General notes:
This is an excellent game on just about every level. The plot is enticing and the concept is original, the characters are all compelling and well-developed, and the game mechanics are excellently coded with virtually no bugs and they work to add to the game’s overall narrative rather than distracting from it. This is one of the few games on the site that has truly mastered balancing story and game elements in a way that make each of them stronger.
Playing as a quasi-reformed cop killer is an intriguing idea, particularly in the CYOA format. We have a character whose life can very easily spiral in a wide variety of directions, perfect for the format. He exists in a state of flux, simultaneously holding onto his past and trying to escape it, with the decisions the player makes bringing him closer to or further from this goal. The player’s final choice seals this decision, but the duality is clear in every moment of gameplay. Storygames work most powerfully when they hinge thematically on a few key character-based conflicts. This game hinges on the narrator’s struggle to leave behind his murderous ways.
Yet this inner conflict blends seamlessly with the action-based problems and dilemmas the narrator faces. It’s all-too-tempting in a game with scripting to focus on the puzzle-y aspects at the expense of the narrative, but this game does not fall into that trip. Every bit of text, right down to the item descriptions, are dripping with character and weight. The “plot-driving” scenes are written well and do not feel seperate from the rest of the game.
The narrator's characterization blends well with the player's agency. Though it's clear the narrator has a strong and well-developed personality of his own, I never felt like he was infringing on my actions or taking over the story. In many games (particularly more narrative-based ones) you have to slide and adjust yourself in order to work with a protagonist who is different than you, but no matter what strategy I took in this game, I felt like I was working with the narrator rather than against him.
This game is most impressive for the wide variety of ways in which it takes full advantage of the CYOA format. The protagonist is a unique and compelling character who couldn’t exist in the same way as a static one, and the puzzles build towards telling a story that could never be conveyed in a linear format. It’s a testament to the versetility and strength of the format, and an incredibly complex and impressive game.

Specific notes:
-On my first playthrough, I’m putting most of my points in Endurance (60, Luck and Intellect are both 20), and selecting the traits Bruiser, Sixth Sense, Street Smart, and Weaponmaster. My experience with RPGs is that an intelligence-based build is best done on a replay when one is already familiar with the game, so I’ll save that for then and focus on strength for now.
-The background doesn’t waste time, and gets straight to the point. Though a little abrupt, I do appreciate the emphasis on action and not focusing on unimportant details, I think that’s more important than a smooth transition.
-Good characterizing and tone-setting opening scene. We start with the narrator in his raw and untamed form, and then he walks us through putting his civilized mask on in his morning routine.
-Room descriptions set the mood well without being overly descriptive and keeping the focus on the action.
-Oho someone’s getting stabbed with that pen aren’t they.
-I weirdly like the detail of the lime green coloration.
-Had to google what a 2005 Scion Xa was. In general, I recommend just describing vehicles in addition to or in replacement of listing their brand, non-car-savvy readers get pulled out of the story otherwise.
-Though I am tempted to throw the pizza in the dumpster, I will hold onto it for now as I suspect it holds the key to victory in this game.
-I like the way item descriptions add to the narrative rather than being simply functional.
-The flashback to the cop killing is integrated smoothly with the narrative.
-The fourth wall break is intriguing here.
-If the decisions surrounding the patients on your rounds turn out to be important, some informational links might be helpful. As someone who’s not actually a medical professional, I’m mostly just guessing what the best way to treat these people is. EDIT: Found the links on the phone, never mind!
-I like the way the confrontation at the end is set up, and though I’ve only played through it once so far (by unsuccessfully attempting to drug the god), I suspect it can be resolved in many different ways with a lot of flexibility.
-First playthrough: Score of 734, “I Try My Best”. Analysis: Based on how I approached gameplay, I should have maxxed my intelligence stats instead of going for strength. None of my abilities were of any use to me. I’m going to try again with different stats and the same strategy and see if it makes a difference. EDIT: No effect.
-Yikes, no endgame link? Boo! Generally it’s pretty poor form not to include an endgame link once gameplay is over. EDIT: Not so bad since dying gives you an endgame link, judgement rescinded. It would still be nice if the “you tried” ending had one, though.
-Being able to lie about having the cop’s gun is an amusing option.
-I like that getting arrested is actually necessary in order to beat the game. The mop puzzles with the cubicles is well done.

Grammar
All good!

