Player Comments on TRASH
General Recommendation: This game is either your thing, or it’s not. If it is your thing, you’ll have an excellent time and will find it quite entertaining, and I recommend it. However, there are going to be some people for whom the humor in this story just doesn’t land.
Preview: Can you get a job and make enough money to convince your girlfriend to sleep with you at the end of the day?
=SPOILERS BELOW=
General notes:
The narrator of this story seems to have all the traits I disliked about the Geek, and none of the cleverness and resourcefulness that made him likeable. Even on the pathes where you succeed at making a quick buck, the narrator learns nothing, and nothing in his life really changes.
That said, the consistency of the narrator’s tone and attitude throughout the story ties together all the disparate branches. He is characterized quickly and effectively, and he keeps the story grounded despite the bizarre events that happen around him.
Everything here feels incredibly real. With most games there’s some sense of disconnect with the real world, but all the characters feel like real people you could actually meet and talk to, and somehow even all the bizarre events that happen are grounded by the narrator’s attitude towards them. Character voice and tone setting is done extremely well.
The mundanity and similarities between many of the endings (returning home to Tina) makes a nice bookend for all of the branches. You go out, you have a weird day, and then you go home. There’s a sense of rythym and cycle to this game that ties together all the branches. This game feels quite episodic, with all the plots feeling like things that could have happened to this character on different days.
For the most part, this story just leaves me wondering what the point was. Most of the endings are extremely mundane, with nothing changing in the protagonist’s life, and nothing meaningful happening during the story.
I’m still rating it an 8, because I try to rate games on quality rather than personal preference, and the only reason I didn’t enjoy this as much as some of EndMaster’s games is that I’m not in the target audience. Nevertheless, I can appreciate the craft and care that went into it, and for what it is, it’s very well done.
Specific notes:
-I get the sense this story is going to have a lot of gross-out humor, which isn’t really my thing. EndMaster has a talent for doing themes I dislike well, however, so I’ll reserve judgement.
-An… alligator? Was not expecting that.
-Employer killed in alligator attack, so the only logical thing to do was pick the cash register for change.
-There is plenty of gross-out humor, but so far it’s done in a way that’s more zany than genuinely disgusting. EndMaster doesn’t go into vivid descriptions, rather letting the reader use their imagination, which is more effective.
-Why is Tina dating this guy?
-The description of Jim’s room does a good job of characterizing him quickly and effectively.
-I find it amusing that you become a quasi local hero for getting into a scuffle with a guy with a brothel.
-I suspect th sequence at the pig farm will mean more to me when I get to Suzy’s Strange Saga.
-Also amusing that you accidentally provoke your cousin’s killing spree and just kind of leave.
-Crazy cat lady seems incredibly suspicious, but possibly rich.
-Lol you get cursed to be followed around by cats. The horror!
-I like that characters appear across multiple pathes, like Dan.
-The alien abduction is completely random, but fits oddly well with the tone of the work.
Grammar
Generally good.
Mastery of Language
Eh, not great. There’s a number of sentence structure issues. It fits well with the narrator’s haphazard nature, however.
Branching:
There’s an incredible amount of branching here. Pretty much every choice goes into its own unique narrative. The branches are generally not very deep, allowing for a reader to go quickly through a lot of different possible options.
Player Options/fair choice:
Generally good, outcomes are fair and predictable. There are some exceptions to this.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
This is the first of EndMaster’s games I hadn’t played before, so it was nice to read some fresh material. The first ending I got was the one where you get a job at the burger place and get fired for being in the room when an alligator busted out of the toilet.
CONCLUSION: Not my thing personally, but an objectively well-crafted story.

