It will be randomised, but you can use the 'swap' card to team up with members you want to work with.
Locked (Not that it matters for mods, of course).
I'll join
I'm in! Yahoo!
Not sure if someone else mentioned this, but probably changing the number of featured comments per story to 5 rather than 3 seeing as there's been an increase in better comments in general.
(And an increase in shitposting comments as well, but as we all know, the fools have got to have their fun)
Alright, I like reviewing. I'll toss my hat in the ring!
Locked!
Ill Join team 3 for the funsies, but ill take it a bit slower than usual.
I'm in this year too.
Do your worst.
Logged on for the first time in awhile and saw my pointless points had dwindled from a whopping 480 to a measley 380. This seems like a good chance to totally not get distracted and sink further into the pit of shame... what could go wrong?
I'm going to enter to force myself to review one story this summer at least. I haven't looked at this in ages so this could be fun. Might try to get something started tonight so at the very least I have something.
My understang is that I just need to do a review and it will automatically count towards the contest.. let me know if I need to post my review in a specific thread or something.
Oh, I must have forgotten to link the tracking thread. I'll ask Will to edit the OP later, but you should track all your reviews there and we'll add them to the leaderboard.
Yeah, a few years... it's good to talk to you again, Mizal. I hope things have been going well around here!
Oh, I see. I guess I should go do that and get an easy 50 points... maybe.
Thanks! I am glad to be back. This writing community is the best I've found, and I haven't been motivated to read or write as much as I should be.
I appreciate the feedback! The Gower story was very fun to write with input from Gower himself. I hope he is still around! The time loop story I'm surprised to hear positive feedback because it was my first story and really just a way to test the editor. At the time it was written it got very poor feedback... but I did update some of the issues and I'm glad you liked it!
Glad to hear he is writing a new story and still around! I'm terribly sorry about the AI generated papers though... Last I heard, as far as 20 years from now, they never figure out a solution to this problem.
Hmm... yeah, that must have been some static or hacking: something was messing with your communications. You should really use the tried and true tin cups on a string method rather than all this crappy internet stuff. Boring grammar was not Gower's thing.
Yep, they are the same thing.
Damn it, I'm in
Can I join Team 3
Hey, another familiar face. I hope life is treating you well, Ace.
Inside joke? Or did someone take over Mizal's account? It's been awhile--anything is possible here.
Ah, I didn't notice it in his original post because I read it while doing something else, haha. I get it!
I'm just as slow as I used to be.
I've also been okay. Thank you!
Count me in.
I'll sign up!
Steal cards wouldn't be released too often. There will be mini-challenges once a week with the chance to win a card (which may or may not be 'steal') and/or points, not to mention that a steal could be blocked with a 'stop' card. Most teams would remain with their members for most, if not the entire duration, of this contest. I suppose for really loyal teams, there's also the possibility of swapping two members of other teams just to cause a bit of chaos.
Goddamn it. I just HAD to say "Do your worst" didn't I?
Fuck it. Time to review.
EDIT: Last year there was a rule stating that for a review to qualify, it had to be authored by someone who had been active since at least 2020. Will that be the case this year?
According to the rules, no. According to recommendations, you have a higher chance of your comment getting noticed if it is an active member.
I vote we change team # 4's name to "Your Worst" or "Doing your worst"
How about just "The Worst"
Only in jest. I don't really mind who I'm teamed up with.
I'm aware, but I cope with comedy, or spite. I'll only cry for a minute and then review a story or something. Plus it seems like I can switch people off my team if I want, so that's fun!
Until then, we can be team "The Worst" I'll concur and that makes 2/3 vote!
Ironic since Shadowdrake is the only one on that team with a review so far.
That would certainly be a great way to skyrocket to the top of the leaderboard. Also, it looks like your team is winning so far.
I'll take the points, then ship him off too the worst team and realize my dream of writing an entire story game out of just comments on other peoples stories, complete with choices, multiple endings, and somewhat relevant feedback. I play for keeps... until tomorrow when I lose motivation.
Nah. I did complete a 1,500 word review of Ace's story though.
If I was gonna review Eternal (again) it'd take me the length of this contest to finish it. Eternal is a masterpiece.
I appreciate the vote of confidence! When I eject Ben I'll bring you on board team "The Worst"
My service seems to be causing double posting issues. My apologies.
Yeah, the storygame doesn't have to be authored by someone active since 2020. However, if anyone is thinking of only reviewing 2-length storygames from long-forgotten authors, well, let's just say that they're not going to be handed out commendations easily.
Could I join in a few weeks? By then, I might have the time to work on reviewing games.
You can join at any time according to the rules. Just a pro-tip... lurk until you are ready to join. Once you make a post like this there is a chance you are just considered "in" the contest.
Well, I guess it's time to rearrange my schedule now.
