General notes:
Despite covering a literal apocalypse, most of this game’s pathes are surprisingly intimate, following a personal struggle that only later becomes important to the survival of humanity. The epilogues help with this, showing how the decisions the narrator has made have affected both his own personal turf and the world at large.
This is a game about commitment. Once you’re on one of the major five pathes, you need to stick to the branch’s theme in order to survive.
Lastly, I want to note how expansive the world manages to feel. The inclusion of recurring elements across multiple pathes, particularly GZS, makes everything feel connected, and makes the narrator’s actions really seem significant. Many similar storygames would have a hard time tying together four different stories set in the same world, but this game walks the line, allowing each one to tell its own tale without feeling disjointed.

Specific notes:
-The intro works well at setting the scene, the tone, and adding a bit of characterization. The clicking through of TV channels shows that the world is in catastrophe, but it’s a very apathetic kind of catastrophe. People have lots of loud opinions, but no real power, and are unceremoniously glossed over. It also shows the main character’s more personal apathy about the rest of the world.
-“Mysterious epidemic in China”… ha ha ha.
-The GZS receptionist is delightfully irritating. For a character who appears only in a single scene, she’s very memorable, and her presence and attitudes cast a long shadow over the entire community shelter arc, and to a lesser extent, the special shelter arc. Her combination of cheerfulness and condesention strikes a delicate and very amusing balance.
-Though GZS obviously has its own agenda, we never learn much more about them. This works well, ultimately this isn’t GZS’s story. It also works well in setting the uneasy calm-before-the-storm tone of the community shelter branch.
-I appreciate the attention devoted to the endings where you die in the blast. It’d be easy enough to say “u ded lol”, but these endings make the story fuller.
-It can be tough to potray an antisocial character in a likeable way, but Ground Zero does this well, particularly in the shelter arc. Being a grouchy tech hermit with a gun is always fun. This character trait is both a unique strength and a weakness; it helps you by meaning you’re one of the few people who actually knows how to repair things, but it can also get you lynched if you don’t want to play ball.
-The way in which GZS selects its participants is taken to its logical conclusion. I like that the narrator becomes important to shelter politics because he actually read the instruction manual.
-Ron’s character is handled well; he’s a nice enough guy, but he just isn’t leadership material. He’s effectively used to set up the plot with Elliot and Nina.
-Fun detail that Todd and Charles knew exactly where the narrator was going. I like the way their characterization and increase in competence happens slowly. Leon is handled well too, his distrust of the narrator is logical, as is his increase in loyalty once the narrator gives him the pistol.
-Speaking of pistol-giving, that's a powerful moment. It cements the narrator's transition from loner to protector.
-There’s a good bit of interconnectedness between the branches, with Ashtown and the Combine showing up in multiple pathes, and many of the soldiers from the military group appearing in the wasteland path. Details like this really make the world feel fleshed out.
-The community shelter epilogue is hilarious, and brings the story full circle, which is always a good way to handle an ending.
-Arizona, lol.
-It’s interesting to see the way Nina’s character develops on different branches. The main branch is probably the best case scenario for her; she becomes a just and competent leader. On the other pathes, however, she’s alternatively weak or vengeful, suggesting that she really wasn’t that stable a person at all, and couldn’t handle her relationship issues. Luckily enough, this never comes to bite the protagonist in the rear, she’s worked out her issues by then. Still, I don’t respect her as much as I do some of the other characters.
-The “time will tell” and “Time tells that you’ve allied with a completely ruthless sociopathic mad man” is a nice transition, made me laugh.
-The special shelter arc is one beautiful clusterfuck. 6 misanthropes walk into a survival tin can made of duct tape and health & safety violations, one leaves.
-I find it amusing that the shelter kicks you out for not socializing enough.
-Six characters is just the right amount for this arc, any more and it might have gotten confusing, any less and there wouldn’t have been enough room for a real mystery.
-If you choose to indulge your paranoia and vendetta about shadow, it goes predictably. Dying alone and insane is a best case scenario here, and that’s only after fucking over everyone else. It’s a fitting outcome.
-This path has a wide variety of possible outcomes, more than any of the others. It reminds me a bit of paradise violated in its structure, while there is a clear main path and ending, the side branches have a lot of attention devoted to them and you can achieve a wide variety of good/neutral endings.
-The endings where you leave the shelter are intriguing, it would be interesting to see what happens next, but of course that’s outside the scope of the story.
-I thought the death endings in the special shelter branch were particularly well written.
-Eliza’s character is done well. Her presence in the beginning of the branch, and in this branch’s alternate pathes is subtle, but lays the groundwork for her eventual future role. Seeing her develop a personality beyond the programming was a pleasant and intriguing surprise.
-This is the most subtle and quiet path, and as such, has the most subtle epilogue. Like the community shelter path, the epilogue comes full circle by connecting back to GZS. Ultimately the GZS representatives reach no firm conclusions about your life in the shelter, which works well symbollically with the tone of this path.
-I’m torn on the relationship between Becky and the narrator. She’s too young for their relationship to really feel legitimate; when the relationship emphasizes the narrator as a mentor and protector figure rather than a partner, it seems to have more depth to it. This may well be the point, Becky’s father issues are important to the plot, and the evolution of her relationship with the narrator parallels her development.
-Miranda’s an absolute psycopath. While the other villains in this story kind of make sense in context, she’s willing to brutally murder four other people just for the chance to… talk in private with Becky? Wild. Still, I guess there could be no more logical way to have a real villain on this path. There’s no legitimate reason any of the characters have to genuinely wish each other harm.
-It’s too bad that you can’t really save any of the characters in this path. Casey, Shadow, and Mark pretty much die no matter what you do.
-Chris’s avatar being in all the pictures is amusing. I know it's a coincidence since this was published in 2007, but it's still funny.
-Shooting Billy and Martha is just the start of things in the wasteland path. The extent to which the killing horrifies and shocks the narrator is a good way of setting up the contrast between who he currently is and who he later becomes.
-The theme of this path is one of brutality, and all of its endings serve to emphasize this. Choosing compassion towards the family who comes to the store ultimately helps no one.
-A constant question storygrame writers need to ask themselves is whether to prioritize player agency or narrative theme. EndMaster’s games tend to lean on the side of narrative theme, but none more so than the wasteland branch. As the player, you have pretty much zero say in the outcome of your actions, and any attempt to deviate from the story laid out is met with death. I usually find games of this nature annoying, but the writing here is good enough that it’s forgivable, and it’s made clear in the final scene that the lack of player choice is sort of the point of this path. I can respect the attention and care that went into crafting this story, even if it isn’t necessarily fun to play.
-Interestingly, the narrator of this branch feels like one of those one-off crazy people you’d run into as a brief obstacle in some other story.
-Nice that Vivica gets to kill the narrator in one ending.
-Ironic, but thematically fitting, that Johnathan’s shelter opens to you.
-Despite this being my least favorite path to play, the wasteland’s ending is excellent. It perfectly caps off the storyline, and raises intriguing questions about the world. It feels like a comment on the player rather than the narrator, who has played all the way through this path of debauchery merely because it was there.
-GZS strikes again with its anti-radiation drug. I think the fact that we never learn much about the real inner going-ons of the company only helps its impact on the story.
-I like the callback to the elevator designs on the city path.
-There’s something campy about the city path, in a fun way. The references to this help.
-It’s interesting the narrator starts out sort of out of the loop, and it takes time for him to integrate himself into the city’s political structure.
-I find it interesting that the narrator is thrust into a leadership role across all the pathes. He’s not that good of a leader, nor does he ever claim to be, but he’s just so surrounded by incompetence on all sides that people naturally put him in power. It’s an interesting take on the character.
-The messenger rat system is cool.
-Owen’s return is both well foreshadowed and narratively appropriate.
-Lisa serves her narrative role well. I don’t particularly like her, what with her mutant superiority and controlling nature over her son, but she drives the story in the right direction, and is used well to introduce conflict for the narrator. The political nature of her relationship with the narrator is an interesting contrast to his other relationships.
-The godly names of the mutants are an interesting styllistic choice.
-Marina choosing to save the narrator because he’s “different” seems a little contrived. Though I suppose he is the only one present who hasn’t completely given up on survival.
-There’s an interesting parallel between the Colonel’s distrust of both the GZS computers and the plot with the cybernetics.
-On the atomic alliance path, it’s interesting to see all the different groups that have sprung up. We learn more about the cyborgs, and meet a group of cultists.
-Marina feels a little underdeveloped. She initially seemed like a love interest that could hold her own against the narrator while still not being a jerk, but she never really got enough screen time to see what direction she was going in.
-Alex’s role on the atomic alliance path is interesting. He’s obviously extremely, unstable, but seems oddly well-meaning given what we know of his actions on other pathes. I like that his character is more than just a crazy mad scientist.
-Alex calling the narrator out on his maintaining control is also interesting. Though the narrator is honest in his lack of ambition, he does wind up in a leadership role time after time. He’s clearly not as antisocial or ambitionless as he likes to think of himself.
-I like Vivica. She has a cool head.
-The atomic alliance arc is probably my favorite. It’s the most optimistic, and it feels like the player has the most control over what happens.
-I missed the mini-path on the atomic alliance route on my first read-through, so this was a pleasant surprise. I liked the branching nature of this segment, allowing a variety of good bad and neutral endings.
-It was nice to see Marina’s character a little more fleshed out in this arc.
-I like that you can get a positive ending while still allowing

Grammar: Generally good.
Mastery of Language:
There are less issues with sentence structure in this story than in Paradise Violated, which is appreciated. There are still a few here and there, but there’s a definite improvement.