Whereas the Basement Dwellers and Repression found its humor in absurd plot and crazy situations, TRASH finds a lot of its humor in character and dialogue, and that’s really cool. It's all about atmosphere. Totally successful in that. There’s *so* much dialogue here, and it’s very characterful. I sort of want to see what else Endmaster can do that's not this genre of sad sack losers having bizarre adventures, but it's totally entertaining. I enjoyed playing and I laughed a lot.
In one ending you wake up with a “spring embedded in your ass and a stray dog pissing on your leg.” If I had to pick one sentences to embody this game, it’s that. This game delights in your character’s humiliating ends, and then insists on also pissing on you, almost casually, as if this were just business as usual. Which it is for the protagonist.
The game is structured such that you go out, try to get something done (or not) usually fail horribly (or succeed horribly) and then Tina, your woman, passes judgment on you. These one liners are often really funny (“What got set on fire?” is one that made me laugh.) and serves the same sort of narrative purpose as the end lines of the paths in Repression, but it’s more powerful here in a character’s voice rather than the narrator’s.
The narrator is very present here and mocks you with a sort of eyebrow-arched sarcasm. ("Reach for those stars..." when deciding to better your condition by picking up metal scraps.) A lot of the humor comes from the narrator's lofty but weary tone.
The minor characters have amusing dialogue—actually most of the work of the description is done through dialogue. Dan, for example has lines like “What?” and “I dunno” and “Oh shit” which, well, tell you just about everything you need to know about this guy. Jim coughs. There’s clear, and funny, characterization—easy to read, easy to remember. Cousin Clem has all the best lines, though, with all of the obvious turns of phrase that have to be in here ("...that indoor plummin’ I’ll tell you what!")
I enjoyed this. I think at the end of the day I liked Repression better because I thought it was more tightly constructed and the writing felt more powerful, but this game was meant to be lighter. There were a few forks that were a little less interesting to me, but I think that's to be expected when there are so many of them. The game feels very, very similar in structure, theme, and tone to Basement Dwellers and Repression, and while that's not a bad thing, I'm noticing it as I play through Endmaster's games, and I really want to see where else he goes.
This game, much more than the other two I've read so far has many more microlevel issues. Like, it's actually harder to read without any spaces between lines of dialogue, which is usually, but not always, the case. It’s painful, because with paragraphing, punctuation stuff, and basic spellchecking (“gask mask”; “When Tina comes home she makes to correct assumption”) this already good story would be even better. I am dying to take my red pen to this game but I have been advised to exit professor mode when reading these. But, man, I want that red pen.

Hot damn, I forgot how hilarious this story was. For some reason, while I remember it being funny, I did not remember it being nearly as great as it is. It’s always nice to have expectations differ from reality in such circumstances.
Mel is a disgustingly lazy slob and the definition of white trash, but TRASH did not read quite like playing as a total loser and degenerate the way, for example, some of those tales from the basement did. After all, AT LEAST HE DOESN’T FUCK PIGS. That added to the story, I think, because it was hilarious to see him of all people be straight man at times.
While some of the choices join together again at the beginning of the story, after that every branch is unique—and quite different from one another. The story is more broad than deep. In one branch the main character works for a brothel, in another he is totally abducted by aliens, and yet another turns into something from a slasher horror film. So TRASH is definitely worth making extensive use of that back button for. The dissonance between the events and the main character’s attitude towards them in some of the paths is highly entertaining as well.
Despite the relatively long length of the story and all the possible events happening in a single day, it never became less entertaining for me than it had been earlier, even when I read it mostly in a few large chunks over just two days either.
The entire Cousin Clem path led to continuous laughter on my part, especially some of the endings. However, my favorite ending is probably the one in which Mel is fired from the hamburger joint, fries some bacon, and pisses on the floor. Made me laugh. Toilet humor can be very funny. There. I said it.
The scene in which he is looking for a station to listen to was also pretty great.
“Fuckin’ rap garbage, they need to remember to put the “c” back in front of that brand of…whatever the fuck it’s suppose to be, cause it ain’t music.”
Is a great line that I am going to steal and save for later use now.
That all being said, the humor in TRASH is not for everyone. If you are easily offended, then please heed the warning in the description. I have a feeling that readers not doing that may be a good part of why the rating is not higher than it is, which is really too bad.
If, however, you are some queer who reads reviews before storygames, and you are still reading them after reading what everyone has said about TRASH, just go read the story. It’s great.

