I feel like this has been said by a disproportionate number of US presidents.

Technically, the quote is saying he didn't have sex with Monica Lewinsky. I would hope the majority of presidents have never had sex with Monica Lewinsky.

I really don't understand why it sounds like some of y'all are paedophobias or antipathies with some of these quotes. I might not have kids myself, and I know people have their own opinions, but I am looking forward to having kids, to be able to take part in creating by far one of the greatest things in this world, that I would be able to raise them, teach them, love them just like my parents did.... plus, everyone here is either a child or was a child, so why hate them so much?? I have great respect for people who do their best, whatever it takes to provide and care for their children, I admire and want to strive to be like my parents.

I do believe in God myself, and in the importance of Christianity, but in a more personal and meaningful way now than when I was a kid just accepting everything that was being shoveled at me. (The way it went for me, a lot of that stuff I had to kind of just drop in the garbage with the realization that there were and DEFINITELY still are many commonly accepted and taught things that have been stapled onto "Christian culture" in the US that don't line up at all with Christ's actual teachings. Now I am an unpatriotic heretic and it owns.)

Strangely I kind of agree with this. If there is no god/etc, you bring someone into a world without meaning and they may struggle with that. If there is a god and a Hell, by bringing them into the world, you've already guaranteed them a high chance of eternal suffering. Seems exceptionally cruel. On the other hand, maybe doing it for the species mitigates the cruelty. The species caries on, while the individual suffers.

And if there's a god/Hell, well, more people born might save others from Hell. So while you doom them to pain and suffering and potential everlasting torment, you also create someone who might save many others from eternal torment.

Unless, of course, God is cruel and playing a sick joke and everyone ends up in Hell.

Could be a fun storygame loosely based on old Gnosticism. The "true" god is imprisoned by the evil cruel god, and you must help him defeat the false god. Kind of like how old Gnostic Christians believed Yahweh (the creator god/Demiurge) was a lesser deity with cruel streaks or major charactor flaws, and the true god came to the world through Jesus (at least a few of them believed this; I believe the overwhelming majority of gnostics believed he was more of a messenger than god incarnate).

The only part of that, to my knowledge, that is from Gnosticism is the idea that Yahweh (the Old Testament god) is not the true god and Jesus was sent by the true got to reveal super duper secrets that had been hidden since then. There are lots of spins on it too, all of them really out there and, to me, interesting af.

Maybe it is just because I'm Christian and I do not allow myself to consider other alternatives because I know God is real, but according to the Bible, God gives people children as a blessing, a command to be fruitful and multiply, and a way to bring more souls to heaven and learn about His love. Children are seen as a reward and a precious heritage from God, offering opportunities for joy, love, and spiritual growth for the entire family. As well as children are active participants in worship and service to God; Children can be called by God and hear his voice.

One of the primary reasons God created us is rooted in His nature of love. God is love (1 John 4:8), and love, by its very nature, is relational and seeks expression. The act of creating the universe and humanity can be understood as God's desire to share His love, relationship, and goodness with us.

God desires an earthly family, and to eventually bring us to heaven with him, and God gave us the free will to choose him. A world where humans are forced to obey would be devoid of genuine love, because love requires a choice. The Bible teaches that humans are created in God's image, possessing qualities like the capacity for love and justice, and the ability to make their own choices.

The Bible encourages individuals to "choose life" by choosing to obey God's commands and listen to His voice, which would be meaningless without the freedom to choose otherwise. When a person chooses to follow God, it is an expression of genuine faith and commitment, demonstrating a heart that truly desires a relationship with Him.

I know this is a long explanation, but being a Christian, I believe in sharing my belief and using the Bible to answer questions and topics like this one :D

Gnosticism is just an ancient branch of Christianity that went by the wayside. There used to be a lot of weird versions. Still are quite a few odd versions, actually. My pet theory is that Islam formed from the remnants of one of them, which is why Jesus is a revered prophet in it. But I base that on absolutely nothing.

Nothing wrong with that. Theologians do that sort of thing. My brother's a pastor and he's quite informed on these other branches of Christianity and all the fringe Christian ideas (such as the pre-Adamic race and so on). But for you it's just your faith, so all you need worry about is being as the Bible tells you to.

I just read I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. I am such a noob, of course, but that was an interesting read.

It's just about my favorite sci fi horror thing ever.

There's also an author approved point and click adventure game that departs a lot from the story, fleshes out the characters more etc, and it's really good in its own right.

The game contains the HATE monologue voiced by Ellison himself, but for the longest time I thought I was going crazy because I clearly remembered reading it as part of the story back in highschool too. Somebody actually corrected me on this before when I referred to that quote as being in the story.

But now I revel in contempt for them, because after discussing it last night (Ace was looking for short story recommendations), today I discover that YES, I WAS NOT CRAZY.

The short story appeared in a collection with the same name with commentary by the author, and this is the uncut version the game got it from. The one most people have read was a magazine version that had to be edited down for size.

Anyway, that's the entire book there and worth a read if you're new to Ellison. (Warning: not motivational)

Cause there is violence and sexual content (the latter at least in the uncensored version of the story; granted, it's just discussing it, not leaning into it, but it certainly is there).

I like violence, with action being my favorite movie genre along with "lighter" thrillers

Yall might find my story for the End Master's Contest a bit.... unusual or unconventional. Still no cuss words and maybe a small amount of "sexual content" but nothing big or crazy. I have a disclaimer and a "Parent's Guide" lined up to go along with it because it is violent and dark and most likely not suitable for 12 year olds or younger.

