meme. Then when the Tavern closed & I needed a new avatar, I figured I'd go with that. I stuck with owls long enough that Killa made a joke about my pronouns being owl/owl/owl's, and I was sufficiently charmed that I'll be an owl here forever.

I did "meet" an owl once, which may have influenced me... those silent wingbeats really are surreal and wonderful.

What's your credit card number? What's your social security number?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

A useful number linked to an account, which I can use to purchase goods and services.

Another useful number, this time a unique identifier for me as a citizen of the United States.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

What are all the numbers in one of your specific credit card numbers, listed in the correct order?

What are some facts about institutionalization that we might not know?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Malk! Malkmalkmalk! :D

How've you been?

Technically I think "institutionalization" is something else... more of a long-term thing. For inpatient psych, they want to stabilize you and release you... though not necessarily with the same urgency you want to be released.

I'd say the biggest thing is that most people there aren't actually crazy... and even the crazy people may well be personable amd friendly. (Hi! XD)

At the hospital I was at most recently, they take the patients on group walks outside if they have "S Status," which used to be S for Smoking, I think. Smoking is no longer allowed.

They do arts and crafts, drumming, yoga, game nights... honestly, there's some fun stuff going on.

Haha, I've been good. Glad to here you're doing better.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Who wins in a fight? Warhammer Gobboz, or LOTR Gobboz?

I have significant reason to believe that TF2 is an allegory for the Western misconceptualization of Buddhism. Is this remotely plausible or should I get this checked out?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

U FOKIN GIT

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

...I don't even know what a gobboz is. :/

Everything I know about TF2 comes from my former coworkers yelling insults at each other and/or their screens. You could try explaining your theory, but I may not be the best audience...

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Gobboz the plural form of "goblin" iirc.

Anyway, this is why TF2 is Buddhist:

There's a fat bald guy who's jolly, like Budai, except his fatness and baldness causes him to become associated heavily with materialism and worldly pleasures from a western perspective.

There's a drunken immortal with a magic sword that eats ghosts, like Lu Dongbin. And though Lu Dongbin is enlightened and has some of the supernatural attributes of a buddha, he may be misconstrued as one, but a Westerner would have flanderised his association with Drunken Boxing and not realised that he was, in fact, a Taoist figure.

Soldier is what one would mistake for Bodhidharma, a person heavily dedicated in a dogmatic way to a single philosophy they believe heavily in. For Bodhidharma, that would be the Buddha, for Soldier, that is America. They both do insanely painful things to serve their philosophies. Soldier blows himself up to fly to higher places, Bodhidharma cuts off his own eyelids and turns them into tea leaves. Soldier is also brags about his grandfather (Likely himself in a past life, the way reincarnation in this game works) who invented the art of fighting, and then perfected it, so that no man could ever beat him, in the same way that, when exercising at Shaolin Temple, Bodhidharma created the movements that would become Shaolin Kungfu.

Pyro, as master of his own personal plane of existence that has vague influence on our own, is most certainly a buddhist-appropriated deva. But which one? Probably Yama. This is where the dynamic between the eastern and western views is sort of pointed out and explained. Yama himself views Naraka as a system where souls learn by suffering, and learn how to detach themselves and overcome suffering, the hard way. To Yama, Naraka is indeed a happy place and a learning process for younger essences that are, in comparison, babies. (Fairy wings optional) but to Westerners, Naraka equates more to a nigh-eternal hell where suffering is graphic and has very real and horrible bearing on their In-Hell existence.

I haven't found a match for the others yet, but Sniper is probably a monk, portrayed as a one-track-minded hermit stereotype who stays in one place all the time, not unlike a critical stereotype of Buddhist monastic practices. He may be Siddartha himself, considering one of the more famous images he's associated with is the shocking sort of statue that features his starved/mummified state from meditating under a tree for so long. The sniper, similarly, is also portrayed as a wiry man of questionable sanity, and his melee options tend to be weaker than the other classes.

The sniper and medic are capable of sneaking around and healing people, common things associated with religious miracles, and there are probably other figures I'm misconstruing here.

They're all ethnic stereotypes, but not racial ones (similar to how there are a lot of stereotypes attributed to Buddhism, but it's widespread enough that it's more like calling out the the stereotype of philosophies, rather than races) they all perform various sysiphean tasks in order to achieve a nebulous goal, much like the quest for enlightenment, and gaining wisdom (Often misconstrued as "Intelligence") is thought to be more important in Buddhism than it really is. The message is bogged down by the empty violence and commercialism (Hats and items) surrounding it, much like real Buddhism is offset by the tourist destinations and warrior monks.

TF2, in its parody of Buddhism, doesn't stop there. In fact, by playing with Christian, Euro-pagan, and Native American themes as they relate to a stereotypical 50s-60s setting, it becomes less about calling out people for their broad generalizations and in fact becomes an affectionate call for people all over the world to be more culturally aware, which is what Buddha would've done. Probably.

What kinds of music do you prefer, and do you play an instrument?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

I have a Pandora station based on The Glitch Mob, but since they're my favorite thing on it, I'm not sure I really have a "kind" of music. I do cheerfully listen to pop all day at work. XD

I played flute and then violin in school, but never really took to them. I did some drumming in the hospital, which was cool. I guess my only current instrument is my voice, though... I've taken to singing these weird wordless hymn-like things. I have no idea where I'm getting the melodies, which is a little strange. But it kind of feels like the vocal equivalent of one of those zen doodles.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

I have these really adorable owl stud earrings but I misplaced one. Can your owl wisdom help me find one of your lost brethren?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Nooooo!