It has a really good writing style.
I found the story both funny and entertaining, but what I enjoyed most is the fact that Endmaster showed very well in how many different directions you could take a story. Every path lead to something quite different and reading it was very entertaining. That's something I, as someone quite new to writing can learn a lot from.

This was an excellent story. Forged from the flames of ink and keyboards it truly is a masterpiece. I love this story with every drop of ember I have in my soul. There are three main things that I love about this story.
One, the branching. If there is one thing I love about this story, it is the branching. It is some of the best I have ever seen. For one, every path is equally important as any other. They are also the same length. Most stories have a true ending, so it is refreshing to see a story that just has a ton of paths, and has no overarching plot. Not only that, but every page has at least two choices that I know of. This is such a shock when you are so used to reading stories with tons of one link pages in a row, only to have a choice that leads straight to a death page. This branching style won't work for all stories, but it is heavily underrated. I would love to see more stories like this, but the reason we don't is because the average reader will read one path, and for a story like this, that would be a very short read. The branching makes this story special. It makes a gem that should not be looked over. Now onto the next thing.
Two, the writing. This one is way more difficult to explain. The writing is what distinguishes a writer. While that may sound stupid, it is hard to put this into words. You can tell someone what makes a story good, but this aspect is not teachable. You can know everything, create a story with perfect grammar, amazing structure, a sublime plot, and engaging characters, but still have it be good. It is this aspect that only comes through talent or practice, that turns that story from good to great. EndMaster has truly mastered this aspect, and that is what makes his stories special.
Three, the humor. This story reeks of randomness, and humor. While most would frown on that kind of story, endmaster executes it perfectly. He writes in a way where these aspects complement his writing, not hurt it. Most would get it wrong. Make a story that tries too hard to be funny, and falls flat on its face. A story so random, that it is frustrating. Though EndMaster falls victim to none of these traps. He steers clear of them and the result is a story that made me laugh out loud several times throughout it.
In short, I love this story. It is an amazing work of art that is criminally underrated. I can't find any fault with it at all. If you are reading this comment before reading the story, go read the story now. You will not be disappointed in the slightest. What we have here is another amazing work by endmaster. While this is to be expected at this point, I still applaud you.

This story was a journey. While I did thoroughly enjoy it I feel the way I read it wasn't exactly the best way. The story in and of itself was very entertaining and masterfully written. Though I also don't think this is the type of story you sit down and binge read. This is the story that you pick up and read a branch or two here or there. I think just reading all the branches in quick succession kind of diminished the enjoyment I had out of the book. Not to say I didn't live it, but I feel I would have loved it a lot more if I had read it over the course of a few days rather than 2 2 hour long reading sessions.
In any case, I loved how the branching was done in the story. Most branches, especially all the ones stemming from the get a job page, were around the same length so it didn't feel like there was a true ending. Another thing I noticed was that there was no pages with only one choice that I saw. All of them were two, with the exception of the get a job page and that one was mainly a giant starting point for most paths. Two choices are amazing because you can go back and do each. Them go back and do another and so on. You don't stay on any particular small path for too long and that keeps things fresh throughout.
The farm path was my favorite. I liked the path with the sister more, but the one where the brother finally leaves the place is amazing as well. Seeing your cousin's reactions to everything that happens is amazing and the one where the pigs fuck the girl is my favorite.
In conclusion, I loved this story. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't easily offended or has a light stomach for this stuff. If you can tolerate messed up shit than definitely read this. 6/8

