Player Comments on Dead Man Walking (Zombie Survival)

Berka's Dead Man Walking is a love letter to what makes the zombie genre as endlessly addictive as it is.

<<<SPOILERS BELOW. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED>>>

As a massive fan of that genre, DMW was extremely easy to get instantly hooked. Its a serious, mostly grounded take, but isn't afraid to include and put its own spin on the normal but enjoyable tropes such as different types of zombies to smash and playing as an Average Joe who must balance morality and ethics with survival and practicality.

In other words, the game knows exactly what it wants to be and wastes zero time in dropping you right in - almost as quick and brutal as a real outbreak would. You begin dazed and hurt in dark, cold, filled with dead and dread subway tunnel - the train you were a passenger on having wrecked for unknown reasons - and immediately you must use your wits and grit to escape. Death is nigh and very much possible from the start, and every counter needs to be thought out and the each result is as well-written as the last.

This, of course, leads into my next bit of praise - the pacing. The game is as quick as it is chaotic. There are brief moments of respite and exposition sprinkled throughout, it certainly isn't nonstop, but Berka nails the urgency and stakes of the story without pushing you or limiting the exploration. The game perhaps unironically feels like the Dead Rising games of old - where you have complete freedom to explore and scavenge - but an ultimate goal beckons you to never spend too much time in one place or on one thing. It will pay the ultimate price if you choose to do so.

The dialogue, encounters, and action are all executed very well here, and the game even has some very enjoyable Easter eggs for the enlightened reader to try and find. This piece is as gamey as it needs to be but also contains a story as alluring and expertly-crafted as the subject matter demands. From a section on the fictional contagion that caused the whole thing, to multiple weapons and ways to get around the city - Dead Man Walking is as good a zombie IF piece can get, I dare to say.

Now, onto the few criticisms I have.

The contagion and its origin were both fresh and well thought out, and I enjoyed having an outbreak that doesn't completely end the world for once, as that is both overdone and overdue, being as such a real zombie apocalypse most likely wouldn't result in a direct real life adaption the the hit AMC show The Walking Dead. However, given this, I do feel like the story would have benefitted from being just a tad longer, and maybe even a bit harder. What we have here is a small piece of the best well-done steak ever, but I'm having the natural curiosity one would in food this good, and I simply can't help but wonder how it would taste if it was both bigger and cooked more. This is being mentioned as a flaw because I personally feel it was set up for it, but ultimately feels average in length. But to say this, I must acknowledge the heavy replayability and impressive number of choices and characters - the steak certainly doesn't NEED what I mentioned earlier - but it could certainly benefit from it.

The end states, even the best ones, were fulfilling and overall satisfying enough, especially given the sorta rare conclusion of the world NOT ending this time. Unfortunately, and perhaps it is due to me wishing for more, they felt not rushed, but a little abrupt. If you make it to the wilderness, its enough to live untouched for months before the military rolls in and takes it from there - no final battle, no tension, mistrust, or issues whatsoever. Felt a little unrealistic, and some more fleshing out really would have driven it home perfectly for me. This is pretty much all I meant with saying it honestly could be a tiny bit longer.

In conclusion, DMW is definitely not BerkaZerka's magnum opus; but it is surely one of the most intelligently-written and downright enjoyable games on the site, as well as certainly being the best zombie one. If this game were to exist as a physical being and IF box Killa_Robot's own excellent zombie tale, it would beat it in the 3rd round out of 5 using superior prose, more meaningful choices, and sheer scope. In the end, both are great, but Berka is, for now, the undisputed CYS Champion of Zombie Games.

This is an excellent storygame, and it is quite obvious to those with a functioning brain why this is one of the best storygames in the site, but I do not think that it is the very best. It had a hard battle with stories like Eternal, but with the way the author wrote this, it could very well win that battle.

The flow of the writing was set at a perfect pace. The writing was complex and didn't have that choppy feel that you get from some of the stories that can be found on this site, which greatly improved the flow and gave it a very smooth feel. Action scenes were smoothly developed and foreshadowed admiringly by the author, creating a good suspenseful feeling for me as a reader.

The way the plot was developed was simply masterful. This story had everything; exposition, raising action, numerous climactic scenes, even more action and suspense that couldn't be quite labeled as "falling action", and a variety of resolutions. Each scene kept me on the edge of my seat and I found myself clicking that link to the next page faster than Usain Bolt can run.

The writing was very descriptive and I could clearly picture each scene in my mind, and I felt as though I was actually a part of the story. Generic movie crap isn't included in this story, and it really comes down to you and your brain.

Each character in the story is introduced and developed in a way that makes me feel as if I've known them for a long time and I can understand everything about them. They become part of the virtual world created by the author's writing and play an important role in developing the story.

It is quite obvious that a great deal of time and effort was put into proofreading this because I didn't notice any mistakes in grammar or spelling, and even if I had, I doubt they would have taken anything from this storygame.

The story reminds me of the Energizer Bunny commercials: it keeps going, and going, and going. This is a good thing. I backed up and tried different paths a few times and was pleasantly surprised (and a bit awed) to find that the author has created quite a complex, sprawling spider-web of possible storylines, giving the story a lot of replayability.

I love the lack of an actual inventory and the way your choices affect later portions of the story. I believe whole portions of pages have script-driven text which "remember" the choices you made. Throughout, the author presents difficult scenarios for the main character to puzzle through, and the whole experience feels very open-ended, as many choices are shades of grey, rather than overtly evil/good, foolish/intelligent, pragmatic/emotional.

The story has minimal typos and I only found one "bug," demonstrating the author's commitment to proofreading and editing. At times, I would have liked a bit more action rather than explanation, particularly with the length of these portions, but overall the story had a nice pace and rarely felt dull. Also, some of the dialogue could be rewritten to feel more real and dynamic, but these are minor criticisms.

The depth of the story is obvious, as is the author's commitment to produce some solid work. I am definitely going to re-read this and try some completely different tactics. I got what I suspect is the second best ending.

The chapter sleepy and the original first page has a bug. His watch is broken. Unless it is explicit that he took the watch from the dead guy on the train his watch should not function in chapter sleepy. Specifically when the alarm wakes him up at 6:00 am

Wow! Started this over four and a half hours ago and this is probably one of the most exciting tales I’ve gotten to participate in and was a great introduction to these interactive books. I enjoyed the beginning, as anyone would, I died a bit but went as normal before finding my wife and dying to infection in my wounds. It took me a while to figure out how to circumvent it, but eventually I did, redid it all and got to complete the map all the way through with only one mistake. This story was intriguing and kept me on my toes, a dark yet realistic interpretation of zombie apocalypse that, as they say near the beginning, actually lets you be smarter than the fools on TV. The countless pages, each hand-crafted let you go so many different ways, and while I wasn’t able to save my wife, I did save Jacob, my daughters and everyone at the school. I give this tale a 10/10, although admittedly not for everyone due to heavy gore. Honestly don’t have the willpower to do all that again anytime soon, but this is a story I will remember.

I was looking for something like this in Barnes n Noble, and decided to look for a choose your own adventure site. Came up on this, and am amazingly impressed by the author of this one.

It will take you a few days to weeks to see this all I think.

Love the game throughly, I ended the game with a score of 34587, played through 110 of 2,131 Pages and have proven to be a Rebuilder.

I need to replay the game again and find out what happens when I try other things. I played this game imagining myself as the character, and tried to avaoid conflict of any kind.

I really like the buildup in this story, but I do wish this had some pictures, at least a few here and there. If I was a person that didn't read much and was more into picture-based reader, I wouldn't consider this interesting at all. Plus, if you did add in a few pictures to this CYOA, I'm sure more people would be interested in this. But other than that, this CYOA is great. Hope you make more in the future.

Really Good. This is probably the best story game I've read so far.

I achieved the best ending, found Betaband, CovElite, simplesabley and ThisisBo. I also killed 7 zombies and 1 hellhound and I saved 60 people(including myself and I didn't get bitten), killed 0 people, and proved to be a rebuilder. My score was 38647.

The pacing is really good and there are SO MANY ENDINGS. Amazing story, well done.

oh man, this is one of those games where it is not just a story or game, but a mix. This is one of those mixes where it balances perfectly, with a mix of nearly all genres.

i think other people already said that this story is good and i guess i agree, but i dont like how each time you make a decision its only a different branch on how you will get to the same place and ending, only things added are minor plots along the way if you catch them

in my first playthrough i made it to the train and got contacted by the officer. i missed him but made it to my wife's house and exhausted all options so i got a good ending at least, so i tried to listen to his instructions and as i said it's only a minor plot about how you're in the prison but you're talked into escaping anyway for example

if there's something i missed that would lead to another major ending then i dont know, maybe my expectations are different but the 8/8 length had me thinking that way so who knows

Super fun story! I went through this with my family and everyone had a blast debating which options to pick. The choices aren't just picking which option is more/less risky, but entirely different directions for the plot to go down. There's a plethora of interesting locations, enemy types, and plots that can be easily missed, so I'd strongly recommend doing this multiple times.