If you wait until everyone else forgets about this... you might just sneak into an easy victory! Although there are a lot of people in this mob. I wouldn't feel pressured, all you need is one good comment on 3 months. Take your time.
Heh, not for me! I've still got finals coming up, so it's crunch time!
I say this, yet I spend half my time just listening to audiobooks. At least now I have something else to procrastinate with.
Team 3 is Fucked is an excellent name
Team 2 should be Grill Night and the Newbie
As this has come up a few times in questions, it's probably best to clarify it here: Rating a story gives you a Site Point, but that has no bearing on the contest. Writing a normal, non-featured review is generally welcomed, but in this contest, it does not give you any points (but still, feel free to track them because it makes us more likely to see and consider featuring those comments). Now, onto featured reviews. Depending on storygame length, they each give a different number of Contest Points (see the original post for this). Getting a review commended gives you 2 Site Points and you get another 3 for daily commendations, but since the mods are generous people, you could also get additional Site Points (same scoring system as Contest Points). These would be distributed at some point, probably after the contest has concluded.
It’s time for the first Mini Challenge, where you compete against other participants to win an advantage. Which team will emerge victorious? May the best review win! The Challenge Participants must write the best review they can of Shadow of a God-King. Each participant can submit one entry. The winner will be selected by the author, Fluxion. For the three of you who have already reviewed that story, just choose another one of Fluxion’s stories and comment on that instead. Reward
The winning team will get a ‘Select’ card. This enables you to limit another team's reviews to a specific storygame genre for 72 hours! Additionally, writing a featured review would grant you 7 Contest Points and up to 23 Site Points*. *1 point for rating the storygame, 2 points for the featured review, 3 points for daily commendation, 10 points if you’re the most commended that day, and 7 extra points. And all this just for one review, that’s insane. Deadline You have until 11.59pm EST on 9th June 2025 (Monday). To participate, post your review on the storygame itself and make a note of that as a reply to this post. (Apologies for the late post! Normally, challenges would be released on Friday and you would have until Sunday to complete them, but I have been very busy with packing items for an upcoming trip).
LOL I am honored. I doubt anyone else reviews it though. The reward seems small for the 126,000-word 136,000-word count (since updates). Then again... imagine forcing a team to review only fan fiction.
If no one does it can I pick my teammate's review which is already done? I feel like giving our team the default win is fair. And Mousecore's review was phenomenal.
I'll have you know that I'm half way done... with the prologue...
That's not a bad move: It was intriguing. I did already find two minor grammatical mistakes... but it's otherwise very well-written. However, I tend to not mind a slow start/slow burn story as much as other people. Knowing details of the world helps me get into it.
End manages to read and rank his contest storygames in a couple of days, which often includes really large entries. The last few times I reviewed long stories, it takes at most slightly over a day (and yes, I also do other things like meet friends, work on university projects and occasionally watch movies). But out of curiosity, how long does everyone take on average to read and review stories? I might consider extending this challenge if it'll make it more feasible.
(Also I planned this mini-challenge before the contest began to keep up with the tradition of spotlighting a contest-winning story, and I had no idea Flux was even joining let alone that his team would do so well).
The last 7 length story I read took me 3 days... so it's not unreasonable to do this in a weekend. However, I personally have other plans this weekend preventing me from spending a lot of time on this. It's summer, so people might be hit-or-miss on weekends. Also, some of us are slow readers.
I agree with this I tend to take notes so I can point out specific tips to help the author improve... not a ton just like a few examples. I also like to read every path to get a sense of the entire story not the one branch I read.
For reference, because it was asked, I'm still not done with my review of "Shadow of the God King". I'm probably slower than most but I will probably finish it tonight. I have a ton of notes and just started chapter 3... I plan to write a long review and have a lot of feedback. I didn't actually have much time to read until yesterday, when I finished an entire chapter (I went back to see how every choice affected the story as well, but it was not clear). This could be finished in 3 days (a weekend)--even with the long review process--but it would have to be a completely free weekend without other plans or work getting in the way.
I don't think the mini game was unreasonable, just pointing this out for reference to those making the mini games.
Yeah, I noticed this and figured the game had a lot of coding for this type of thing; however, the changes aren't apparent to the reader. I was very confused that you could skip chapters in the beginning because that would erase all the choices before hand. I'll have comments about this for you, so we don't need to discuss here. You can always message me after the comment if something doesn't make sense or you want to talk about something though.
Could you send me the scripting for that sort of thing? I'd really appreciate it.
Like Mizal said, all I did was set the variables to the proper value with each link. Just like when you do it in any other page. So for each chapter I have a list of variables that I set to 0, 1, 2 or whatever values I wanted them to be to ensure on page scripting and other things are what I wanted. The only trick is just remembering which choices affected which variable, and putting them in to be activated at the start of the chapter.
