Welcome! If you enjoy deception, detective work or pretending to be a mod, this game is for you. Don’t worry, it’s not a forum game, just a game that takes place on the forums—an important distinction. 

Now that I’m a mod, there’s no better time than to run a social experiment about distinguishing real CYStians from trolls! This activity has slight similarities to Mafia/ Werewolf, as you’ll see below, but with a CYS twist. Feel free to play as yourself or assume a character, whichever you prefer.

Some notes: 

• The maximum number of slots is 11 (minimum is 9), but if you sign up late, I’ll put you on the waiting list for if anyone decides to drop out halfway
• There’ll be at least 24 hours for each choice to account for time-zone differences and irl happenings
• Throughout the game, feel free to discuss strategies, form alliances and completely lie about your role

Roles

Good Team
To win, you must eliminate all the trolls from the forums

                  

Bad Team
To win, you must eliminate either all the Mods or all the CYStians

      

Neutral Team
To win, survive long enough to take on a new role



All roles would be assigned via a random wheel generator.

Rules

The game is split into iterations of nights and days, which are repeated until one group wins. During the night, each member chooses a room to stay in.


 

• The number of seats/ beds represents the number of people who can be in a room each night
• News & Updates and the Lounge will be off-limits

Night

Troll attack: the trolls will vote to attack one user (every night) and the hacker troll will temporarily change one user’s IP address (every night).

Moderation: the contest mod will SHAME one person, who will be unable to use their abilities but cannot be killed (every night; optional), investigator mod will doxx one user and find out their alignment - good, bad, or neutral (every night) and chaos mod can purge an entire room of users (once per game).

Thunderdome (once per game): if the productive CYStian challenges a troll or Cogite, their opponent will be eliminated. If the productive CYStian challenges any other user, they will be eliminated instead.

Day

Gazette news (every morning): Information would be revealed about who—if anyone—was eliminated from the Forums. If there was a Thunderdome match, the identity of the eliminated loser will be revealed (the winner’s identity remains a secret). The user in the Pit of Shame can communicate with other members as normal but cannot vote

Revival (once per game): When someone has been eliminated at night, their skeleton will remain in Bugs & Problems throughout the following day and if the majority agrees, they can visit the Feature Wishing Well to resurrect them.

Voting: All members would take part in a discussion and cast votes. If most people decide not to vote, no one will be eliminated. If there is a tie, a revote would happen, but if it ties again, no one will be eliminated.

I think this sounds like fun...but also extremely confusing. I don't think I've really played this kind of game before.

So, you're publicly stating your lack of experience so that others would underestimate you and you can strike when they least expect it? You're more than ready for this game.

Oh, I completely forgot to mention that this would start in a week at earliest, as I'm currently in the midst of travel preparations. Sign ups will last until then.

The coder cystian chooses a room to protect, which may be different from the room they are in. They protect everyone in that room but die on behalf of whoever is murdered. This opens up a few strategies, including protecting the room with the most people, protecting the room with someone whose role is revealed because they are more powerful (and confirming they did this using their last words), or maybe even choosing an empty room to protect if they are not feeling self-sacrificial.

I would like to join if the list isn't alredy full! But I have 2 questions, first, how will we know who is in which forum ( a.k.a room ). Secondly ( it may sound dumb ), if someone like the chaotic mod wants to eliminate people in a room, is it randomly picked or do they chose?

I'll start by inviting everyone to publicly post which room they will be in. If it becomes a problem, ie. people changing their room because someone else enters, then I'll implement private messages for this. As for the second question, the chaotic mod chooses which room they want to eliminate. This can be used if they strongly suspect a room is full of trolls and/or indispensable members.

Well, I definitely didn't expect so many sign ups in the last few hours! Some of you may have to be a bit clearer about whether you intend to join or have just commented on the thread. Depending on my commitments next week, and provided there is enough interest, I'm considering the possibility of running two games.

Thanks for the offer, but RK has already asked to run the second game, so he'll be handling that. Maybe if there is enough interest for a third game/ if you want to run this in the future, we could arrange that :)

Yes. When I first made it, about 5 other variations were already taken, but not the one I use to this day.

Smh some people had Fortnite when they were seven. It didn’t even come out until I was eleven!

I actually played it when it first came out, lol. It's definitely changed a lot since then, but I still don't like it too much.

I can join and don't mind being put on a wait list to take over when someone goes inactive. I can't play until next week anyway...

This is perhaps a dumb question, but does any italics anywhere break the front page? Italics can be avoided, but im curious now.

I did not realise. I will stop using itallics and start using something else to indicate speech from a cat who doesn't have a human mouth.

Also...I have been roleplaying for a LONG time, and autohitting makes me twitch. Please don't do it.

(I don't know about game two, but I've seen at least one instance in game one, and...it is not good roleplay etiquette).