I played this game a little bit back in middle school. I once again found this game after a memory of imagining the protagonist dead in the sewers, as well as a tumblr post asking if anyone could find it, followed by a quick lazy google search. it is only now that i complete this game, amazed at its quality. The only gripes i would have (grammar and spelling) are overshadowed by pure nostalgia and amazement at being able to find it. Play. This. Game. There is no reason not to (other than if your squeamish around written depictions of heavy gore, and a couple instances of animal death, or are in the same situation as greg right now).

Everything besides some endings being clearly abruptly cut compared to the best one, is really good and by far the best story of zombies I have the pleasure to find here so far.
The only other complain would be the same as everyone else as trying to make the rest of the survivors besides the ones in the end more useful/ valuable to the story.

This was literally one of the best things we have ever done. We are a married couple and found this to occupy us while on holiday, expecting it to be a funny half an hour adventure. This turned into a two and a half day long intense story that we were invested in every step of the way. The realism, writing and logical pathways of this blew our minds. Working together, we managed to almost get the golden ending, the only downside being that we became a carrier and got bit. We saved 60 people and our whole family, plus Jacob. Thank you so much for this awesome experience. You should seriously look into getting involved in games like those made by Telltale as your choices and pathways are far better than what they offer. 10/10.

I played this game way back in 2016 and absolutely LOVED it.I was so happy to find this game once more and realized that I had actually skipped a huge segment of the game (SPOILER: regarding the crazy scientist) so it was really fun. Has a 100% replayability value and is probably the best choose-your-adventure game I've ever played.

Really cool story! It is clearly very well thought out and had a lot of work put into it. Cool to see the character development of Greg throughout the story and see him (and yourself lol) get better at zombie survival tactics.
The world building for the zombies was quite interesting too! I don't want to say too much and spoil anything, but lots of interesting ideas and variety.

First “choose your story” I’ve read online and I was hooked! I will admit to backpaging a few times to carry on the story, but once I got to an ending I couldn’t really go back on (dying of an infection after finding and saving my wife) I decided to call it quits.

I'm sure plenty will have something to say about the intricacies of how complex and long this "Choose Your Story" is. However, I was most impressed by how real it felt. It gave me similar feeling to how I felt playing Undertale the first time, which was very impressive. All the emotions, quick choices to make and dialogue worked very well with the concept. As expected, there are other paths I didn't take. But I feel that I accomplished something after this journey. That's good. Definitely top notch, if I say so myself.

Now I'm usually not the person to look for in the comments section. Most of them are just a brief congrats or such. Some of them are even one or two sentences or a rating. That being said, This was absolutely amazing! I think it's even better than most of the movies out there.

The worldbuilding is so solid! I honestly did not think that a zombie survival game could go so deep! I was 100% expecting a game that went: Kill Zombie, Run, Shoot, Survive. This game is so much better than that. There is detail of the world around you, meaningful choices of where to go and what to do that can completely change the outcome of the story, and some actions even have consequences that aren't immediate! Now I can admit that my choice of games may have limited my experience, but it's been a log tie since I've played a game with actual prolonged consequences, And I've never seen it in a zombie game, but it's been done here brilliantly.

You even have the cause and the descriptions of the virus progression in-game! Sure, if you die you get an option to read that outside of the character's life, but your choices can lead you to figure it out on your own without having to die once.

The variations are amazing too! Instead of going the easy route and just using your basic run of the mill zombie, you added some brilliant mutations with an actual "scientific" explanation for some of them! The hellhounds, the giants, the banshees, it's all so great!

Wow, this was awesome! The detail that went into this was amazing! Somehow, I managed to escape the subways, recover at the police precinct, and save a school along with my family. Sadly, I did become a carrier to the virus, and ended up killing a little boy. My life would never be normal again, but I’m just thankful I survived. I can’t wait to find more stories like this one!

This was a super fun and engaging experience, I was entertained the entire time and captivated with how well it as written. The characters and world building were expertly detailed and had a lot of depth. Would HIGHLY recommend!

The only downside is the shakespearian weak female trope.
Aside from that it was well written; choices were fairly clear (though some could use more description to identify the sort of outcome your trying for [a problem with the bear grills netflix show where your choices are 'sane till they are taken out of the context you implied them']).
People aren't instantly all arsehats because dur apocolypse (such as with this war of mine the pc game).

This game was fun! I enjoyed the writing and the details, and had fun trying to get to the same place by different methods. It was cool that in some cases missing the "best" choice was not a dealbreaker for getting to a good ending. Nice writing and detail, and the character seemed to be allowed choices that that made sense, while also allowing freedom to have some fun along the way.

Dead Man Walking is what zombie survival media strives to be; truly an A tier experience.

This harsh world merely hours after the outbreak is a solid balance of unending undead, bleak outlook, and the horrors of an apocalypse beyond the zombies. That's not to say that the zombie encounters weren't nerve wracking in their own right!

Every encounter, from the shuffling hordes to the seemingly mundane instances, were well thought out scenario's where every choice you made meant life or death; As a zombie experience should be!

Our character got upset, he mourned, he screamed, this didn't feel like some meat puppet through which we enact our wildest zombie survival fantasies, but instead felt like a real person whose life depended on our insight, or lack there of. This really struck a good balance between the gameplay of choices, and a reason for which one could be immersed in the actual story.

The chances of a middle class office worker surviving an apocalypse, in the manner that our protagonist did, with everything stacked against him? Next to impossible. It would be uncritical of me to point this out, but I also recognize that, in most of these modern day hero stories, elements of a mundane protagonist have to be mixed in this "heroism", in such a way as to have a viable character to tell the story one wants to be told. Berka did well in this regard as well.

This was incredibly fun and well written story. The emotional beats were perfectly timed with the intensity and made for a wonderfully enjoyable experience.

This is my second time playing-through DMW. And I'm pleased to say it was just as enthralling an experience as when I had originally enjoyed it, nearly 5 years ago.

The writing is descriptive and evocative enough to paint a vivid (although usually grim) image of the post-apocalypse, while rarely ever waffling on for too long. Most if not all the information the text presents still feels succinct and pertinent to survival, which imbues the reading experience with a unique sense of tension, 'any missed detail could potentially be Greg's undoing!'

So all around, a fantastic interactive reading experience. I have no idea what the author is up to now, but I salute what must have been a monumental effort in creating this game, and wish them the very best in whatever creative endeavours they pursue in future.

This was great! At first I kept dying when I tried to rescue my wife, but I figured it out. After a couple more tries I got the best possible ending, and let me tell you, that was satisfying!

It's really fun!

It’s been a great journey. Lots of options to take and different paths of adventures. My only regret so far is the lack of sufficient dialogue which caused a barrier to characters building. The reason why I saved Jacob a couple of times from getting killed or turned into zombie is mostly because if it weren’t for him, there wouldn’t be any enough dialogue in my path. So that’s one thing to improve.

The story and how it’s told is great, no more than 3 typos in easily 10 pages worth of writing, only once was there a situation that had a missing option that would have been best out of all possible there, but that’s more of a personal preference than anything else. Thank you for putting what I expect to be a significant amount of time and effort into making this interactive story. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and believe I have improved my critical decision making some due to the unique situations that had to be dealt with in this. I hope you have a great day!

I must have had an incredibly boring first run as I did not run into anything other than typical zombies until I got into the suburbs. . . where I instantly died.

I absolutely love that I can play this one 100 times over and still get different results since my rather lengthy story only took up 140 pages or so.

However, some of the content is just gruelling to read. Details upon details of scenes and such when little actually happens. Tbh the detail overload at times really distracted from what was happening. And there were 3 or 4 sections where my only choice was "continue" and more scenery was explained instead of having actions.

However, I will definitely play this one over and over again to see where the hell hounds and demon zombies and ghouls are. This will be fun!

This game was... graphic. The story was extremely well written and developed, but this led to horrific death scenes and battles, Overall, great game, but would not suggest for under 16.

The struggle between maneuvering through the plot in a tactical manner, and acting as you theoretically would in a zombie situation, is real. Clearly, my desire to help people is too strong (as is my tendency to sneak past things rather than outright attack them).

I will definitely be giving it another go.

Good not bad

I thought I was doing well until I got to my house and was instantly killed by an intruder. The whole game seems to be leading you to your house to save your wife - when you do this you die. Seems a massive anti-climax.

