I feel like this and the render unto Caesar thing, and the my kingdom is not of this world thing, is why Christianity is such a good fit with western liberalism, constitutional republics, secular governments and all that. Probably comes from the fact that early Christians had to exist under a government that wanted no part of them. All religions leak into government, but Christianity can thrive without doing so, and a lot of other religions cannot.

"Life isn't just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind much more than just DNA. Through speech, music, literature, and movies... what we've seen, heard, felt... anger, joy, and sorrow... these are the things I will pass on. That's what I live for. We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with. The human race will probably come to an end some time, and new species may rule over this planet. Earth may not be forever, but we still have the responsibility to leave what traces of life we can. Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing." - Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty Just kidding. This is the real quote.

I'm reading Crime and Punishment right now and came across this little speech:

"You never reach any truth without making fourteen mistakes and very likely a hundred and fourteen. And a fine thing, too, in its way; but we can't even make mistakes on our own account!

"Talk nonsense, but talk your own nonsense, and I'll kiss you for it. To go wrong in one's own way is better than to go right in someone else's. In the first case you are a man, in the second you're no better than a bird.

"And what are we doing now? In science, development, thought, invention, ideals, aims, liberalism, judgment, experience and everything, everything, everything, we are still in the preparatory class at school. We prefer to live on other people's ideas, it's what we are used to!"

*Note: "liberalism" had a very different meaning in 1860s Russia than it does in the US today, lol

Here's my "favorite" quote by Winston Churchill: "I hate Indians... They are a beastly people with a beastly religion."

Great historical figures often have both wonderful and terrible aspects within them, inextricably linked, and when trying to determine their legacy, it is hard to reconcile the incredible things Churchill did with his deplorable viewpoints.

He's considered a controversial figure these days. He was undeniably pivotal in leading the UK during WWII but also yeah, did a lot of harm in India and didn't seem to regret it. (India was under British rule at the time.)

Most historical figures are complicated that way though, humans are complex. Even Gandhi was known to be an asshole at times. (You probably don't know who Gandhi is. Relates to India though and it's a little like not knowing who Martin Luther King Jr is, so look him up: https://www.britannica.com/)

Even MLK was a huge womanizer. This is definitely known.

There's been some other shit that's come out about him though, but it's one of those things where you sort of have to make your own judgment call that he was just fucking around on his wife all the time or he was approaching freak level with the sex shit.

Nowhere near Diddy level of course, but there's a bit going on that he knew about some rape shit that his fellows were involved with and not only did he not try to stop it, he was egging them on.

Is it true or is it just the FBI making up shit? Well again that's what you gotta decide, along with if something like this cancels out all the other stuff he did.

New Daily Quotes Thread

Never heard anything about rape, but I think it's pretty well known by now he was screwing around.

Of course that's mostly known because the FBI was spying on him lol. My own hot take head canon at one point actually was that he might have arranged his own assassination when he realized they were about to come out with all his dirty laundry and undermine the movement, knowing a lot as he did about how public opinion worked. (Yes I know the prevailing conspiracy theory is that the government did him in, but why would they make a martyr when they had all this other info that was even better?)

Slightly unrelated fun fact: Christianity existed in India before the British ever set foot on our shores. Many believe that the apostle St. Thomas first spread the word when he reached the coast of south west India. European missionaries were in turn, quite surprised when the "savages" had their own version of the Christian faith. I wonder what Churchill would think about that.

Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there.

It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.

(I'll post the next two over the course of the day.)

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

I think? It's basically just saying that you did something that someone else is really well known for doing. For instance, if someone constantly rolls a nat 1 on d20s, and they're called "Bob," then if someone else also rolls a nat 1 a few times in a row, it's common for them to say "I did a Bob!"

Why, he's the great sky god who saved the Deltans from extinction! All hail the Boooooooooooooooooooooooooob! (Pronounced Bob, but drawn out)

How's the series, UD? I read the first book a few years ago, meant to get back to it, but never did. I really did like the idea of it though, an engineer piloting and controlling several clone AI versions of himself across the galaxy, solving problems and making a new civilization. I'm assuming like any other sci fi series, it probably gets a lot weirder from here on out, right?

While that is a good point, it is kinda hard in certain situations to easily move the conversations over to PMs. And people probably forget that they exist sometimes. On top of that, it makes it so that others can't join in if they want, or even just sit back and watch the chaos.

I do want to point out that it's quite interesting that Avo can't resist any sort of conversation that goes on within threads.  (Not that I'm complaining, mind you; It breathes some life into the sometimes stale forums.) Then again, I also have my own quirks, such as tending to post in blocks and clog up the front page with my posts before disappearing for hours on end.

After the civil war, when there was for the first time in US history talk of voting rights for women, many argued that women can't even take care of themselves. They need to, you know, be helped into carriages, and you got to take their coat etc. One woman spoke up who had a slightly different experience:

Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or gives me any best place! And, ain‘t I a woman? ... I have ploughed and planted and gathered into barns, and no man could head me. And, ain‘t I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man—when I could get it—and bear the lash as well! And, ain’t I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen them most all sold into slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief none but Jesus heard me! And, ain’t I a woman?”

I was going to do something else today, but this post was too good, and I keep returning to it.

So here's a quote from this very website:

"In less than two months from now, you'll look back on this year as it fades away, so what do you want to see?

A writer who doesn't write in a graveyard of unfinished stories?
A compulsive liar surrounded by missed deadlines and broken promises?
A has-been clinging onto past moments of triumph, slowly fading from relevance?

You said THIS was the year you would ACHIEVE SOMETHING! Weren’t you going to be BETTER than last year? Surely REGRESSION wasn’t in your new year’s resolution? If you don't keep to your goals, you're LYING TO YOURSELF and everyone else.

