Survive The Zombies ditches the strong narrative focus that Dead Man Walking opted for and instead weaves a more humorous and lighthearted take on the zombie formula. With simple choices and an even simpler protagonist (right down to protagonist profession), STZ is an enjoyable read that doesn't take itself too seriously and is a great literary timekiller, especially if you haven't found all of the choices and routes.

Surprisingly, there are more than the first glance would make it seem. I played this game for years and just today discovered you can rescue bob AND get the cure, discovering the best ending only today. Of course, I never sat down and tried this hard until now, but it goes to show this is not a game to avoid, even if you don't prefer this tone in the genre.

I found most of the humor landed, especially when a couple of looters simply wanted my cat, or when I pushed my injured best friend down the street in a wheelbarrow. Of course, I never once even considered giving my cat away, but things like this made me belly chuckle and made the overall experience a pleasant read, a surprising one on the first playthrough.

It all isn't without flaws, though. Perhaps because of the strong fixation on keeping with its own tone, the game can be a little dull and encounters can be almost jarringly short and meaningless. The witty narration and self-aware commentary do little to distract from the clear lack of challenge or real threat to your character. Being able to survive Phase One using only common sense and not taking any risks or inserting yourself into danger and chaos makes sense, but the author sort of implies it will get harder as the game and, thus, apocalypse march on, but no, it honestly, really never does. A humorous take on such a genre requires still some level of encroaching threat or ever-present, looming danger, but not even the zombies or various pockets of humans you can run into ever fulfill this role. Its less of an easy game and more of just an enjoyable, funny, smartly-written but nonetheless slightly disappointing tale set in an almost actionless apocalypse.

Regardless of these medium-level critiques, the story and overall experience fortunately are enough to make up for these things, but maybe only because the vast majority of jokes and funny situations stick.

Nonetheless, while it fails to go toe to toe with any well-written, serious take on the zombie story like Berka's Dead Man Walking, Survive The Zombies reigns supreme regardless in its own division, and it certainly worth your time.

I have played many storygames that involved zombies, but this game in particular was pretty enjoyable. The writing was good, with little errors and there was never a dull moment with what was happening. I find it impressive how you were able to combine some rather good humor in a situation where everyone in the world is becoming undead cannibals with a tense atmosphere, but you did a rather awesome job at doing so.

Honestly, this was quite entertaining and I liked that the answers go certain situations weren't obvious or easy as this makes this fun to play over again and test out different decisions and paths.

There's plenty here that this game gets right, and that certainly makes this quite an enjoyable story with good replay value.

Hmm, I was ready for something a bit more like DMW, but this was also pretty interesting. It was pretty lighthearted, really simple but kind of a meme version of the zombie apocalypse. I guess I accidentally killed Bob. I don't really care. The guy didn't really do anything for me then threw himself off a flight of stairs. Still would've liked to save him though. Sorry buddy.

Rather than thinking for the player, paint a picture and let us explore the world and think for ourselves with less input of what you think of our actions. The old man in a bunker with a cure was kind of silly, I understand you chose that because it's a quick way to wrap up a short story. If you intended a longer story you wouldn't use such a plot. I didn't have an emotional attachment to anything or enjoy any characters. Good job on being creative and asking for feedback. Good luck to ya.

Pretty short and sweet. I got the Good Helicopter ending with Bob. It was a pretty funny story, not at all taking itself seriously, which contrasts well with the other zombie story on this website. Since it's short and there seems to be a phase I missed, I will replay this and see how it goes!

It's a fun short story

I played it twice, because the first time I wasn't happy with my score. I believe the first ending was good, because I found the cure, eventhough I lost my life. However, the score I was given was bad... I didn't understand why. Still, I liked it very much. For me it's an 8 out of 10.

I found this game looking for a different one, and despite it being pretty old now (10 years I think) it’s still pretty entertaining and fun. Though I’ve only played through it once so far (and got a “good” ending rather quickly), I plan on playing a few more times after this, and would definitely recommend others to play it at least once.

It was funny and the humor was pretty constant, and what Ive read of it so far reminded me a lot of some of the “zombie comedy” movies I’ve seen, and again (at risk of sounding like a broken record) it was pretty funny.

I'll preface this comment by saying that I've only played this game once. Maybe some of the other choices would give a drastically different experience, but it seems that one choice seems to pigeonhole you into a bunch of choices you don't want to make, choices you wouldn't have made if you'd have known. For instance ***SPOILER ALERT*** I chose to go see Bob, my best friend thinking he's the closest and we could go to the store together. Instead of that, suddenly I'm forced to do drugs and two months later, we never thought about getting supplies. Somehow, the intro didn't mention that Bob was a clumsy and drug-addled fool that's somehow a little bit better than you at everything yet only holds you back :/

I like it a lot, not having the choice to do anything after smoking some weed is unfortunate tho because I would smoke the joint and explain the situation immediately to Bob lmao.