% LIBRARY := 1
% BULLY :=1
(disregard spaces obviously; Libraray being 1 is dependent on a previous variable, but it's irrelevant after the library scene so I just went with that the rest of the story)
So just regular variables. Since they all link to chapter starts, I didn't have to use DEST to link to a specific page within a chapter, but I did do that for testing puproses and then removed the link when I published.
That's really helpful! Thanks Fluxion!
Yeah, I'm shooting for a featured review, haha. I appreciate the encouragement! I was posting because someone had asked how long a review takes... now I need to go actually finish that story!
Maybe I'll say that the best new review wins, so if only one person reviews it and writes 'story gud' they win by default. At the very least this, may inspire some shorter comments and take off some of the pressure of writing a long review.
Pffft I have until midnight tomorrow. I can get a good review in by then
I think it will be funnier if someone force a team to read romance and dating, since they are equally as awful. The fanfiction section at least has some bones to it.
It goes by EST, so you have two hours, technically. I think. Maybe.
Now that the first Mini Challenge is over, @Fluxion will judge the entries and decide on a winner. Although I've been away, Will has noted that five individuals have taken up the challenge: Darksoul, Liminal and Mizal have reviewed Shadow of a God-King, whereas RK and Mousecore reviewed Fluxion's other stories. May the best challenger win.
Looks like no one on my team managed a review... so I'll be looking at the love and dating section to see if any are readable...
Noted! I can review your game and some of these other suggestions if it happens.
Haha, I haven't read as many stories as you might guess. Also, anything written in the last four years would be new to me now. I appreciate the recommendations!
Reviewing other active members stories is the most fun part of this! I have always enjoyed the community here, and helping people who might actually read the comment to improve is more rewarding. I'll get to it after I finish "shadow of a god king" (even if we don't get restricted). I'm assuming I'll actually have time to read today and tomorrow... so I'll probably finish my review around the time we get restricted if it happens, haha.
I believe I already have a featured review on this... unless it's been replaced? I appreciate the suggestion, although I was mostly joking!
All is fair in love contests and war. My review is 6 years old, so it was bound to happen. I did go check, and I did review that one. No clue if it was ever featured, but I seem to remember it being featured a long time ago.
Yeah, bad timing. That game is very interesting. However, I'm sure there are more good stories in there! I haven't read that category a ton--so I'm not sure how true the trope that they are all bad, sappy romance stories is.
So, this was difficult. Mizal's review made me laugh. Liminal's was succinct and focused on a couple things I really tried to emphasize (character thoughts and world building). The three others were very in-depth, well written and very helpful (and clearly took a lot of effort given their lengths). In fact, DarkSoul, RK, and Mousecore all wrote fantastic reviews, and it was really hard for me to decide between them. Since all three were high quality, I had to look at other things to choose.
In the end, one of these reviews actually helped me improve the story it was written about, and that's Mousecore's. Without Mousecore's review, I wouldn't have noticed a scripting error in By the Light of Day. Years later, I can't imagine how many one's or two's of people managed to get to the end and wonder who the hell Sebastian and Emily were when they hadn't even met them in the story. But now that should be fixed, thanks to this review.
Consequently, I award the points to Mousecore (and of course, The Review Bored—although I can assure you, team bias played no role here... yeah.).
Sounds... legit?
Agreed. Big prizes for this contest... might keep people engaged for the full 3 months--maybe.
...Time to call in sick to work and read for a week straight.

You lot are lucky Pierre isn’t in this contest, because as far as I’m concerned he’s soundly beaten the chicken soup out of all of you.
Get this man on Team 8!
I feel bad because this person might not speak English as a first language... but the comment on Eternal is wild. They are reading these very quickly though... I think I spent like weeks flipping through Eternal alone.
Man, I am so bad at these challenges. I only managed one... and I had been working on that one review since the start of the last challenge! It just happened to count. Living up to team The Worst's name!
Edit: ended with 2 because one got featured after I posted
Yeah, reviewing longer stories is nice points wise... and I am "way to detailed" on my reviews. I appreciate the encouragement! 3-5 was my goal, but I suppose it worked out...
Congratulations to you as well, RK! I didn't think 2 would win it... but looks like my last-second bribe came in handy! It's about time the review board didn't win something... and perhaps we can use our power up to "stop" them! Haha.
Yeah, thanks Will! The contest has been fun so far. This was a nice challenge and kept me motivated.
I'd like to join this contest! Maintaining a facade of productivity is an important thing, y'know.
I'm interested in taking part in this! Now that I've been at my new job a while, I should have some extra time on my hands.
It's a good thing this is a summer reading competition... or you guys would surely win with that name!
Perhaps... you have given us much to consider on this team name. Only time will tell!
Don't tell me you've forgotten about Sentinel Penguin, the spork-wielding mod. But he's often referred to as a penguinite so maybe that's a different species entirely.