"“What the fuck?” you say and step out of your truck, looking up.
Suddenly you feel a surge coursing throughout your whole body! You’re completely rendered numb and feel yourself floating upward.
You black out only to wake up on a table, you can’t really see what’s happening as your eyes are covered in some sort of jelly substance, but you can make out some strange looking figures with objects in their hands. You know you’re naked and you’d probably attempt to talk, but having some sort of metal object holding your mouth open makes that a bit difficult. You feel sticky all over, followed by sharp poking sensations and you don’t EVEN want to think about all the places you’re being probed…
After falling in and out of consciousness during this unpleasant event, you can see another blurry figure getting on top of you. It looks female, but different somehow. You know its fucking you though. It doesn’t feel all that good for some reason though. Eventually she finishes and gets off of you. Damn, she didn’t even kiss you.
You pass out again as more weird looking blurry figures come in. The next time you wake up, you’re lying outside butt ass naked outside your truck. You quickly get in it and drive home as fast as you can (And having a hard time sitting) When you run in the trailer, Tina is wondering what the fuck is going on.
“Mel? What the fuck? Why the hell are you naked?!”
“Tina! I don’t know what the hell happened! But I think…I think…”
“What?! Spit it out man!”
“I think I was abducted by aliens and they probed me and then one of their women fucked me to repopulate their planet or something, but I didn’t enjoy it I swear!”
Tina looks at you for a good five minutes in silence and then starts laughing.
“Mel, that’s the funniest excuse I’ve heard yet for getting drunk! Hahahaha!”
“I’m not drunk! This happened!”
“Oh suuuuure it did! I can smell the whiskey Mel! You probably got drunk, passed out and had an interesting dream relating to all that science fiction shit you’ve been known to watch.”
“What?! I’m serious Tina! Why am I naked then?”
”Hell if I know. Maybe some teenagers passed by and saw you lying in the gutter and thought it would be funny to strip your clothes off.”
“I was in the wilderness! Aliens got me Tina! I know it!”
“Look Mel, I’m tired and the joke’s over. Quite frankly I don’t give a shit, I’m going to bed. Forget about sex tonight seeing as you were fucking inter-galactic whores. Yeah right, like if aliens DID come down, they’d want you! Hahahaha!”
You know it happened! Didn’t it? Is it possible that whiskey you found just made you hallucinate? No! It happened and you’re determined to tell everyone!
The next day you make a call and later get booked on the Larry Leaper Show called “I was abducted by space nymphos.” You become a town star! Normally you’d try to make a lot of money off of this, but you decline despite Tina’s nagging that if you’re going to claim this happened then you should milk it for all its worth. Its not that you’re humble, but you just worry about having to pay half of the money for child support for the little inter-galactic bastard if the Mom ever comes back, and you’ll be damned if you’re gonna do that!"
Hahaha... the game is well worth a 6 if not just for this funny ending... ahem... which may speaks more truth than fiction. =)

It takes a very special writer to be able to achieve such a thing consistently. Having every single one of their stories able to capture the reader's interest, and quite literally keep them wanting more.

My only criticism is that choice near the beginning that lists all the places you could work, who the hell would choose anything other than the strip club? It's like choosing between broccoli, lima beans, brussels sprouts or chocolate ice cream. You should make that choice a little tougher.
But other than that, really, really great.

Whilst this story, with its many paths and sense of humour, is good, I can't help but feel it lacks the usual EndMaster punch. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing this storygame and it's better than most out there. It's just that there are high standards for your stories and when some, inevitably, aren't as good, it is a disappointment. I don't know exactly what it is about this story but I didn't like it as much. Still, I'm rating this a 6/8.

Whoever gave this less than an 8 rating clearly did not bang the female. I'm playing again to see if I can find my cousin.

Oh my god. Aside from lovesick, this is the most, hrm, wtf! 8/8. I love your writing. Just a question, but how old are you? And no, I'm not saying you're imature. It'd be me who is, since I like what you're doing so much.

I don't know, I just played it because it's an EndMaster game. It was good, but not my style.

Who would've thought that an everyday suburban skit would be so interesting and funny? The way you presented the story was very entertaining. I like it.

This was the first story I ever read from you, and it's the one that initially hooked me to that other site. It's one of the funniest stories of all time, and each path the reader takes is enjoyable.

The game did what I thought it would do... Make me fell like red-neck trailer trash.
I like how it was written, not really the cussing, but I think red-necks cuss a lot.. so it's ok. Overall, It seems realistic, but I don't like being a red-neck. <--didn't affect score :P 6/8