Enjoyed this game. Short pages and plain style made for very quick play. The characters remained shallow and the story took some quick twists and turns that made it appear a bit unpredictable. Certainly this is not a deep work of art, but for quick fun, it worked well.

I absolutely loved this game. (I have to say, I did end up trying to go back to get a better ending. I never found the best score though.) I would recommend this game to anyone (except for our younger tots in the world) :)

This was one of the best zombie games i have played i really enjoyed it and it was cool to be the zombie king i would enjoy if you made another game.

After rereading the initial screen. Took about 4 tries to get the best ending.

I gotta say it was not half bad. Although my first try I got possibly the best ending, I did enjoy the feel of suspense as I had to ponder my choices and see whether or not I'd live or die. The game was also realistic in a sense. I doubt I would happen upon a government official out of the blue, but I am glad the choices available were in the realm of common sense.

+6/10 for art/detail. Good details but not the most detailed I have read.

it was entirely subjective and seemingly rigged to what u thought would entail survival. there are many ways to survive things and i don't think your endings had enough variables. for example, when leaving town, james easily could have scouted for more supplies. i doubt he would have just sat there, knowing he was running low on bullets, and just gave up. i realize this was made in 2012 and it's now 2018, but c'mon.

A really good game though I'd expect a bit more options and some more backround stories to make the game a bit more entertaining and longer. I know you want the characters to be average but c'mon, family members still matters somehow and some more action like actually encountering some zombie would have given the story more feels and intensity, like a real zombie apocalypseyou know.

Well, checked that the last time I played this game was 9/24/2016 and I didn't realize how much I took for granted... a game with a good ending and one achievement that is 'Savior of Mankind.' It brings me to tears knowing that there is still hope despite a grim zombie infested future, and of course i am grateful for you to have written such a wonderful story that reminds me of salvation. Amen brother!

As a game, it's pretty fun. As a story, it could use more detail and the characters could really be fleshed out more. There were a decent amount of choices, but most were pretty obvious. I think I found every ending. The secret ending was especially great, but I kind of wish it hadn't just ended there. The secret ending would have been a great spot to actually go into a phase four that you could only do if you'd taken that path. All in all, it's a pretty fun game, but I just wish there was more to it.

This is a very nice game, just make sure to check the spelling again. It's probably just a typo but it is when you wrote " you family " instead of " your family". Other than that, very fun as it is scientifically possible trough gene mutation and some other things.

There should be more choices and different genders to work with. Other wise its pretty good but you should consider more realistic events. Not everyone would drop their gun just because you're holding someone hostage. And you don't always find somewhere to hide.

I thought the infection was only passed through bodily fluids. Why did a scratch kill me?

Could of been longer and more indepth but the bones are there. I got the good rating half reading it but that's more due to multitasking. I really liked it and would play more if you ever make more chapters or atleast a version with more variations and critical choices, thank you.

the humor was very similar to mine, so i, understandably, enjoyed it. it took me a while, but I managed to get all the endings. great job!

It's a long adventuring story I think (although i didn't survive til the end) but it really engages me in it. Being as the character (i remembered bob, olive, mayor and things but i just forgot who i am) i do get the feeling on living in a places full of zoombies and how to try surviving from the situation (yeah, i died at the store anyway).It is an interesting and a fun book to read and i may try to restart it to survive haha.

The story reminds us about sympathy. We are asked to choose if we are going to help the zombie. the main character hesitated to make decision whether to offer help or not in a dangerous situation. It reflects humanity on what shall we consider between our own interest or public interest. Although the character died eventually, it is not a happy ending, the sacrifice make some contribution on how to cure the virus.

I loved it,It took all day just to read all of it with every ending,every death,every item,and tried all the options available. This is truly the kind of choose your own adventure games i want to see and have fun reading!

I think, when it asks if you would like to survive on your own or stay with Bob, that there should be another option where you can kill him, take his plan, and his supplies. That's what I would've done, and frankly, I'm an amazing person.

It's good, but I feel like the options are a bit limiting. How do you survive the zombie apocalypse: dig a crap ton of holes for the zombies to fall into. You don't need special resources or fancy equipment, just a few construction workers and simple traps.

Ended up doing drugs during the zombie apocalypse and came up with a cure for the world yay. I liked this story because it wasn't one of those over the top serious stories but it was still mildly realistic. Good read.