I had an interesting thing happen, so I figured I would just bring it up and ask the dumb question: There was a comment that I had get featured twice. I'm not sure if this was an accident because two mods got to it at once, one mod with two personalities got to it first, or if it was an intentional attempt to give more pointless-points for the one review. The obvious question is does this count for double the points in the contest? Or is do I just enjoy the fact that an accounting error worked in my favor this time?
Well you get the comms since there's no way to take them away (yet) but for the contest purposes it only counts once.
What happened was I was going through all the recent comments on stories and just clicking the story links in different tabs so I could easily just feature stuff.
Ended up featuring yours twice by accident since I'd featured it while featuring one of Cat's (I think) and when I got to the original tab I'd opened you got featured again while I was just clicking through.
I figured it was something like this; I often double post things when my internet is lagging or I have two windows open. For now, I'll enjoy the extra points and brag about them to make it more hilarious when the mods come back to collect them like undercollected taxes.
Holding his breath, Shadowdrake listened carefully from his perch in the willow tree. All he could hear was the gentle gurgling of the stream to his back and the natural silence of the forest sleeping in front of him, as if this were the only patch of woods in CYStia undiscovered by the bands of delinquents that camped along the riverbank. It even smelled pristine, earthy, as if a rainstorm had just washed away the unpleasant smells that festered in the city proper, but this night was clear.
"Come on," Shadowdrake27 pleaded as he peered into the darkness. "We need this to catch the review board..."
Seeing nothing, he was about to leave when a twig snapped. There was a rustling of leaves, but nothing came into view. Shadowdrake27 blinked and scratched his head, leaning forward to get a better view as if something might materialize in front of him.
Empty space muttered in the clearing under the willows branches, which hung down like curtains thinly separating the rest of the forest from a 20 foot diameter around the tree. Leaning closer, Shadowdrake27 struggled to hear the words being uttered by nothing--as if the wind itself could whisper--when RK suddenly appeared.
A gasp and gentle thud broke the silence of the night as Shadowdrake27 fell from the lowest branches of the willow tree. Pain shot through his back as he laid on it in the cool grass with the misty breeze rolling over him from across the river.
“Are you okay,” RK asked, leaning over Shadowdrake27, worry spreading across his face.
“Yeah…” Shadowdrake27 groaned, struggling to his feet. “I didn’t know you could turn invisible.”
“You did say to make sure no one saw me heading here—not even my own teammates.”
“It would have been okay for me to see you coming though.”
“Sorry about that: when you are the last of the great hot dog wizards, you take warnings of caution seriously! Especially since Yummyfood is missing these days.” RK scanned the forest and added, “So, you said you had a way to take down the review board?”
“Indeed, but we are waiting on—“ Shadowdrake27 started before he was interrupted by soft whistling coming from the complete darkness deeper in the forest.
RK and Shadowdrake27 scrambled behind the Willow tree and peered into the darkness; strolling up to the tree while whistling a merry tune in utter darkness, Will emerged with a warm smile on his face. He stopped on the other side of the tree and finished the tune before looking around.
“I’m here—as promised!” Will announced in a friendly tone.
“Can you keep it down?” Shadowdrake27 hissed, stepping out from behind the tree with RK. “The goal was to meet secretly!”
“Oh, I doubt they can hear us… they are too far ahead. Besides, they are all asleep: everyone is—except us three.”
A shiver ran down Shadowdrake27’s spine as he looked around—noting for the first time that they were alone and isolated. He cleared his throat and responded a bit louder, “Fine, did you bring the stuff?”
“Indeed!” Will’s smile broadened. “30 points, 15 for each of you.”
“Thanks, Will! This will allow us to—“
“But there is a catch!” Will interrupts. “Two, actually. First, these are for your teams, not for you two.”
“That’s fair,” RK said with a smile of his own. “These will make a huge difference!”
“Second,” Will continued with the smile growing to an unnatural smirk. His eyes gleamed with joy as his words formed slowly and clearly. “You can split the points evenly… or one of you can steal all 30; however, if you both try to steal you both get nothing.”
“What?” Shadowdrake27 exclaimed. “This was not the deal! We agreed on 15 points each!”
“And I held up my end of the bargain… you both can take them if you agree.”
“Fine, RK let’s just—“
“No, no, no!” Will interrupted again. “Not so quickly, little dragon. You will give your reply to me privately, and I’ll only count the final answer at the end of the weekend.” The smile on Wills face seemed to split his face in half as his eyes grew so wide they caught the moonlight like a cat stalking its prey in the night.
Shadowdrake27 gritted his teeth, but RK pointed out, “15 points make a huge difference… but 30 points changes everything. I see why this would be tempting, and it’s not a true challenge without a twist.”
“RK, what are you saying?” Shadowdrake27 questioned as the sun began to rise. He clenched his fists as a few early risers began to crowd around and pick up on what was happening.