Sadly, your owl has most likely flown off to find its fortune. You could repurpose the remaining stud as a small pin, or buy another pair and have a redundant Backup Owl for when the next one flies away.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Anyways, more questions:

How do you feel about baldness?

Is it sexy?

Could Daenarys' current actor have pulled off the look?

Would you be bald if you aren't currently in the process of being bald?

If a guy has one of "Those" faces, and he's pale, would you be more likely to assume he was a racist skinhead if he did grow a goatee or if he didn't?

I'm considering donating my luscious locks, but I'm afraid people will think I'm a racist.

If you did a BRODYQUEST-Style video of yourself, what would the backgrounds all be?

Oh, and I never did get any answers to the whole question about goblin warfare.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

1. Generally a good look.

2. It can be.

3. Yes.

4. Voluntarily? Nah. Had a buzz cut once & found it unflattering to my particular head/face type.

5. Unsure. Probably wouldn't assume that regardless.

6. Are actual racist skinheads a thing where you are? I don't think they're a thing where I am....

7. No idea what that is, currently unwilling to watch the video(s) to find out.

8. It's just a hunch, but I'll go with the Warhammer goblins.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Nah, not really any racist skinheads, just some very misguided churches. I hear they're still like actual street gangs in England, though. And some hold parades in Boston or some shit. Still wouldn't want to take any chances, though. It's racist to say this, but I probably have a racist face.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

You should have us be the judge of that by posting a picture.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

This is how you pull off baldness:

Image result for sir patrick stewart

Notice how he has rounded out, friendly-looking features. At worst, he looks like a biker dad, at best, he looks like Sir Patrick Stewart.

Fashionably Bald Figure B:

Image result for jet li bald

This is Gordon Liu. Notice how he is also pretty good at being bald. Much like Patrick Stewart, he is bald for a living. He does not have a single role in his entire career when he has not been utterly bald. And that's okay, because it suits him. His facial features are flexible and easy on the eyes by themselves, so he doesn't need hair to guide your eyes around his face the right way, because his face alone does all the work.

HOWEVER,

I'm all angular, like this guy:

Related image

Now, a guy with this kind of face does not have the proper "frame" or bluntness of facial features to pull off baldness. It gives off the sense that they didn't shave their head to be fashionable, but rather because they had a disease, or because they were trying to fit in with, say, Neo-Hitler. I mean, just look at this 'Idubbbz' character. It's like he has cancer or something.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Uhhh, your third example looks fine to me? Reminds me of an ex-boss, who was a really decent guy. And happily married, if that's relevant to your interests.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

PFF yeah right. Idubbbz looks downright evil without hair. He most likely had to be happily married and a medium-high ranking business adult in order to show that he was good despite suffering from supervillain-style baldage! If there hadn't been a boss for him to remind you of, I'm sure you'd immediately jump to the conclusion that he is a racist!

Then again, I have come to expect the worst out of human beings.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

He doesn't look so much like a neo-nazi as he looks like some Jarred Fogel type that has a shitload of child porn on his computer. If anything being a neo-nazi would be an improvement.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Quite honestly, it doesn't get that much better when he has hair.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Nah, I'd say he looks more like the kind of guy who would wank on a bus. Or is that more of a 2014 Idubbbz thing?

Regardless, he'll always look like a fuckin' gay retard with those glasses on. What a nigger faggot.

None, she's an owl. An owl that gets hit with a rock would be broken in 7 different ways and getting put down at the yellowstone animal clinic and/or getting eaten by forest doggos.

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Depends on how hard the rock hit. I'd either be laughing, or trying to decide how best to incapacitate the robot. Or dying, as Sent points out.

What's akido like?

Will you tell me a totally fake fact?

Seen any good movies lately?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

Aikido is awesome. Each technique begins with one person (uke) initiating with either a strike or a grab, and then the other person (nage) does the technique, which generally results in uke being thrown or pinned. I'm at the point where sometimes I do something that vaguely approximates the technique and uke obliges me by falling over, and sometimes I feel like I'm starting to get it and actually throwing. Similarly, sometimes there's a disconnect between "completion of technique" and "me carefully doing a roll," and sometimes it's more fluid.

Fact: Left-handed people are more artistic. (I was just discussing this "fact" with a right-handed artist friend.)

I haven't seen any movies lately, good or otherwise. The last thing I saw was Doctor Strange, which I did like.

How do you have four and a half rather than four or five?

IAMA Crazy Old Owl, AMA

It was "partial hospitalization," which is basically a day program, where you don't actually stay at the hospital. Unlike my "real" hospitalizations, which have generally been for mania, I was in partial for depression. I got worse over the course of the program, and left before my time was up.

2-3 days.

Hmmm... maybe sixty years or so.

You're presumably younger than me, so longer.

Which meds are you taking? If you ever need me to second-guess your shrink, feel free to ask. Of course, anything I say can't be taken as medical advice on here.

Pretty happy with my guy, but thanks for the offer!

Er, no. Who were you hoping to murder? >_<

A couple of people have definitely been moved way up the list given the events of the last few days, but that question's opposite is usually the easier one to answer.

You say murder, but it's a well-known fact that in most cases brain activity hasn't even begun to start at that age.

Agreed. The site offers compelling evidence of this on an almost daily basis. Just a matter of waiting on science and society to catch up.
