This was really a lot of fun. I really liked the lighthearted tone of the entire story, and the whole story was just fun. The first few times through I picked the obviously wrong answers and was pleasantly surprised at the different places I could go and the different turns that the story took. I even married a queen, and me nothing but a simple huntsman!

I liked how the text actually gave some hints and ideas as well, as to which option might be the better option in some cases – it wasn’t just guessing and selecting random links. I also liked that the bows has limited used and did different things when used in different places. I managed to get a chipmunk, poison ivy, and dead. It really was a lot of fun, even if I never did actually catch that darn firebird! Thank you for sharing this story with the site!

This was quite enjoyable. The story flowed quite well, and the humor was genuinely funny and well written. While this was short, the choices were done rather well and made this storygame quite enjoyable to play through more than once.

This story legitimately made me laugh. I didn't even realize until I read this how much I missed this kind of wry satire when the vast majority of humor on this site falls into the category of random stupidity, which is far easier to write.

This story was grammar and spelling perfect with a very minimalist style of storytelling that kept the plot moving always at a brisk pace. I enjoyed going back and finding all of the paths our bedraggled Royal Hunter could walk. To be honest, when I first selected to choice to turn down the quest, I was 90% certain that it would send me to a dead end where I had to either restart or hit the back button, but to my surprise, the story went on! I was very impressed how almost every individual path feels like a self-contained story with the same overarching sense of dry humor that makes the read so enjoyable.

Normally, for games that are only 3/8 in length, I find them too short to be enjoyable and reduce the rating I give them accordingly. However, I found this game to be just the right length with no need for extension - it was a little bright spot in my afternoon and put a smile on my face and a craving for KFC in my stomach.

This story is a lot of fun!

This is a good example of how a short (even very short - 1500 words) storygame can really be good. It is a simple plot, go get the King a firebird for lunch, but it is carried out well. The writing was well done, and the story was light and humorous.

I really enjoyed the variety of branches available. And I especially liked that the one on the first page, "I quit", created an additional narrative with a queen, instead of a typical end game link.

Forgot to add two things in my last review:

I like the fact that choosing the obviously "wrong" path still leads you somewhere. Many storygames just try to funnel you to a certain path. There's nothing wrong with that, and in fact sometimes that leads to a better story, but going the other way has its merit as well.

The other thing I forgot to add is the hilarity of shooting your bow when there is nothing to shoot. Instead of "You can't use that item here," you get to be made to feel like a jackass with the message of something like "you fire your bow at nothing, idiot." A nice touch.

Anyway, if I could edit a review I'd append this to my previous one. Oh well.

Goddammit I hate firebirds. Well, this story was pretty humorous. If you're looking for some epic fantasy tale, this isn't for you. It's short on visual description or drama, but it has a lot of slap stick humor.

It has an anachronistic vibe to it. On one branch, you can quit your job as huntsman, and then go to a job interview for a new position. You'll fill out an application, and then answer questions, but of course you will have the opportunity to give wonderfully Mad Hatter like answers.

It's rather nutty, but it's not completely bonkers. There is a bit of sense in it, as some of the text kind of guides you along, rather than just giving you completely batshit random links to follow.

This kind of story obviously doesn't have a whole lot of in depth background, or emotional pull. Part of me feels an urge to punish a story for that, because I feel it takes much more work to flesh out characters and settings in a way that doesn't rely on the scaffolding of whimsicality (which affords the author the ability to make up rules to their universe without much careful thought), but on the other hand, every once in a while you need a mindless story that just makes you laugh.

And ultimately, that's what this thing is. The humor took some thought, so don't get me wrong. But you're not going to find any deep answers to the meaning of life here (unless the answer is that there is no meaning...). You'll find some shallow humor, some exaggerated characters, some hilarious cliches, but also a little bit of order and sense.


You say, don't read this story looking for something deeper. You're not going to find it. Then again, you just might find something better: a firebird.

Very unique and humorous story that got me involved.
I loved the multiple endings and the many different ways to play the story. I wish there were more games like this one!

Short, humorous, entertaining, but light

Well, I did enjoy the humor in this and the writing did a good job of capturing my attention. While it wasn't the longest story i've read, it was certainly enough to keep me entertained for a while.

I loved the character development, such as the king being greedy, the firebird being cautious, etc. Some of the situations seemed rather illogical, but I still liked the storygame a lot.

I enjoyed myself enough to play multiple times and find all the endings, and I was very glad there was plenty of branching in this storygame. It was a nice alternative to another one of those games with zero branching.

The plot, i'll admit, I did not have high hopes for. But you managed to flesh it out quite well and you really painted a picture for me, despite there not being a lot of detail.

I did notice a lack of emotion in this story, but I don't think that was needed for a storygame like this one.

I really enjoyed myself, but there's room for improvement. 6/8.

I loved this story-- I became king!?? Joking aside, it was a very good five minutes exploring all the endings.

Maybe one of the best things in this story for me was that poor choices were

a) obviously bad choices (like quitting)
b) did not lead to immediate death but continued on with a few more choices and a bit more story before the end game link.

More people should do what you do. Its a simple game, and rather short, but very enjoyable and well done.

Entertaining! A bit short, yes, but it doesn't really need to be any longer. Some part of me wonders why a Slavic folktale's animal is in a land where you're named William, but it's a mythical creature--it can go where it wants, right? Lots of fun, good work!

This game brought me enlightment. I enjoyed it very much, and a funny ending to. The writing was really good, maybe one of these days (read years) I'll be able to write better...without using the screenplay version of text.