“Just that we have a game to play,” RK responded casually, waving his staff as if swatting away a fly. “We both seem to be good at games… this should be fun.”
“Steal the points!” someone shouted from the crowd that had formed—craving blood even in a battle of whits.
“This is CYStia, after all,” Will chided.
“Hey! What’s going on over here?” Jster02 called from the forest, walking towards the growing mob.
“Welcome newcomer!” Will said in a friendly tone, his usual warm smile reappearing. “Let’s get you on a team; it’s never too late to join the fun!”
The pair walked off towards the river as Shadowdrake27 and RK faced each other in the expanding sunlight. Will never looked back, as if he was unaware of the chaos he created in his wake.
Surprise! I based your character off the profile picture... so I took a few liberties. I assume you also can use magic to make condiments appear for a BBQ, but very little is known about wizards.
Yeah, game theory assumes a head to head and had you go for the both the safer play and higher upside play. In this game, it's best to say you will split and choose steal. Saying you will steal is madness because it guarantees 0 points. However, picking steal has two outcomes of 0 or 30 with an average of 15; meanwhile, actually picking split has two out comes with 15 and -30 averaging -7.5. It's statistically better to pick steal.
I also picked split though. Knowing your opponent changes the game, and we have been amicable so far. It's also a group game rather than a head to head. I see the worst case being all the points get lost as the review BORED (sorry Rex) runs away with it. Therefore picking split ensures the 30 points get into the game for someone that isn't already winning. Also, 15 points is like two really long reviews which is fought 2 weeks of work for me... I'm okay with the 15. If I get 0, it only took me a few minutes to write that review anyway.
Mizal is correct: I'm probably the most boring person to have playing this game... however, I'm also busy during the days and only free at night really. If I were to make a back stabbing move it would probably happen 3 minutes after the deadline
Well, if Cavus didn't say it, I will. Someone commend this.
I appreciate the vote of confidence! Glad people liked the short story... I haven't been writing much recently, so it's nice to get positive feedback.
Also, pointing out the 30 hours remaining is diabolical, haha. Time can be a cruel thing when making decisions.
I do apologize, it was just glossed over in my story. That is a very easy slip up to make.
Alright, I'll bite. I missed writing reviews. Put me in the game, coach!
Alright, I should really get around to actually doing this. First though, we really need a team name.
My suggestions, cringy as they are:
That is all.
The Final Draft sounds best to me.
Yes, the Final Draft definitely captures that aura of procrastination we have all experienced at some point into the past, only to make something decent at the last minute :)
I saw your message and will check it out! Might be a bit because longer stories are hard for me this week/weekend... but I'm going to try to do a few longer ones next week!
I would like to join this competition!
Week 4: Mini Challenge The first month of the contest is coming to an end! While it still could be anyone’s game, we shall now introduce a challenge which may change the course of July. The Challenge Post as many feature-worthy reviews on the stories of your fellow participants as you can. Please track these reviews as a reply to this linked post so that it would be easier to distinguish from your other reviews (and it also draws my attention to your newest reviews to consider for featuring). Reward
The winning team will get a ‘Swap’ card. It will allow you to replace someone on your own team with a more productive competitor or, if you’re too cowardly nice to backstab someone, swap the members of two other teams. But there's no strategic reason for any team not to steal at this stage. Deadline You have until 11.59pm EST on 30th June 2025 (Monday). Good luck!
Thanks for letting me know, it's fixed now. I would not count those comments just to give everyone an even playing field, and that way, no one would have more than 4 days to complete this challenge.
This would be hilarious. The opposite of the weekend where nothing was featured until like the last hour of the contest where the featured reviews were all rolled out on Sunday (or Monday? I don't remember...).
Just to check - do any featured comments over the weekend count towards our overall points total?
Any featured review for a story written by someone in this contest. You can look at the teams posts to get a list of everyone who counts and go to their profiles. Some people posted links to their stories as well.
Yeah, I know that - I want to clarify that any featured reviews would still be added to the total points collected for the contest and that the lengths would still be scored the same.
Yes, they still count towards your overall points total, where longer storygames are rewarded. But for this challenge, quantity of reviews may be more important than storygame length.
Mini Challenge Results
It is great to see so many reviews submitted for this challenge. Kudos to everyone who participated! Now, let’s reveal who the winners are:
In third place, we have Fluxion with 7 featured reviews! Congratulations to him—guess he won’t be replaced anytime soon. Next, in second place, with 8 featured reviews, is Cat! She’s also currently in first place with an astonishing lead of 67 points.
Now, our winner of this challenge wrote 10 featured reviews in just four days (I was so surprised, I had to double check just to be sure). Well done to YellowCake! And because you’re currently the only member of your team, you get to choose someone to join you. But since it’s a swap card, the next participant who signs up would automatically join your new member’s previous team instead.