Branching:
This game follows the traditional style of having several major pathes and sticking to them pretty tightly. It has some more branching in areas than some of his later works, and positive or neutral non-epilogue endings can still be achieved at regular points.

Player Options/fair choice:
Could be better, but not without sacrificing some of the narrative elements. It’s fine.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
Lil 16 year old Gryphon stumbled innocently into the wasteland path on the first playthrough and was forever scarred by the experience. I went back and read all the other pathes and then had a much better time.

CONCLUSION: Fun and innovative, this game takes an oft-done concept and brings lots of new ideas to it.

Ground Zero is one of the stories that I read the first time I found this site and the one that impressed me the most at the time. It might even be considered the reason I kept returning to this site every few months rather than forgetting about it after closing the tab. However, I did not read it again until now. I have to say, it's left an impression on me once more.

The story is very engaging throughout. The events leading up to the nuclear attack are not revealed in detail, but they don't need to be. Why date the story with the villainous country of the week when the results are the same? The main character's life is drastically changed forever.
Every choice will lead you to a different path (save in one spot in the community shelter path in which there are two ways to get the same path). Even choices that may initially appear to be something that will lead to an early death ending often lead to an entirely new path. Depending on the path you choose, you can become a very different person in more ways than one, but the main character himself's basic personality is always consistent.
There was one ending in particular that stuck out in my memory, and I see why again now. The ending when you leave the shelter with Eliza has no epilogue, and it likely did not end happily, but I suppose I am more of a sucker for that kind of emotionally touching ending than I thought. I also liked the poisoned ending and movie ending, as unofficial endings go. No ending left me unsatisfied and feeling ripped-off, but they all left me eagerly clicking the back button in order to read more wonderful endings.
Nothing is perfect, not even Ground Zero. A quick proofreading to remove some repeated phrases and such would have given this story more polish, but the errors are infrequent and never interfered with readability.
Ground Zero is a wonderful and entertaining post-apocalyptic adventure and a very valuable addition to CYS. For anyone looking for an epic story different from the usual fantasy, an excellent example of branching, a post-nuclear apocalyptic tale, or just an exciting and beautifully written story that will keep him engaged for quite a while, I recommend this storygame.
If you're one of those suckers who reads reviews before he reads stories, stop. Don't read anymore reviews. This is time you could spend reading Ground Zero.

I've made it no secret on this site in my earlier years that I absolutely love this story. But back then I didn't look at things critically, if I liked something then it was perfect and anyone who shit on it was a fuckwit, so last night I decided to read through the four (well, five counting an unofficial one) major paths and see if my nostalgia held up. I've gotta say, it does.

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS A BUNCH OF SPOILERS

Let's start with the writing and the story. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic games, and this doesn't disappoint with its tale of the story of one man and his life after nuclear detonation. Depending on just a single choice (which branches out into another choice depending on what you choose, but still), you can take five different paths to five wildly different endings, and all the other endings on the way. Par the course, there's a few typos and grammar mistakes, but those don't really affect the overall quality of the story.

Aside from the minor errors, the writing is top notch and has a unique flare in its visceral style. EndMaster knows how to write extremely well without sounding like a snobby scholar-type, but rather like a regular old Joe that just so happened to major in creative writing. I especially liked the hints to the other paths you could've taken, IE mentions of the Combine in the public shelter, mutant, and Wasteland Bastard paths, when one path has you join what would eventually become the Combine (and being able to squash the Combine before they have the chance to become the tyrants they are), while the unofficial 'Wasteland Bastard' path ends with you finding a way into an unused private shelter when, if you read through a small branch early on in the path, you would've discovered it belonged to a family you meet (whereas you killed them before they could tell you in the main path).

I touched on it above but didn't really dig too deep into it, but this story has so many branches it puts a redwood to shame. Tons of choices, tons of branches, (be they quick 'you chose the wrong choice, time to die' or 'continue your story for quite a bit longer') and I enjoyed the fact that not all the choices that lead to an end game link on the next page are deaths and give a sense of the adventure continuing after that. One thing I will say is that I was disappointed in the lack of a 'road warrior' path, that is being an unaffiliated wandering adventurer, and the lack of a path which allowed you to join the cyborg faction whose name escapes me at the moment. Still, the paths provided were pretty damn sweet, so these are more things I would've liked to see than things that the game needs.

And now, gushing time.

Dude, wasn't it sweet when you just shoot that bastard Elliot in the public shelter path? Just be like, "fuck you motherfucker, you ain't gonna do some dystopia shit on my watch!"
Man, it was so fucking cool when you throw Owen off the roof when you meet him again in the mutant path, haha, that's what you get for going insane because I threw you out of your shelter you fucktard!
Wasn't it the bomb when you killed that bastard Alex in the soldier path? I made the mistake of forgiving you once shitlicker, I ain't forgiving you again!

And now here are my favorite paths:

3. Private Shelter path (I'm a sucker for human-robot/AI romances, and this one didn't disappoint. Plus it proves End can still do a compelling story without including a shitload of characters. The branch where you interact with the other people in the shelters also proved to be an interesting little character-driven thriller, which mostly took place across computer screens, which is also a telling achievement of his storytelling ability)
2. Soldier path (IMHO the 'best' path for the story, as you squash the Combine and the cyborg peeps without them getting the chance to get too bad, you restore a sense of order and government to the wasteland, and the epilogue featuring your descendant telling a story about your exploits in a bar was perfect)
1. Wasteland Bastard (Oh. My. God. This is the cruelest, most demented, and sickening path in the story... And I LOVE IT. You REALLY get to feel like a depraved bastard in this path, and then you have it all catch up to you and, depending on your interpretation, kill yourself out of guilt or be killed by a mutant bounty hunter. In the end it shows that you, the player, did this just to see how fucked up you could get, and that's exactly the same reason the protagonist did it)

So, in the end, is it the flawless masterwork I thought it was? No. But overall, this story, though flawed, is still a masterpiece of interactive fiction and my favorite story out of all of EndMaster's works. Forever and always, this will be an 8/8 for me.

Play it. Just...play it. Then you shall see.

Great story dude appreciate it. However, why the fuck cant i kill everyone without consequences? You use alot of fallout imagery within your story, yet you dont allow anyone to kill without remorse smh. couldve expanded on the bad decision mechanic.

Having reached Epilogue 4, I can see that this story must have a vast amount of branching options. It's very well written, and manages to develop the story and characters without getting bogged down in needless detail. Suffice to say I will be returning to play out the other scenarios.

I LOVED the reader and Nina's romance, it's something the post-apocalyptic genre of games should have more of.

I played this when I was a kid, and I still remember it years later now that I'm an adult. If that isn't a big endorsement I don't know what is.

This game was incredible! Great way to waste a couple hours while I am supposed to be doing something else. I really enjoyed the descriptive writing, and enjoyed that I didn't always have to make the perfect choice to have the story work out.

SPOILER: I liked that my early choice on the type of shelter provided different and divergent stories instead of flowing back into a single narrative.

Loved it. The fallout references and inspiration kept me entertained

Ground Zero is an interesting game. One so easily to feel conflicted about on the terms of length versus content.

A testament to why a better story is always better than a pointlessly long word-stuffed trot, a sentiment not shared by my previous community but gladly shared and celebrated here, Ground Zero contains two very distinct and well-written shelter scenarios to play through. Both contain believable and thought-out characters, and both follow the clear themes of trust and survival in a post-apocalypse.

EndMaster, like in most his stories, does not fill his execution with overdone drama or idiotic characters, too. Some you like or are mildly intrigued about, others you are suspicious of and weary towards. End's simple yet effective prose and approach once again work well together and really help bring this whole piece together. No matter what ending you get or path you choose, you are always interested in going back and finding out more about certain characters or choices.

The Special Shelter scenario was definitely my favorite. Although my below-average Joe character randomly got hacking powers in a couple scenes, I chalked it up the the instruction manual being that well-written, apparently, and pressed on, realizing the nice bit of branching, here. I got to select between two people for a friend, or at least to chat with, and both were fairly interesting on their own right. But then when things take a turn for the worse, and one of us is apparently cut from the grid to die in the dark, End does a great job of setting up the threat to everyone, mainly you, and crafts some truly creepy bits of scenery when its sleuthing time, doubting everyone you interact with, thinking it could be any of of them, maybe even the person you have a pathetic little virtual crush on, or, better yet, the very AI that was designed and installed to protect you...maybe just a little too much?

