Questions about a storygame? Thoughts on Eternal? Any other IF you're playing out there?

Do you read your own story-games?

I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, or maybe if I even asked it before.

But do you read your own story-games after you've written them and sent them out into the world to be read, rated reviewed/commentated on?

For some reason, I don't really find it entertaining to do so.. read my own stories. (Probably why the few stories I have are filled with so many typos and issues..) I do appreciate ratings and comments, of course. And I like when people enjoy my writing. But I myself, personally can't read back my stories. I probably remember less of the details of the story than the people that wrote the featured comments on it in all honesty. Maybe it's because I've already seen the skeletal work behind it? Or maybe that after all of the work with getting all of the links together, it just makes me want to wash my hands with it all after I hit publish, lol.

Tldr: I have only read my own story-games as I was vomiting out the words to get them done. I find reading other people's works more excting than my own.

How about you guys?

I find my own writing really cringey to read after I've finished it and sent it out to be seen by other people, so no. Plus...there's the fact that I know what's going to happen in my own work, whereas other people's writing can surprise me.

That is another facet as well. Since you're the one who wrote it, nothing will surprise you about it.

There's been bangers.

I love reading my own stories especially after I've had time to forget them, but for some reason the site keeps track of when an author reads their own stories and that kinda messes up the numbers, so I avoid doing it.

Perhaps you can read it offline as a guest?

I thought it counted for guests too? When checking your story's rating it says how many rates are from members and how many from guests (although I've found the actual numbers to be unreliable).

This will be on the pop quiz.

Checking now, in that case, just after reading whatever mess happened in wardens.

EDIT: Ok I checked. It didn't say guests exactly, but said that they were left anonymously so I assume that means guests. And as a guest, you can read and rate, although I'm unsure if it actually counts the rating to the total, because it seems you would be able to rate bomb like that since it isn't a trackable account.

Even if you didn't rate it, the times played/finished goes up all the same I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, I'm sure of that.

I write the stories that I want to read but nobody has written yet, so, yeah, I reread my stories because they're exactly the stories that I would want to read.

Yeah, they're good.

As a non-meme answer, the only stories I write are the stories I myself would like to read. So occasionally, every year or two, I'll reread a story and enjoy it, since I've forgotten a lot about it.

And I can also fix SPAG errors thanks to the ability to edit published stories (thank you, me).

It's usually just for proofreading, lol. I've only made one full storygame so far (I personally don't count empty head), but I don't expect that to change.

No, not really.

It may be because as a visual artist, I get an urge to create a specific thing, I create the thing and then I go onto the next thing. It is never about the finished product so long as the product is finished -- and the fact that the process is far more important and enjoyable anyway. Learning skills, pushing myself -- this all applies to my writing too. (Besides, I probably read through my writing a hundred times in the editing process -- I get tired of looking at it!)

Art & writing is like a puzzle for me. I spend time building it, figuring it out. Once I complete it, it is nice to look at for a moment, then it goes back in the box.

I am also unconcerned about the public's perception of my work so I will never be arsed to go back edit much of anything (besides maybe glaring punctuation or grammar.) I create for me, and I'm usually trying to express a state or feeling at that moment which editing may destroy.

And I do agree with the sentiment that I too hate even looking or reading back on my work because my wiser brain can pick out all the bad bits. + Yes, absolutely -- I would prefer to spend my time reading others' stories!

I'm surprised. I didn't know you were an unconcerned with the public's perception type.

This is a really interesting take! You could consider me somewhat of an "audio artist" since I write music. When writing a story, there are certain things I struggle to put into words because I can more easily express that feeling or moment as sound. Long-term, it would be fun to figure out a storygame that can leverage that a bit.

I think not worrying too much about public perception is a healthy way to approach anything artistic, writing or otherwise. Some level of concern can be fine, especially if you're writing to an audience. Ultimately, someone could write a true masterpiece, and there would still be critics who would not only dislike it, but could write 5K words outlining specifically why it's the worst thing they've ever read. That's one of the natures of art and life; it's subjective and you can't make everyone happy.

With that said, most of my writing is meant to entertain myself and others who vibe with my humor, so I try not to get too lost in concern. I have fun reading old stuff I've written, no matter how long it's been. The hardest part is finding time to do it, so I often would rather spend that time on reading or writing something new! Like you though, I don't really like to edit anything too much beyond what it's intended to be within that point in time.

Sometimes I do, but not often. I'll either be impressed by what younger me wrote or cringing at every other line. When I read a good long-forgotten WIP, I can get quite invested in the story and want to know how it ends, until I remember that unlike waiting for another author to publish a book I actually have to write the rest.

I have one that I started then some other things came up and I completely forgot the story that I wanted to write. I like th first pages though.

Immediately after drafting, I re-read it and tweak it obsessively. Immediately after finishing the editing phase on a long project, I'm so sick of it I can't even look at it again for months. After time passes, it becomes similar to reading something someone else wrote, and I'll periodically circle back and re-read it just for fun, since I'm usually in the target audience for my own work.

TL;DR Yeah, they're good.

I do, but not until a few years have passed and I've mostly forgot about it. Personally, I like seeing how my writing has improved, if there's anything I did in my older stories that I could do better now (and therefore apply to my next story). I may end up editing Terrorist and Fleeing the Forest one day to add an extra branch or path, but that's honestly a secondary concern to finishing my WIPs.

Halloween Fright, however. That was cringy. The voiceover that coyote guy did made it cringier, cause now I hear it in the voiceover when I go through it. I keep it around only as a reminder that despite never winning a contest so far, or a ThunderDome match, or... well anything on this site, I've come a long way, and my writing reflects that.

I do to try to find errors or things that should be improved. Also to make sure images haven't been broken by a host site. I should probably leave things alone.