This was really cool! A throwback to my childhood. I've been wanting to make something similar to this, but to try and use Natural Language Processing software to generate new bits of story and choices. It's unknown if technology is to that point yet but a couple software packages are coming pretty close. We will see what happens when I'm done experimenting with the code. Anyway, thanks for your effort it was a lot of fun!

this was amazing, the story line had me hooked, and the intense plot twists. I had the truck ending where you drive through the horde at 25 miles per hour. I thought i would make it, but the child and i got attacked. i was disappointed, but only at the fact that i had died. The entire story is absolutely amazing. It is an amazing story that i get to write as i go on. I recommend it to everyone who doesnt mind reading a bit.

Co.e what may, may we be the survivors, and hold on to the hope of a better day in faith, and keep a positive outlook.

Zombie apocalypse done right. The biggest issues in this genre, are the undead that can't die. Although this raises the stakes, it does nothing but prolong the story to a point where only a cure seems to be the solution. This makes the story restricted in the long run, as many authors run into the wall of "How will they survive now" further down the story. Here, the problem is solved by simply, making sense. A virus that zombifies a human and due to the lack of care to the host, it soon falls apart and dies. It's simple, and it works.

This was one of the first games I'd played as a teenager and god I still love it to hell. I remember replaying this one constantly in my spare time.

I have to say that the reviewers above summarize most of my points brilliantly, such as the vivid scenes and descriptions. One thing that should be praised above all else and what I'm going to talk about is about the way small insignificant-looking choices affect the ending and how this adds to the whole horror aspect.

When I first played the game, I constantly got the bad ending where the man in your house kills you. Of course, I was shocked and unbelievably frustrated. My adoptive son has just died and now I will get slaughtered by a squatter? This is such a shitty ending, there has to be a better one. So I replayed, but I constantly reached a bottleneck.

No matter how much I tried to go back and reverse some of my choices, my boy still has to die and me too. For a few months I never even knew that there was a bigger portion of the story left undiscovered by me. That's what drove the horror to me. No matter how much I try, the game didn't want to give me a better ending. It was unforgiving in that part. I have to live with that, with the memory that I let my fictitious wife and son down.

That was until I discovered that my small choice of not picking up the phone in the very beginning led to my demise. The fact that such a small act could turn the whole narrative upside down and change the whole pathway was amazing yet horrifying to me. Thus, in my 10th playthrough, my wife was saved, but my adoptive son still had to die. Long time I thought that was the best ending I could get.

Now that I think about it, I let him die several times and even knowing that my company would be the death of him, I still wanted to bring him along with every playthrough. It broke my heart to constantly say goodbye to him. His death wasn't preventable, it was a cruel world after all.

Boy was I wrong, because I never traveled to the police station and tgus never heard about the way the zombie virus worked. Once I did, I could finally warn my son about the darn water bottle and save his life.

The fact that the game is so unforgiving and happy to make you suffer for the bad choices you make, makes it such an enjoyable experience. The fact that all deaths are preventable and the fact that your ignorant choices are the reason that everyone died makes this game have a visceral sense of dread linfering in your mind every time you replay it.
At last, the fact that the happy ending is littered with years of tragedy, makes this story close to my heart.

Such an amazing story, it captured my full attention as soon as I hopped in. I didn't get the best ending but I sure will come back and try again. I also loved the way you added captured strong emotions. For example, finding out your wife was forced as well would make me explode. Lucky enough the main character of this story, Greg/Us, was able to control his own emotions. Had it been me I'd be in a storm that would be impossible to escape. I would absolutely love a part two to this game if there can be. We could have a Point of view from someone else or even something more.

This was some of the most satisfying shit I have ever read. This is my second time reading on this site and i can firmly say it is a euphoric experience to beat these storygames. This story was beautiful and the way it unfolded and the options given were absolutely incredible. Winning with the "Best possible outcome" made me stand up and start yelling at 1 AM. The pleasure in surviving was unmatched from any other game. I give it full marks.

I really enjoyed reading Dead Man Walking. I did not get as far as I hoped, but I will be returning to try my luck again.

The Story opens with in a tunnel after a subway wreck of which you were a passenger . You then must work your way out of the subway thru various obstacles.
I gave points for jumping into action almost immediately. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat wondering if I was going to be attacked by a zombie around every corner.
I gave points for the details provided for each option. If you read carefully, and think your choices thru, you have been given all you need to know for the correct choice. In my case I got impatient as I was excited to see what was going to happen next.
The fact that I am going to try again and again just to see what happens is big points in my book. In the past my desire to return to try again has been to find out what the ending is at the end of the story itself. In this case, I wish to return to yes get that ending, but more importantly to enjoy reading and playing this game.

Great story I've played through twice now! At work we post the story and options, and everyone votes on what to do next, making it a team wide choose your story game. We have lively debates and tons of fun tracking who chose the most options that killed us. Well done, berkazerka.

I really enjoyed your game it took me many tries to get through to the end and I am enjoying finding new endings and finding all of the other versions of the mutated zombies so far I have only found the banshee, hell hound, and the drooler I commend your work and ask that you make more games like this one because this one is very delightful to play.

Was my first time reading a choose your own adventure novel online, was a pretty good read, the only thing was that it felt it ended aburtly with you getting the sheriff and kids to all come with you into the wilderness and sorta felt like it ended all too soon, but other than that was a fun Read.

Truly an awesome experience. For once I felt that you could take logical decisions, like trying to sneak through instead of rushing somewhere anime-style and expect things to work out on their own. There is one thing that has been bugging my mind though. At some point in the begining, when you choose the 'family route' (ignoring the refuge altogether) the writer suggests that Greg was bitten at some point, even if he didn't have to fight any zombie in particular.

So good. I died a bazillion times and It was awesome this encouraged me to create a choose your own adventure too.

I love Zombie Apocalypse stuff, and this was an AWESOME take on the genre! Loads of really good, thought-provoking choices to pick from. Some of them really deep/moral choices that will leave you haunted after in a few cases.

This survival choose your own adventure game was one of the best I’ve played. I enjoyed it a lot. I am a survivalist myself so I had confidence going in that I would make the right choices but this game surprised me a bit and helped me see I still have a lot to do if I actually want to be prepared if something like this ever happens.

A really fun ride. I'd love to play it again and experience different endings.

It,s fun but not that fun

After reading all the (published) Storygames that this site has to offer, this was easily the one that I was most looking forward to rereading. Definitely my personal favorite, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were the favorite of plenty of other readers. Ever since I joined, I couldn't help but notice that this story has been in a constant battle for the number one spot on the Top Storygames list, and it's high ranking is well deserved. If it were up to me, Dead Man Walking would be locked in as #1, no contest.
I wouldn't expect a story with a million words to be nearly this polished, but I'm pleased to say that my expectations were beyond surpassed. Spelling and grammatical errors were minimal in spite of the story's length, which is both greatly appreciated and highly impressive. The abundance of choices was also lovely, although I did wind up dying from plenty of them- not that I'm complaining, it's a zombie apocalypse after all... (and I can just use the Go Back button).
I've noticed that nearly every single page has an obvious effort put in- there wasn't a dull moment while reading this. Even the death pages were packed full of detail, and I didn't mind them that much.
In terms of difficulty, Dead Man Walking is no cakewalk. Sure, it's hard. You're probably going to die the first time you play it, and probably several times after that. But dying always makes sense- the author never hurls anything unreasonable the reader's way. Dead Man Walking is difficult, but it's not unfair. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons I didn't mind dying was that it meant I had an opportunity to explore a different path that this incredible story has to offer.
This review wouldn't be worth much if I didn't offer any constructive criticism, but finding something wrong with this was a struggle and a half. If I did have to choose one thing that was less than perfect, it would be certain character interactions. The dialogue at times felt a bit awkward, and didn't flow quite as well as the rest of the story. Then again, finding a story or book that isn't guilty of the same issue would be a challenge, so I'm happy to overlook it.
Overall, this is a beautifully written piece of work, an easy 8/8, and a story I'd recommend to a friend in a heartbeat. I imagine this wasn't easy to write (and proofreading was probably even harder!) Thank you for your hard work, BerkaZerka. This story made my week a lot easier.

That went better than I expected! Killed one person, the prison dude holding the wife captive, and saved 60 people. Killed 87 normal zombies, while completely avoiding mutated ones. Played through 96 pages out of 2,131, which I must say is an insane amount of pages. Definitely wanna comeback to see if I can get a higher score sometime. Oh, and my score was 21,105. Was proven to be a survivalist. The amount of effort put into this is astonishing, and I love it.

I went through again to try out different paths for me to take, and I am very impressed with all the choices you could make. I managed to survive and save my wife, my kids, Jacob, and everyone in the school without getting bit. I even managed to kill the Banshee in the park. I highly recommend people play this if they get the chance.

this is an amazing game and spent hours playing and replaying to find out the different endings but i did get the best ending my first time playing and was extremely warmed. im curious though the game said it had over 2,000 and made me wonder what other endings there are and has anyone got to page 2000? whats it like?

I love how realistic it is, especially the details, but I do wish that women would be given more powerful tasks, instead of just getting to look after the children.

