We're all gamers, right? But who among us is the true VARIETY gamer? Please, check mark a box if you have played one game in the titular series and gotten through at least 30% of it! Dabbling and demos DO NOT COUNT.

:

As you can see, with my score of 16/100 I don't even come close to top score. Perhaps one of us here is THE TRUE VARIETY GAMER and hits all 100 boxes? Respond below! :)

I got 12.

However I will not check your little boxes.

In hindsight, I don't really play much other than shooters, RPGs, and CYOAs.

Surprised I only got 6 though, always figured I played a good variety.

Are you even a real variety gamer if you don't also play board games, card games, and role-playing games?

Variety Video Game Checklist

I do wonder who actually made this list, some of the games are very old which is nice, but there's also whole genres missing.

Variety Video Game Checklist

1. Mario Bros - Yeah played the originals and some of the sequels. Never was very good at them though.

2. Warcraft - I played the second game in the series and the expansion enough to count. (And to know the RTS genre isn’t my favorite)

3. The Elder Scrolls - Yeah played enough of these in the series.

4. Fallout - Played the hell out of all of them along with beat them all.

5. Doom - Played and beat the 3 original games that came out in the 90s. Counts.

6. Donkey Kong - I played the first three arcade games in the series. Again, wasn’t really good at any of them though.

7. Tekken - Eh, I played enough of some of these games in the arcades to count.

8. Borderlands- Beat the first two games

9. The Sims - Played all of them to some degree

10. Fable - Beat all 3 of them though that’s not difficult to do

11. Contra - Never got too far in the arcades with this one, but enough quarters were dumped into it that I’m counting it.

12. Punch-Out - Played the 2 arcade games more than a few times. Played the console one much less, but it’s all enough to count.

13. Saints Row - Beat the first 4 in the series. Second game was the best of the bunch.

14. Warhammer - Well this is sort of broad, but I’ll say yeah since I’ve definitely played more than a few games based in the warhammer world (and 40K)

15. God of War - Beat the first one, played a lot of the second one. Counting it.

16. Tetris - Of course

17. Red Dead Redemption - Beat the first one.

18. Age of Empires - Played the first game in the series. Enough that it once again confirmed that I hate the RTS genre.

19. Prince of Persia - Beat the original game. Played the second which is hard as hell.

20. Ninja Gaiden - Beat the arcade game. Also played one of the console ones which was pretty cool.

21. Deus Ex - Beat the original and Human Revolution

22. GTA - Played all of them in the series save for the “Stories” spinoffs. Bothered to beat half of them.

23. Diablo - Beat the first two games.

24. Assassin’s Creed - Beat the first game. Played the second and lost all interest in the series.

25. Bioshock - Beat all three in the series.

26. Mass Effect - Beat the trilogy

27. Last of Us - Beat the first game.

28. Far Cry - Oddly I only ever played Primal in this series. Beat it. Counts.

29. Resident Evil - Beat the original second game in the series. Tried to play a few others in the series and for whatever reason just never could get into them.

30. Castlevania - Played an arcade version called Haunted Castle more than a few times. Also beat one of the later games in the series.

31. Soul Calibur - Played the first one in the arcades a few times. Played some others (particularly 4) on the consoles.

32. Mortal Kombat - Yeah played the first 3 games quite a bit in the arcades. Never was very good at them.

33. Uncharted - Beat the first 3 games.

34. Sonic the Hedgehog - Really tried to play this one and some of the other 2D sequels multiple times on those Sega Collections. Never was very good at it, but it counts.

35. The Witcher - Beat the second and third game

36. Half-Life - Beat the first game and one of the expansion packs.

37. Dark Souls - Another series I tried to get into multiple times. At some point I played all three games including Demon Souls, and never could get very far in any of them before losing interest. Counting it.

38. Silent Hill - Weirdly only ever played (and beat) the Shattered Memories one for the Wii. Counting it.

39. Dragon Age - Beat the first 2 games.

40. Gears of War - Beat the first 2 games.

41. Dishonored - Beat the first one.

I’m pretty sure I dabbled in a few of the above, Crash Banditcoot and Spyro specifically come to mind playing them enough to beat a couple levels when I was playing on someone else’s console.

So I'm counting all of those as “1” making it 42.

Also this list is for filthy casuals. I could probably rattle off a shitload of obscure games from various genres I played on the C64/Amiga (and Arcades) that maybe only some of the other BOOMERS here might have heard of.

Right?? This list sucks. I don't even see Nethack or Zork!

Where is Myst?!

(But seriously, at the very least the Monkey Island series should've made the cut given the age of some of the others.)

Variety Video Game Checklist

Had to add a couple more to the list that I played.

Yeah the point and click adventure genre is missing. Turn based strategy isn't really there either. Where the hell is Civilization or Heroes of Might and Magic? XCom?

Variety Video Game Checklist

No city builders, no Oregon Trail.

But it has Punch-Out. Punch-Out.

I feel like it's got to be easy to put together a less haphhazard list. One that goes by genre and not individual titles would probably be a better indicator of variety anyway. (Visual novels and Danganronpa seem conspicuously absent on any list brought to us by Suranna as well.)