I'll probably let you (fluxion) and Mizal be proofreaders when the time comes, that is if y'all want to, but it wouldn't be for a few weeks.

Depends, it's why i'm still thinking about it. I might make two separate stories, with one just focusing on the part of the story that is educational for the contest that would not include all the dark themes and violence, and the other one being the full story that would not be entered into the contest

Can't really avoid dark subject matter in a lot of cases anyway especially when dealing with history. Will is Mr. Sunshine over there and most of his stories are about outlaws, serial killers, and there sure are a lot of middle school classrooms that have visited his Donnor Party game.

Okay so by "sexual content," it's mostly just the narrator mentioning that they have sex. It's really PG-13 level in that respect. This isn't romance novel stuff. (unrelated, as a snot-nosed teenager, I used to go into the library or bookstores and time myself to see how quickly I could find a sex scene in a romance novel to get laughs from my friends. Let me tell you, those things are straight up porn. Took me on average like 20 seconds lmao).

I thought you were Blister saying this for a moment and wondered how the hell this tale didn't end with him whipping himself for sinning so hard.

I imagine that many a fetish started as genuine self-flagellation in the cause of righteousness and purification.

I'm looking forward to Ace getting to it, last night he read There Will Come Soft Rains which is shorter than your average Thunderdome entry, and the part with the dog already messed him up. His experience with short fiction apparently begins and ends with Hemingway in school, there's so much classic, practically genre defining sci fi out there though.

I just finshed reading it after clicking the link, and I highly reccomend that for anyone who hasn't. It only takes a few minutes to read and it's well worth that time.

I feel like people who feel depressed or beaten down by the world or something like that would be motivated by this.

Eh, anyone who has struggled to learn something and put shoulder to the plow until they got it has felt this. For me, I took Calc I as a college freshman without anything remotely resembling a solid foundation in trigonometry or geometry, and while I took Algebra II in highschool, that was my sophmore year and I didn't remember too much of it. That was tough. Getting a B felt like a major accomplishment (but I still retook it online the next semester as I took Calc II to move it to an A). I actually spent a couple years as a math and science tutor a little bit after that, interestingly enough.

Point is, while you're right to an extent, this quote would resonate with anyone who has struggled with something and overcame it, be it learning an academic topic, mastering some craft, losing weight, whatever.

How were you allowed to take Calc as a freshmen without taking the other classes first? (alg 1, geo, alg 2, and precal)

Because I utterly crushed the ACT, did well on the math and science section, and I DID take Algebra II, and I also took Pre-calculus, which incorporated some trig (but I forgot the overwhelming majority of it by the time I got to college, because I spent a couple years screwing off).

EDIT: let me add that it's possible to get a C or B in a class in highschool while not really learning anything. Even a math class. In one ear, out the other. In fact it's possible to do this in college. Matter of fact, when I took Statistics, my professor gave us a home work assignment on Monday, we turned it in on Friday, and the test the next Friday was LITERALLY THE SAME as the homework, except a change of numbers. Let me tell you I learned almost nothing and got a perfect score in that class. The whole symmester was like this.

My mistake was taking the statistics course for business majors, lol. Also she said "wire bowl" instead of variable and I stil laugh about it to this day. The racist inside me I guess.

We are discussing the trend for a particular generation to not be all that good at abstract thought. Causes of this are potentially vast and poorly understood, but they may include things like short-form videos which are constantly consumed, a shift from empiricism to postmodernism in education, an ideological shift from freedom of expression and the Market Place of Ideas to freedom from harm, and many other things that seem to be turning humans into braindead pussies.

Abstract thinking is a skill where you are able to reason things that are not spelled out for you and connect ideas without somebody holding your hand along the way. 

Edit: You appear to be a small child, so it's more understandable why you aren't quite as adept at this kind of thinking.  It's still troubling that many kids today seem to have lost this ability or never gained it in the first place.

I still think that it would've been reasonable to know what abstract thinking was by just reading Mizal and Fluxions's posts (I'd never heard the term before and a quick google search proved my assumptions correct), as they gave examples of what an absence of it would entail. 

Being aware that there is a lot you don't understand is excellent. Never lose that. I'm sure some philosopher like Socrates must have pointed out that being aware of what you don't know is the first step to wisdom or learning or something. Since this is a motivational quote thread, maybe something like, "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing."

Yeah, Socrates. Had to look up the exact phrasing though, it's "True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing."

To explain what I meant about that example specifically, "Cast your bread upon the waters and after many days it will come back to you" is a famous saying, basically an old timey version of "what goes around comes around" or the idea of karma.

The absolute literalist reading is that it's telling you to feed ducks lol. But no, it's not saying to literally go out and throw bread in the water. It's a metaphor, bread in the ancient world was of course super important, that was most people's primary sustenance and an agrarian society in many ways was built around it.

So you can look at it like the symbolic idea of putting things that are good and nourishing out into the world, to be carried off by whims and currents to people or places in ways you have no control over and no expectation of ever seeing again or receiving appreciation for. An act of kindness that God/the universe will still remember.

(This is in line with Jesus's much later teachings about giving generously and in secret and expecting nothing in return, and at odds with the NLT's translation that twists it to be more about investing money for profit in a practical guaranteed way. Which is what I was complaining about at first but that's a different thing.)

The Bible is full of poetry and metaphors and symbolism, I'll have to check later to see what else the "contemporary" version skips over or dumbs down entirely, helpfully sparing the children not only the need to think, but the strenuous effort of asking an AI to spell it out for them in the smallest words possible instead.