I forgot to mention in my last comment: I really appreciate the detail of everything. That way you can read it over, consider the options, and decide what the wisest choice is. It took me a couple of times, but I got to the best possible ending. Each time I played, I remembered things about the previous time I played, and what to avoid and what to do.
Honestly, everything had me on edge-of-seat suspense. The way a single mistake can get you killed, how you wonder whether the choice you made was wisest.
As I said in my previous comment, this is simply amazing.

I played this game several times, going to different routes to see what would happen. There are many, many ways that the story can go and many to how it can end. You can survive the apocalypse in different ways. What happens can also depend the people you save. What happens can also depend on previous choices.
The whole game is honestly amazing. The game can end with only 100 pages, or the full 2000. There is so many ways you can go, so many ways you can survive. You can play many times, taking different routes to see what will happen.
I can see why this is one of the best games. Great job!

Admittedly, I create an account here just to play this storygame which hook me up for several days. It has well thought out plot and engaging suspense, but my best possible ending is very disappointing. I honestly expect a cliffhanger with more "Resident Evil" flavour, not a Red Dawn direction. Why not work a conspiracy theory into your story? And perhaps allow the reader to choose among several pre-determined characters? That needs a lot of work, of course, but it will make one most addictive storygame.

I searched for these choose the ending stories after finding a old book from my childhood this was a fun and engaging story that took time to think through.GREAT WORK!

Well written story to play through and kept me entertained.

I enjoyed the storyline and thought it was interesting and well thought out. It was quite a bit longer than I expected which I enjoyed. One part bugged me a little - when he uses a tire spyder as a grappling hook. we've all seen those things... it being used as a grappling hook seemed far fetched. I just can't imagine it being able to hold on to anything in any way (grappling hooks have hooks, aren't just a cross- the spyder would more likely just slide off). The rest of the story was captivating and felt realistic. Also, not sure if it matters (I realize it's quite long) but I came across quite a few typos (mostly things like 'out' instead of 'our'). All in all though, I enjoyed it. Thanks!

Wow... just wow! This is the single most amazing game on here that I've played so far. :) With tons of choices, suspense, mystery, likeable characters, and fascinating backstory, this game is an 8/8! I definitely recommend taking some time to play this today. :)

Brilliant. The way that the zombie virus is explained (how it works and spreads) was one of the best explanations for how the zombie virus works that I've ever read. The wording and amount of choices you were able to choose was also exceptional, as well as the dialogue and personalities of all the characters.
Definitely one of my favorites, I'm not surprised to see it's one of the most popular stories.

An absolutely incredible story with believable characters and reasonable options.

The borderline pathetic decline of the Zombies during the end of the story was a welcome addition too, along with the explanation as to how many could be infected to begin with.

If I had to point out a gripe, it's that I only came across one "special" zombie and didn't even interact with it, I felt a sense that I was missing out on a gigantic part of the story (which the page counter proved) that could've been removed and merged with the best ending to diversify the tense scenes.

Overall though, it was a highly enjoyable experience and I am excited to see what the author will create next.

This is one of the best text games i played, it had a story that remind me of the walking dead. My only 2 complaints is one i don't know how to do the chapter thing and two, the little boy was gone when i saved the wife

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! There was great detail put into the backstory and reasonings, and I loved how the pros and cons of each choice were explained- and how there were many choices to stew over. Maybe I'm biased because I got the best ending first, but the fact that the story relied on logical thinking and had the MC choose a "mindset" (to be a hero or to save yourself?) was very interesting and took quite a bit of thinking! I highly recommend this game, especially to those who don't mind a bit of reading. Will likely replay in the future :)

Although you could see the massive effort put into this story, the proofreading clearly dwindled the further on I read, given the typos on every other page and eventually every page. There was also some repetitive language sprinkled throughout and at times tedious narrative to slog through to get to the more interesting plot points. All of that being said, I was hooked for a good portion of the beginning and the end, which is really what's most important.

Very complex, branching out story. I didn't get very far out my first time but really enjoyed it, gonna play again!

This was by far the best game I played. Great use of detail and keeping people intrested. I got the best ending; surviving without being bitten, saving 60 people including myself, and killing 93 zombies. Thanks to the author for giving me such an adventure.

It’s my fifth run through this game and in an actual account. I’ve certainly have gotten better endings in the past . But still,it’s the next best(Becky,I lost you).Seriously though,this game never fails to engross me every time I play it.One of the best games on this platform.

What this game lacked in art made up for with excellent and descriptive details which made the whole adventure seem real. +1.
I sincerely appreciated the diverse amount of possible choices I could make throughout the whole game which allowed me to choose had I been in that particular situation. +1 for game mechanics.
Story Line was excellent. Maye not unique but it was solid and executed very smoothly. +1.

Such a great time I had, and how engaged I felt! I found myself thinking about my choices and picking what I might actually do, because your story was so well written that I could feel like I was in it, rather than chasing a silly reward. I loved it and thank you for sharing with all us poor saps with a web browser! I never had choose your own growing up so it’s a new thing for me. Sort of like D&D, but you don’t have to know reliable people with similar interests, and I’m especially grateful as I don’t. :)

This whole story has really been an ordeal. I was just bored and never realized how immersive this story could end up being. Retrying over and over for the best possible ending was almost frustratingly addicting and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. If you don't mind the swearing, violence, and gruesome scenes obviously!

I liked it even though I died in the end, To tell you the truth I like anything to do with zombies, werewolf, vampire, or anything instesting.

I became inmersed. Really, I could take my eyes off the screen, it was a believable story that wasn’t about going and killing everyone, you had to make hard decisions and think about them.

the not so great: in some places the writing slips a bit (in terms of grammar and spelling). in other places it kind of gets a bit childishly sexist - i do not think on purpose, but maybe the writer is a bit young and therefore writes the characters as very 1 dimensional stereotypes.

the great: HOWEVER, for overall entertainment this hits the mark. i found myself getting sucked in to the overall story line and it really helped me pass the time. the pages of the story i encountered were pretty well thought out and there was enough suspense and twists and turns to keep me returning to finish the story.

This is a great story, and hard two. I had a great time playing it and would sure like another one by this author.

Small choices create different paths and you can get back to the original storyline later on. So overall it's really good. A few grammatical errors do not take away from the storyline or even the page. I am curious on how to make gameplay longer since it hasn't taken very long to succeed and survive in certain scenarios.

This story was all around fantastic.The premise of zombies decaying is very interesting.Although it had some grammar issues (can't think of one off the top of my head) there were very few.

I can't wait to rub this in my wife's face! She thinks I wouldn't last 10 minutes in a zombie apocalypse.

I got the best possible result, saved 5 people, and killed no one (aside from 9 zombies). Had a blast doing it-- and am eager to replay to see what could've happened on different routes (and who else I could meet/save).

One of the best choose your own adventure books I've ever read! Highly recommend it. Amazing action and love how well it is written. Got the best ending my second try, and loved how it tells you about the virus when you are done. Twenty stars out of ten.

This is a very fun choose your own adventure story that is enough to last you for hours and hours. Personally, it took me 14 tries to win, but thankfully once you get past the shelter for the living, it is really eazy, but still can give at least 2 more hours of fun adventuring. I truely recommend this one for all people 16+ because there are a couple cases of curse words and the like. Overall, this game was a great experience and worth $20 even though it is free. My thanks go to the creator for an awesome choose your own adventure story.

This was beautiful. An amazingly well done interactive story with an amazing story line and characters you can really empathize with. It was simply incredibly well done in every respect. Even the gore seemed almost necessary to the true feeling of the story. Now, I got the 'Very Best Ending', along with escaping with Jacob, and an entire school, and I had a blast with it. Very fun, and I definitely will be replaying it for more endings.

After achieving the best possible ending from hours and hours of story and tough decisions I am so glad I chose to spend my day on this, I loved every bit of the story and shared it all with my boyfriend as I progressed. The feeling at the end of this is that of closing a wonderful book after finishing the last line but this time knowing your choices are what led you there. A+

This was, without a doubt, one of the best stories (Choose your own OR regular) that I've read. I was taken on a Rollercoaster ride when I read this, the suspense you built was addicting and I had to replay the entire story more than once, I admit to going back to remake a few choices but it never took away from the whole of the story. This was wonderfully written and hopefully you'll continue to make more stories, and love them as much as I do.

I love how you end up being immune, but unbeknownst to you, carry the virus in your saliva! I teared up after the main character kisses his wife only for her to die and turn right in front of him. He was cursed with a kiss of death. Of course this is one of the many unexplored endings for me but this one is so far my favorite!

Wow, just wow. As with anything there are some issues that I have with this story but overall it was a fantastic experience and probably one of the best choose your own adventures ive had the privilege of playing.