All those things swam around in my head like hungry goldfish in a bowl as I slowly but surely become more enthralled in this brief experience than I ever once anticipated. EndMaster doesn't just write another hilarious yet strangely enjoyable bit of fiction, here, he floated lifelessly into the room merely to flex his skeletal writing muscles for no reason other than to show off then leave.

Such is the way of the proclaimed IF reaper, and this game is yet another testament as to why he is what he is.

Fantastic story. Love how the endings are actually different rather than being very slightly different (this person lived instead of dying, this place is better off than it would have been, etc). I only disliked how overexaggerated or overdone some parts are (the Colonel, Elliot, Alex, etc). Still, it was an awesome read.

Super fun loved the atmosphere and the unique people :)

I played this story originally almost a decade and a half ago now, and it still stands the test of time (a test that you yourself will have to endure in the containing scenarios).

Despite some very minor typos and the loss of some of the original images (which I'm guessing were lost by the image host), I have yet to ever encounter a better written CYOA story, and I doubt I ever will. I would love another one in the same vein.

If you pick the right choices it will definitely be one of the best stories you play.

I clicked on an rss feed on the IFDB website, and, found this. now, I really enjoyed it, however, what happens to you and, beccy? is there a part2? overall, the story was great.

This one of my favorite stories on the site. I noticed a few grammar issues, but they didn't detract from the story.

An involved story about a nuke going off that yields Fallout-style effects. Paths are deep and satisfyingly complex, varied and you have control as a player (i.e. you're not constantly facepalming at how inadequate your own character is in doing things). It isn't narrated in a depressed fashion, which is a pitfall of some apocalyptic stories that can drag the atmosphere. There are images throughout the story as well, which are nice and add to the feel. As with all long stories I've read by EndMaster so far, there are slips in the technical spelling/grammar details now and then, but it's all backseat to the story. Great stuff. (How did I never comment even as a guest? I really thought I had!)

Ground Zero is very good, what else is there to say?
if you don't expect an EndMaster story to be at least good,
then get help because there's something wrong with you.

A very sprawling work with some really wildly different plot lines, based on your early choices. While it has some minor flaws, it is fun and offers some staggering variety.

I really loved Ground Zero, it' my favorite story. It's really well written and I really liked the main character and his evolution ! :D

Pros:

This is outstanding work. Biases aside for post apocalyptic worlds, the dialogue and story telling is outstanding. World building and images used are brilliant. The amount of paths is ridiculous and will eat up your time. Perfect if you're stuck in an underground bunker.

Cons:

There might be at least one missing quotation mark (probably because the madlad EndMaster who wrote this at the time was in a brief, nanosecond, state of psychosis).
Of course it's also probable I fell into absolute madness when finding the 4 epilogues that I might have hallucinated such an atrocity.

Note:

Reader discretion is advised, it has a 7/8 for maturity for a reason. There are some things that might be....offensive (in all sorts of ways).

This story is amazing! I really felt attached to the characters and got the New Haven ending. It was a wonderful epilogue that showed me that I had started a strong community of people and loved reading about it as it grew. I gave this story an 8/8 score!

I think there definitely has to be a more relatable format for character responses. It is understandable that survival is a priority, but morals and even behaviors from a prior form of life affect ones use of language and problem solving. Not all conversation should be dummed down to "well fuck you!" if you expect people to go about Ground Zero by using communication and survival skills. This dummed down format makes it so that the character really only has one choice or one path to follow, when in reality every new choice you make opens up so many new paths to take.

Great job. Enjoyed thoroughly.

Very sad but it was a great read.

First off HOLY SHIT MAN. This is like reading a real book, props to you honestly you should become a real writer. The story was amazing my first play through was when you buy the bunker and I loved that part but was disappointing by the end and you just walk out of the bunker with a messed up and inaccurate map. I would like to know what happens whether that be another book with that story line or even an extension that was so fun i would do it again. I thought that was the only real ending then we actually get to go into the wasteland and try to rebuild civilization it is amazing! The twists and turns and the loss of your lover the one that saved you in the first place just gave me chills. Then you are deciding whether on not to kill your self and you wined up having sex with the person you saved at the barn with the cult. She tells you that is not what your lover wanted and you should keep fighting for her. Now you own AA and you are the founder and find out the women you had sex with had a child! But sadly she died and now you have to look after your new daughter. Fast forward 10 years and she is helping you through a city of mutants. Eventually you pass and you get to join your lover but you get to see through the eyes of your grand children. My only complaint was like 3 or 4 spelling errors but other than that it was amazing seriously dude great job. :)

I liked it, but it wasn't fantastic... I guess that it just seemed too generic and not imaginative enough. Then agian, there's not much to work with in a post-nuclear holocaust game... Overall, well done.

The story is an enjoyable experience but some endings are disappointingly short or open-ended

I love this game, It brings the tone of the dark humor of dystopian titles and fallout or wasteland games. It can be really long but the pace keeps a very fluid flow that gives dynamism.

My criticism is mostly character personality is pretty grey and common, even if I think it was designed that way to an emphasis on the idea character was an average looser previous the events.

Boring honestly. There were some interesting concepts in the beginning, but it seemed too rush out and felt a bit as if it was written by a 13 year old.

This is the first story I ever read/played on this site when I was younger, I really enjoyed it then and I enjoy it now. Although my ending this time was definitely more disappointing but that was my own fault lol. Last time I remember killing Miranda and leaving the vault to find Rockstargril, which I imagine is the best ending right? This time I ended up slowly starving to death though.

The first time I played this game years ago, I played it safe with the bomb shelter at the start. It was quite a ride and I was able to reach what I think had to be one of the best endings in the game. I figured I probably wouldn't be able to top it with another play-through so I put it down for a while and celebrated the win. I decided to try again, while living fast this time, and probably found the quickest death after the orgy-fest. 10/10 will play again.

This is one of, if not the best science fiction storygames on the site. I love the amount of choices and paths given through the story, and the dark humor just blends so perfectly. I can't really find anything to criticize. Every epilogue ended in a satisfying way, and never left me asking questions or sitting confused. My only possible complaint would be on the Wasteland Bastard path.
**SPOILER ALERT**

I feel like that should be included as an epilogue path, judging by how long and intuitive it was. Even with the hitman killing you at the end, it would feel a lot more like an ending if it was an official epilogue (just my opinion). My favorite path would have to be the mutant path. It was just so cool how the different societies developed and battled, and how everything was described in such insane detail.All in all, I love this story so much, easily in my top 5 favorites. Great work EndMaster on this amazing piece of art.

Mate, bloody brilliant. So many choices, options, stories.... The characters were fleshed out well. The main character was simply badass. Props to EndMaster for creating another gem of a story. Without him, this site would be a poorer place. 10/10.

Interesting game, your choices are the main drive of the story and they impact the direction of a small community you are apart of. It is satisfying to see the affects of your choices in the long term.

Overall short but sweet.

Only complaint is that it was too short, loved the fallout theme. It would’ve been nice if the player could continue the story as jack and so on, but all in all it was great

This stuff is pretty linear with multitude of dead ends, but it's really good story told here (even if MC started as major asshole).

A fun and well-executed story with a lot of replay value. I realize that after 3 or 4 play-throughs I have still only just scratched the surface, but I will speak on what I experienced anyway:

The Good:
Interesting characters, particularly the protagonist. I loved that the main character had a personality (loner, asshole, techie). In some games the player character is left as a blank slate for player's decisions, but I think that is a mistake.
The pacing is excellent and the actions of the plot are interesting and fully-developed.
The decisions are important and you definitely feel that you are impacting the plot.

Needs Improvement:
The dialogue is a little too on-the-nose. Characters should very rarely say precisely what they are thinking
The descriptions are a bit lacking. I see that you were trying to move the plot along without getting bogged down, but it is important to rember to SHOW the readers what is happening, not just TELL them. Although the plot was interesting, I did not quite feel IMMERSED by it. Don't say "He built a cult of personality," show me. Don't say "the shelter fell into disrepair," show me.
I did not think the use of profanity was effective. I understand you were trying to increase the colloquial feel of the dialogue, but it felt hollow. Reducing the amount of profanity will increase the reader's response to it when it IS used.

Overall it was a great read and a fun experience. I look forward to coming back to it numerous times in the future

I've found two of the four endings, and it has taken me a very, very long time. I can't wait for what comes next!

It's quite interesting IF the game was even longer. Dating an AI is such a new idea, but... too bad that AI isn't a walking AI that can accompany the MC up into the world away from shelter. ;)

It is a great story with choices that really do impact how you are seen if you get an epilogue. That is very hard to do which is also why it is such a fun story.

