Oh... THAT'S where the thread is about the typing game... I couldn't find it earlier.

I can't join, Nitro is blocked for me. Sorry, my mom can be paranoid when it comes to making sure I don't see, hear, read, or otherwise get exposed to things I shouldn't be.

And I don't have a problem with ogre, I have a problem with people filling a thread with how great he is.

At first I didn't understand why so many people like Ogre, but then one day as I was going to a history lecture I saw a burning building. People started to gather and there was no emergency rescue in sight. Then out of nowhere Ogre pushed past the crowd and ran into the building. A few minutes later he came out with a full litter of kittens in his arms. Without pause he put the kittens in a safe spot and then ran back in as the roof started to collapse. I honestly thought he was dead as I couldn't see him in the smoke, but then suddenly Ogre leapt out of the second story window and landed right in front of us. Two old ladies on his shoulders. When the firefighters finally arrived he was done performing CPR on the one that was still unresponsive. As they took over the rescue efforts I lost sight of him.

At that point I decided to not loiter any more and continued to my lecture, the incredible scene still stuck in my mind as I started to get the whole Ogre thing. Even as I sat down in the lecture hall regaining focus was a struggle. That's when Ogre walked in, his shirt still charred in places, and without even acknowledging that he was in fact a minute late began his presentation about the wild west and exploits of a notorious Mercer Gang.

That day really changed how I look at Ogre.

I like Ogre.

He probably at one point saw Ogre perform a different heroic act. I wouldn't be surprised considering it's Ogre.

Looking at the thread, I don't think anyone else is giving Avo an actual explanation for why everyone is saying "I like Ogre", so I'll do it.

Avo, this forum has existed for over 20 years, and Internet forum culture tends to include a lot of inside jokes and specific phrases that happen organically. Many people here have known each other for many years, so obviously, the way they talk, the different references and inside jokes won't make sense to someone who's not in that group. But my advice is to just roll with it, because that's how Internet forums work.

I'm sure you must be familiar with memes, they seem to originate randomly, no one knows how they first start, and then they persist in the public's consciousness for quite some time.

"I like Ogre" is one of the phrases that developed uniquely to CYS, and it's just funny to say sometimes even when the context doesn't demand it. There's not a lot to be confused about, Avo, but I do understand that if you're not familiar with forum culture, it might seem really weird.

Basically, it's funny to occasionally say "I like Ogre!", and then that starts a chain of "I like Ogres".

The thing is, we all do like Ogre11 a lot. He's a newly minted admin, a user who has helped out many over the years, wrote some amazing games, and has been a pillar of the community. But we're all not obsessed with ogres, or a bunch of fanatics. Because I feel like you might have misinterpreted the situation, and I don't think all the subsequent "I like Ogre!"s or the copypastas by Milton and Cavus are helping with your confusion, so I thought I'd try and come in with a genuine explanation. That being said, I really loved the copypastas, lol.

Copypasta is another internet term which basically means a giant text well usually created for silly or trolling purposes, that's just meant to be a joke or subtly ironic. I don't recommend you look into this stuff, but I just want to let you know that this is already a well established phenomenon in internet cultures.

Don't be too hung up on these things, it's just fun and don't worry, it's nothing more then a fun thing to say. There's certain CYS colloquialisms that people say because it's fun, it helps the feeling of community, and it's just nice. I mean, people aren't going to be overly serious here, and generally joke and troll around because many of us have demanding jobs/tough situations outside the site, so when we're on here, it's to have fun with people some of us have known for years, while also improving writing.

Petros is not really a racist, Elder-God obsessed Lovecraftian fanatic mod, he's messing with you. If someone says something that seems alarming or really weird to you, it's probably a joke. Petros doesn't hate you, no one here hates you, it's just that people sometimes mess with 12 year olds sometimes because you guys take things more seriously than adults on here, and don't realize that some things are just jokes.