Writing something happening to another person's character. (In this case, vaccuming up another person's character).

what's wrong with it? I understand not saying what another person did but what's wrong with saying you vacumed someone up (if it's possible to vacum them)

You didn't give the other player a chance to stop it. You literally just wrote something happening to the other player's character. In effect, you are still saying what the other person did - you're saying they were unable to stop it, and were essentially trapped until you decided they could get out.

This is an example for a fight scene, but the idea is still the same:

'Auto-hitting is where you make your character literally strike another character without the other player's permission and/or without allowing a way for them to avoid it if they choose.

Auto-hit example: "Steve punched Shaun in the face."

Correct form: "Steve swung his fist at Shaun's face."

The latter example allows the other player to either;

Take the hit: "Shaun stumbled back, clutching a bloody nose."

Or dodge: "Shaun ducked and Steve's punch passed harmlessly over his head."

Characters are usually allowed to fight each other, but the attacking character is never allowed to hit another character without the controlling player's permission. You can use phrases like "shot at", "tried to hit", "aimed for" and so on, which gives the defending player the option of whether or not they want to allow their character to be hit. Auto-hitting is ignoring that courtesy and inflicting damage without giving the defending character/player the option to evade it.'

I think that might be a better way of explaining it, but in effect, when roleplaying, you have control over your character(s) and ONLY yours.

This. While I appreciate the reminder to not auto hit (it's not fun to lose control of your character in a story) and only state things that your character is doing... this was a lot of notifications for essentially a private conversation. I'd like to be able to check my game and forum posts without reading a private argument. I won't add to the problem further by continuing to write responses.

It was actually freestyle roleplaying, which is why I'm so conscious of things like autohitting. With D&D (which is roleplaying, even if in a different format, V), you obviously know if a hit lands or not due to dice rolls.

And, yes, I am a 'she'.

I'd like to give it a shot. I really like these kinds of games, and playing my disturbed character who really needs to get a therapist. Am I disturbed? Maybe, I write a lot of bloody things and those started ever since some traumatic experiences. I feel fine.

A few clarifications on things that came up in questions:
 

1. Unless stated otherwise, most abilities are not room-dependent. That means the Trolls can kill those in a different room from them, the Contest Mod can shame someone in a different room, Productive CYStian can challenge someone in another room, etc. (The only exception is that the Triggered Troll attack would affect someone in the same room and the Productive CYStian has to issue a Thunderdome challenge from one of the specified locations)
2. All Mods and CYStians have a 'good' alignment, all Trolls have a 'bad' alignment, and the Cog Refugee has a 'neutral' alignment until they take on a new role. The Investigator Mod would find out whether an alignment is good, neutral or bad, but not the role or classification. Same with the Hacker Troll, who changes the alignment of a player and not the role (and it's temporary). However, the Cog Refugee's guess has to be a bit more specific, as to the classification of the member, i.e. Mod, CYStian or Troll.
3. Anyone can be revived at the well, regardless of whether they were voted out, killed, perished in a Triggered Troll attack, died protecting a room as a Coder CYStian, etc. Just note that the ability can only be used once.
4. The only people who know one anothers' roles are the trolls. Everyone else is in the dark.
5. You may reveal your roles if you choose to, but bear in mind that some players may lie about their roles to either bait out the true role so they can kill then, or make a high-level play to protect you and themself by tricking the trolls.
6. Quick reminder on roleplaying: as stated earlier in this thread, avoid excessive use of italics for the sake of our front page, and where possible, opt for editing a previous message instead of sending many super short ones.
7. The Coder CYStian's protection over a room occurs no matter what happens within, so even in the case of a Triggered Troll attack, both the troll and their victim(s) would survive in lieu of the Coder if that room were to be protected.
8. It is assumed that the trolls kill last, so if any other member has performed an action, this action would still be carried out the night they are killed. The Contest Mod shaming someone happens first since it bars any other role from using their ability. 
9. In the event of a tie, there will be a revote, and if the votes are tied again, nothing will happen (ie no one gets voted out or revived).
10. The trolls can choose how they want to kill their victims.
11. If the Contest Mod is killed, their victim would still remain trapped in the Pit of Shame until the following night.

Oh, the trolls can bypass the locked doors thing? I feel like that leaves no way to actually stragecially find out a players alignment. This game got a lot harder for those who are of good allignment.

The most effective ways to uncover trolls would be through the investigator mod and thunderdome challenges, imo. There is statistically a very low chance that the investigator mod chooses to examine a person whose identity the hacker troll changes. And the inverse of only letting trolls kill people in their own room would just expose them immediately or narrow down the list to 2 people given how spread out everyone seems to be across rooms.

This keeps coming up... can you vote for no one? We were told we had to vote, but that doesn't seem to actually be a rule... and now people are not voting

In our game, the first vote we were told we can't abstain because it would make the games take too long... and so we did vote off a random person. So, I'm asking to clarify. 

I discussed this with RK a few days ago and we decided that it is an option to not vote. Even from a purely organizational perspective, if no one votes, there's nothing we could do to force someone out the game save for using a random wheel spinner lol.