Very entertaining, up to the point where it pulled me in, and away from the friends in my Xbox party, due to it being so captivating and very well written. The amount of descriptive detail that was put into the story not only makes it a great story, but also really help with choosing which decision you like best. The details in knowing exactly everything you're getting into is just great, and I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys this type of literature and entertainment.

I was THIS close to get the best possible ending when I left the game for a short break only to come back here a week later thinking there'd be more to it. How unbelievably close I was to get that ending with the built up suspense I made up for myself. Anyways, that was one of the best story game I have ever played

While there are numerous choices during the story, leading to a variety of endings, this story still seems somewhat linear in terms of the 'good endings'. I really enjoyed how previous choices had drastic effects on the game! This makes for entertaining and realistic material.

This game definitely tops most (especially in the horror genre) through its detailed character depth and personality.

My first run ended with me getting squashed by the fire escape and my second ended with me, the girls, and the 6 teens surviving at that campsite and it made me really happy to have saved these people. Props to the author,this was rad!

With the choices you make and things you say, the personality of THE survivor becomes you. Making it YOUR survivor. Of course, the "Go Back" button was useful a couple time. Good Job!

It took me so many tries just to get the best possible ending (score is above). In one try I died because I did not have the crowbar to open the red door.In another, I died because of the 100- foot propane tank with the Middle East Guy and the Spanish Conquistador.There are so many choices that affect the course of the story, and I love it! There were very few typos and no big continuity issues that I came across which, again, was very impressive to me. I found the main character to be quite dynamic and thoughtful. I also really enjoyed hunting for the cameos listed by the author!
I'm really struggling to think of some sort of criticism to try and be a little constructive but I quite genuinely cannot think of anything.
I got to the best ending on my second-ish try and I quite literally jumped for joy! ;P

This game was great. I got the best ending after a few trys and it was comlegley worth it. The characters make you really feel for them even if you couldn't help them. It's moderately had but also so rewarding if you get a good ending. :D

The story was really great, I felt really enthralled in the story and main character. You can tell so much work was put into this, I just wish a little more work went into editing. The play through I ended with had so many grammatical errors, run on sentences and sometimes the reading was just too much. How the hell did I die from a bacterial infection?

Not going to lie, this game seriously f*ked with my anxiety, but it was incredible, regardless! Immersive, clever, and intense. I died of a bacterial infection, so I'm going to replay and try to get further (this time, during the day...).

This is one of the best zombie survival stories I have ever played... What surprised me though was that, I chose what I would do and not what is right and got the best ending possible!

While I noticed a few grammatical errors, it was largely fine, far better than a lot of other stories I've seen. On a similar note, however, I noticed inconsistencies with the timeline. The particular instance I'm speaking of is [SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT] whenever Main Character is at the school, he states that he's seen "much worse out there", "give me nightmares for years to come, if I live that long," or however the line goes. He says it once on one page, then repeats it word for word on the page afterwards whenever the teens get rowdy again if you decide to help gather supplies instead of heading out immediately.

All and all, it was entertaining my first run through (I went the suburbia/family route), and I'd like to replay and do the city/police station route.

I personally did awful in this on my first run, but I've never been happy to get absolutely demolished. The game was so amazing and all the story had awesome details. I didn't even realize how big this actually was until it told me I did 56 pages out of 2200! Also all the different things like a scoring system and multiple typ of zombies makes this the best thing I've ever read

This is the first story-game I've read and I really enjoyed it. I didn't come across any gaps in logic. Though some of it could have been written better and the daughters better delevoped, I thought it was wonderful and well worth the time. Without spoiling it, I spent a long time trying to do something only to realise I'd wasted my time in a twist! I did end up with the best ending though, so I've made my peace with that.

This story is very well done, I recommend it fully. It's length is perfect, and on my first time playing, I got a good ending, but not the best. Few days later, I resumed playing, so I restarted, and just got the best ending. It took hours trying to analyze what I did wrong sometimes, as I stumbled into many that led into more dead ends, which require me to go so far back to pick A rather than B (in terms of choices). The choices you make in this story are surprisingly precise to impacting your outcome, unlike some few other stories I have read on here. There were moments in the story where it did not seem to add up, such as when you have that head injury that you somehow survive when you don't go get medical attention, and other instances that I can't remember exactly. My other criticism is that the dialogue is sometimes awkward. I think the zombie virus was well thought out, and not just like an amateur wrote this story. I do, however, wish that there were more involvement with survivors, and while there was a lot, I think there should be more people running around, more people going crazy, and more encounters in general. I say this because sometimes it seems like as if the story is passing more time than it is. When I wake up in that tunnel several hours after the outbreak, I think there should be plenty more of survivors and encounters with them. Otherwise, I think everything else was greatly crafted in the storyline and this is my favorite story on this site right now. Great job.

Brilliant. My first read through, 100 pages, no deaths/bites and best possible ending. Logical options and fab story.

Got nothing to say, absolutely mind-blowing. After my first few attempts in which in sure I died a lot, I finally got the best ending possible without getting bit. Surprising thing is I hardly back later except during the first lock code. I must say I give it a solid 8/8 is great. Personally I didn't find any fatal errors except two three grammatical errors here and there but otherwise it was perfect. So yeah you try this to see for yourself and remember the first lock is 9212 ;)

:) This game is so awesome I keep coming back thinking I might have missed survivors. It is so real you care about the character as he sets out to rescue his family and anyone else he finds along the way. There is more than one path to a good ending (or even the best possible ending). It is intelligently written, and you have to make good choices to survive. Of course, it’s still possible to get pretty far with a few insane choices... Even people who are not into zombie stuff can appreciate how well thought out this is.
Gripping, edge of your seat action [it needs to be made into a video game] it has everything... It is a masterpiece that runs seamlessly from beginning to end... impressive.

Having not read a ‘choose your own adventure’ type story in a while, I was very pleased with this work. The introduction with the temporary memory-loss was an interesting one, and I think that it allowed for me to slowly get to know the character. The writing was cohesive and it is definitely something I would recommend. My complements to the chef!

This is the MOST BEAUTIFUL Roleplay I have ever played, you put a ton of hard work into the science, story, and all around development, it actually reminds me of some of my projects, the difference between us, is you definitely have more time and patience. As I was walking through this, in the dark, at night, when everyone else was asleep, and playing it in one sitting as well, I experienced actual fear, and felt myself actually connecting with the character, I will definitely do this again sometime when I get more sleep :) one thing I might criticize is 1. The misspelling on some words and having to guess because you forgot a letter, but I completely understand that, it's a lot of typing after all, and 2. after Greg finds his wife, and the criminal, after shooting him with a shotgun (this is all based on my specific choices obviously), I'm just a little skeptical about that not attracting zombie attention from the loud noise, that's all. I definitely feel like you can contact and team up with companies like telltale and 2k and turning this into a video game, and I'm pretty sure it would be a best seller. You can even add more stuff! Also, I don't know if you already added this scenario, but maybe a cool option, is if you return with the army a little earlier than when the truck drives up to the camp, because they have seen how well you have done, they offer you a position in the army to semi-casually hunt down zombie survivors and kill them, and help establish the new order,which is definitely something all zombie movies lack, which is wrapping up and how life moves on from there. Maybe even (I think it's bethseda) the fallout creators can chip in their stellar graphics. Anyway, I'm rambling now. Keep up the amazing work!

BerkaZerka is a master storyteller, I’ve never seen such smooth transitions in a book, let alone a choose your own path story, that had this much intelligence in it. But, I think what sets it apart from other zombie stories is its realistically good ending. Positive endings always triumph over negative endings, (would you rather read what to do to end up in a bad situation a million times, or would you rather read what to do to get out of a bad situation a million times?) I love that you can save people in the story, I saved my family & everyone at the school, then I found out you can also save a boy at the boat place. I’m still wondering if there is anyone else that can be saved. The story has such impressive detail, I can almost imagine that a map of the place exists somewhere. (:

Great story. Somehow managed to get the BPE on my first playthrough, probably due to a combination of natural paranoia, playing it overly safe, and a long-standing love for zombie literature and film. Made it through in just under a hundred pages, but the story, and some of the alternate options I had to force myself not to take were so intriguing that I know for a fact I will be going back and replaying in different styles. Thanks again for the fantastic story.

This was the first story I played on this site, and really enjoyed it. Pretty tense at times, and I must have died 5 times. Thank you so much for putting in the time and effort to create such a good read.

It distracts me from my work, but it is for the better. Hahaha. On to my second run.

I rarely, like, RARELY play AND finish any game but this game made me play 'til the end. I even got to finish two endings (one where I waited out what would happen to me after getting bitten lmao yet I saved Jacob and the girls in the end... unfortunately I didn't reach my wife quick enough coz I went to the precinct lol I knew it wasn't the best idea when I chose that option but I was so curious + the best ending)-- I played this at 10pm I think??? but finished at 8:30am lol

I really loved how I don't just suddenly die whenever I choose the "wrong" option. I mean, I decided to play it with a half-hearted intention of surviving but the story, options and the thrills that came with it really sparked my interest. The text was brilliant and humorous as well. I loved the detail put into the narrations. It was really well-thought. Also, there were so many branches/scenes/options in the game and it awes me to no end.

