And is speaking a higher number of languages fluently a sign of intelligence?

Well, there was a guy on Infinite Story that knew a bunch of different languages and said he had a 180 IQ.

He also thought the sun revolved around the earth.

I only speak American because its the speech of freedom. I don't take kindly to these other communist dictator languages. I also don't  know how to count because I'm ALWAYS #1.

I'll let that marinate in your mind for a bit.

I can only speak one, but at one point I knew and used over a dozen programming languages.

Two. American Sign Language and English.

My parents were both deaf, so I learned ASL from the time I was a baby. When I turned one, I knew about seven different words in ASL.

When I was about three, I had to attend a speech therapist to learn English before I was allowed to attend preschool. So yes, English is my second language lol

There's this deaf guy that I work with. It kind of sucks that nobody can really communicate with him. Makes me feel a little bit bad when hes always by Himself. I feel like learning sign language as a kid is something I could get behind for everyone even if most would never use it. 

My mom used to work at a reading library. It's where I learned the ASL alphabet.  It is a skill I regret letting fade.

There's several here who are bilingual I can think of that just haven't wandered over to post.

There's obviously more, but I can think of at least nineteen bi/multi lingual users here I've known pretty well. (Seventeen if discounting Steve and Green who are effectively dead.)

It's pretty much a given for anyone not from the US or UK anyway. In fact they'll be laughing at the rest of us when they see this.

1 language. English. I'm thinking of maybe picking up Spanish through duolingo but I'm not sure as to whether I will have time.

English, enough French to struggle by while travelling, and I studied a couple years of Biblical Hebrew

Dutch and English fluently. I can understand Chinese, but I have trouble speaking it.

I guess Enter is also bilingual in Dutch and English. I recon that he probably knows a bit of German or French too.

Sindarin is acceptable. How else would you be able to speak with elves properly?

I've got pretty decent Latin, and I know enough Old English to be dangerous to myself, but it's been a while.  I had to pass language exams in German and French way back in my first year of grad school, but it's been even a longer while.  But that's all reading.  I find there aren't too many opportunities to speak Sindarian in my circles.  Maybe I need different friends.

Of course, Gower can speak fucking Latin. Hands up everybody who's surprised.

Anyway had to take Spanish 1 year in middle school

Took French 1 year in high school since I had to take 3 years of a foreign langauge and I didn't like Spanish.

Took Latin for the remaining 3 years in high school since I didn't like French either.

Took 3 semesters of Spanish in college since once again I had to take a fucking foreign language and I figured I'd just go back to where I started.

Passed everything and don't remember any of this shit other than mostly swear words in Spanish.

Fortunately I live in Freedomland so I never need to really know anything other than broken English which is happily mixed in with Spanish swear words.

I actually got forcefully kicked out of languages because i was so shit lol my teachers failed me smh 

Really makes you wonder why schools bother forcing other languages anymore when they can't even manage to teach anyone English well enough to write a sentence by the time they graduate high school.

Most of the useful stuff i learned in school you learn in elementary, like learning how to tell time or basic multiplication, but if you don't get these aspects down or how to write a proper sentence by 12 you basically just get left behind and the teachers stop drilling in the basics, its sad, and since you now have holes in your learning journey you now cant do these more complex problems in writing or maths because the basics are not quite there, so a lot of these kids just give up. 

lol, this sums up my experience exactly, except I never took French or latin and I mostly stopped Spanish in high school. I vaguely remember taking some Spanish classes in freshman year of college, but it's been so long that I know how to count to 10 and I know how to swear, that's pretty much it.

Now that I no longer have to take Spanish though, I want to get back into it, just to feel like I'm learning something

Lol, I'm 22. I'm in my last year of university and I'm just about done. Wait do I sound like a 15 year old? Damn. It's crazy how different people sound on the internet. Then again, I would have never guessed half of y'alls ages based on how you talk until I did some sleuthing and just browsing of random old threads.

To be fair, I was being pretty dumb about the shirt thing so I can see why you'd think that but no, I'm just a scatterbrained senior.

My grandmother was born in Mexico and I took Spanish every year I had to in school. End result is I can sort of puzzle out the Spanish text that is right next to the English text on most products.
