Player Comments on How To Play A Game

I've decided to write a longer comment because I want to make sure people see a few details. First, This was cute. It was funny and showed what the basics used to be, and for the most part holds up. This story is a relic and should be treasured. It also answers the long asked question of "where is Killa_Robot's toaster?"

More importantly though, this needs an overhaul to serve its original purpose. Currently its an oddity of a bygone age.

Choices are hyperlinks now. There are no Treasure Chests,
There are no Folder Tabs, The game start button no longer says, "Play This Game!" So on,

It does a great job still, of showing cute features like unclickable LINKS, in game items, and pictures, including animated ones.

This is by far the most incredible story I've seen so far. For the first time in all my 40 years as a renowned CYOA critic, a career that's rightfully led to my nickname in the business- "The Cynical Bastard"- I have no criticism to give. As for my praise, well...

The setting was perfect, picking sophisticated elements from a wide variety of genres to be all inclusive for all readers and obviously represent the value of multifaceted society. I personally was thrilled to find aspects of Fantasy and, among my all time favourites, hints of Taiwanese history and non-fictional cooking recipes. How such a diverse range of intrinsically vital commentary on human life has been covered in an impressive 943 words, I have no idea.

The characters were all excellently fleshed out and really made this story for me. Each and every one felt like a real person, leaping to life with their very actions without having to even say a word, testimonious to your unadulterated familiarity with anthropology. Not only did I form a profoundly close attachment to the toaster, but the French baker was the perfect metaphor for the excessive consumerist society we live in. Bravo.

Moving on from the characters, development of the latter was undeniably rife throughout the whole thing, punctuating each choice the reader makes to emphasise the importance of choice, a quintessential foundation of the CYOA genre, and beautifully painting the whole story in flecks of stark realism amid the fundamentally surreal je ne sais quoi perspective it begins with.

Furthermore, the plot had me on the edge of my seat and kept me entertained for hours as I desperately searched for every possible route, paling the comparatively petty works of modern raconteurs in its complex, yet easily followed, nuances. Truly, this story speaks of both a masterful grasp on the English lexicon and a thorough comprehension of how to tell a tale that really touches on every aspect of modern human condition, culture, politics, philanthropy, sociological constructions, and philosophy. I was stunned.

Simply... astounding.

Gee, this game is an example of how to use items! It doesn't cover anything else, but it covers item use (and how to play CYS games)!

Also, I acknowledge that I am a little biased...

It's certainly cute, but a bit outdated. Also, it's nearly summer of 2023 (only a month off) or it already has been in the northern hemisphere, and we still don't get our items popping out of our computer?

So, it’s the summer of 2023. Where’s the toaster delivery system?

RELIC.

Playing through as I hadn't bothered before and wanted to experience the heralded majesty for myself.

This game, perhaps more than any other I have played, lives up to it's summary and name. With an applaudable scarcity of words and needless description, it cuts like a literary knife through the dross of useless tutorials. It's concise presentation of "How To Play A Game" would be difficult to top.

The only thing that brings the luster of this gem down is that the actual text, particularly for the first few pages, is littered with exceptionally outdated references and indicators for elements that are no longer part of the interface. It is impressive that the options and steps still function so smoothly and that is a testament to the stability and support provided by the site for CYA authors.

Although perhaps not necessary for most people able to navigate the internet, because it seems to be just intuitive, this game (as its title says) shows how CYS CYOA games work. Also, it does promise a toaster delivery system - so there's that.

Overall, Nice because I like toast, and toaster waffles, toaster waffles are good.

The information on how items work was somewhat useful, but I think all of the information within this guide was already fairly obvious. Still somewhat helpful, though.

It was short, quick, and fun. I would definitely call this a helpful tutorial for users who are new to this site.

By the way, Did you know that the "first electric toaster was invented in 1893 by Alan MacMasters in Scotland. He called the device the “Eclipse Toaster,” and it was manufactured and marketed in Britain by the Crompton Company. It toasted only one side of the bread, so you had to flip the bread over manually." (the text within the quotation marks was pulled from Wikipedia)

Well, this game was fun! ... If only to see how outdated it is. Where do I even start?

There are no check boxes. There are no circles. There are no treasure chest icons. There is no inventory button. There is no look button. I can see the goddam toaster... And what the hell is MyAdventureGame.com? :p

That said, it's great playing this game a whole 18 years after it was made and feeling very relieved by how much it's been improved from the needlessly complicated piece of ancient technology that it was back then ^_^

This would be very helpful to Newbies. They would understand how to play a storygame. This would make it easier than just jumping straight into another storygame, like Snow. I now highly recommend this storygame for Newbies! ^_^

This is a pretty good guide on how to play the games, though I feel the best way to truly learn is to jump right in, otherwise the guide is written well and it is fairly informative, which is good for newcomers.

A fun way tutorial to the site but it is outdated and would probably confuse any newcomers to the site now. I also didn't come across this until I had long discovered how to play storygames on this site anyway, so it definitely needs a remake and maybe could be linked in one of the guides in the Help and Info section. Regardless, I enjoyed it :)

I like the concept of being able to use this "game" as a walkthrough for the game, and could be helpful for new users, however it needs to be overhaulled first so it actually gives the correct information.

Good stuff. Actually one of the better games here at the site, since it doesn't have speeling/cApitalizaTion/the grammer mistakes which make your eyes bleed.