Mastery of Language
The language shifts between matter of fact and poetic. This is mostly done in a smooth and impressive manner, the only place it felt out of place was in the very first background page.

Mechanics & Coding
Easily one of the best uses of the advanced editor on this site. There’s using the advanced editor and then there’s using it well; anyone can make an item-and-stat-based puzzle game, but not everyone can make an item-and-stat-based puzzle game with narratively satisfying puzzles that actually serve towards building the story rather than simply providing obligatory obstacles for the player to overcome. The context surrounding the acquisition of each of the symbols is not just a sequence of random events, each is linked to an important part of the narrator’s personality, and it’s clear why each action is necessary for the game’s true end.
The use of the symbols to unlock the game’s true ending works well. Once the player has found one symbol they’ll be aware there are others, and having them be items rather than invisible variables makes the player’s progress clear and tangible.
Simultaenously, the puzzles do not block the player from continuing. If you can’t solve the symbol puzzles you’re not at a deadlock, you just don’t unlock the true ending. People can play through this game casually without the frustration of hitting a wall, then return to explore it in more depth.

Branching
This is a linear gauntlet style game (assuming I didn’t miss any major branches), but the excellent use of scripting and items prevents this from being a drawback for choice-seeking players.

Player Options/fair choice
Of the options actually presented, the outcomes are fair and predictable, but what options are presented are heavily dependent on the player’s stats. If the player chooses wisely at the beginning of the game, they’ll be pleased with the options presented, if not, they may feel limited to certain choices.

Nitpicks:
Did throwing the pizza in the dumpster actually do anything or was that just a bit of flavor?

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
After playing through multiple times and getting help from a forum thread to find symbol #1 (found the other 3 on my own), I’ve reached the "best" ending, “Angelic Destroyer” with 0 psychosis, 0 psychedelics, and 100 sobriety. Huzzah!
Clearly the best way to play is to max out luck and forget about everything else.
Though I’m certain I’ve by no means explored everything in this game, I think I’ve found most of the mainstream secrets and paths, and this satisfies me for now. I may return later to ensure I haven’t missed anything big.

CONCLUSION: A well-earned 8/8.

MCIGOAKT (That works as an acronym, right?) I feel that this is something that is a classic on this site. The reader is introduced to stats and even traits that can compliment those stats that already lets one know that the story is one that can be experienced in a variety of ways. The writing is both gritty and realistic, but it keeps you enamored. The main character is both a flawed individual, and he can be a blank slate enough that you can fill his shoes in ways. However, he does have his own personality, motivations, faults, those he might love and regard in different ways, and we are only influencing a part of his life at a major turn.

You can feel the plight of someone wanting to live some sort on normally, but constantly feeling the dark tug of their past vices that can still seep in into becoming and staying current vices. What i like about this story is that you don't have to play in a perfect manner, it rewards you for wanting to see and experience the different locations that are in this game. This game rewards proper use of items, and you might even have to think more on how to beat it than you might have initially thought.

At the end of the day this story-game is about a flawed man that can either become a better person at the end of it, or a worse one, or not anything as he fails at either. This story-game deserves its featured spot for being a remarkable marvel of how the advanced editor can lift up a story. Although other story-games might have come after all of the years that this game was released (2007) this story still remains a top tier story at the time of this writing. I don't think it's too farfetched to even say that this will remain a good story despite what point of time one might find themselves experiencing it. Stories that are engaging like this one I believe are timeless after all.

Really this is one that is better experienced than simply told about. Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight easily deserves your time if you are looking for a story to pass some enjoyable time with.

An old story but still one worth reading.

This was probably the first one I read when I first got here and I wasn’t disappointed by it. The use of the stats and items in the story are done well. The writing of course is good. Lots of different choices available and paths to take. It’s definitely expansive in that regard.

The main problems were sometimes the items were a little glitchy and I got caught in a “loop” but that’s a common problem with the item function on here. The “restart links” found in some portions of the story rather than proper ending links are annoying.

In any case it still has stood the test of time and worth a play through. I’m still finding things I hadn’t before in it.

It’s good but REMEMBER to always get at least 30 intelligence.

One of the hardest games I have played if you ask me.
Now, I slowly had to find out how and what by myself, and trying to get the talisman was a struggle.

I can see that there are a lot of people struggling, so I'll just give a hint:
Why not try to kind and try to be creative?

Anyway, I really thought there would be a difference in the ending when you get the talisman, but well, nope.
Still, a good game that makes you replay it a few times until you figure it out.

