Player Comments on Attack of the Grue

I don't quite understand your tale,
how did I get on this short trail,
and what is a grue?
I'm so confused,
As to what my quest will entail

I think its as everyone else has said,
the plot to this story is rather dead,
or simply not there,
but don't despair,
You could write better in its stead.

This game has a clever little kick to it, that made me giggle a little. I think it could be far better written, and maybe could have included a real plot, characterization, etc. I don't know who I am. I don't know what the Grue are. And I didn't know I was in the cave to look for treasure until I'd found it and won! However, I do like some of the randomness and little jokes that were hidden in there, particularly when you chose to attack the narrator and got something along the lines of 'You were eaten by a Grue. Serves you right.' But this sort of thing is its only redeeming qualities.

I don't think this explains enough. About anything. We are left not knowing who the main character is. (For all we know, they could be a grue themselves) And what is a grue anyway? It might not be all that terrifying- I have no idea! And once more, what was the purpose of this? Is the main character on some sort of adventure? Delivering goodies to grandma's house? We can't tell by reading this because it lacks a plot. And one more thing... that riddle's answer wasn't even an actual answer because a person from the Village of Truth or the Village of Lies would have the same answer when asked that question. It's not a riddle at all.

It was alright. It could be better with longer descriptions and have more active voice sentences.

Is there a good ending to this? Every path I took I was eaten by a Grue or a kangaroo. Also, why would a kangaroo eat me? Have kangaroos developed a taste for human flesh? What is a Grue? Who is my character?

Why does this story not have a good ending? I had many questions and none of them were answered. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Yeah, that's a no for me dawg. I don't know the fuck was going on or why or how or you know any other basic piece of information usually in a story. Best of luck on your next effort.

wierdest thing i have ever read

I was very confused the entire time. There are way too many unanswered questions and not enough description for this to be a full story.

I always have a problem with every story that has no story. There's no plot here and no development at all, but I suppose I shouldn't really bother looking for plot in 1/8s. Regardless, the lack of story leaves us with questions that are never answered, such as "Why are we in the mine?" and "What the hell is a grue?"

There are several typos and grammatical errors throughout that are annoying enough to subtract from the nonexistent story. The sentence structure is very broken and often just simple sentences over and over, resulting in a narration that is annoying to read.

Like jkulibert2 mentioned, the riddle that the kangaroo gives you is broken. The correct answer, which is asking if the place is a crossroads, is counted incorrect by the game and results in death. The game's correct answer, asking which village he's from, would only result in the villager answering that he lives in the Village of Truth, making it impossible to tell where he's actually from.

Amusing adventure right out of Zork! It deserves to have more description on some pages, but reads like the classic text game it is based on. With the use of the advance editor for items it really could play out like a text adventure.

I died pretty fast in this. Would have liked a little more detail, but I loved that the entire storygame is a reference to the old Zork computer game.

For those in the comments who keep asking what a grue is - this is a reference to old Infocom games like Zork.

This storygame was not without its flaws, however. The riddle wasn't very well-done, since most of those answers would still have worked, and for the most part you're just wandering around until you happen to pick the right choice. Nevertheless, it was a neat game and I enjoyed it.

It saddens me that the three featured comments on this are all asking what a Grue is. I've never even played Zork, and I absolutely get the concept. The whole POINT of the monster known as a Grue is that you don't know much about it at all. No one does, and no one is supposed to. *sigh* Zork is part of interactive fiction's history and culture. Look into it sometime, for God's sake. :P

Honestly it wasn't that good. You really didn't have much choices because they were obvious. Maybe if u made it harder like not explaining the passage ways the it would be better. Sorry if u think I'm being rude. I'm just trying to help.

It was okay to play but wasn't particulary great. It needs a background. Who are you? Why are you in a mine? What is a Grue? Why are Grues so bad? If you spent a little time to describe the characters, the setting and the choices then it would be a much better story.

Alright, I was amused. But I'd like to see this done with actual objects and perhaps a little more description. And, ODDLY it makes me want to go look up the original Zork again. Hmmmm.

Short and Sweet

This was a little funny at parts and had some aspects of a rudimentary puzzle but overall it definitely fell short from being considered a quality story, mainly due to the lack of plot, character or good description.

Never played Zork so the references were lost on me. Still liked the game though! ^_^

xD Haa... thank you for calling back this a fun memory for this aged gamer. To those who don't know? The line "you are likely to be eaten by a grue" and thus, grues as a part of (old) pop culture orginates from the Zork games. An old text adventure game.

The ending made laugh. Man, those Zork games are awesome, well any text adventure really. This was written pretty much like them, except the puzzles were very strait forward, no exploration at all, just go here and then go there. I like it though, so I'm giving you a six.

ZORK! I used to love that game, and dread the words, "You are likely to be eaten by a grue." All that was missing was a battle axe and troll. Pretty short but fun. A little explanation on the riddle part would be nice for people who don't understand. Nice work.

I liked the part where I got to attack the darkness with magic missile. I also liked the sense of humor, although I didn't particularly enjoy being eaten by a grue. Oh well.

Got through it in one shot. Although the replayability isn't that high and it is a bit linear, I love how you wrote it and it made me feel like I was reading some stories that I wrote when I was younger. It was a great read with lots of creativity. Well done.

Made me think of going and playing some zork games again. With death on every wrong choice though, I admit to using the infamous 'Go Back' button now and then :)