Well-written. I'm glad you put effort in all the endings, instead of just writing "sorry you died the end." Favorite path's probably the mutant one, and the shelter path gave me too much anxiety.

I am very impressed with this game.

Felt like playing through an abridged version of Fallout, some dialogue read a little bit awkward but overall I enjoyed the stories.

The MC is kind of a dick and kind of came across as getting too conveniently lucky with women, but I did like that he was fairly consistent based on his experiences during the various plotlines.

This story has been nothing but grossly homophobic.

In almost every story branch, a gay character is either severally murdered, or is the main villain.

The company in the story is extremely homophobic. I could have excused that, because it made sense to the plot. But killing gay characters, just to kill them. Or making them out to be evil murderers, became too much. I really wouldn't ever read this story again, or anything else from this writer.

I was honestly surprised that I lived in my first try. The epilogue makes me wish I leave such a legacy when I pass away.

This game is really worth playing and reading. I've been looking for a good chose your own story game and this was one of the top 8, So far. Give it a try, I know you'll like it.

I went through the genocide route, and I feel as the amount of time, effort, and choices made on this game was so high, and insane, I was honestly made. While detail was very nice, I wish in the town of Jim's Reapers, there was a choice to stay, or at least a choice to not go roam the streets like a serial killer. The first part really inspired me for a section in my story I am currently working on. I can say one thing though, this story is anything but linear. I just wish you had a bit more control of the person on the genocide route.

Perhaps the greatest game I have played this far here. Multiple story branches taking you down wildly varied paths, excellent writing, solid but not quite perfect dialog, characters who for the most part act true to their nature and not as plot devices, and more. The background characters show distinct lives and developments which can differ greatly based on what they've experienced through your choices, but tend to stay true to their cores. Humor, tension, a sense of the unknown and choices that don't always have obvious or imediate outcomes. I was never asked to "DODGE" which is a nice plus, although there was some obligatory hamfisted sex which given the setting was excusable. The classic female wish fulfillment device was also present but not over done. This was a solid work and I am glad I took the time to (I think) find all the endings.

Interesting and relatively well written. The sex and relationship components seemed to be the standard teenage wish fulfillment common to sci-fi/fantasy, and par for the course a bit awkward and artificial. They weren't nearly as extreme as many works though, and post apocalyptic fiction almost requires a sexual component, so I didn't find those elements too detrimental. Overall an interesting read with good choices that left me wondering and wanting to find out what came next.

I just read the ending with the AI and must say that I am very impressed, not many story would go this way and I must say that I am very happy this one did. I found the ending very nice and will continue to read the story with different choices (even though this will be probably my favorite ending). You have really created something great with this story and I hope this review shows you how gratefull people are for people like you and your work.

EPIC I finaly got an epiluoge. I managed to join the compaound and turn it into the allience. This is my favorite ending by far, I wonder, what else could happen... if I joined a different side.

I folowed my motto, but again, it failed, it failed me. Next time, I will try to help others. Wait I've already tried that. Now it is time for a change, I've gotten like one "good ending, the one where I win the hack-war, and live with Becky. This time, I'm doing something different.

Then I die, alone, but knowing I will come back untill I suceed.

I was a complete sycopath, my life ended with someone shooting me after hiding in a bunker, his answer was "because you could" But, I know the truth, I did it...because I wanted to survive. I did it because the world was savage and chaotic, and killing seemed the only way. I tried to make it right by helping civalasation unfold again, but I had already created a monster, I was a monster. I'm not sure what I could've become, (other than dead) but I tried my best to survive, and in the end, I failed, in the end I realy just commited suicide. I failed in my quest to live, and created a monster of myself, I lived with a motto, "Never trust anyone" I broke it a few times, and that led me on this path, or maybe following it did. I don't know, I'll never know. I did horible things, and the last thought as I leave this world... "I am a monster, nothing I did really mattered in the long run"... but, perhaps, this is a lie, perhapes my life wasn't pointless, maybe along the line, I did something right, maybe...just, maybe. In another life, I'll follow this motto, I'll see what happens, in a paralel universe, I'll remind myself-The monster I have become

I partyed like no tommarow, cause there was none... best ending so far, better then getting shot by an angry women after killing a ton of people, or getting eaten by radioactive wolves, or getting stabed after starting a rebelion, wonder if there is an ending where I'll actualy survive XD.

Dang it, second time playing started a rebelion, I'm not sure how I feel about it... I killed Eliot, I don't know if it was a good choice or a bad one, but I also killed his wife, and left his children orphaned, dove the thing into chaos, but if I learned something from my last playthrough, it's dont trust anyone, I trusted the family, they killed me. And so, I hope I saved everyone By killing Eliot, I'll never know...

*sigh* trying to do the right thing always gets you killed. But it is realistic. Also, I like last-minute discicions, and would like more choices.

Got all four endings and i have got to say that this story is the best one i have read on the site. Inspires me to get back into the fallout world, too bad you can't play as a mutant or start in a vault in Fallout NW. I do feel like there could be more side stories, branches that come back to the main story-line instead of the many 'dead ends.' Thanks for the GREAT read!

This story won me over in a way I never expected. In most CYOA games, I got through by placing myself in the character's shoes and making the choices I would. I found that to be a wholly unfulfilling experience with this game because the character wasn't much like me at all. I stopped thinking "Can't win them all."

Then for some unexplainable reason I decided to give it another try. That's when it hit me. This story isn't amazing because it relates to you. This is a story that you as the reader get to tweak. The author wrote a compelling story with compelling characters and gave you as the reader the option to "what if" at any given number of points. Bravo for making a story truly interactive as a reader.

This is so far the best gamebook I have played. Its vastly superior to all the ones that are on the appstore that I have tried for free or paid for. My favourite storyline is hands down the Dominion one. I encourage the author to introduce more literary (read some classics like Dorian´s Gray Portrait) and RPG complexity (stats, percentage of morality or karma system, perks and items) in this or upcoming creations and start asking for money. I´d pay.

This was the first story I read on the site, and its really cultivated both my interest and curiosity in this type of storytelling.

Endmaster has done an excellent job in character development. Even on the different multitude of arms of this adventure the character is still true to his own nature. I really liked that. By allowing the character to die, he is able to avoid horrible character changing deus ex machina scenarios that drive us all crazy.

I've made an account here after this experience and am excited to do more reading and recreation on this site.

We had our own group, eagerly reading this ...interesting 18+ material. The rape over the photocopier was very dubious consent. I like in the face of imminent apocalyptic disaster, the natural human condition is to become fucking pansexual sexlords who are accepting of all. As you can see, we lost very quickly.

I was expecting to be faced with a decision between life and death but ended up getting out of the shelter without any repercussions? I don't know if I just played my cards correctly, but I didn't get any closure.

A great story game, I loved the range of storylines and the cool images. Great description and I really got immersed within the game's enviornment. The main character was developed beautifully, and really got me into the game

Ground Zero is inventive, exciting, unpredictable, well-characterized, thought-provoking, and entertaining. I would give it 9.5/10 if not for one thing: The GODAWFUL ENGLISH. Incorrect word use, run-on sentences, changing tenses, redundancy, bad punctuation, and clunky wording distract and detract from almost every page. I admit I'm a grammar Nazi, but this story looks like the author did no proofreading whatsoever. (I mean, come on, at least keep the characters' names straight. Is it Jack or Jake?) It's a shame this wasn't edited properly (or possibly at all) because it could be a rough draft of something great.

Sadly I just finished the last epilogue of this story. I loved every minute of this story, and it read very smoothly. I hope there could be an expansion to this story of something like that, because I just cant get enough of Ground Zero!

It's okay

Gosh, Where do I start? The mutant campaign is definitely the best ending. It raises real questions of morality. Are the mutants wrong for conquering the humans? They obviously have a superior society, but that's the same argument that the British used to commit numerous genocides.

The question that is never answered is: are humans biologically more predisposed to violence then their mutant counterparts?

I wish that a peaceful solution could be established, but honestly I don't know how that could happen. Weighing the collapse of your civilization in one hand and the destruction of another sentient species in another is a moralistic choice that I'm not prepared to make.

But I suppose I'm prejudice. If I were facing an army of aggressive, manipulative, and inventive mutants who were hell bent on exterminating me I would probably kill them. I would at least try diplomacy first though.

I just wish that my mutant family wasn't so unstable. With their support I could probably make peace work. What the heck does my wife have against humans anyway?

It's a nice story it just doesn't really make sense how different paths mean different events happening in the world. Like if I take the shelter, the bomb actually didn't go off. If I go to the hospital, the bomb then goes off.

This was my first story on this site and I found it very enjoyable, I love the variety and the writing is brilliant, the scenarios in the community shelter are very believable and it's very fulfilling to live a long happy life. This story covers a range of emotions and I felt for and with and for the characters. 8/8 all around, brilliant start for new 'players'.

I got he best ending on the first playthrough and I felt like all the characters were real! I got to bond with the characters and I almost cried a few times! Amazing work! Keep it up!