Other individuals who wrote featured reviews include: Cavus, Fresh and Suranna (2 featured reviews each), and Clayfinger, Goodnight, RK and Shadowdrake (1 featured review each). A round of applause to everyone, and I’m glad this challenge inspired some members to get onto the leaderboard :)
Congrats to Yellowcake! Your swap card is well-deserved. :)
Thank you all for your kind words! This was a very hard and long fought battle, and Cat was a worthy rival. Fluxion gave me quite the fright with his last minute comeback too.
A Special Thanks to RKrallonor! For without his kind words requesting me to join, I might never have.
As for the swap card, kind deeds travel far. Without further ado, I introduce to you RKrallonor of Team 10! (We really need to rename the team, I'm thinking of calling it 'The Bakers', cause we've been cooking!)
I also am missing from the list entirely
I just got a comment featured that I wrote prior to the contest. I assume I can't count it in my score.
A good rule of thumb is to pick out specific details you liked and specific details you didn't. Be constructive and make sure you're not mean. It might be worth taking a look at some of the featured reviews on storygame already, just to get an idea.
Any story on this site at all. You get different points based on the length of the storygames, too.
As long as you read, rate and review, I think you stand a good chance of not failing.
That's great! If you want to join the contest, you just have to post saying you want to join and wait to be put onto a team. Once you are, you'll start counting any featured comments you get.
Since I believe I’m about the only admin bothering to feature comments (Other than maybe Mizal occasionally) a few old comments are getting featured since it’s typically a case of me actually paying attention to the comment section for a change. Really I’m only doing it when I see it on the front page anyway, I’m certainly not digging deep into the comments list.
Personally I think they should still be counted, but its Will and Mystic’s contest so its up to them.
I’m also only half paying attention to who is actually in the contest since so many have joined and I haven’t kept up. Some of them I know for sure are in it because I’m seeing consistent input. Others haven’t done shit, so I’m not even certain they’re even in it at all.
I’m more or less going by effort I see with the comments. Longer ones are generally getting priority mainly because as was pointed out there’s more than a few stories that just have very short comments on them. Since there’s currently a “5 comm limit” some shit might be getting bumped off. If you want to know priority in such things, well…
The older and less active the member comment, the more likely it can get bumped. Same is true if you see a comment by an unwashed “guest” that never actually made an account. (Though there shouldn’t be too many of those actually featured)
If you’re a little more familiar with the rich complex lore of CYS, you can also apply this to members that are now banned, fallen out of favor for various reasons or in rare cases changed their account and going by a new one now. (Try and guess which ones!)
Things of course get judged a little more if there's already 5 and they're all by current contest members. And since I feel like I'm doing more work than I need to anyway, I might just let another admin decide. (Hopefully Mizal's paying attention in this case!)
And contrary to popular belief I actually am skimming through the comments enough to notice if someone was just spamming bullshit. For example Fluxion is lucky someone else featured his one comments where at the end he spammed the same words over and over again a shitload of times, because I certainly wouldn’t have regardless of the rest of the content. Don’t do this, it’s annoying.
Honestly though I don’t really care if you’re being mean on the comments, but I haven’t really seen this anyway. I suppose Rex might be the closest, but he’s a lot more subdued than most here having only recently gained citizenship and all. I haven’t seen a swear laden rant about how an author should go kill themselves or something by anyone, of course this could change if Petros starts commenting more on stuff.
Presumably most of the REALLY shitty stories are deleted by now or taken down anyway, so none of the current ones are going to stir up enough omnidirectional hatred. Ben’s stories might be the exception, but that’s to be expected.
I was using the term "mean" very loosely. Most of the comment have been pretty standard really. Like I said I think a couple of yours and maybe a couple of Flux's have been on the "meaner" side, but again it was more a general statement that if I did see a truly mean comment it's not like I wouldn't feature it as long as it wasn't just someone spamming "Kill ur self faggot, lol" 3 million times.
Stuff like that you want to save for the forums after all.
Good work! Now you won't be banned
Is he even in the contest?
Done anyway.
I've spoken with Will about it and we've decided that previously-written reviews featured during the duration of this contest would receive half points. This prevents anyone from relying solely on them, while also recognizing previous good effort.
Does that mean (for instance) a 7 length storygame review would get 3.5 points?
This is almost like the old days when we used to have threads called “Draw My Attention” (Later “Risk My Attention”)
Here’s an example of what it consisted of if you weren’t around for those.

It actually goes back further than that. Oldest ones go back as far as 10 years ago or more.
Week 5: Mini Challenge The Challenge Write the best review you can of any EndMaster storygame. Respond to this post with the story you’ve reviewed and End would decide on the winner. Reward The winning team will get a ‘Strengthen’ card. This would enable you to double the number of reviews you post on a day of your choosing.
Deadline You have until 11.59pm EST on 6th July 2025 (Sunday). Happy reviewing!