Come on, is this really the story you want this year to tell? A tale of failure, not because you lost the race, but because you never even made it to the starting line? Such a shame.

Laziness and apathy aren't quirky CYStian traits. They are bad habits. An EXCUSE for SLOTHFUL WAYS that keep you from achieving TRUE GREATNESS!

BREAK THE PATTERN OF PROCRASTINATION.
MAKE THE MOST OF THESE LAST TWO MONTHS AND FINISH THE YEAR STRONG.
WORK ON SOMETHING---ANYTHING---TODAY!

You know that bathrooms don't have bouncers standing outside them making sure that only the right gendered people go in, right? There are tonnes of instances of men going into bathrooms and either attempting to or successfully raping women in there... And none of them had to pretend to be trans to get in there. He was talking about creating scientific models. He was being a bit cheeky, since you can't literally make something "simpler than possible," but the point stands.

He's trying to warn scientists to be careful about either making a model too complex: ad hoc things, things not necessary (such as the luminiferous aether, something special relativity renders unnecessary), adding things that don't increase the predictive power of the model, etc; but also too simple: spherical cows, spherical cows, spherical cows. At some point there are too many spherical cows.

Wow, that's some serious dedication! We usually make a few things from scratch, but not much; Always been amazed at people who are able to do all of that for one meal.

And large gatherings of people can be fun, as you can chat with a lot of people and play party games that require obscene numbers of players, but it can also get quite crowded if you don't have enough room, and there is bound to be drama sooner or later. Although that could be a good thing, depending on who is involved, what it's about, and your stance on it all.

Thanks for reviving the thread, bhp!

I'll add another quote from a book that I thought was particularly striking, at least for me. I think Chris and a few other Blood Meridian fans will enjoy this one.

It's one of the coolest giant run on sentences I've seen in literature, and to me, it's kind of equal to the "Hate" monologue from "I have no mouth". Till this point in the book, I thought that this was going to be a regular Western, but this specific sentence marked a drastic shift, and now Blood Meridian is almost split up into 2 parts for me: Before "Legion of Horribles" and After "legion of horribles".

Because at this point of the book, the characters are part of this marauding band venturing into Mexico to fight Mexicans, but they get attacked by a Comanche war band. And this sentence basically describes the Comanche warriors, with imagery that's really imaginative, wild, and pretty disturbing.

Anyways, here's the sentence that I thought was really cool, if a bit grimdark, so I guess if you're particularly young, or especially susceptible to disturbing imagery, don't read this:

"A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or cranefeathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeontailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust and many with their braids spliced up with the hair of other beasts until they trailed upon the ground and their horses' ears and tails worked with bits of brightly colored cloth and one whose horse's whole head was painted crimson red and all the horsemen's faces gaudy and grotesque with daubings like a company of mounted clowns, death hilarious, all howling in a barbarous tongue and riding down upon them like a horde from a hell more horrible yet than the brimstone land of Christian reckoning, screeching and yammering and clothed in smoke like those vaporous beings in regions beyond right knowing where the eye wanders and the lip jerks and drools."

- Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian.

Just read Constellaris Court yesterday (amazing game, btw; Hats off to Mystic for making it), and boy does it have some good quotes. So, for the first time, I'm going to be quoting a storygame from this very website!

Side note, I'm glad to see others adding quotes to this, and thank you, bhp, for reviving this thread while I was away a few days ago. The italics should also be gone by now, so onto the quote!

Oh, ok. Probably should've know that :P I only remember the names of 3 presidents... ack, I was trying to look up a quote Trump said and laugh at him but I couldn't find a stupid one. God, who are these people making up quotes on how good he is? Or is he just claiming to do actually good things and not doing them?

New Daily Quotes Thread

No, you shouldn't know this, not necessarily. These things you just pick up as you get older. Trump isn't funny imho, George Bush was funny, every second writing book seems to have a Bush quote or three.

New Daily Quotes Thread

The best ones are George W. Bush. I believe I have already posted my favorite here: "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." Also the classic, "You're working hard to put food on your family." Sometimes I wonder if he was just trolling.

Meanwhile Trump's most known quote is, "Grab 'em by the pussy."

And that's all from Constellaris Court! If anyone has more storygames with good quotes I could use, please let me know! Just finished reading an autobiography in English class, and found a good quote from it.

(Don't mind me, just moving down the italics)

We were the masters of nature, the masters of the world. We had transcended everything — death, fatigue, our natural needs. We were stronger than cold and hunger, stronger than the guns and the desire to die, doomed and rootless, nothing but numbers, we were the only men on earth.

I have had deep-dish pizza before, and while I do agree that it is more of a casserole than a pizza, if you get used to it, then it is still quite delicious.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. ---Samuel Beckett (quoted out of context)

New Daily Quotes Thread

Probably why it doesn't make sense (it being quoted out of context). Is this just because of the lack of context or are they using incorrect grammar when saying ever tried and ever failed? It would make more sense as a question, but those are periods.

New Daily Quotes Thread

Sentence fragments are a thing. Becket uses these poetically, to create almost a poem, though he views it more as a mantra.

You are right that the first two fragments post the question "Have you ever tried? Have you ever failed?" But clearly these are rhetorical questions. Of course you have tried something; of course you have failed before. So he states them more as a reminder. "If you ever tried something, you know failure." The use of the period reinforces this.

Then he encourages you to try again. Promises you that you will fail again, but also that you will fail better than before.

Quoted in isolation it is often seen to carry a positive connotation, while in the context of the entire pieace it takes on a more sarcastic tone. That's why I wrote "quoted out of context."

I like the quote nevertheless because it illustrates how science and engineering work and how humanity makes progress more generally, both individually and as a whole.