All in all, I liked it a lot.

Super in-depth! Great story, and so many routes as well. I'll definitely be playing this more to get different endings.

A decent and well written story in which I played through most of the endings and paths. Only a couple little gripes with the game really.

1. after leaving the Subway tunnel you can check out some parking lot offices and find rotten food in the fridge (it has only been been 12 hours since the outbreak and not long in the tunnels)

2. There are a few things that happen that really affect the story without ever being clear or you are given the option to avoid (hard to mention without spoilers) but the best way to exlain would be you select an option either 1. ignore or 2. be cautious or 3. charge and fight.....all of those otion work but 2 of those then go on to do something else that later kills a character indirectly and there is no option to avoid, you are just told in text after selecting them that your character has done this thing that results in this, with the only option being to avoid the whole scenario for this not to happen. (vague I know) but there are often times you are faced with a wall of text after selecting a fairly vague option then find out your character has done about 10 things related to that that are unavoidable.

Well, after playing throught two considerably distinct routes and reciving the best possible ending with saving of 61 people and overall score of 50197, I must say that this is now my favorite story on that site. All decisions trully either logical or emotional but understandable, the story writing is extremely good and there is loads of content (for I only stumbled across about 10% of it, which showing how important decisions here actually is).

Hi, So I Did Have Alot of Fun With This, At First I Tried to Beat it. died a few times and Then Just Started Trying to Kill My Character as Quick as Possible. So This is a Fun Game to Pick Up and Just Play as the Story Can Get Pretty Immersive and After You Beat it You Can Just Challenge Yourself to Lose as quick as Possible. You Can Even Get Friends to Pick Choices by Just Listening to Each Page Once, Lots of Ideas and Fun Creative Ways to Play. It Earns a nice 9 / 10 From Me.

Let me start off by saying that this was a great, well-written novel game. The reading in itselfwas very gripping and I read it like I would have read a book that I did not want to put down. The only bad things I can say;*SPOILER* I played 81 pages and got the best possible ending, I saw that there were well over 2000 pages.While I realize that tons of these pages were pages leading down other paths I didnt choose, it made me wonder if I had decided to go "further" in the game, how well I would've done, because I was dissapointed that it ended so early, even though, like I said, I made it through 81 pages. Also, I wouldve loved to know what this black shadowy thing was that "Greg" literally mentioned on the first page. Is it death following him? Perhaps I'll play again and go a different route, but I dont want any of my people to die =(!

Really intense is all I can say!

Pretty good, immersive story. A few minor continuity flaws (most glaring: was told I'd lost my guns even though I'd never had any up to that point!). A handful of spelling/syntax errors, as if the story was dictated through some sort of voice recognition software, so there are a fair number of wrong words spelled correctly (example: 'tennis course' instead of the proper 'tennis courts'). A lot of pages with no options except to continue. Of course, lots of suspension of disbelief required, but all in all, a great zombie apocalypse story. It wasn't difficult to find the best ending from the context clues within the story. The characters do seem to actually want to survive! Also, the in story physics is pretty accurate as far as energetic events are concerned. A generally well thought out, highly satisfying & fun storygame, which I recommend, especially to anybody who enjoys the zombie apocalypse trope.

Worth every single second of reading, not only compelling but realistic. If you are a fan of choose your own adventure books, zombies, or anything involving survival period, this is something you’ll want to invest your time too. A hefty read, but very well done with many branching paths and options. Great work to the author, material like this deserves to be published.

This is like the fifth time I play and the first time I got past the subway. I had to go back a couple of times to actually survive for good and I finally finished the game after a couple of hours.
This is by far the best story I've read (played?) and I would (will) totally do it again just to try a different ending.
I only encountered three types of zombies and I'm sure that I can do better!

Pure fun. I spent an entire day on one story and there are so many different tales and endings that could've happened. I'm definitely going come back and take different options next play through.

Exciting and interesting but sooooooo long

On my second attempt (i got smushed after trying to escape an explosion) I managed to get the "best" ending. I will definitely be replaying this story to try and explore more of this world!!!!

It was a very engaging story and it kept me interested throughout the entire story. The only negative thing I would have to point out are the spelling errors, but there are so few that you don't notice.

Excellent story. It would fit right in almost any zombie apocalypse universe. The unique zombie types were great. I was too scared to try to challenge any, though. Maybe in another play through I will explore them further. The only thing I didn't really like was the two girls talking in one voice like a single entity, and the family in general didn't really seem like much other than basic "wife and kids" archetypes. But again, it's such a minor concern that I probably shouldn't even bother mentioning it.

Overall it was a fun read. I especially liked the way the story began, and the careful attention to detail in establishing the scenario.

This is definitely a story worth a second read through, and I suspect I will be doing another soon (hopefully to see what these other zombie types are all about, instead of running away from them every time like I did this play through).

Anyone know where to find ghouls and cannibal gaunts?

The only real issue I had with this story is it's length. I can really appreciate the measures taken to add realism and inspire true logic; This throws me off a bit. Some CYOA stories really focus on throwing a curveball at you, causing you to consider things you yourself commonly wouldn't by way of logic, but this one actually punishes you for looking at it through that aspect.

For instance, Helping others is something we would feel instinctively, but the obvious risk to that makes it an inherently poor choice in most survival situations- especially those with an invariably fatal outcome.

For that reason, when I shed the idea of being a hero and instead focused on surviving, I was able to make it through.

Nicely made. This is the first story I actually completed and I think this whole thing turned out pretty good. The characters and their dialogue needs some adjustments like some of the other reviewers mentioned but other than that it was a very enjoyable experience.

This was the best game of this type that I have ever played. The writing was perfect! The description was thorough and rich. I am going to play this game quite a few more times. Please make another!

Love the game, I found that the main character often thought exactly what I would in the same situation.

The absolute only problem I had, was that after getting to the school and deciding to help everyone live in the campsite, they totally forgot about the SUV full of supplies.

I absolutely loved it! It was this story that convinced me to make an account. Truth be told, I was starting to think it wasn't possible to die, but the results proved me wrong. I really didn't know, and only found out when I reached the end. This story should be published, I'd tell everyone to buy it! I got survivalist, about 24455 points. Kept holding my breath all throughout the plot and didn't even realize each time. Simply great. I look forward to exploring the site, thank you creator!

Great story! This is my first attempt at playing a choose your own adventure game and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was an amazing story and the first ever Chose Your Own Path story i have ever done. It was amazing. Just everything was great about it.

Very interesting. I found myself being drawn into the story surprisingly quickly and not being able to tear myself away. The author has done a terrific job.

this is such a great game, i got best ending with no bites, saving all of my family, saving 11 additional people and having only one encounter with a special zombie.(it was from a distance though), on my first try! i totally recommend this for anyone over the age of 12.

I have only one real criticism (beyond the odd typo which is totally forgivable), Greg's reaction to the doctor at the police precinct. While I was sat here happily collaborating with the man (Greg was bitten but not dead, something worth investigating) the text was *telling* me how much of an irredeemable monster the doctor was, in Greg's own thoughts no less. Not saying he was right or "good", but that there's an argument to be made for the potential necessity of that work and I felt very disconnected from Greg despite being right there with him for pretty much the whole rest of the ride.

Good game 31400, a little easy, and didnt last long enough i expected it too be much longer.

English is not my mother tongue but I think I managed to understand every passage and I even learnt a lot of new words. I think the writer did a great job. I found the story very inspiring and compelling and I really appreciated the great effort he put in making everything coherent. GREAT story. I've played it 4 or 5 times just to get to different endings. The story is exciting, thrilling, and really keeps your attention. I feel like I really survived the zombie apocalypse.

Very fun! There is certainly a trial-and-error aspect, as some choices lead to unexpected deaths, but the detail is good, the story is good, and the main character/his motivation is compelling. Lots of RPG elements, lots of choices.

This was, if not the best, one of the best experiences I've had with any story-based games whatsoever. I usually never really read often unless it's important to me, but this story, with its extraordinary details and almost lively characters, really drived me to go to the end.

It's a story you can't miss out on, and the details at the end just round it all together.

(Btw, I loved what the author did with the Protease Inhibitors, understandable how that one character survived long enough, very hilarious.)

Way better than Walking Dead! It's my first time reading a story like this, and it went well. I want to go back and see how to encounter all the types of zombies.

This story was very well written. It had me intrigued and wanting for more. I was playing from 7 pm and couldn't stop playing until i was done (2 : 25 am).