I actually never suggested anything since I didn't really think my general style would be something you were into. Then again I've been wrong about that before. (Gower gave surprisingly high praise to all the stuff he has read for example)
Anyway, yeah Rogues if you want a long fantasy story with a bunch of different endings. Though if you want something long that's non-fantasy I'd say Ground Zero.
Any reviews written before the announcement of this mini challenge would not be counted. But those of you who have already written featured reviews on End's stories have a slight advantage, in that you know the kind of reviews he enjoys :)
Since this mini-challenge, I've gotten reviews featured for:
The Pure, the Vile, and the Deadly
I have reviewed the stories shown below by EndMaster and have featured comments on all of them for week 5 five mini challenge:
Just finished The Pure, The Vile and The Deadly.
It is the longest review I have ever written for anything, even when I was still posting in my blog regularly.
Unfortunately, I have fallen behind on my reading and reviewing, due to being at a convention yesterday. We'll see if I can do better during this next week.
Good luck :)
Thanks! I'd say the same to you, but you're doing well, having managed first place in only a few days. So well done for that!
Oh by the the time I saw you tearing your hair out after getting through half the epilogues, I was silently laughing to myself. "Oh he's going to fucking flip if he manages to stick with it long enough to get to epilogue 10. This is going to be so hilarious!"
Oh I’m calling a winner now. It’s Rex.
Trust me, I liked a lot of people’s comments, but I knew when he was determined to try to read Rogues over the weekend, hilarity was going to ensue.
Honestly all the critiques he did of the story isn’t surprising since I’ve seen his other reviews. In fact whether he actually liked it or not wasn’t even a factor, it was more to see if he’d actually be stubborn enough to read through EVERY fucking epilogue. (Especially since I knew how angry he was getting lol.)
And he was, so he gets the trooper award.
If he ended up quitting, Cat probably would have won with her comment on PVD.
I'm curious about the analysis now...
Can I ask the reason why you disqualified me from the contest?
I do not use AI, I create google docs drafts before reading and edit it along the way, then copy paste it here.
If you don't believe me then click here
Well when I review, I leave a comment for a story if I like it, if its well written, and its rated among the top ( but I do leave a comment for not so popular stories sometimes ). Some stories I just read and rate without leaving a comment.
Do you rate all the stories you read?
Yeah
I read the other featured comments and learned it from there.
Well, reading the story sometimes doesn't give you all the information, others might have things you might be missing, but I will try to read the stories more instead of reading other featured comments, so thanks :)
What information about a story can you glean from a comment about the story that isn't in the story itself?
I don't care if you are disqualified or not, but most people avoid reading comments before reviewing a story to avoid letting their opinions get swayed by someone else's. This is a writing website, so people take pride in their writing and reviewing. I'm just going to warn you that your defense is not helping you.
From what I've skimmed, your argument is basically, "I'm not using AI to plagiarize other people's reviews; plagiarism is something I can do myself." If that's your defense go with it... otherwise I'd just stop reading comments until after your reviews are written.
Thanks, but some people think when I have the same idea as someone it plagiarism, I do not want to offend or fight with anyone so I decided not to write reviews anymore.
"Some people think," implies that you think I'm incorrect. That's fine... I've been wrong a lot. On this site specifically, I've been wrong a lot. However, how is writing a review based on other people's review of a story not plagiarism? Even if you are writing a review being critical of another review, you would need to use your own thoughts about the story to argue your points...
You literally said something to the effect of, "I wrote my review based on these other reviews because I didn't find all of the information in the actual story." I haven't even read your reviews... I'm just stating something you already wrote in this thread. If you didn't take information from other comments to write your reviews and just had similar thoughts as other people... I'm fine with that.
Also, I tend to write really long reviews made from notes I take while reading the story. I include very specific feedback referencing the story because I can literally copy a specific passage into my notes and break it down. To my knowledge, I've never been accused of using AI or plagiarism. There is something you are doing that caused people to notice your reviews specifically... I'm really not trying to be mean.
Maybe try writing a comment without referencing another comment and look to see what's different, or ask people why they think you are using AI if you really don't know why this is happening. I've already stated why I thought you were guilty, and I find that people aren't shy around here. Just don't be surprised if people respond when you post in a thread. Everyone is going to have a different opinion and none will match your exactly.
There are 2 references of death song in The Pure, the Vile, and the Deadly featured comments:
I remembered her conversation with the Death Song protagonist (who this story reveals is named Will) and how she had a ready answer to his question about why she didn’t kill him. It never occurred to me that her lengthy monologue was due to the fact that she had actually considered such a thing at one point. By benholmen44 ________________________________________________________ The eldritch threat faced here feels appropriately alien, but it helps that it has been seen before in other EndMaster games, such as in Necromancer and Death Song, and the torment ending of Eternal. Then why do you have Petros' n-word pass on your profile without having ever read the storygame, unless you stole it from another member's profile? And in that case, it wouldn't be the first time you've claimed someone else's effort as your own.