*Spoilers* My favourite ending was I my special shelter's AI became a humanoid robot and we fell in love.I died with here and we were never disturbed after our first visit,one hundred years later.

My second favourite is we go outside the shelter and she is killed.But I escape with great supplies and her memory chip. There are also other great endings!

The story was amazing and so intricate. I somehow managed to find my way to one of the good endings the first time through, but loved the story so much I read every possible option to make sure I didn't miss any of this gem.

I've recently started playing a popular and well-known role playing adventure game with a group of friends, and in between campaigns, I find myself fiending for adventure! That's how I've come to where I am now -- stumbling upon this website, and choosing Ground Zero as my first choose-your-own-story sort of dealie. I'm not really sure what to expect from these, so please only take my comments with a grain of salt.

I love cussing. I swear (pun intended), it releases endorphin's when I swear -- it must. Cussing feels great. However, I'm not a huge fan with the over usage of it. Or, at least, swearing that isn't in the right place and time. At times, I felt uncomfortable with how awkward the swearing was at times in Ground Zero. Sometimes, it was totally permissible, but at most points I felt some cringes surfacing up. This is really only my biggest complaint with this adventure.

Suffice it to say, I was thoroughly entertained. I've read through – played through, what have you – twice now and plan to do so again after finishing up these comments. I'm a huge fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, so Ground Zero is fun and thought through well.

Too many built in assumptions of what you do, not enough actual choice. The writing was good, though.

This was by far my favorite choose your story type of story if that even makes sense. I teared up when the main protagonist and Eliza(Shelter) held each other till he passed away. Well done sir or ma'am.

That was fucking good. I started reading it in class because I was bored, and I was surprised it was almost exactly like fallout.

I ended up going through 2 endings (the sex bot one and the new haven one) Bravo to you if theres more.. But wow I enjoyed it. After playing your Bard and Necromancer ones years ago, I was pleased of how dam GOOD this was

I personally felt the protagonist was lacking in choice as in he didn't have many options or actions to choose from and that it was too short (unless I'm just ignorant or something because I only played through it once but I didn't really get an epilogue I was expecting (unless it wasn't an epilogue at all) I kinda just left the shelter and... Boom the end, but then again it has a large amount of potential it just needs some more work/content put into it and interesting topic by the way good choice.)

Oh my god, this story has given me so many feelings. I've made it my goal to get every ending. In my opinion, I felt the happiest when I stayed in the shelter with the lady as a robot. It made me glad to see how this guy was able to live an almost perfect life. I was also very proud after setting up the community shelter community and the compound community. This story is absolutely amazing and I love it!

I played the the game twice and about 3 hours later I reached two epilogues. One was the Eliza Epilogue, and the other was the Empress Hera Epilogue. I absolutely LOVED this game! The possibilities ranged from being brutal dictator of Cinderville, to falling in love with a robot.

INCREDIBLY FUN GAME! However, I think it would appeal to a bigger audience if you cut down the profanities. I played this with my 11 year old brother for Page 1...and then I sent him away :)

Very well put together. It was engaging and immersive. I do think there could've been more options because the story felt quite linear. It was black and white in terms of which choices would kill you and which choices would lead to your survival. However, I am very satisfied with the 75mins that I pumped into this. Although I died, I feel I am doing the story justice by not returning to find a better ending.

However, I tried the other main path, without buying a shelter, and I realised just how more in depth this game was than i originally thought. A true masterpiece.

I especially enjoyed the New Haven path and good ending, I personally think that one was the best, although the one with Eliza and your character is a heartwarming close second. It's amazing what you can find with Google and being bored hahaha. I recall reading choose your story works in the past and I decided to find some. Very enjoyable! Obviously a lot of time and effort was made to produce this story as it is very in depth and has many possible diverse storylines to follow. This is the first 'choose your story' that I've read and am pleasantly surprised by the quality. Apart from the foul language (overused IMHO), and the completely psychopathic path one can follow (which allow for a disturbing, extremely sadistic, violent choices and storyline), this story is very entertaining and well written.

I really loved the games, it made e question my own decision so often I myslef started to get nervous in certain situations.
I loved the idea with the the rpivate shelters but now I want to know what happens if I go into a community shelter.

I love the setting of the story, and will definitely play it some more, it's just that the swearing and the many typos kinda ruin it for me from time to time.. But that's nitpicking. While I'm anything but anti-swearing, it just seems a bit too much here, but maybe that's because I'm European :P

Controlled the combine and got another epoilogue! It took AGES though >.< Longer than the 50 year lurking in my shelter epoilogue!

For starters, this story made me cry. It was a gigantic emotional roller coaster! Every word was placed perfectly, and thought through quite well! When writing, one of the hardest things to do is create dialogue that doesn't ruin the story, and the author managed to do just that.

This was my second time playing this game, and I spent maybe 2 hours on it before I got one of the 4 endings. (Ending #2, I believe) In the beginning, you may feel as if it is a waste of time, but this story is the best I have played in a while. I just LOVE the character development in this game! It definitely added the final touch!

I love the endings and the choices are certainly easy to understand. At points I didn't understand by what choices meant as in "stay put" didn't mean follow orders temporarily, but rather forever.

Second time I've gotten an epilogue, but the first I've been logged in to leave my thoughts on it.

Ground Zero is a good read. Like most of Endmaster's stories it offers several entirely different, but equally enjoyable main paths rooted in the same setting. At the end it just feels as though you've finished a good book. The beauty of CYS is that the first end of a good work is just the beginning of the enjoyment you can get out of it. If you haven't read this, or any of the other great stories on the site I'd recommend you get started.

This is an AMAZING story, I have tried to do every ending (only have done the buying a shelter endings), but this story is way too big, and the level of detail and realism is near perfect.

Wow this story is great! First time I played it I got an epilogue, and man I was proud of that. I loved the story, and I felt like the pros and cons were very well balanced. If something bad happens, you can almost be sure that something good comes with it. I think the best way to play these games is to stick with your decisions no matter how bad it may seem. A couple times I went back because I chose a decision that didn't agree with my gut, but for the most time my instincts proved correct. Just do what you believe to be right and it'll work out ok.

It's good. There are quite a few different story lines you can experience, which make your choices (especially in the beginning) seem really meaningful. It's definitely worthwhile playing through this a couple times to read the other stories.

However, for a game so focused on writing, there are quite a few grammatical errors, even a few spelling ones. The syntax is often rather clunky too, and there are many cases of run-on sentences and improper punctuation. A lot of the dialogue feels a little awkward as well at times, though it's not the worst. Proofreading and fixing these errors would be what changes my rating of this from a 6/8 to an 8/8.

HAD to replay and see all of the different endings. Great storytelling, and decisions mattered. I've spent quite some time playing this and trying for all the endings, and I can confidently say I've enjoyed every second!

First playthrough was quite enjoyable. The choices in Ground Zero are weighted much more than most games, and the copious branching paths have made replaying it irresistible. I love the influences from Fallout and the general plausibility of the story. As for the role we assume at the center of this game, I appreciated the personality itself but longed for more choice in whether to be antisocial or more receptive of others. Overall, Ground Zero is a complete game. It's writing, especially the introduction and various endings, blend a serious tone without sacrificing reader enjoyment. There are just the right amount of questions left unanswered, and this provokes the imagination to complete the tale. More than worthy of everyone's time and appreciation, this is a story game of rare, high quality.

The amount of endings you can achieve in this interactive story is awesome. Took me a while to get the ending good enough to satisfy, but it was damn worth it.

Brought tears to my eyes at times. A wonderful, compelling story where your choices make a huge difference in the ending. Loved it, loved the characters, but had to admit I was extremely sad as my protagonist grew alone once more as his wife and the people he grew old with died off.

A wonderful piece of art. If anything, I think it could even be expanded upon to include more story and more decision making to effect the potential outcomes.

I've only taken one route so far, the Experimental Shelter route, and I'm just a little surprised at where it ended. It seemed prime for another "arc" so to speak where you journey to the other shelter, and I was just a little let down that it didn't continue. However, I know there is MUCH more to experience, and will surly check back later to see what else this story has to offer.

I've never wanted to replay a storygame as many times as I have this one. Usually I'm content finding one 'good' ending, but this one changes so dramatically based on what you do at certain points (mostly the beginning) and yet easter eggs the paths that could have been taken so well that it's hard to just stop playing it through to the various Epilogue Endings.

For some reason, I always get what I imagine to be the worst/most gruesome ending whenever I play one of your games. For example, on this one, I ended up dying in a bunker, which I was trapped in, after living a life of putting skulls on stakes, raping women, killing children, joining gangs, and then killing leader of said gang. At least, I think that's how it went. I spent hours getting other endings. Can't remember which game it was I ended up shooting up the school in. Anyway, great game. I played it for hours, because I wanted to see how many endings I could find.

It seems a little unfair that you get punished for wanting to have a good time, but I guess it makes sense, survival of the fittest and all.