Saw this on the Jenna and Julien Podcast and decided to give it a shot, I did way worse than them for sure but still had a lot of fun.

I played this years ago and recently found it again due to the Jenna Julien Podcast. I finally completed all the endings!! So exciting!! This story is so interesting, I really enjoyed it.

Really innovative. Thought it had a great storyline.

I would say this plays a little bit like a mystery. The object appears to be to solve the clues in order to assemble the Talisman / arrive at a 'successful' ending. As far as I can tell, the character build doesn't impact your ability to do that. You can ignore the advice the creator gives to make sure your stats match your traits.

Specific character builds are only needed to open up side plots.

I think the first half of the storyline is great. A bunch of choices to go with, and a bunch of hidden parts and important choices that really affect the second half. In my opinion though, the second part was really forced and short in length. I may have gotten the best ending that's existing right now, but it doesn't feel like one, you know? The Talisman seems very useless, and I wish it would've had more involvement in the story. If more diverse endings exist, I think I would've liked it. Overall, I had fun. I loved the story, but I wished it had more content, as it felt rushed. I have noticed that other authors on this website do a lot better job at the endings, and I hope to find more improvement in future projects. I would rate the difficulty in excellence, because while the story is short, I loved the amount of attention to detail must be put in your decisions.

Excellent editing, the visuals were detailed even without pictures the images you portrayed through words gave me the sense that I was seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing, and touching things in person. Well done, you should be proud of yourself!

This book was fantastic! I really liked how I was backstabbed by my friend Leon! Jesus, I swear in my next life I'm going to put poison in his beer. Otherwise, I really liked this book and the plot line was kewl!

The Talisman was arbitrary and didn't change anything. The second half of the story was too forced, it should have changed with your earlier decisions like the first half. Also too short.

Overall it was very entertaining but a lot of potential was wasted.

Aww mannn, I know that I'm one of many who have already said this but this game is really a CYOA masterpiece. I mean, it's just the only thing I can say. My only problem would be the presumed uselessness of the talisman, I mean, have I just not discovered its use yet or what?

But otherwise, really great game here. I personally wish that we could have gotten to know Stacey better and to know the possible consequences of the last possible interaction between her and the protagonist,, but that's just me.

This game just keeps getting better.

Well done overall, but falls short of its potential. Several problems: the path of the story seems circumscribed, there was no real decision on weapon usage and tactics (thus not much of a game portion), some traits were a LOT more useful than others etc. Overall it was still a very good story.

However, two real big problems exist, that stop me from giving an 8/8. They are (1) the uselessness of the amulet, and (2) the fact that making rational decisions does not result in a normal/realistic "boring" ending.

It was okay, but I was honestly expecting more.

I got Premature Death, and really don't want to go back and redo the story. (Sorry). But hey, I did like the game!

It's pretty good, just too short! Also, I didn't really use some of my skills at all, and it went just fine, but as for other skills, I had to depend on them...a lot. Maybe it should be more balanced? Oh well, that's not my main concern. It really should be longer though.

I cannot for the life of me find out how to get the talisman. I can tell the dwarf has it, but I don't know what he wants from me. I've tried multiple different things and the furthest I can get is killing or sparing Leon.

This was hard, and really interesting, but there are bugs when the policeman searches you, and the talisman was rather pointless.

What an absolutely bizzare game. Great humor, nice puzzle-elements, and just insane overall. The end-scene felt a bit rushed, but the final pages felt very rewarding anyway.
Really glad that I read this over again. Additionally, the website really does put forth an interesting light about the mysterious talisman(s). I wonder if you're ever going to write another story relating to them, since you seem to have several write-ups on them already.
Regardless of association, I hope you write more story-games, since this was a lot of fun.

I thought it was interesting. the background story was superb and the plotline decent. However I thought the characters were lackluster, the swearing overused,and the cops unrealistic. No cop is gonna arrest you for swearing at him or my dad would have been arrested long ago. Overall score 7/8. This is probably only my fourth favorite game on the site. Sorry but that's my opinion and I'm not gonna change it.

I have noticed a fandom to which I cannot be a part of due to my inability to get anything other than the worst ending. I don't see, what be be obvious to others, signs of improvement. I just don't. So I suppose I am stuck with my 538 score until I figure out how to not be killed in Serge's house, or at least not have to deal with Leon.