Oh, sorry, I didn't know petros n-word pass was inside a story, I thought it was a joke and put it in my profile, I will remove it if it bothers you.
Well that solves that suspicion. I wasn't sure if it was AI or just going through the slightly more complicated task of looking through other reviews and just paraphrasing them.
I do not only read trough the reviews and paraphrase it, I read the story and get the main idea and takes some information from other featured comments and write a review.
Well, I have bad news for you. That was one of his reviews I chose to examine and there were lots of similarities to other reviews (I used a highlighted color coded system, so you can match his 'story-specific details' to the other reviews below it). Link to the document here.
If you wish to blacklist me, then go for it, I just want to apologize. I really wanted to make a positive contribution to the site, but apparently some folks don't get along with me. They've gone ahead and taken screenshots of what I said in private messages and posted them publicly.
I'd also like to say that there is no rule stating that we can't borrow ideas from other highlighted comments. Copying someone else's comment word for word, however, would be against the rules, which I know and would never try to do. But borrowing some points and rephrasing those, and then reading the story and coming up with my own interpretation based on that, is something different.
If you're against me using your private messages, then I will refrain from doing so, despite that being the most accurate indicator of our latest discussion. But let me set the record straight before you start accusing anyone of 'blacklisting' you for no reason. First, I asked for your writing process, to which you replied that you use google docs drafts. Naturally, I asked to see these with the version history (which would prove your innocence since it shows your progress over time). Then you mentioned having 'deleted the older, unfinished reviews' 40 days ago, which means they're not recoverable. My last message to you which proves, beyond reasonable doubt, that you're guilty of the allegations against you: "Fine, I'll humor you. So you've written all those reviews and coincidentally, right before you're questioned, you post the last review of the batch you wrote over a month in advance? Well, here's how I know you're lying. You mentioned reading other reviews to get ideas. You did this in your Laconia review.
Crimson's review (posted on 6/23/2025): 'There’s a moment where you choose whether or not to lie to Elizabeth, and it hit harder than I expected. It’s not just a simple choice between truth and deception. It feels more like a choice between owning your shadow or protecting the image you’ve built. (...) But because the game leans into historical fiction, having a British woman as a soldier in World War II threw me off a bit. It created a bit of cognitive dissonance that pulled me out of the immersion.'
Your review (posted on 7/5/2025): 'The supporting characters, especially Elizabeth, offer a welcome contrast and tension. While her presence as a British soldier might be historically an eyebrow-raiser, her relationship with Karl is well-drawn and emotionally resonant. It adds another level of conflict, one that makes you consider not just what Karl does, but who he is when the mask is off.'
There are many other similarities between the two reviews on my document. Now, you claim to have deleted your drafts 30 days ago, aka on 8/6/2025. That means you could not have referenced Crimson's review since it was not posted yet. Thus, all logic and occam's razor leads to one conclusion: you're lying. Why? Because you didn't write those reviews, and you've instead fed a Gen-AI model featured comments and storygame descriptions, and have no version history on your google documents to show otherwise. I rest my case." (Note: I meant 6/8/2025 in that last paragraph but mixed it up because I learned dates the British way and the site records them differently. Still, my argument stands). And your response? You simply asked me to end this argument. Very well. I will drop this matter and move on, but let it be known that rephrasing a few points and coming up with your own opinions after reading the story is, in fact, not what you were doing.
Fine blame me all you want, I will try to not go against your wishes ever again your highness.
I will read after my current one.
Ooooh! I know this one! "Lol, fag."
Please keep track of your team's reviews as a reply to the latest post in the tracking thread. Also, this may be a good time for a team to use a sabotage card, who knows?
Considering neither of my teammates had put in an appearance by the time I went to bed last night, I knew we had no hope of winning. Well done, Review Bored!
Just to confirm, individual points are safe, right?
Well, that's good! Honestly, my goal is to get the trophy for reading and rating half of the storygames on this site by the end of this year, so this contest is helping a huge amount with that.
I want to write a review for the first story I read, any recommendations?
Thanks a lot :)
I have to say... this might be the largest turn out of any contest I've ever taken part in. Well done, Will! It seems like a good contest. The ban list is also looming large these days.
I fear it will be a double-edged sword. Much like the dwarves, who mined too deeply, too greedily, blind to the horror they awakened, so too might this contest lead to disaster. After all, how can we review stories if there are no stories awaiting review?
Now that I think of it, maybe an analogy better than Middle Earth is FernGully. Yeah. We kept cutting down the trees, and foolishly freed Tim Curry to sensually suck out all our poisonous fumes and destroy our little forest of stories awaiting review....
You know what I kind of lost where I was going with this.
I thought the record of entrants into the Pit of Shame was the last contest...though I confess I don't know just how many people were shamed then, compared to how many are in danger now.