I've played Ground Zero many times since I first discovered it last year. I had never realized this whole other story was here; so far i've played both Shelter stories (Community and private)and once on the surface as the crazed maniac. While the Eliza storyline in the shelter was my favorite, this one is amazing. It's lengthy, entertaining, and just-- I'm not entirely sure how to describe it, but i absolutely loved it.

This might actually be the best story I've ever read.

What a fantastic story. I didn't get a full appreciation until the third time through, when I discovered that some of the paths go down entirely different story arcs and don't actually seem to cross - unless I've been dying too early to find those parts?!
I'll now be trying more paths, really enjoyed it. Great Fallout-esque humour.

I am somewhat new to choose your own story books, but this is one of the most amazing experiences in reading I have ever had, I loved the book so much I took up the task of trying out every single ending (which is insanely worth it). This story made me think "what a stupid death" at sometimes, yet many ones made me want to cry out of either joy or sadness (all in a good way). To put it simply this story has amazed me and would recommend it to anyone who can read (except for maybe younger kids due to heavier topics). :'):'):'):'):')

It's a very interesting concept and I definitely felt sympathy for the characters and wanted to make the right decision. The one problem was the text felt a little dense.

This is a really great story and I have only done two of the endings. Unlike most stories which have long text that you can skim. This one it is well written to the point that if you skim you can barely scratch the surface of the phenomenal story.

Great game, it really shows how every little decision can have a huge effect on the outcome. It was well put together. I reached a ton of endings, some I couldn't classify as good or bad. A nice way to open up your mind on a rainy day.

I loved it, and have played it twice (I intend to play it a few more times) but I really wish you could continue after escaping the shelters

First Endmaster read I'd made, and I must say I loved it! Ground Zero was just so surreal and visual for me that I couldn't help but go back and read it again! I should probably go read some more stories now...

Seriously though, Ground Zero is NOT to be overlooked. I would consider a CYS classic, even! Not that we have those but that doesn't matter. :P

I got out of the shelter.

The first time through, I got one of the short endings. Then I figured I'd go back and try again.

I've been reading this over and over all morning, trying to find the different endings and loving every second. This has been a truly unique experience, very well-written and engrossing, but realistic in many minor ways.

This was a fantastically made story, and I can't wait to try things another way. Definitely very intense, at least as far as the two paths I've tried so far.
Helps capture the frightening feeling of a world on the brink of collapse, which is very impressive

Pretty stellar CYOA; well-fleshed story archs and a dark personality to boot, definitely made with a lot of care.

The writing and grammar won't make you shed tears, but it's still good enough to the point where it'll get genuine emotional responses from you - and it does a great job of setting the stage for whatever mood it wants to get across.

My one complaint is that the protagonist is an absolute ass in almost every rendition, and a totally anti-social one at that: definitely felt a bit distanced, as a gay male, over the lack of choice as far as some of the story archs took towards the protagonist making relationships with female characters or treating gay characters in the story. I would've appreciated some choice on not being a passive-aggressive, condescending dick to people in general conversation too: you can't really get around it.

Aside from that, a fairly-stellar experience that had me going back to see all the different endings. Great work!

All these storylines are so different from each other and i love it. I've found 3 epilogues this far and all three were totally different. This is probably the best game i've ever played.

My first round was short lived, but fun. Maybe I should have gotten a bomb shelter instead of partying like it was 1999....

I liked it but the ending i got to seemed to come a bit too early. There was clearly alot more room to keep on going but I guess it only was a small sidepath after all.

I feel like the narrative could've been broken into more individual pieces so that there's more room for choice and to avoid overloading the reader with text. Otherwise, a reasonable game with some interesting characters in a familiar premise.

This story was a work of art, it was nail biting for the vast majority and the presidential ending was a great wrap up. Played this game over and over again, I'm still doing so. I wish I could've continued my quest to bring back Eliza. This story had me attached to a damn robot. It's brutal, touching, sad and can even be heartwarming or outright insane. LOVED IT. Great work!

Awesome! 150 years that time. Even more detailed characters and plot points. It's like 20 stories in one. Fantastic.

Brilliant. Detailed. Really plays on some common fears of the end of the world. Reminiscent of Fallout and other apocalyptic games/films/books.

The plot moves at a great speed, and i had trouble putting it down. So far I've gotten epilogue 1 and 2, and I'm not stopping until I get the other two.

This was an awesome game! I spent several hours exploring the different paths, and eventually reaching the epilogue was exciting. All in all, the story was well written no matter what decisions you made, and wasn't one of those games that only felt complete if you followed the intended path. One note: I don't believe the game warranted an 8/8 rating for length; Maybe more like a 6.

It can start as a choose your own path book, but then it becomes deeper, a whole lot deeper. It throws you into a moral pit and expects you to come back up, you'll find yourself living in vaults, engaging in diplomacy, establishing cities, fighting for your life and barely struggling to survive, or becoming a tyrant....the possibilities are endless

But then, you could suddenly die due to your stupidity, your choices also affect the personality of your character.

EndMaster, you are honestly one of the greatest story-tellers on the planet. On par with Stephen King and Harper Lee. Although Ground Zero could use a little proof-reading (typos could sometimes interfere with the atmosphere of the tale), the main idea and story-line is one of the best ones I've read in a long time. Thank you, kind sir, for bestowing upon us this gift.

I find the story kind of depressing. I mean, when you have to make important decisions (ex: Picking Elliot or Ron) you can't pick, just able to pick if you vote or not. What the hell? Many storylines lead to death of you, and thats kinda sad. Good game, though, either way.

This is an excellent game. I got what I think is the best ending, where I re-made civilisation, and I was remembered a century after I died. It made me very happy, seeing that my choices affected the world so much (in the game) and I highly recommend this story game to anyone else.

That feeling when i finally reached the epilogue. there are so many ways to play this game, it's almost unbelievable. I really enjoyed the many choices i could make and all the so different endings. this is a definitive 8/8.

This was meaningful, massive, deep, how much can you say about a Fallout-like story. It's a story that actually makes me feel complete but also sad when the character finishes the Community Vault in the good ending after many years, it made me want to salute the frikkin'character even if Nina died and he had to...you might say that the story had so much choices and meanings that it made me feel deep and reflective... GREAT JOB!!!

I got so into this story. But the cliff hanger with your character not knowing what awaits him on his trip to find becky just made me want more. please make a part 2

The story definitely seems to be interesting but as is a problem with characters in many books (or it may just be because of events during time skips) they do seem to act very slightly cheesy sometimes, but other wise the story is quite good. (The rating is because the story progresses a tad to fast and I sometimes find my eyes skipping over a few lines, and having zero clue whats going on, not really the authors fault, but something that could be improved.)

This was amazing it was really cool the end i got when New Haven was built and was still being built when it ended with zachary. It took me a few tries for example i died and so did everyone but in the last 1 i lived a full life and New Haven lived on

This was really good! I would of liked to have seen a longer ending in which you travel to Becky's place (but then again the whole romance thing was kinda' creepy) and I would of also liked to have more control during the battle with the cat lady. Overall I really enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed both the purchasing of the shelter and the "going it on your own" I loved the AI involvement and the twist of Miranda hacking the systems instead of Shadow.

The last time I left a comment on Ground Zero was a very long time ago. At that time I had only played through this storygame once, and whilst I hadn't died immediately, I wasn't exactly close to getting an epilogue. To paraphrase myself in this comment, I said that I would have liked more choice in the protagonist's actions. Looking back, I see that not only was I being unfair, but I didn't understand at all what makes this game great.

Since then, I have played through every page and discovered all the wonder and intrigue this deep, rich world has to offer. As is often the case with EndMaster's stories, it is the characters and plot which are most memorable. It is amazingly satisfying to see how your choices affect not only your own character, but other characters and even the world around you, in believable, really interesting ways. Not only that, but I was treated to a whole giant spider-web of such delicious stories, branching off in many directions, even when you think you've finished it all. Not one of these tales, on any page, did I find boring or dull. All the endings were a fun read and the epilogues provided good closure, with (most of them) giving us a glimpse into the life of your descendants. In this aspect - this incredible use of interactive fiction in its most basic form - Ground Zero is second only to Eternal.

I always find it strange when people complain about the linearity or lack of choices in an EndMaster game. Do they even know what linearity means? This thing branches like a motherfucker; it's anything but linear. I concede that there are less choices insomuch as there are probably less combinations due to lack of variables and scripting, but when you have such story-driven and meaningful choices that completely change the direction of the plot, the choices in Ground Zero are better, I would say. Yes, it means you don't control your character as much, but the protagonist is a (metaphorically) real person with his own opinions, feelings and motives. It allows for a much more complex and fascinating main character than if the player could decide every single little action.

Thank you, EndMaster, for writing such an epic tale that kept me entertained for hours on end. It was one of the first storygames I played on this website and it certainly left a fantastic impression. If it wasn't for Ground Zero, I might not have stuck around on CYS. Thank Dendrin I din't stumble upon Warrior Cats fanfic before reading this beauty.