TLDR: have fun, you're doing a great job joining the community, and a lot of the things you think are "insane" are just inside jokes and references in the community.

     A lot of things I take seriously because I don't realize, like you said, and sometimes I do because I find it fun.

I didn't understand it either for the longest time. For a while, I kept saying I liked Ogre because I didn't want to be left out like an outcast. I said the words, but I didn't truly understand the meaning.

After a while, I began to question the meaning of doing this. What was the point in saying something to fit in if you didn't really mean it? What did it matter if I liked Ogre or not? Would he or anyone really care if I didn't say it? I had no particular feelings about Ogre one way or another. No one would care if I didn't say it one time right?

Then one day, I didn't say it. Everyone looked at me, waiting for the words to spill out of my mouth. They waited, and waited, and waited...and kept waiting. I was firm in my silence. I was determined to live out my truth.

Once the crowd understood I had no intention to say that I liked Ogre, they began to surround me and draw in close. At first I thought they were going to pile on me in outrage, but all they did was hug me. After the first one closed his arms around me, I began to have an emotional meltdown.

I was angry. I was angry at the world...and at myself. I was blind in what should have been my dominant eye since I was born. I've was struggling against financial debt incurred on me because of a desperate business venture that never panned out. My parents hadn't talked to me since graduating Highschool despite my attempts to reconcile with the emotional and physical abuse I suffered for years. I recently had to have my right foot amputated because of gout caused by poor hygiene. My attempts to maintain good hygiene were mostly in vain due to living on the street for the past five years. I recently had my right, dominant hand amputated because of an injury caused by a runaway car. My attempts to connect to a community were strained because of the aforementioned issues. I couldn't afford a psychiatrist and healthcare is almost non-existent.

To say I was depressed was an understatement.

Receiving that group hug was the first step to healing and acknowledgement that I needed in a long time.

Then, he arrived.

He invited me to live in his house, rent-free. He cleaned me up, paid for my medical bills and was the performing surgeon. I now have a fully-functional prosthetic hand and foot that are almost indistinguishable from the real deal. The tumor blocking my vision in my right eye was removed with no complications. He got me hired at his place of business, and I've been financially stable ever since. I have a constant source of friends I met at work who care about me, him included. He became an intermediary between my parents and me, and they apologized and made full reparations and more in tears.

He never asked for anything in return.

I like Ogre.

Okay this is my favorite explanation yet!

In all honesty I like Ogre. He's polite, he's a good sport about things (like my contest predictions), and he tends to be firm yet understanding, whereas every other veteran is either a sadist or is so nice I secretly wonder if they're a serial killer.

Maybe you should suggest she check out the Nitro site. There's no actual way to talk to other users there so Stranger Danger is not a problem, and it's used by a lot of schools too, she might be fine with it. It's just a racing game to see who types the fastest.

     Because the readers are engaged by being able to make choices (if make make those choices and the situations interesting) can you make a fun and engaging story without following the pyramid method (I learned to call it the pyramid method)? Because I've never really been good at the turning point and like to write freely, also you do a if the next word starts with a letter that isn't a vowel and do an if the next word does start with a vowel, right?

     I just did a round of editing to my Demon Doll story and want to know if I need to fix or change anything else.

I gave your story a bit of a read! To be honest, I definitely agree with you that it's much better than your other story so far. The world you've invented reminds me a bit of a cross between Chucky and Resident Evil.

I do think, at times, you have a tendency to be over-explanatory, which can feel disjointed. For instance, when you tell us that the dolls are a United States government project, you could have explained it through the letter itself, as if we were reading it, as opposed to blurting it out in brackets as though it's a third-party interjection to the reader. Some sentences could also do with a bit more proofreading.