Variety Video Game Checklist

Alas, I did not make the list. This was the best one I could find, and one of the longest. Mine definitely would've had Danganronpa 😅 Or Inscyption!

persona not mentioned :( Not that I'd expect End to spend over 100 hours on a weeb game. Seeing as FF is also missing from the list, I assume JRPG's aren't his thing. As far as Dark Souls goes, maybe you'd like Bloodborune more. It is Playstation exclusive, which is extremely maddening. DS1 is amazing, but it's a little hard to get into, lack of direction and all. Pretty easy to get to places you shouldn't go and not know where the hell you're supposed to be. I also don't think the series is good from an RPG standpoint, the inventory and items and weapons and weapon upgrades and stat system are all ass imo.

Variety Video Game Checklist

Diablo III, iirc

We used to have a family PC, and my dad had Diablo downloaded on it. My mom was very against it, saying I could easily access it and that would be the end of the world. I promised not to, but he definitely could tell I played it and never snitched. Props to him for that.

Variety Video Game Checklist

But Christians SHOULD be killing demons.

Good thing it wasn't Diablo 1. That had a way more of an oppressive dark fantasy or "satanic" feel than the later ones.

Variety Video Game Checklist

My dad basically beat the game then let me mess around in Adventure mode collecting bounties and such. I realized it let me choose the outfit for the character from the gear he'd amassed and design the teleportation banner and I was hooked. I started my own little save but soon discovered it wasn't as fun for my 11/12 year old self without everything already completed, so never actually finished it. The amount I did play was purely motivated by doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing.

Variety Video Game Checklist

One of my fondest memories I have with my dad is him letting me stay up until midnight for the release of Diablo 3. Then the servers went down and we couldn't play it that night. Had a lot of fun playing it with him afterwards though.

I probably should, I do own the second one, and there's really no reason not to own the first when it's constantly going on 90% sales.

Variety Video Game Checklist

Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Tekken, Fable, Contra, Guilty Gear, Nier, God of War, Tetris, Red dead redemption, Street Fighter, Need for Speed, Prince of Persia, GTA, Rayman, Mortal Kombat, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, The Witcher, Devil May Cry, Hitman, Bomberman.

So a total of 22/100. I'd say that's a healthy amount. I didn't see any roguelikes on this list though. At least, not any ones that I know. Also, the fact that I've beaten Bloodborne and Elden Ring and can't check off Dark Souls because they aren't technically the same franchise irks me to no end.

Variety Video Game Checklist

Just realized I missed at least 3-4 other games that should have been checked. Out of all the ones on here Command and Conquer is the only one that I still play with any regularity (just recently restarted a campaign on Red Alert). I really like Final Fantasy at when it came out and Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of my favorite squad isometrics. Contra just has a lot of really strong nostalgia for me. Fallout is one of the best RPGs, although the first one is certainly one of the weakest in the series. This list is an interesting selection, although I'm with a lot of the others about the surprising abscense of many titles.

The ones I missed were Starcraft, Warhammer (40k), Command and Conquer, and Parasite Eve.

To be fair the only reason I haven't played a lot of these is the lack of a machine to run them.

What would be your most-played?

Variety Video Game Checklist

Contenders for that position

Mario Bros: Mostly for many completions of Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3

Legend of Zelda: Played most of the titles, and finished most of those

Fallout: New Vegas, ring-a-ding-ding baby

Team Fortress: "That spy is not OUR spy!"

Age of Empires: 2 is the best one, no contest

Halo: 2 is the best story, 3 is the best couch multiplayer, anything from 4 on is weird/bad/incomplete

Dark Souls: Dark Souls 1 is the Dark Souls of the franchise next to Demon Souls, which is the King's Field of Dark Souls

Variety Video Game Checklist

1) Mario Bros

2) Legend of Zelda

3) pokemon

4) The Sims

3) Animal Crossing

7) Mortal Kombat

8) Sonic the Headegog

Variety Video Game Checklist

  1. StarCraft (Only SC 2, but I played a lot of it)
  2. Tetris
  3. Street fighter
  4. Age of Empires (Number Five, if I remember correctly)
  5. Portal (all of both games)
  6. Worms (Reloaded)

All in all, that's 6/100

I have played a lot more that are not on here, and feel like it could have more games listed. (ie. Minecraft, minesweeper, Terraria, Deliver us Mars, and more.)

Variety Video Game Checklist

Now that you've mentioned it, Minecraft not being on here is a bit surprising.

Not that I ever got into that game either. Liked Terraria better.

Variety Video Game Checklist

There's also a ton of games from other genres I played a lot that aren't there. For example I have almost exactly 800 hours in E:D though I don't play it anymore, and I've sank over a decade and a grand in USD into League, but I quit that too.

Variety Video Game Checklist

What the fuck did you need 500 skins for

Variety Video Game Checklist

Considering that I only really played maybe half a dozen champions at a competitive level I probably didn't, but the game did provide me with literally thousands of hours of fun from when I was a broke ass high schooler playing on a laptop in his dorm using mobile internet until I ended up pretty much where I am now so once I had money I just figured I should pay it back in some way. About a third of that money was spent on gifts for others anyway.

Variety Video Game Checklist

Guess I'm just too Dutch for that reasoning.

Variety Video Game Checklist

If you could consider a game that provides you with 30 hours of fun worth it at 60$ is it really that far of a stretch to consider 500 not unreasonable for 3000+ hours?

That's a really dumb way of thinking about it. You wouldn't buy the same (board)game twice, thrice or more if you kept enjoying your first copy either, just to give back to the developers. At least, I wouldn't.