To get to secret ending instead of helping Olive find the cure, you choose to leave and not help with the cure, then go join the human camp, agree to be checked, tell the truth that you stayed at underground complex, agree to help them attack the complex, do not warn Olive and let them inside, then the rest will automatically lead you to that ending

Well, so far I only lasted till day one, but it has been okay so far. There are some obvious spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes. I think you need to involve the audience a bit more. Don't describe what's happening, but actually write the story as if it were happening. For example, you said "it said on the news that there was a new virus" or something. What would better this would be if you were to actually write like a short snippet from the news report for example. Like, "BREAKING NEWS; virus (name of virus) has appeared out of no where. Scientists don't know what it is. Some people think it's related to the attacks in (name a few cities)...". Something like that. Do you see what I mean? It just adds more context to the story. But I hope it goes well for you. Left my email.

Pretty good. Though the author tries too hard to be funny and just comed off as snide sometimes. For example:
"You decide to be a momma's boy and go home to your parents' house."

Or, y'know. I just had genuine concern for the wellfare of my family.

Things like that kinda make you scratch your head a bit, but overall it's pretty good.

5/8 one thing I hate almost as much as incomplete games is games that mock or belittle the reader. This one does a bit of the second one. I still played however and there are a lot of choices though usually 2 out of the 3 given the author complains because you picked those choices. Anyways not the worst not the best at least its complete and choices are there and thats a good thing

This was a pretty good game, and I appreciate the effort that was put into it, but I feel like there should be more actual zombie survival. Sure, there was that one time with that zombie at 7/11, but I feel like the endings shouldn't come that easily. Maybe you should think about extending the story to include some real zombie plot action!

Sure I didn't survive the zombies but I saved FUCKING HUMANKIND I don't think THATS BAD! But overall I liked it and I like the couple walking dead refrences you threw in there too??! Also you could've checked it over cause there were a lot of mistakes but it was a great game 7/10

In The other Zombie apocalypse story, the passages are incredibly long and some people *cough* myself *cough* do not read it all. With this, it was fun, entertaining (like the other) and easy to follow! GREAT JOB

All good, but one part.
The part where you have to choose to run past the zombie, or use a chair, or use a garbage can. I choose the garbage can, but got scratched and was met by the inevitable death ending. I hardly believe why using the chair would be safer than a garbage can... both items can be long lengthwise. Heck, my garbage bin can fit a grown adult inside of it.

You should add an option to use the baseball bat as an item instead, to bash its head open and go past it. Or at least throw the cat at it.

The zombie manual that you get for no apparent reason. I have the actual one in real life and it's surprisingly good. I also wanted to see every single ending and it took half an hour. But a really amazing game.

I really enjoyed it but I thought it ended too quickly having done the right things (or what I thought was right). I thought (this is my opinion) that if you didn't fuck up you could play longer. I guess that's a back hand compliment because I really did enjoy it. I also love your sarcasm, the jokes and stuff were funny

Now, try to give more choices, more options, and definitely more risk. An apocalypse is all about risk after all. It's a live or die situation and if you live, it will definitely be difficult beyond your wildest night mares. Good start though. Keep working at it and you'll get better.

The poor grammar made the story very difficult to enjoy at times. For this reason I gave it a five, but I can see it being vastly improved. Exploring the various choices and achievements was fun, though the storyline often felt a bit rushed. All in all, a solid read.

This was well written and I commend the fact that not every encounter ended in conflict as are common with other similar narratives, however I believe that it should take itself slightly more seriously and make the zombies a larger threat.

I don't think I've laughed harder in any other story on this site. It was very entertaining, especially smoking weed with Bob. My only complaints are that instead of giving us a fact sheet about how the character is like, try getting his personality, fitness etc. In the story on day 0. And also you kept reminding us it was a story by saying "But there were no zombies that day because it was day 0." That's all though, loved it, and hope to see a sequel, but it probably won't be as good.

I liked the Secret Ending, was awesome all around. Once you're in charge, who needs humans??? Then again... after so long (decades after secret ending) where then does the food source supply zombie sustenance? Haha. But no it was a great way to spend my time. I am a very visual reader/writer. As a constructive criticism I'd like to add that more gross details would be a nice touch and should help give it a more gorey feel. Loved the zombie humor though! Kudos.

Hello, this game was very fun. I like the style of it and but i felt as if it lacked adventure/story. For example possibly add more to the game. Introduce new characters, a more in-depth plot. Don't push it, make it sensible but with a taste of adventure. You did a great job so far, I can't wait to see what else you produce.

Not bad, decent humour aimed at young adults, and a lot of choice, with non-linear paths. However, I would suggest trying to implement the item system into your next story - it is fairly basic in this one. Still a decent story however. 6/8.