This game is amazing, and is down right revaluationary in the sheer amount of branching paths it provides, however, if there is one thing that would have made this even better, it would be more determinent characters that could be part of a group you could create prior the end-game. Other than that though it's even better than telltales walking dead!

At certain points i did have to go back and retrace my steps especially when you die from the brain infection when you see your wife. The plot was amazing when i did figure out how to do it. glad too see his whole family didn't die!

Summer break just hit and I live in Florida. For the past few weeks I've dealt with boredom from all of the rain. Just happened to be watching youtube and found out that their are books like these you can make your own fate. Definitely a way to get around boredom I'm sure if I wasn't really bored I would have made a better rating than a 5. Great work and amazing writing.

I have just finished playing through one of many story lines and am completely blown away by the amount of detail and work was put into this story. I wont spoil anything for anyone who wishes to play through the story but I have been left completely speech less. I managed to get the second best ending of the game, making a simple mistake early on, and am now left feeling happy that I was able to apply my survivor knowledge to keep myself going yet am still left feeling down and upset due to the actions required to get to where I am. I'm not proud of all my actions but that is the thrill of the game. The test of your humanity the test of your knowledge and luck all wrapped up in a truly scary and realistic story. I personally am in love with this story and plan to return and play through some of the other story line in the future.

I did find however that many of the story point where very cliché and I was able to predict the main bulk of the story very early on which possible lead me to pick the better options. I was also very annoyed at certain points where an important event would happen and I had no power of the situation. This didn't happen often but when a bad event happens and you cant stop it, it almost takes away the element of choice which is vital to these stories. This didn't make to much of a negative impact on the story but I would consider this factor when going into the story. At times it could be considered realistic, to not have full control, but in the sense I'm talking about (SPOLIER) the boy, in feel like it should have been a choice to give him a drink rather than a forced action. Like I say, not much of a problem but its something worth noting.

All in all I am in love with this story and have already recommended it to all my friends who like these types of drama and action. I highly recommend this and hope that all new players are able to truly feel the emotion and power of this apocalypse like I have.

When you are in the little room between the two tunnels and you have the choice to choose between the axe and the crowbar.

The axe option makes it seem like you can go up the stairs with the axe and then come back down and swap with the crowbar for use later. That ended up with me taking a very different approach to the whole thing.

First story I read on this site. Soon to read many more I did not see any loopholes in the plot, no grammar mistakes, or logic breaks.

This Choose Your Story is purely magic. I believe that with little editing and formatting, that this story could be published and become a bestseller. Thank you for creating such fantastic stories (there are multiple possibilities) with such realism and with the existing multitude of possibilities

It was really amazing to read and play! The story itself was very smooth. The grammar was perfect, and the way you can really paint the scene is something not all writers can do, and for that I congratulate you.

The best thing I found about this is that there are a LOT of choices, each branching off into a different story. I can't seem to find any other path besides the subway > police > home path though, shame. (I did branch it off to police > hospital > church, but that hardly matters)

One advice I highly recommend is to avoid situations where you can get bitten. AVOID. Without a bite you'll have a much better time with everyone, possibly including the police section of the game.

Overall this is a great game. It can be replayed a whole lot of times. The story, though long, is easily remembered so you don't have to drag your eyes across the screen reading old details.

I can see why this has been so highly favored among all the storygames on this sire ^_^

This story kept me guessing throughout the whole thing and I was genially hard pressed with everything I did. It gives you a lot of ways to deal with the problems that are thrown at you. It was hard to tell when the game was railroading me to a certain story arch which I loved and was only able to see it once I went through and tried different routes. My heart strings were pulled in this story as well and almost made me cry at some of the things I had to do. The realism in the story is unmatched in descriptions, actions, and scenarios. I love this work of art and I don't know if this site is still active to a lot of people or not, but it sadness me to see this awesome story wither. Or maybe the sites doing well and maybe I should do more reading, I don't know. What I do know is, every, single, page is worth the read and will without a doubt spark a love for these kinds of story's.

I enjoyed this for sure. It was the first I tried on this site and it has made me wanting more. The story was well thought out, and there are so many alternatives that you could play this through many times. I also liked how logic was the survivalists friend, but that there were more daredevil like actions available.

Now that was cool... I did kill anyone that got in the way if m e saving my family, but I stayed away from zombies, trusted nothing, and thrived. The hardest part was the code to the door... hint... try the two codes right before the bottom one... and that is the hardest part of the game that I just gave you the pass to. Use the back arrow if you die! This game was awesome!

I finished it all and lived. I am proud to say I saved 58 people. The first I'm I did it I was a zombi happy meal. XD

I enjoyed it, though there are a few grammatical issues and odd word replacements most likely caused by spell checker swaps. I was rather impressed with the excellent choices that the story provided and found them to fit well into the realistic feel of the story.

I may have died in minutes, but I still think it was a pretty kickass performance for an accountant. From what little of the story, I survived through, the writing seemed crisp and unobtrusive, the setting descriptions were excellent, and you did a fantastic job of creating choices that a real person would make in a crisis, equally logical consequences, and a masterful tone of panic. I finished with the 2nd best ending surviving with Laura, Jessica, Kate, and Jacob, surprising, seeing as I wasn't following any strict rules and was just going with what seemed to be the safest options while still progressing.
Generally, don't make much noise and think and check out the area before you choose what to do.
The descriptions are good enough to let you imagine your surroundings yet keep it simple enough that you don't get bored reading them. One of the best stories I have played in terms of variety, realism, and decisions!

Wow- i played it before but it was boring and i got a terrible score (even though i survived)
but i tried again and it was 3-4 times as long and 5 times as enjoyable which is why i rated 8/8 my second time round. I did die with hundreds of zombies on the kill count but I had to backtrack that sadly :(.

Great choices

I quite enjoyed the abundance of decisions. It made me consider my options as if I were Greg. I also liked that it was challenging, but rational. You were only told so much and left to your own devices. In this way you had a direction to go, but no one to hold your hand.

You could likely improve upon Greg's reactions and personal thoughts. While they were generally clear and concise he came off as to quick to adapt. Within the first few pages I was already bashing someone's skull in with a cement block.

It managed to keep my attention for the whole day, even when fatigue and boredom set in. While I didn't get the best end I'll likely give it another play. For my first CYS it's was great.

i loved this adventure book and have done only 150 pages. it's so nerve racking and i love doing the combinations. but one part i didn't like is when i started shooting all the zombies and i ran out of ammo when i had traded for hundreds of rounds for each gun. lol. i will continue to finish the book.

Very interested to go through the other story arcs after saving my family and a school full of kids. Still managed to moe down over 100 zed in the process though.

Wow, this game is amazing. There's tons of options. I went back and decided to take some of the worse options, and I find it great how if you find Jacob in the elevator shaft, then you only meet a tomcat in the boat club. Though, I did find a bug. Shouldn't the sheriff shoot you if you have an obvious bite (like on your neck?).

This is just a very good game. The length of the story as well as it's quality are HUGE. After 30+ trial-and-error, it's finally done.

Very good I killed the boy going against every moral in me because he could have gotten me killed. I stayed stealthy and didn't see anything other than zombies and the crazy lady. Amazing story simple clean ending nothing spectacular but a good way to show its over and you have won.

I found it very interesting, however, every time I did the pushpin lock thing from the bathroom it didn't work, I tried every single combination but nothing seemed to work, so I backtracked and got eaten by zombies. Otherwise I would say the story was well told, I replayed about 9 times, it was good.

I don't know about the replay value (as I don't like thinking about parallel universes where some peeps would be alive and some others dead), and I got the "best oossible ending" so I guess I am fine with this :') Thank you for this read!

I was not expecting to be hooked so intensely from the start, but through the Authors highly descriptive and detailed writing, it's almost impossible to stop reading, simply after the first paragraph.

The amount of visual images you're able to create in your mind through the stories detailed writing, makes it seem as if you're watching a movie in your mind; However, the choices you make throughout the story determine where you go, where you end up, whether you live or die, reunite with your family or never know what truly happens to them.

I made it out of the subway unharmed, heading into the direction of my home. I made it to my house, reuniting with my wife and headed to the girls school. There I reunited my whole family and convinced 59 lives to join me in heading to the mountains to create a community, in which we thrived until the end of the apocolypse. I only had to kill 7 zombies and one human. Two humans, if you count the poor teenager I failed to protect and had to put out of his misery. Mind you, all of this within only 73 pages out of the possible 2100 plus pages.

I spent hours trying to get the best possible ending and I have to say that every second was worth it. So well written and interesting to play through again and again. 10/10.

Fun little CYOA. Only messed up a few times. Not really sure what the mysterious black creature in the dreams was though. Not sure it was it explained. I managed to get the best ending possible.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your story. I haven't read a choose your own adventure since I was a kid.
Of course I don't remember them being so chilling. It will take some time to get over the fact that I got killed and left a young boy all alone in a zombie appocolypse lol.I had a really great time though. Can't wait to see what other stories you have, or will have.