Overall, though, I do love the story so far; the direction you're going is very cool. A few things I think need a bit more fleshing out, though:

You mention that the dolls have wiped out half of America. You need to explain how or why with a bit more depth, along with more reaction from the cast. You just kind of drop it and move on, assuming the reader will fill in the gaps. A big and complex plot device like that needs more guidance from the writer. There also needs to be more explanation as to why ALL the dolls seem to be murderous except for the one we meet in the story. The fact that they are death row inmates isn't justification enough. The spell must do something, and for whatever reason, our doll is immune. For the dolls to be a legit military force and to be taken serious in taking over half of America they need more power than just being 'souls in dolls'.

The mystery of us being in the magic circle is super cool, too, especially the mystery of how we got there. You can do a lot with that. Maybe tease some thoughts about our life before this event occurred to anchor the reader in the protagonist's identity.

With all that being said, I'm definitely enjoying it so far, and if you maintain this quality to completion, I'd definitely rate it rather highly. Good job! :)

You can make a story good and entertaining no matter the plot if it's written well enough. For beginner writers, I would recommend following basic structures, but ultimately writing is so fun because you can do whatever the heck you want. It's your story. :) Also, you're right about the a/an thing.

That's respectable, I would see both the negative and positives of this, but mainly that "my mom" wants what is best for me and to not go through what my big sis did... And yes, not everyone will go through the same situations, but your mom's job is to protect, love, discipline, and teach you (a long with other things, and these aren't in order) But I'm sure you know she wants what is best for you :)

It's A before a consonant and AN before a vowel, you're right. Though it's also AN with words that just sound like they start with vowels. As with a lot of things, you can see what sounds natural by saying it out loud. "I'm going to look at a house in an hour."

I know the feeling. I started hoarding titles shortly after I came to this realization. I've got a bunch of barely started or entirely unstarted stories with cool titles just waiting for inspiration or a contest where I can use them XD.

IDK, I didn't try hard I just spooled out a story. When I try too hard, I tend to make a story of lower quality. I do best when I just go with it.

Just make a short story, although doing that I ended up with a bit over 1,200 words so maybe not the best but better than going over.

Netflix ruined it. If you ever do watch it, watch the original American anime-style show. It has one of the best character developments I have ever seen in any form of media—and I'm not being dramatic or ironic or sarcastic (referring to Zuko, of course).

I love Avatar: The Last Airbender so much. If anybody hasn't seen it, please do. It's definitely worth your while. Just whatever you do, don't watch the movie version. 

Absolutely. I was prepared to be unimpressed after the way others were gushing about it, but I got hooked and binged all three seasons.

Little bit rough in the beginning because the animation isn't quite as good and it leans a little too much on the more typical kind of humor you'd see in a kid's show, but it really comes into its own by the two parter at the end of the first season--that's where I'd start later for rewatches.

"Redeemed villains" are probably my favorite kind of character arc, and Zuko's is more complex than any I've seen in most shows for adults. They really take their time with making it come about naturally and don't make it easy for him.

Well, the votes can be slow coming in sometimes because not everybody is able to make time to sit down and read 4000 words and comment on the same days, with people being busy or just lazy.

You can take that time to read stories in need of more ratings in the meantime.

You might even want to read a couple of mine that have not had enough people finish them (assuming you can handle mature material), such as By the Light of Day and Fey Light. Or maybe even Witch Hunter: An Uninvited Guest. (kind of like The Witcher). Or perhaps even my long unpunslished Brother's Grimm style Hansel and Grettle story, The Cottage, which I wrote way back in 2018 when you were in swaddling clothes, which I just returned to the light of day this afternoon. ;)

Woah, woah, woah, not you, I think they are not really for kids. You could probably handle The Cottage though, but unfortunately it requires images at this point (You'd basically have to either use Reader view or highlight the text with your mouse to read it, since it's bright text on dark images). So yeah, more Blister, since all those have some dark themes.

I wouldn't delete it. You can just keep it in your profile unpublished, it might be interesting for you to look back at later once you've learned more about writing, or you may want to take the same idea and use it in a new story.