Took me forever (5 run-throughs or so) to find the first talisman...shame on me for overlooking it so many times. Got 1000 on the first try though, just by doing what made the most sense...

It is creative but much shorter than I would have liked. It's only long because you have to fund the Talisman which is a 3 piece amulet and you get it through being creative in the world. it was a letdown for me.

Playing through this storygame on lunch during a very stressful day at work provided the same sort of relief one gets from running down the streets of a popular series of games with a baseball bat. Only this is so much more personal and dark. Bravo! So well written!

I thought the story was very well-written (I expected a parade of typos, haha) and interesting. I still haven't been able to end it on a good note, though. So far I keep getting killed and it's pissing me off! Not the creator's fault though, obviously.

It took me about twenty tries, but I got the "best ending." I hadn't thought of hitting somebody in the head with a cell phone.

My page screwed itself at a crucial moment and I thought I'd pay for it. Then I got the best ending. All in all, a great story.

Marvellous, beautiful. What I'd like to see is a walkthrough or thorough FAQ to this - I'm wondering what the items I didn't use may good for and what other ways there are to take but don't find the time to go through this 50 times trying out every last possibility.

I found it to be a very phenomenal story, I was very supervised and engaged by how such minor decisions like drinking beer and downing pills would have such an impact on the story. Loved it. 8/8

Really great Storygame. It had a great story and game mechanics.

Great game. I got the merciless killer ending. The only problem I had was that sometimes there weren't very many options, but I found the story so gripping that it didn't matter much.

Wow. I'm sorry I waited so long to play this game (didn't think it would be a good idea to play at work) because it's really impressive and complex. Love the statistics and the use of the character sheet to track them and your accomplishments; it's a big turn-off when I start a game and discover I have to keep track of a lot of stats by hand.

Also liked that the correct choices are NOT random; they make a lot of intuitive sense and aren't left up to chance like picking which door leads to the exit and which leads to instant death.

Of course, now I'm going back and going to make horrible choices to see the bad endings... Great work!

I have no clue how long just the small part of the story that I finished took to make, but I'd still like to see a longer version. It is an excellent, well thought out story in my opinion. Keep up the great work!

Excellent. Good character development, the story requires some thought to beat, and in general awesome. It seems a little short, but that's mostly because it is that good that I didn't want it to end.

I understand now why so many people claim this to be the greatest story on the site. There were a few typo errors (like using the word either when you meant neither ("either am I") and such). There were a few parts where the freedom of the story was rather limited and streamlined, but otherwise this was an excellent story and an excellent read.

The writing is riveting (well done!) and the game play is very transparent. An impressive feat, especially considering how open-ended the storygame is. I'm going to run through again later (if only I didn't have to go to work now).

Good writing, Good Story, I'm not sure if I liked the vulgar shock factor but I admit it was graphic enough to put me in the story. I was confused at one point but it's a plot spoiler so I'll ask later. I need t play again.

wow, what an emotional rush! that was great. there were a few grammatical errors. but very minimal. the complexity, the involvement, the whole thing was engaging. the best part of this story is the detail that you put into the character sheet. that was brilliant.

This was extremely entertaining several times through. The descriptive writing painted the story so thoroughly I felt as if I was watching an interactive movie. When I thought I could predict the next catastrophe, a vivid spin kept me intrigued. Well done! Waiting for the next eloquent piece of chaos and mayhem. Strong!

A great story.

Even though I couldn't find the correct ending, I still managed to have a good time with this. The storyline, and characters, everything. They are all done so well. I can't believe how well this story was done. It takes in so many mathematical formulas and creative writing traits, that if he took an IQ test, he'd have 150 or something like that. This has to be the best piece of work I've ever seen for choosing your own fate.

This was really well written! I thought the character sheet was a great story-game feature, and there was really good useage of items, character traits and stats. I really liked the little extra touches in descriptions, like russian text when someone spoke to me in russian! Madglee's BFA in Creative Writing shows. Definitely a maturity level of 7 though, kids.

That was very interesting. I like the fact that it's so open-ended. I just finished as an "Angelic Destroyer," but now I'm going back to the other window I have open, where I'm currently doing every bad choice I can think of.

Haha i got the worst ending, i guess that what happens sticking to as much morals in the story as possible :P lol. This game is amazing and i would rate it number 1 on this site. The language is amazing! the plot is intriguing! have you considered becoming an author for real novels? Im sure you have based on what ive read! I will play it again and try to get the best ending!