I liked it but It seemed too bad that there were complications in my ending, I got a heroic achievment though. With this I believe there should be more options. I chose a path that seemed like what I would do if there was ever a situation. I would have also stuck to helping humanity because one cannot live in a world without purpose. I believe that the ultimate sacrifice should be a great ending not a bad ending. The other options should involve finding a family. Otherwise this was a good choose your own and I plan to wright some choos your owns too.

It was VERY short, for one. Secondly you sound jaded with the zombie tropes-- and if that's the case then use some innovation to spice things up, rather than the generic zombie nonsense. Add some interesting characters and twists and turns. A good start, but leaves a lot to be desired

As my second read on this site, the first being another zombie story called "dead man walking" I am let down a bit by the time and effort put into this. I do like the inventory on screen, that was interesting. Story was decent, but short and there weren't many choices to make. Hm, pretty fun. It was over for me pretty soon though. I'd say the story was just a bit too generic and there wasn't any real tension to survive but I'll go take a different path and see if that changes my mind

That was awesome! I don't like zombies, (why did I choose this game? )but I LOVED this game! So awesome. I got the excellent ending, who knew I knew so much about zombies? It was a good story. The only part I didn't get was why the man exploded, but nobody else? Either way, great story! I rated it 7.

It's a good game but sometimes there aren't so many choices and I would like it to be a bit longer since it's a bit short.
it would also be great to add stats for your character wich can affect your succes with some options. Maby also giving the option for 1 or 2 items to start with. I also liked that you got a gift when you completed the first chapter but maby it's better to let people find the cat themself. Also it would be nice if you would need the cat (Or another item) in order to be able to make the choice like getting your cat some food for you (Use the stats to have a pesentage how much the cat likes you rising or lowering by choices you can make when you have a cat). I think with those few things you can make your games great.

i actually enjoyed the game. i think that it should be a bit more realistic though, finding the mayors wife in a abandoned 711?? also having a missle hit.your house?? and then conviently find a safe bunker with a man who has the cure for mankind?? i think you have somthing good here. you should think about making a second one with a bit more bare bones survival questions and choices, also maybe try to be more serouis considering the fact its the zombie apocalypse but still throw some funny stuff in ther once in a while, i give it a 4.8/10 simply because it wasent as realistic i think it should have been. but otherwise great job definitely consider making a second

This is probably how a zombie survival game SHOULD be done - pretty much no random deaths, with every choice grounded in common sense so that the players don't feel cheated by something completely unpredictable that blindsides them. Admittedly, real life probably wouldn't work this way, but it makes for a helluva more satisfying game.

I liked knowing ahead of time what kind of endings were possible as well, because it made the game worth replaying until I could uncover all of the endings. The achievements were also fun to earn.

This is a great story. It also makes you feel good about yourself! First time I died but backed out then died creating a cure to save the world and then I got the best ending the next time!

This game is so good, i literally got hooked on it for hours. I got every ending except for the best ending until now. I won't tell you exactly how to get the best ending, but all you need to do is be a best friend and the savior of mankind. Being just the savior of mankind will get you the excellent ending.

Really solid game, I couldn't find a use for the zombie survival guide, but otherwise it was really solid. I went back through and found all of the endings, but I wish there was a way to see what the achievements were for.

Another waste of time. I understand that the creators are not getting paid for this but wow it seems like someone was bored and put it together in 3 hrs. Ground 0 was awesome, the only worthwhile thing I found here.

Phase One and Two are really easy BUT I suffered in Phase three however Good Ending and I survived :)

I had the "decent" ending, and 2 achivements, No-one left behind, and best friends.

The game was alright. There was too much to read. Some of the options were kinda stupid. Zombies would come out during the day.

I died because 3 zombies attacked me. I think i would be able to kill them with my baseball bat or safely run away.

Anyways, it's an okay game, but DeadFrontier Outbreak 1 and 2 (another similar "choose your story" zombie game) is much better.

It was a fun thing to do i got the decent ending...Bob died i really like zombie stories and this story was well written, made me chuckle a couple of times, made me really think on what to do and it made me want to try out all the endings. 8/10 ^-^

This… This is not what I was hoping for. It's not serious. At all. The grammar is pretty bad and the choices are quite redundant, especially in cases where you lovely have one choice. Hilarious at some parts, but you should really include chapters/save points. What if your at the end of the game, a few frames from winning, when suddenly you die? That would really make people mad. (Luckily I died at the heli on the hospital and didn't want to choke myself)

Wow, this was really good, and I got a 'bad' ending. I'll be playing again to hopefully get a better one. The story had just enough explanation that I knew what was going on but it didn't drag on and on. The best zombie game I've played on this site so far.