This was the best game I ever played

Dead Man Walking (Zombie Survival) has a simple concept and a pretty straightforward story, but the amount of choice given and the thought put into each option makes this a very unique experience. As I played through I enjoyed the critical thinking that each situation required as well as gauging the risks versus the possible rewards of outcomes. While I have only played through once and achieved the best ending, there is definitely a lot of replayability and I'm looking forward to the many other adventures I can have with the story in the future.

Pretty good, but not a lot of variety in the different endings. Lots of cool deaths, but the only survival endings i found were in the campground and the precinct. Obviously one could save certain people, but this was trivial.

This is the first ever story I've read in this site and I'm not disappointed! This got me all tensed and thinking over decisions over and over. Even though I survived, I think I would immediately die in real life! I enjoyed the choices even as simple as weaponry. It took me a good 5 minutes debating on the first switch (fire ax or crowbar/ultimately going with the crowbar for utility). I survived by staying at the precinct and got a score of 7355. Nice job at making this amazing game! 8/8

This was very well done, the decisions were hard to make because the options were reasonable and depended on preemptive thought. Liked how you weren't punished for being a risk taker with some more bad-ass options working out. Overall the whole story was well paced and would give anybody a couple hours of enjoyment, hopefully with a happy ending. I personally scored something abouts 20, 005 and I have two regrets the major one being I never did get to use that second Molotov cocktail ;D

So far this is the best Zombie survival story i have seen on here. It was full of amazing twists and turns and I liked that none of the options throughout the game had dead ends. I hope to see another one like this from you and can't wait to see what you come up with. The grammar was also good throughout the story and had tons of different options. I also liked that you had cameos from different people on this website and I thought that was pretty creative. I also like that you told the story behind the main character and included other characters such as Jacob and the tomboy survivor.

Amazing!! I played twice and survived both times with really good endings ... **SPOILERS AHEAD** The first one I went to the police camp where I survived, but I didn't save my family. The second one was the best where I saved my family, the kid Jacob and the whole school people too. **SPOILERS OFF** As I said, amazing game and congratulations to the author because it was so well written, brilliant. I will miss this story and probably play this again sometime. You all can be sure it is worth playing and lots of fun!!:)

This really was one of the best "Choose Your Story" games out there; it had a awesome plotline, and I even got the best ending possible! I'm amazed at the level of diction and complexity of this story; overall an amazing story. 10/10.

The best zombie survival ingeraftive story I have seen in a long time! Th choices were logical, made sense, and had predictable outcomes most of the times. My only complaint, if any, is that the whole head wound that your character starts with is never really "treated" apart from been binded. One would think more serious consequences would result from it, but oh well.

I am a survivor of this pretty awesome experience that is quite a bit better than most CYOA zombie stories on the web! It was well written and actually made me a slight bit afraid to choose what I thought was right on account that I am certain I came close to death more than once in this story. Very well done.

A truly enjoyable game. I was really sad though hen i ended killing my wife. But that sadness left when i went back in time and decided to use my companion as a test dummy. to think i've only read 10% of the whole possible story... really makes me not feel bothered to play it again. BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN THIS IS NOT AN AMAZING STORY! it truly did bring upon me enlightenment.

I found this game you made to both have a unique and incredible story, but also a choosing system that makes the players feel as if they really do have control over Greg's life. The story was pretty original, as far as the zombie apocalypse genre goes, and it was miraculously detailed. 5/5. I hope to see more from you!

What can I say. I love zombies, and I love how instead of doubting everyone, this story lets you benefit from trusting and helping them.

The Best End was very satisfying, and every Dead End had good reason behind it, as opposed to "Oh shit, a zombie appeared out of nowhere and you died without having a choice to fight back!" in other storygames I've read in this category. This is the perfect storygame for me, and I definitely recommend it.

Now, time to attempt a Genocide route :)

This is one of, if not the best, text adventure/interactive story that I've ever played. Each gory detail painted into the background of so many choices all wonderfully described creates a masterpiece of an apocalypse scenario. The author is brilliant in his wording, and in all of his possible storylines. I would love to see more games like this!

[SPOILERS] Wow... just, wow... An amazing story line mixed in with believable and down to earth answers to predicaments. It is sad to say that I died from a simple bacterial infection, and that Jacob died at my own hands (After he zombified in the garage ;-;). I had thought that I would be ok after Jacobs death, Seeing as though it lead to me finding my wife, but it was all taken away, at the hands of the simplest bacteria. I like to take solace in the fact that I did not find out what had happened to my daughters, which would most likely lead to more heartbreak. This story gets an 100/10 in my book!

I was really enthralled with this, I started reading roughly around 11pm and I'm writing this at 5am. From a narrative stand point the story is pretty straight forward and most if not all the characters and scenarios that happen are pretty damn realistic. It really does a good job if making you fear your actions, I found myself genuinely scared of certain sections (That Cannibal Gaunt generally made me shudder) and other sections had me cringey and wincing, fight that hell hound made me cringe and wince just at how insanely well written and detailed it was. Kudos to the author. My only qualm with it would be the lack of variety in the zombies, while i did read that it said that 1 in 1000 will mutate it still would have been nice to encounter some of these other zombies I never had a chance to meet, epically with that kill tally at the end of each read, it really makes you want to find and kill at least one of each to truly feel like a zombie killing bad ass, nonetheless I enjoyed this game, good read.

Well i wouldn't say its good and nor bad, but you could put pictures for visual preferences. and also make an option of self reading story line where the computer reads it to you.

Very well written and a lot of fun! Some minor spelling and grammatical errors but nothing that took me out of the story. Lots of choices at key moments makes for a great ride!

This is the first story I've read on the site...and I'm just amazed. Knowing that it's 2000 pages, I've played one ending to find out there's still much much more!

Breaking it down: The Amazing, Good, Bad, Ugly

Ugly: Not much I can say here.

Bad: To me, the dialogue and the characters seem a bit weak. When you meet characters, (at least in my playthrough) I feel that they don't seem to matter as much since we don't know much of their story, or why they're motivated to survive. An example of this weak characterization is Tomboy Survivor Girl. (Don't want to spoil to much.) An example of better charactization (In my opinion) is from the Bus driver. For the dialogue, it's not that it's terrible it's just generic. Nothing really stands out to me in what the characters have said.

Good:
The story writing. Immediately you're plunged into a world where the author is able to give you - not only an image - but a smell, taste, sound, and taste of everything that's going on. This allows you to really grasp what the character is living out in this world. Being a Zombie Survival game, it is crucial that these elements are well written since you need to use these to
make your decisions.

However, regarding the "painting the picture", I feel at times that there are some details that don't need to included and it can be lengthy if you can already grasp what is going on. So while it's good to thoroughly describe your scenes, sometimes letting the reader fill in blanks with some breadcrumbs is just enough.

Amazing: Okay, content. It's 2000 pages. 2000! I haven't written anything in my lifetime that is that long. 2000 pages of content. The story that keeps on telling. It is like "travelling in a desert" because you can't seem to see the end.

The game itself. Wow. It's really everything I'd want out of a choose your own adventure game. Every item that you find is in preparation for what might come in the future. Every move you make can leave you in grave danger for another risky feat. You simply can't ignore any stray structures or people behind, you have to decide if you want to interact with things or if it's to risky. Exploring in this game is a thing. I can't believe that I'm EXPLORING a written text story because there are so many choices, many paths, etc.

I want to praise the author on giving some choices the weight they deserve. In this story, taking info of your inventory, your state of health, and the threat of what's around you makes every flip of the page a fun immersive game!

(Regarding what's above, I haven't read all 2000 pages so maybe my judgement may be off. Considering this is my first comment, I may also may be rating this to high or low, but this is overall what I felt!)

What a great game! I safely managed to make it to the best possible ending without being bit, and am about to go through it again to see how many zombies I can kill this time. Very fun and well written.

It was pretty good up until I took a risk and ended up dying.

Personally I love games such as this one, but it's much to easy to get hurt/bitten and you don't have a lot of chances to fix that problem in the very beginning with your head gash and all. One other things that your character is not coztomizeable in any way i mean skills and such which really postpones the experenice.

Pick stealth .

I was absolutely astonished on how many pages and selections there were, also the final point screen is truly amazing. I'm a writer myself and have never seen a better peice of work, not even from published New Your Times Bestsellers. 9.5/10

Great game, over 1 and a half hours of gameplay and an excellent story

What an amazing experience of story-telling survival. I love the attention to realism and detail, and most of all challenging sandbox of choices you get to make provided with consequences associated. There is a question, will this adventure story well be expanded? Are their plans that this could possibly developed into being an immersive graphical text-adventure game?

Has a few places where you'd expect other options but they aren't provided. Still, the writing's good.