Very nicely written and atmospheric. Great development in character through interactions with other well-created characters as well. The paths are very different so it's got a great replay value and the endings are fleshed out so they're not sudden, but rather satisfying. A definite must-play which left me wondering about what I'd do in the case of a nuclear war or apocalypse.

Very well done with a lot of different story arcs depending on your choices. Dialogue is a little stilted at times and the F bomb is overused but these are very minor complaints.

Unless you're talking about listing hints, which doesn't mean anything to me since it isn't the first time somebody has done it in the comments section, in fact I've done it myself a few times for this very story.

I just got the other 3 epilogues. 'Epilogue 1' really surprised me. Completely based off of romance. Nice.

'Epilogue 4' is attained by going to the city.

'Epilogue 3' is attained by going to work.

'Epilogue 2' is attained by going to the community shelter.

And 'Epilogue 1' is attained by going to the special shelter.

I'm sorry, Endmaster, if I pissed you off, but I had a pretty damn hard time getting 'Epilogue 1', so I just wanted to throw some hints out there.

Myyy god.

After I read Necromancer (Which, in my opinion, is the best story-game here), I was rather... Skeptical about this story, seeing as how Necromancer had you delve in-to the realistic characters and feel proud when you successfully changed the surroundings around you... Save, this was like in opposite order. The epic scale was also there, and it had me waste 4 hours just to get to the 'Epilogue 3'. I still haven't played the others epilogues, but my god.

As far as I could see, there were hardly ANY grammatical, or spelling errors. There was only, on average, one error per 2 pages, which I'd say is about 1 in every thousand words. Pretty damn impressive.

You also have things that simply pop out, and surprise you in various ways. Such as... Nah, I'm not gonna spoil it, but there were a couple things in there that got me, in the 'Epilogue 3' path alone.

Over-all, 8/8, would buy this on the iTunes store. You should try it, bro. And, now that I've tasted the great flavor this story had to offer, I'm gonna check some others... Hope they're just as epic.

I think the writing was fantastic, and the variety of choices and the extremely varying paths the story can take took a lot of work, I can tell. My only gripe is the main character. It seems like (at least in the routes I played through) he's a massive asshole, even where he has no cause to be. And I have no problem with swearing in stories; I've used it in plenty of my own, but I feel like there was a swear every other sentence in this story, which for me, is pushing it a bit, almost to the point of disturbance. But that's my only gripe. The positives far outweigh the negatives in this story, so fantastic job.

This is great. Very reminiscent of Fallout. I don't think it needs to be 7/8, however. I didn't see any explicit sex, or overly gory violence.

My first game on here and it was amazing! I felt as though I was in some sort of weird Fallout text based universe. I really recommend it!

but that might just be me since i grew up in a small town.

Tried to pull off an Eddard Stark, got my girlfriend and me killed. Died Laughing 10/10 would rebel again.

Incredible game and wonderfully told narrative that keeps you going up until the very end, very sweet in parts and very sentimental in others I thoroughly enjoyed my experience playing this game I would love to see more games like this.

I liked the multiple endings for the choices you made at the beginning. It could have used a lot more choices though-there was a lot of text and not as much actions you could do (being in the shelter opened slightly more choices.)

This story's pretty amazing and i loved all the different ways it could go. I went through it a few different times and it absolutely amazed me how each decision braanched off into a whole unique and well-written new story. I haven't tried every desicion yet but I plan too soon :)

This was amazing I loved how deep the story went and how it managed to reference other branches of choices. Like the Elliot thing and how it's referenced while you are atomic alliance officer.

If at all possible, could you continue the Becky plot after the reader makes it out of the shelter. A journey to find her would be neat. :)

After an hour and 24 minutes, many restarts and "damn, wrong choice!" moments. I finally reached the best ending. (I think)

Great game! Most of it was very very gripping and kept me interested in the story. I did notice some miss spells but not too much. Harry may have personally annoyed me but that may have been what you were going for with his character. By the way, I really enjoyed the special shelter story line. It was simply fantastic. I loved how the characters were living in seperate areas and talked through some sort of chat room. It was very interesting and cool! Just like this game.

The environment and atmosphere described through some of the many choices (a lot which don't lead to a dead end, which I in general hate) really gives off the whole apocalyptic/new world theme. ye have an amazing game here! the "chat room" speech should've been spaced out between each person's individual comments to make it easier to read & easier on the person's eyes, & it would certainly help to get the choice of which options to take into the special shelter & to have an armory in it with the choice of what to take from it if going outside (& this can also lead to advancing the storyline beyond the shelter), & it would've been better to have more in depth interactions (& quantity of them) between the other "chat room" people. other than this, AMAZING storyline & after I finished it felt like a great accomplishment & having the feeling of just finishing a long epic story that spans lifetimes in a small story (very few can make a story that becomes epic & this certainly has become such).

ChooseYourStory/Ground Zero was an amazing interactive story/game. I thought it it was a pretty creative way to get the player to feel empathy towards their character and immersed in the story.

Just awesome. Im new to this genre and this was prwtty intense.

This story is VERY well written, has a nice plot and interesting outcomes to various choices. Although i died many times (about 6) i really loved my epilogue (2). The story ends very nicely and even when you die without an epilogue it's still cool. I would recommend Ground Zero to anyone!

Really loved it, played it multiple times to get different endings and they were all really interesting and intricate. I always enjoy a good post apocalyptic story. A plus was that there were some similarities to fallout, love that game. Make more stories!

The ending where you get eaten by dogs needs to be taken out and you need to make it to the city, and other stuff, die in a shoutout when you found a gun and you kill 10+ people before tyou die, the rest of the details is up to you

Wow!!!! This game is brilliant!! I don't understand how the author was able to create so many differnt storylines and twists, but every choice has a consequence and each time the story plays out differently. I've Been playing for about an hour now, restarting the game each time I reach the end, and each time I make a different decision, the events that follow continue to surprise me and keep me interested. It has happy, sad, scary and sweet/feel-good endings and twists, and I am in awe of this game and the author who has such a creative and vivid imagination. I thought that "The Walking Dead" game was amazing, but it has nothing on this game. I've only played out about 20 scenarios and there are still a couple more that I haven't tried. Will be doing that for the rest of the night :) Thank you for this game!!!!

Over all, after playing the game several times over time, I'd have to give this a 6. It's a lot of fun, and well worth the time spent on it, but there are too many endings that could have been better. So many things are left undone, and in the end, you really only have a few choices to make during each scene. Sure, it branches out a lot over-all, but when you only have so many options. It could have been much, much bigger than it was.

Though some of the deaths seemed to occur through random "accidents" or coincidences, it really only needed to follow the simple logic; pussy out now, you're going to pay for it in the future. Man im a jerk in this story

It was a very good game with choices that felt meaningful. It was very interesting to see how the situation changed and developed over the course of years.
However, I did sometimes feel that the actions of the main character were forced, such as when he votes for Ron or when he shoots himself in one ending. It would have been nice to have some sort of choice in these situations.

I mean i can only imagine how long it takes yo make these but it wasnt as long as i hoped for it to be.

One is in the Community Shelter (Develop more of a community spirit)
One is in the Compound (Stick with Marina and eventually become more of a leader)
One is in the City (Head to the city and embrace mutant destiny)

Great game overall. But some of the choices end up leading you to die without any warning whatsoever. It's feels like you just need to be lucky to end up picking the right one.
Also sometime the cusing seems a bit too much.
Anyway so far I've finished 3 of the 4 endings but I can't seem to find the last one. Could someone give me some sort of hint or clue to get all the epilogues pls Ty. :D

Great story, as soon as I saw they named the town "New Haven" I went "really? wow" I love how it had a combination of Fallout and Borderlands. I wish in the experimental shelter you would go to the surface and find a pet or something.

Really well thought out storyline. I've gone through every possible path. I really like how the stories fit into each other. The reuse of characters, like Damon the thug. All the epilogues really give you a sense of closure on that particular story arc. By far the best story I've read so far.

Noticeably not as many options with this one compared to Eternal...
(although he could have made this one first, not sure) I managed to find 3 of the four endings, and have to say I am slightly sad that I wasnt able to get an ending for both the Special Bunker or for the Insane murderer/GangLeader... Which is a shame, but I guess the endings main theme is to see what impact you left on the world through your offspring... *sigh*
My first play through ended up with me heading out to meet my fellow survivor in a specialized bunker.... Like how open ended everything was, although when playing I felt that it was more than just a little inspired by the Fallout series... not that that's bad or anything, just an observation. (although the pictures were nice!)
Had to rate it slightly lower than Eternal for the Endings...

Very good story. It takes a couple questionable turns, but all-in-all it was a fun ride! The character dialogue, especially in the beginning, is very real. It made me feel as if I was actually reading a conversation between two very real people. Without spoiling anything, after the exposition, the characters become pretty confined. And I mean that literally. I found myself wishing for more of an adventure, but I highly recommend this story.

Beautiful story with a few Fallout and Borderlands references here and there. I sure hope there's a sequel in the near future.

I like the way you incorporate a legacy into the story and a sense that the story continues even when you have finished.

The writing was interesting, and the story overall was good; the problem is that too much of the story wasn't my choice. Too much of the story just 'happened' without my having a say-so in how or why I would do something. An example: I ended up helping the family with the broken leg and left when threatened. I, personally, would have lied and come back to kill them or even would have liked to head to the city or something other than "Leave" or "Stay".

If only my shelter would have had all the porn.. *sigh* well some people have all the luck. I've read a lot of stories on this site and this one is without a doubt the best one.

I can't tell you how many times I've replayed it and I find something new each time.

Lots of choices and a fun read. If this could be built up with stuff like inventory, stats, etc it's a great concept!

This was very interesting. I like my crude attitude and frequent grogginess. But partying like it was 1999 was worth it. I recommend this!

It's absolutely astonishing how this story sheds light on human emotions and never ending resiliency. I'm not usually one to connect with a work of fiction but I really felt as though I just lived my entire life in these mere moments it took for me to read this.

Got epilogue 3. First time I played, I wasn't that impressed but after being able to actually get somewhere (damn my humanity and conscience) it is really enjoyable and lengthy. Actually what I liked most was that gradually the focus shifted from survival if you so choose, to what you so choose. Definitely love the dynamic feel to the story since a lot are "railroaded"

Great Story! I gave it a 8 and it was very fun and has a deep storyline:D. I actually found three of the four epilogues! staying in the private shelter does have an epilogue btw, But its hard to find ;)

I can sum this story in four words... This. Story. Is. Perfect. It has the right balance of story play and game time, and no choice left me bored, like some others. Also has a great ending!

this was great! i was surfing the internet for no reason and came across this. Then as I kept reading I was getting attached. It was good ride. I loved it! Also got the best ending on the first try. But yeah, this was good.

Originally I gave this a six. Post-apocalyptic stories aren't really my thing, so to speak, and the paths I originally took didn't really do much for me. As some people pointed out, your character can be quite the jerk. However, I don't see that as a flaw in the writing so much as it just isn't my personal tastes. The writing, as for all your games, is exemplary (barring the few technical mistakes here and there). While I don't LIKE a lot of swearing, it really does make sense for the time and situation, and I really get the impression you're not walking on eggshells for anyone. I can respect that, even if I personally don't swear and hate being sword at in reality.

Anyhow, I finally got the 'Eliza' ending, and it was beautiful. And I think that's what I love about your works. You present these gritty worlds with horrible people and events in them, and hard choices, but through it all, you still have this magnificent portrayal of beauty and an odd sense of justice also. So, Bravo, Bravo!

i love the way endmaster tells stories it's like the options he gives are some that i'd actually choose it doesn't feel like i'm playing a game i can physically see it like it's actually happening right in front of me its descriptive and realistic and idk i just love it

I got through both epilogues and I liked bother but I like the vault ending more cause it was deeper. Great story in all wish there was a sequel like from a different point of view.

It was really good just wish u had more choice but it was a very good story to introduce one to the choose your own adventure world. Such as my self.

Honestly, I'm not as keen on this one as I have been on other stories by the same author. Still, I was intrigued enough to keep going until I found an epilogue. Wish there was less swearing though.

Very good! I think this is a GREAT game and maybe you could make a 2nd game? It would be nice to see what happens later in the game. I only got one ending, but it is excellent. I like the pictures too. They relate well to the current scene. This game will bring you enlightenment!

I think it's a great game, and I played through several different endings, and I have to say, it's very well done. But in the beginning, I had issues connecting with a character who was such a jerk. Aside from that, I think this is a beautiful game. P.S. Love the Fallout pics.

Quite good, this. I wouldv've liked a bit more choice than what was offered, but I get that it was a story-centric game. Still, the variety was certainly there so it remained interesting and entertaining, though I didn't really understand the characters motivation for being such an asshole at the beginning. Perhaps with a little back story, but I didn't and couldn't have written something with this much charm and variety. Congrats to the writer.

I thought i'll never see this game again, I've played this game year ago, and i was in love with it. but i forgot the name of the sit, but now I've found it again. So i'm gonna get each and every ending now.

This was a good read, and an interesting way to spend some time. I found a few typos, but nothing is perfect. I rated it an eight. Good stuff, but I kind of wish the story continued after the dude left the shelter.

This is my fourth game on this website and omg is it good. I went through all of the endings... And I do mean all. I started this on Friday and it is now 3:30 am on Tuesday. Now granted I didn't do this straight through but still. This series is very well written and strangely enough does have many true different paths for the different people. My first true ending after about three deaths was amazing. This is a novel within novels and takes a great deal of time to enjoy all of its points, but is definitely worth it.

Needs more variety and options, it would be more stimulating to be more active in the decision making process.

I loved everything about this story I choose it expecting a few seconds of something to consume my time but little did I know that I just unlocked the best freaking choose your story ever I really hope others get this same satisfaction from this story as I did and I hope the author will make more stories like this.

Great read! Very in depth game. I really liked how well all of the other factions continued to cross over each path, no matter which path you choose. The endings were pretty varied and creative too. Very well written.

At most there were two choices to pick from, which is, quite lacking for a Choose-your-own-adventure game.

I played this game about a billion times before I got an ending that I finally felt good with. All of the endings were good ones, but the one where I was killed by the "mutant bounty hunter" gave me a strange sense of peace.

It is a good story. I have read some of EndMaster's stories before, it is as good as I expected it to be.

I didn't like it.

As I found the Special Shelter Ending I finally realized the true intelligence of Endmaster and every story he wrote. A 9.9 out of 10 and no matter what ending one takes the characters develop nicely and even Shelter/Eliza is an amazing character too.
I highly recommend this to anyone with the time.

This is another great story by Endmaster (even though he dabbles in fantasy adventure most of the time) the characters develop and every situation has depth
to it as well as almost NO errors or bugs. A 9.9 out of 10 and I recommend this for anyone who wants to be entertained I know I was.

one of the branches from this story brings me back to "The Book of Lost Things."

This is one of the first games I've played on this site, but definitely the best so far. I like the fact your choices require sensible, logical decision making. It is important that even poor decisions often lead to further choice rather than instant death.
It also makes a change to be able to have your own place and ride out a lot of the trouble, rather than forcing you to constantly wander aimlessly. Nice story game! 8/8

Amazing. I cannot imagine what else I would have done with these three hours. I applaud your innate grasp of complex decisions and their repercussions. All in all a one of a kind, well planned, classic create-your-own-adventure tale!

I enjoyed it a lot, but I kinda wished there was more action than just sitting in a bomb shelter reading about how your character gets his freak on before some random lesbian hacks your system and you have to leave.

Other than that 6/10

this was brilliant, couldn't put it down. So many different twists. I played until i read all four epilogues. I loved the inter connectivity of the story. If you went with the, it told you about what happened in the second. Then if you went with the second, it told you about what happened in the first. Each one had the human element present. I fell in love, i was betrayed, i knew humanity. The best story on here and i don't want to see one top it.

Best so far, it's peppered with swear words, but no more than regular conversation. This story has everything. You go from being attacked to being seduced. I have gone through twice, and am about to go a third time.

Beautiful, raw, believable. This story made me want to survive, not as a means of beating the game, but because I felt it was real. It gives a sense of immersion the degree of which I had yet to encounter on this website. I was able to get Epilogue 2 on my first run, and you can bet that I'll be back to find a few others. Your focus on storytelling is something I very much admire, you don't let gadgets and goofy systems distract from the sheer magnitude and cohesiveness of the story you've crafted. My only complaint was the frequent Jack/Jake switching which I assume is an oversight. I'll assert this again and again: astounding from the very first page.

I like this. The detail is just right, not overly done but paired with the simple choices it gives you satisfaction. Like i said, the choices are simple, but that doesn't make it boring, you just have found an extremely efficient storytelling manner. You have given me some ideas about my format. good job!

I picked this up thinking it would be a simple post-apocalyptic survival story. After checking almost every single page could find, I can now compare my previous idea to saying that the world is about four feet in diameter. This story is infinitely expanding and every option is brimming with excitement that defines the human psyche as in-depth as you can get. The beginning is light and humorous, the middle provides tension and edge-of-your-seat thrilling suspense, and the ending (or at least the only epilogue I managed to find) actually made me cry. This story is so flawlessly written that it has made me question almost everything I have come to know about the literary world. My only major complaint is that the community shelter's story was fairly weak in my opinion; the special shelter storyline provided everything that makes me rate this a flawless 8 out of 8. I would rate this higher if I could. The unforgettable characters and their exploits will stay with me forever, and I cannot thank EndMaster enough for introducing me to them. Bravo.
